I brought my cat in to be euthanized over a month ago now, and I've yet to hear anything of my cats ashes. Dr Cooke is amazing! My dog Gidget has been licking and biting her paws(all 4) for months. Hours on end. We tried shots, pills, probiotics, specialty foods, paw balm, socks and epson salt foot baths. ALL to no avail! Frankly, I don't know how she or I have lived through this. Dr Cooke put her on a new medication and presto, no more biting or licking within two days! It's a miracle! When we moved to Bakersfield, we started at a vet recommended to us. But we were frustrated by the rules, like paying a hold fee new patients. We tried it, but then we found Dr. Cooke. He's great in every way that's important. We moved here with our two rescues, and they are family and comfort for us. There's a shortage of veterinarians in Bakersfield. I'm glad we found Dr. Cooke. After a few months here, it was, unfortunately, time to let our Golden Retriever mix go over the Rainbow Bridge. It was tough, but the staff were so understanding. A few months later, we adopted a stray, and again, we got great treatment, having her fixed and shots. Our other rescue needed a minor surgery, too. They were very well cared for. read more

We have been taking our dog's to Cooke's for years but as of late since the beginning of the year service is horrible!! They DO NOT answer the phone or return texts. You now take a chance by just showing up after 3 p.m. for care. They have a new young girl at the counter who HAS to be a relative for she is clueless and dumb as a rock. Stated one time we didn't pay for the last visit when it was her that credited my payment to someone else's account. Dr. Cooke is MIA and only now see pets from 8am to 8:30am and the staff seems to the ones who diagnose your pet's needs. What a joke!! He must be on his way out. This facility has raised their fees by grand margins while their care has plummeted. It is NOW all about money and not compassionate care for your beloved fur babies. The place smell like a litter box and not everyone can be exposed to the myriad of the cats roaming about. It is a shame about their demise!! read more

BEWARE................. DON'T take your animal here. They had my sons cat brain damage. For over dosing her when the cat came to be fixed and to top it off they wanted the cat back and then Keep it over the 3 day weekend and still charged us for there SCREW Up. Horrible horrible. It is unfortunately very difficult to get your dog/cat seen at a vet in Bakersfield. Cookes was the only one that had availability and I had no other choice. The vet and staff are very nice and I feel so sorry for them. How can they work at a place that reeks of cat pee??? It is nauseatingly disgusting. The smell can be noticed from outside the clinic. Not to mention the mountain of cigarette butts around the clinic. So gross. Worse still is that they NEVER answer the phone. I called 7 times to get blood work results and had to go in person 3 times to get them. I feel awful taking my pets here and I am so glad to be moving soon so I can take them to a different doctor. I heard good things about this place through a really good friend of mine so I decided to call them for assistance in getting a pill form of medicine to my old grumpy cat who scratched and bit me when trying to do it. Of course they got it down her in seconds. Thanks so much everyone at Cooke's for being awesome. Also I had seen some of the reviews about them having cats all over, smells of urine etc. When I walked in it did not smell real bad of urine and to be honest it is a vet for cats and peoples pets who are scared have accidents but even for the short time I was there one of the girls started mopping the whole place. After 12 years of being a loyal customer, I cannot recommend Dr. Cooke anymore. After waiting a week for an appt for our senior dog that has a cough, I took the last appt for the day, rushing to the vet after school pickup. Between on ramps being closed and traffic, I arrived 3 minutes after my appt time, but was never told he wouldn't see me so I signed in. I waited 20 minutes while people were checking out and one had a whole visit done, to be told he left because I was late. I've waited patiently in that waiting room for every appt the last 12 years, never complaining about waiting after my appt time. read more

I've taken my doggie boys to a few diff vets in Bakersfield over the years... there was always the feeling that the assistants were cold as were the doctors. This place is such a breath of fresh air. The staff is amazing and the doctor is as good as they get. We just went through a serious scare with one of our boys, and we aren't out of the woods yet, but they are handling him so amazing. My buddy is in love The pretty nurse with the tattoos because she gets down on his level and hugs him and lets him love on her. He looks forward to seeing her every time. Having been with Cooke,s vet office for over 16 years and was a loyal client with two dogs, this office can't seem to help me with an urgent need. My oldest boy was in bad shape and needed urgent care. Cooke's didn't have the same loyalty for their client who was coming to this office for over 16 years. I guess if a loved one needs to be put down, there is no need for loyalty Or urgency. I will not be able to recommend this office for lack of loyalty and not sensing the urgency when I ask for help. My family and I have taken our animals to cook for as long as I can remember. He has always taken amazing care of all my animals and my family! I seen a lot of comments about all the cats but nobody really knows why there are so many cats in the office. Dr.Cook LOVES all animals and some people take that for granted, people leave cats and kittens at his office door and some don't get homes. Dr.Cook has taken in these cats and gave them a home. My 15 year old cat started having unusual symptoms so I took him to Dr Cooke . And he runs tests and tells me my cat has diabetes. So now Im giving insulin shots twice a day and weekly visits for blood glucose tests. I really like that he's such a kind and gentle Dr and hope he doesn't retire anytime soon. When trying to find a vet for my new puppy everyone kept telling me to go to Cooks. So I followed the advice and I took my puppy in for the first time examination & to be dewormed. I walk into the building and it's standing room only its packed! It's a small office to begin with. I check in and notice cats roaming around everywhere. I am allergic to cats there were cats everywhere I cannot even explain how many cats I saw there was so many it was ridiculous. Do they not take into consideration that some of their customers may be allergic to cats? By the time I left the office after my puppy was first seen, my eyes were swollen I was sneezing it was miserable. After my puppy was seen they asked me to bring in a stool sample to test for further worms. I turned the stool sample never heard from the doctor never heard from the office but I did receive a bill. Really no results no courtesy call nobody contacts me nobody sends me anything in the mail telling me what they found in my puppy's stool? I will not be back at this place I now have a new vet. read more

my cat started peeing blood last night around 10pm and by today at 1pm cookes had me in the office despite never having been there before. i don't get paid until tomorrow and they told me they'd rather treat him and wait for payment than postpone his visit and cause him harm. they gave me amazing service and prescribed him pain killers, antibiotics, and prescription cat food and i was out by 1:30. my cat is always scared at the vet but felt right at home there. they didn't charge me for an emergency visit and completely covered the pain medication without pet insurance. the head veterinarian and his assistants did an amazing job and this will be the only vet i ever take my son chunk to read more

My wife and I have been using Dr. Cooke for over 20 years. There are other Vets in town and being I use to drive around to many of them collecting the lab work and delivering them to a lab up north. Dr. Cooke's is by far one of the very best in town. I know his prices have gone up a little more than I would like, I will still come back. For some reason all the Vet's in town are extremely busy. Took my dog in to have her ears cleaned and have a foxtail removed. She is very protective of her ears because of a bad experience with a different vet . she was shaking like a leaf when i dropped her off but was happier than ive ever seen her before when i picked her up. She got relief from that foxtail with no bad experience to go with it. Got my old annie back and couldnt be happier read more
