Mom wanted Christmas gifts from this black family owned popcorn company. We met the wife coowner--she was so kind to us. I loved that the family's fun photos were on the wall. Representation storytelling is warming when in a family photo board. As a first time visitor I taste-tested a few flavors which were unique. I will say I'm not their target customer not into diff flavors on popcorn. I'm a foodie though so I'm keen on flavor profiles. Of the four I tried, the vanilla cinnamon and white cheddar was nice. Vanilla cinnamon could've passed for Apple pie as it kinda tasted like that. I think I wanted more marshmallow/graham taste on the s'mores vs chocolate. I wish the business long term success! First, park in the parking lot on the left side of the plaza, across the street. I promise you will thank me after when you're watching other customers who parked in front try to back out on the street. Second, TRY EVERYTHING. There's going to be flavors and combos that you didn't think you'd enjoy together but watch out - you're going to end up leaving with four different flavors of popcorn like I did. I found out about Kernels yesterday. I went today. I got home with the popcorn about an hour ago. I've eaten almost an entire bag already. This popcorn is SO amazing, y'all. I got the frosty, the caramel, and the white cheddar. I knew I'd like them all but was surprised at how I couldn't stop eating the frosty. It's, well, frosted. In a white icing. So good. I'm sure there are other good places to get popcorn in Nashville but I can't really think of any. BUT if you are going to buy good popcorn in Nashville, and let's pretend you can find good popcorn somewhere else besides Kernels, you should ONLY buy from Kernels because: 1) It's locally owned. 2) It's run by three sisters. Badass boss ladies. 3) It's a black business. 4) When I went in there Mom/Boss Lady was working the counter, Dad/Husband was making the popcorn in the back, Grandpa was hanging out in the waiting room entertaining the two little kiddos running around. As Mom/Boss Lady was chatting with me Kiddo #1 bumped his head and burst into tears and screams. Mom scoops him up, soothes him, then continues checking me out while holding him and then ushers him into the back with his dad and sister. THAT is a family teamwork making the dream work. Kernels is why Yelp exists. Well, sorta. How often do you find yourself flying up & down Gallatin, looking at either side of the street and wondering, 'That's a business?' and moving about your merry way? Well, Gallatin has plenty of gems hidden in plain sight and but for sites like Yelp, you might not know about them... and that would be a shame. As a disclaimer, I have worked with Kernels on two different events. Before last week, though, I hadn't stepped inside their business. And, so as to keep everything on the up & up, I didn't reveal who I was when I was inside, so as to get a regular consumer experience. Spoiler alert: the star ratings are the real deal. The family who runs the business are some of the nicest, most sincere folks you'll meet. Friendly, inviting and engaging, I was able to talk with them about a number of topics and only a few had to do with popcorn. But, please believe, they know popcorn. I was tasked to get some gluten-free goodies and when I asked, I was led to the butter, since they couldn't verify the other flavors. By the time I left, they were able to verify that the white cheddar was gluten-free so I was able to leave with two small bags of popcorn for a total of $8. That works. The butter is just what it says it is. As far as the bagged stuff, it will satisfy in a way that can only be improved on by a big tub, wet 'butter' sauce, peanut M&Ms, a large root beer, and a big-screen movie. What? What's that look? The white cheddar, though... That white cheddar. I don't know if it makes sense to say that popcorn tastes homemade but when you try the white cheddar, you'll understand what I mean. It tastes like someone grated and melted white cheddar on popcorn but avoided a sticky, cloying mess. Yes, the popcorn is a bit greasy but I thought it legitimized the flavor all the more. You'll want to eat a small bag in one setting. That would be a mistake. 1.) Your gut will rebel. 2.) You're going to want some the next day. Use some restraint. I also had the chance to sample a few popped hot & spicy kernels. If hot & spicy is your thing, you'll love it. The heat builds and sneaks up on you. I am man enough to admit my strengths and weaknesses. I shall leave that alone. More white cheddar for me, please. read more

After trying bites of others I had to get my hands on my own bag. This is definitely a hidden gem in east Nashville. I passed it a lot of times without knowing it was there. When entering I was greeted with a smile and with sincere questions. I was looking for something sweet, and went with a caramel bag. It was soooo good! And, the service was awesome. I heard about Kernels today and had to stop in. Wow! We were traveling north on Gallatin Pike and it was a little hairy getting into the parking lot. It would have been much easier had we been traveling south, but it was worth the hassle of getting turned around. If you like gourmet and/or flavored popcorn, and I do, you are going to love this place! We went in with another couple and the four of us left with 5 different flavors. They will let you sample all pf their flavors before you ever make a decision. Honestly, I would have bought more but you never know how well fresh popcorn will keep. This place came to mind when I needed a snack to share at a "Back to the Future" trilogy party on that fateful day, October 21, 2015. Now "the future" is the past! Whoa. =| Anyway, had seen the shop and wanted to try it. Honestly, was surprised to see an actual popcorn shop in business nowhere near tourist traffic. Makes sense, though, cuz it's great! The staff are all family, I think, and they're really friendly. The caramel and cheddar "Music City" mix I got was fresh, even though it was closing time! No stale popcorn here. It was so good - a hit at the party. It's a little pricey for a snack that gets gobbled up so quickly, but it's totally worth it! It's fresh and gourmet and I like the idea of supporting a small family business in my neighborhood. I hope more pop up! (See what I did there? I found out about Kernels from Nashville Guru. I try to stay informed about new businesses in Nashville. I stopped by and was not disappointed! They offer both sweet and savory flavors. They also let you sample them if you like. Decisions, decisions! I decided to try the Eastside Mix and the Frosty. Both were great, but the Frosty is pretty awesome!
