I had a wonderful experience taking an iced matcha class at Kettl on Monday! I signed up for the class before I got to NY and was able to work it into my busy schedule of being a cool aunt. My brother and I walked around the Greenpoint area and then he had to go pick up his kiddo from camp, so I explored the area then put Kettl into google maps thinking I was coming early for class to avoid the rain. I accidentally went to the wrong location and then it started pouring. The staff told me the other location was 10 minutes away by foot, so I hauled myself to it in pouring rain. Luckily I wore workout clothes and tennis shoes that day, but my raincoat was water resistant, not waterproof, so I got pretty soaked. I still arrived a few minutes early, and the staff let me take some napkins to dry myself off. The class was at the bar in the back of this flagship location. It was set up for two, but I was the only person who showed. Jayanna led me through a very detailed class, provided handouts and a soba tea cookie along with water, and answered a ton of questions I had. As a daily matcha maker, I knew I had a lot to learn. She showed me how to care for the different tools used to make matcha. We made three preparations: sparkling matcha, shaken matcha, and matcha latte. We went through each with various steps and measurements. She demonstrated what to do and then I would make the drinks for both of us. It was a very fun experience and I learned a lot. I also got to shop after the class with a 15% discount, so I got myself a custom single cultivar matcha called okuju made exclusively for Kettl and especially for lattes, and then some individually wrapped fancy tea bags of matcha genmai and hojicha for Eric when he travels. The class had an hour and a half of instruction and I spent a half hour asking about products and shopping. It is a very nice space and I would love to try some of the unique drinks on the menu plus take more classes. If you love matcha and learning, I recommend taking a class here or at the LA location if you are on the west coast! read more

Kettl is a bit overrated imo. I tried the shirakawa matcha latte, their highest grade for matcha lattes. I thought it was decent, but I feel like it could've been stronger. It also wasn't creamy enough for a latte. The shiso white peach matcha soda was a fun experimental drink, but I feel like for a matcha drink, the matcha flavor was definitely dominated by the shiso and white peach flavors. It is a very cozy-sized cafe but truly grateful for the quality matcha available here. I was able to enjoy all of our ordered matcha straight up given the high quality. You can also pick up a wide range of matchas from different regions and beautiful teaware as well. My only disappointment was the baked good - we got a slice of bread/cake and it was atrociously dry!! Kettl is the best matcha shop in Brooklyn by far. When I walked in I was hit by the AC and tea scent and I would've paid just for that experience. I got the iced Uji matcha latte and it had a deep earthy flavor. I added honey which they had already melted a bit so that it was easy to stir in and not get clumpy (extra points for that)! Super cute spot, very Instagrammable and aesthetic. Got the black tea and it was just a bit boring, placed into a fancy beaker. Would've been nice if they offered some sort of black tea based latte. If I remember correctly, the loaf was miso and pistachio. Couldn't taste much miso unfortunately. The seating is my main complaint. We came as a group of 3, people had already spread across the one shared table in the entire place. We tried sitting at the bar, but they told us we weren't allowed to move the chairs. So we ended up shuffling around the remaining table chairs, maybe breaking their rules again? Not sure why they were so uptight when there wasn't anyone at the bar and clearly not enough seating in the space, despite having enough room. Has potential but not sure I would return. read more

Ordered: Suiteki (Nishio) Matcha Cortado (~$7) Aya's take: I remember having one of the best matchas here, and found myself back at Kettl on a cold day this time. I got the Suiteki (Nishio) Matcha Cortado and let me just say I love the concept of a cortado size for matcha as opposed to a latte. The only difference is amount of milk and if you don't want the extra calories, this is perfect! The Suiteki (Nishio) is described as creamy & floral. I would still consider it on the earthy side, and personally added some honey syrup to enhance the flavors to my liking which helped tremendously. I had found Kettl on Instagram, so I was already a little suspicious whether or not this would be the real deal or just some influencers hype, but it was the real real deal and it was perfect. This is a really cute tea shop nestled in Greenpoint. I've heard amazing things about the Matcha, and I wasn't super impressed unfortunately. To be fair, I tried the Hojicha but they are also well known to have great Hojicha. It was clumpy and grainy unfortunately. It wasn't obscenely overpriced though which is a plus here in NYC. One thing is that the girl that took my order was a bit rude. The other people working there were very nice, but she was visibly annoyed at having to take an order. I do want to go back and try the matcha since it is supposed to be amazing and maybe this was an off day, but this was unfortunately a bit of a miss. read more

I have gone to Kettl with a reservation in the past and I deeply enjoyed the experience. The drinks have a distinct grassy/vegetal flavor which help me feel in tune with nature. This is as fresh as matcha gets - and reminds me of some of the matcha/hojicha I got in Japan. The environment is what you would expect in a upscale tea/drink shop - peaceful, aromatic, clean, vibes of a relaxing Saturday morning, all day, every time it's open. Despite many matcha places opening up in New York, I still find Kettl's matcha drinks and desserts to be within my top 5 for the city! This is my first time at the Brooklyn location and I really liked the zen vibes and minimalistic decor. I prefer a more earthy, grassy matcha (aka the uji) but I wanted to switch it up and went for the nishio in a hot cortado format. It was indeed very creamy and floral. I also got to try the yame matcha latte with oat milk. The yame itself is advertised to be more nutty and the oat milk definitely amplified it. Both drinks had really well mixed matchas with a good milk ratio respectively. While I would give their matcha and location a 5, I dropped it to 4 for this particular location due to their service. I'm not sure what didn't click but we had so much trouble trying to order the usucha matcha. We tried the name usucha twice and even tried alternative names like the short serving. She said a bunch of things but didn't really explain if it wasn't available or had other recommendations. We gave up and went for the yame matcha instead. I've been a Kettl fan for years and can't believe I never took the time to write a review until now. I love matcha/hojicha drinks and things so I'm keen on trying the million new spots that keep opening up around the city but in the end, I always come back to Kettl. The quality of matcha/hojicha is consistently top notch. They typically have 3 different matcha options with different notes so you can choose based on your mood/preference. They offer a few snacky items like chocolates, cookies, and a soft serve (with a soba crunch topping that pairs perfectly). Kettl has a very relaxing vibe with a decent amount of indoor seating (some outdoor as well). It has a traditional feel to it with tea to browse and purchase along the walls (rather than embedding an "Instagram worthy" spot). Oh and there's a bathroom. What more can you ask for. read more

Love the Greenpoint location as it's convenient with all the local shops and restaurants! I love the ample amount of Japanese ceramics available for purchase. You have to be a tea enthusiast to appreciate this place. I was in absolute heaven. I love the variety of teas and matcha on the wall with the descriptions for each. It makes it easier to make a selection for drinking and buying for items you're unfamiliar with. I picked up a packet of genmaicha which I absolutely love. It was $20 for the bag which I found affordable compared to other quality shops. I ordered an iced matcha latte with oat milk. This comes sweetened with honey but you can add additional or simple syrup if you would like. I can't remember what type of matcha I ordered but it was their standard and the cheapest one on the menu if helpful. It is quite dull in complexity and pretty light so I would try a different version next time. However, it is still good. One of the baristas were really nice and helpful and the others could care less about being there haha. It does look like they do classes at this location which is pretty neat. I'll have to try next time if I'm looking for an activity with friends. If you're in the area, hopping around matcha spots, I would recommend this place. Kettl's passes this test, whether you're getting a straight up matcha or in their high quality soft serve. No artificial flavoring here, just ceremonial grade stuff. There are some tables and seats inside, and you can find people working on laptops inside on most days. The times I've visited have been very serene and quiet, so not the ideal place to catch up with a friend, unless you take your matcha to go. No more basic bitch strawberry matchas ;) Another favorite is their soba cookie crunch - not too sweet but still satiated that sugar cookie craving, with a perfectly baked and crispy shell and soft inside. I had been a longtime kettl customer through their online store, but since moving to the area, I can pick from their selection in person and grab a latte/dessert while I'm there. The crew is extremely knowledgeable and helpful when I'm torn between different tea options. They also have a tasting bar you can make a reservation at to try different teas - I haven't booked an appointment yet but I'd like to one of these days. Seating is semi limited. They have a long common table in the middle of the shop with 8-10 chairs. It's not a good place to set up and work at because it gets busy and seating is limited, but it's good if you want to sit down for 10 minutes while enjoying your drink. I saw this place on social media and was so curious to try since their matcha drinks had such a strong green matcha color. Finally was able to try it when I was in NY, and it was an awesome experience!
