I stayed at Kex again and had another really lovely experience. The room was great and I got plenty of rest. The sauna was so perfect to warm up with. I did experience a hit and run accident with my car parked on grand street. The last time I came I arrived by train so I didn't really pay attention to the parking situation. The parking is street parking for $4.5 an hour unless you find a nearby garage. The lot that is close to them goes for $15 an hour. It's worth it to look around a little for cheaper parking. read more

Overall, I liked my four-day stay at KEX Portland. The lobby is welcoming and well-organized for conversation and meeting people. There is a sweet outdoor space with a table at the back of the first floor, and a rooftop. Every morning, wonderful coffee was available for guests, and there was a gym and sauna in the basement. There is also a pretty great happy hour every day starting at 3 that includes both food and drinks, and the general decor and vibe is super cool and super clean. On my first night, I was in a single queen room with a shared bathroom, and that was ok, except for the fact that someone wandered in who was not staying at KEX and tucked into a couch located outside of my room in the hallway for the night. The staff was super helpful and moved me the next night to a room with its own bathroom, but the overall experience that night was a drag. Would I stay at KEX Portland in the future? yes! Would I recommend others to KEX Portland? yes! Oh, and one more thing...there is a Crema out the door and across the street to the left, where you can grab something for breakfast. read more

If KEX Portland would be more honest about their refund policy, and return my money for a stay that I never received, I might be inclined to give them a higher rating. Otherwise, please be advised that KEX Portland is a dishonest business, even toward its returning customers. After I booked in advance and paid on Expedia, they refused to give me a room or offer a refund. My first stay here was the night of October 18-19, 2024. Since the location was convenient in Downtown Portland, I reserved a room for a second time for the night of May 23-24, 2025. I showed up on May 23 with my ID but no credit card. They could not allow me to stay without my credit card, nor would they offer me a refund, so I had to sleep in my car that night without getting my money back. Their general manager, Alexa, told me that too long a time had passed by May 26 for me to receive a refund. I didn't see her message on Expedia because I was in Portland for the Memorial Day weekend and otherwise had no access to Wi-Fi to see her message. Regardless, they also offered me a discounted future stay, but refused to answer further when I inquired about it. It's bad enough that this is how they would treat a returning customer. But refusing a refund, forcing me to sleep on the streets, and failing to honor a commitment to a discounted future stay are all extremely dishonest and shady business practices. I am posting this so potential travelers won't experience the same thievery from KEX Portland that I did. read more

First time staying here but it won't be my last. Booked because I had to detour and hunker down to ride out the pending ice storm. Check in experience was excellent beginning with Emma? Emily? who took my call and thoughtfully advised me on best parking options; then Sophia at check in, and Rachel at check out. 201 was a really spacious room with large window high ceilings and a great sense of vintage decor. Check out the mini refrigerator in the clip below, and also the radio that actually works, and the style of the lamps by the bed. Absolutely beautiful marbling in the bathroom and shower areas, and truly very comfortable bed. Some of the rooms apparently are sharing a bathroom so I would highly recommend paying a little extra to have your own bathroom. The king ensuite I had was fantastic. Extremely comfortable bed. One of their best features: a private sauna. Just book your appointment as part of your stay -- they hand you the key and up to an hour of great heat is yours. There's a Lounge area on the main that is handicap accessible...and the Pacific Standard is open for drinks and food until a very decent city hour -- past 11 PM -- perfect place to weather the ice storm. I came to dine in for the first time. I was sitting in the corner by a pillar, waited 5-10mins without being greeted even after barback saw me. I stood up because I was aware that the beer tap was blocking me thats when the bartender acknowledged me and said "my well is over here honey". I asked her, "is that where you order?" She repeated, "my well is over here honey". So I walked over and waited another 5mins because there were 3 ladies in front of me. She offered me a menu then I told her I knew what I wanted. I decided to close out because I realized I wasn't the only one waiting on service. I signed my receipt at my seat. The barback cleaned the seats next to me so I gave my signed receipt with a sad face emoji. She then said, "next time let us know how we can fix it" When I received my meal, not once did I get checked on. I had asked for the aoili with my Chix sandwich when I ordered it & I did not receive it. So she gave up on the service completely even after I paid? And Im suppose to tell you how you can fix it? You didn't fulfill the request after you offered the aoili. You didn't check up on me while I was eating because I closed my check. More than 1 guest waited long enough for your attention. You want us to let you know how you can fix it? There was another guest next to me waiting to order too and after a while she rolled her eyes and left. Overall, I'd stay here again if I were to visit Portland. Context: I booked a private room with a shared bathroom. I got room on the 2nd floor. I was also visiting during PDXCW when many other folks were also staying here. Location: Great, a 10 minute bike ride to downtown and you're across the street from a Biketown station which is convenient. The coffee shop around the corner with plants has amazing sandwiches and the chocolate shop next door has a good Portland Fog. Staff - very friendly, there is always somebody at the desk if you need anything and were more than happy to help Bathrooms were always clean on my floor & I saw housekeeping every single day keeping things tidy. Improvements - the rooms don't come with a microwave or fridge, at least mine didn't but perhaps the King En-suite might. I love staying here when I'm in town, The hotel reminds me of the Ace in Palm Dessert. I love that they have a free sauna that you can reserve. The rooms are great and I like that you can get late night eats with Pacific Standard and bring it up to your room or vibe out in your floors sitting area. There were a couple of new front desk concierge kids. We really liked Bella and CJ. Bella printed out a few hotspots that the hotel likes, Coffin club was rad. I loved my stay at Kex so much. After moving from Portland nine months ago, I try to visit every 3-4 months for my favorite seasons and to see my friends. I had the opportunity to stay at Kex and I enjoyed everything about it so much. To start, the rooms & beds are really comfy. Whatever mattresses they're using I need for my home... both the rooms and entire hotel is thoughtfully decorated which such a perfect northwest / Portland vibe. The bathroom in my room was really big and I am obsessed with the tile they use on the floors. I also loved their soaps, shampoo and conditioners they use, which is important to me. Another thing I loved was that they do free coffee downstairs in the morning (or whatever time you request it) and it's realllly good coffee, which is a nice touch. I think they use Good Coffee, a classic Portland coffee shop loved by all the locals. Also to note, Kex can really be for anyones budget. Whether you're looking for a bunk in a shared space, a full deluxe king suite or even their queen deluxe suite which could sleep up to six people and is really spacious. They have something for everyone. Kex really puts the personality of the city into their aesthetics and they do it so tastefully. Highly recommend staying here if you're visiting Portland or even if you live here and are wanting a little staycation. read more

I booked a room with no knowledge that the rooms have no bathroom they are shared with the entire floor I checked into my room and the shades were broken so in order to close them the manager gave me binder clips...Ontop of that the aircoditioner was on the celieling and casted buelight on me all night as I slept!!! Rooms are really small and don't have many amenities. Housekeeping doesn't come unless you ask, but they will make you feel weird about making such a request. Walls are paper thin and you can hear other rooms and people in the hallway clear as day. Some rooms don't have bathrooms, be careful when booking. They also failed to mention that there was a wedding happening one of the nights we were staying and that they would be blaring music until midnight. We're currently trying to go to bed and the music is bumping and the wedding guests are right outside of our window hooting and hollering. I wouldn't have booked here had I known that they would be partying all night or at the very least asked for a room that isn't close to the event. Shame on the management for not telling the guests as there were apparently several other people who called the front desk to complain. Don't recommend booking here due to the lack of transparency. Update: it's past midnight and they're still partying outside. Called the front desk to find out what time it was going to end and the lady who answered the phone was adamant that the party was over and what I'm hearing is the cleaning crew cleaning up. I highly doubt that the clean up crew is screaming side talk quips like "F*** YA LIFE, BING BONG" but maybe that's just me. She was incredibly rude and I cannot tell you to stay away from this place more. Terrible experience, do not stay here. read more

TLDR: If you want a quiet place to rest skip this place. The hotel itself is cute, rooms are nice, and having Pacific Standard downstairs is really convenient. If you're over 40 and want a nice place to rest after an evening out, DO NOT book here. It feels more like a hostel, and being on the corner of MLK and Couch means lots of traffic noise. We had neighbors come back to their room at 2:30am and proceeded to laugh, yell, and smoke weed until 4am. It made our room smell like weed, which annoyed the hell out of my wife. We came to stay here for date night and it was nothing but a good time. Check in is easy at 3pm and check out is at 11am. We got a Queen bed with an attached bathroom. The bed was perfectly firm. The bathroom tile was beautiful. It took a few moments for the water to warm up but once it did, it was great. I saw a vent on the ceiling but couldn't find a switch for the fan. The soap, shampoo, and conditioner were all good. We had dinner and drinks at Vivian and had a blast. It was the hotel's 2nd night open so there were a few hiccups. The fire alarm went off during dinner. The staff remained calm and guided us all outside. When we came back in, they passed out the tastiest champagne. We tried to use the sauna but turns out it got too hot and caused that fire alarm. Glad they could test out the sprinkler system and are well prepared. In the morning, I grabbed a cup of coffee downstairs but they were also offering a buffet style breakfast for $15. All in all, a really good time. Highly recommend checking this place out. Just came back from Portland. So hyped on this place! I can only speak to the hotel part but honestly that's enough for me. I was nervous at first because this was a work trip and someone else was booking the accommodations. But wow did they hit a homer with this place. I called earlier in the day because I was checking in after midnite and didn't want any no-show drama and the rep actually checked me in early. So when I got there late night all I did was show my ID and grab my key. I had a private king en-suite and the room was sparkling clean. Seriously. And the bathroom was the best. Kinda had a deco-modern vibe going on. King size bed, TV loaded with all the movie and TV apps. Restaurants were closed due to Covid but it was super easy to get coffee and tea from reception. I especially loved all of the nooks and crannies where I could sit and people watch or read a book. I have to return in the near future - take a guess where I'll be staying. read more

I have very mixed feelings about my recent stay at KEX so here's the good, the bad, and the ugly. First the good: Every single front desk and bar/waitperson I encountered was genuinely relaxed,friendly, and helpful. 10+ stars for the staff. They're awesome. The general vibe, decor, and ambiance is also amazing. The lounge/restaurant is a great place for a remote work day, a family get together or a girls night out. However if you scratch the surface there are a lot of problems. KEX seems to be targeting the "grown up hostel" market and fails miserably on a couple important points. First, there is no kitchen. Not even a microwave or mini fridge in the dorms. Nada. Also no on-site laundry. Based on this I feel it's false advertising for them to post on hostel world where I found them. It's not a hostel. It's a hotel where you're forced to eat at the hotel restaurant which has limited hours and a limited (and lackluster) menu. Cocktails are good though! Additionally, while the bunk rooms look pretty, my cubby was full of trash and the lock box under my bed also had a bunch of garbage including a bottle of RUSH the likes of which I haven't seen since the late 80's. Communal bathrooms suffered the same fate. High end tiles and shampoo etc, but in serious need of housekeeping. At 8am on a Sunday all 3 bathrooms on the second floor had overflowing trash cans, used towels everywhere, hair in drains and random personal care items left behind. I chalked it up to a busy weekend and left for the day only to find they hadn't been touched when I came home that evening. Other posters have mentioned walls are paper thin and I concur. While dorm mates were quiet and respectful in the shared space, there was lots of yelling in the hallways and an argument between some couple in a private room about their shoes. I developed a pretty nasty cold/cough on my second night and the front was super helpful in upgrading me to a private room which was awesome (minus the shoe fight). KEX is a moderately affordable hotel that almost gets it right. With some work on their menu and marketing it could be a winner. read more

On the plus side, the location is good, the common areas are lovely, the staff is friendly, and the rooftop bar is cool. And I loved the music! The downside was that my view was of an air conditioning unit. More importantly, the windows are sadly single paned and my room was above their outdoor bar/restaurant, which stayed open until midnight (2:00 am my time). The prices here make zero sense. I stayed in a nice, big room with a private bathroom for $10 more than when they moved me last minute, and had me stay in a claustrophobic TINY room that barely fit the bed and I had to share a messy bathroom with the floor. The price difference was $10. It's very loud here because of the location overlooking MLK, with very poor, if any, sound insulation, and the internet is a mess. The staff aren't friendly and they have no idea what they're doing. They look very unhappy to be there, and most are new, so a high turnover rate. The rooms are not cleaned well at all - there is wadded up chewing gum on the floor, dust EVERYWHERE, it covers every surface and is especially obvious on the lamps that have not been wiped down in months. Ew. It's gross. Go to LoLoPass instead - a FAR better deal. Both are quite scammy (if you stay more than 30 days in PDX you are required to be given your lodging tax back - remember that and demand it!), but you get a much better deal for your money at Lolo Pass. Also - Kex has no refrigerator, no place to store food, unlike their actual Hostel location in Reykjavík, Iceland. It's less like a hostel and more like a very overpriced SRO. I'd go anywhere else. Viking Motel is cheaper, has a fridge, is quieter, and is right on the yellow line for public transit. This place is overpriced with poor service, messed up prices, rude staff, and much fewer options than most places in town. read more

Overall, KEX is a unique property and was a pleasant stay, though not caveat-free. On my most recent PDX visit, I had the opportunity to stay in a queen family suite, a 16 person bunk room and a 4 person bunk room at nearby Lolo Pass, (likely KEX's most comparable property). So I write this review from a comparative rather than purely subjective sense. As a background, I'm a frequent traveler, travel agent and own a small lodging business. The vibe at KEX is solid. The style is a sort of modern art deco and reminded me a lot of Ace hotels but with a slightly less dreary and more welcoming aesthetic. The lobby is fab, with plenty of seating. The bar had great drinks, a solid food menu and moreover was open late (midnight on weekdays, full menu included). Khruangbin-heavy playlist on a solid sound system? Check. All in, a comfortable and stylish place to hang. Awesome. Also, the staff was super friendly though most members I encountered were within their first month of employment, usually a management red flag for me but also not uncommon this day and age. Shout-out to Zoe, she is a real sweetheart! The sauna was an unexpected perk and ultimately what swayed me booking a second night here vs Lolo Pass. Only one party is allowed at a time due to "safety" (COVID?) which seemed a bit excessive to me but it appeared an underutilized area of the property and thus had no issues using it whenever. This was an awesome experience, especially as a respite during my second night in a shared bunk room, because there's a shower down there so you have your own private suite for sweating and showering. This was a truly invigorating and luxurious way to start the day despite being in a budget accommodation. The queen room was nice, reasonably stylish and would fit 6 guests in comfort. Way too much space for one but hey Also the queen mattress was superb and bedding quality excellent. The place also had a nice charm of old meets new in this refurbed historic building. On the other hand, the single pane windows let in a lot of sound, especially as my room overlooked the outdoor lounge downstairs and it happened to be 4th of July. Nothing some earplugs couldn't fix but I'd rather have modern windows than these relics for noise purposes. Similarly, the stylish curtains did not close fully letting some light through in the middle. Here's where things went off the rails: I originally booked a shared bunk and checked in online as prompted by email. During, I was offered a selection of upgrade rooms (at cost, though less than rack rate) but without making a selection, was taken to the next screen indicating I had selected a queen deluxe room at the same nightly rate ($45) I'd originally booked for the bunk room. The browser wouldn't let me go back, so I cautiously continued and finished the check in process. I arrived, checked in and then was surprised to walk into a room with 4 bunk beds, an adjacent queen bed and private bath with no separation between rooms. Adding to the confusion, there were some sunglasses and a few hanging magnets left behind. Confused (what room did I book? Was I bunking with a sun-averse robot?), I immediately went back to the front desk to verify if I was sharing a room and moreover if the nightly rate I was quoted was accurate. I was assured I was and that I had the whole run of the space. Elated and surprised, I inquired about extending at that rate for my final night in town but was told that it was likely a same day deal and to inquire the next morning with the front desk manager. Understandable; no biggie. But then next morning, I spoke with manager Rachel and was informed not only could I not extend at that rate but that I had been charged full bore some $160 and change for the night. Perplexed, I showed her a screenshot of the confirmation showing the $45 nightly rate quoted and she retorted "well I obviously I can't possibly honor that rate". After a brief back and forth, we settled on splitting the difference. I normally would've pressed the issue more but I was already contemplating the upgrade in the first place and felt the room was a solid value at ~$100 for the night (weekday, mind you). Nonetheless, I left feeling slighted and that some light bait and switching was afoot. Anyway, based on my pleasant hostel experience at nearby Lolo and the overall impression of KEX, later that day I decided to book a bunk for my final night. Despite the lower price point, I was less impressed by the value of accommodation especially on the heels of a fantastic stay at a comparable price and accommodation at Lolo. Firstly, I was disappointed to find the top bunks don't have a privacy curtain for some reason. This makes a big difference in light/noise and comfort levels. Furthermore, the only storage offered to the bunks were noisy drawers immediately under the bunks with no apparent locking device. One of the best hostels I have ever stayed in. I had the absolute pleasure of staying in this hostel's 16 bed shared rooms. Each bed comes with outlets, a lamp, organizers, and a locker. The beds are made every single afternoon, which is a very nice touch for a hostel. I only really expect that type of service in an actual hotel! The bathrooms are impeccably clean and are maintained every day. They provide shampoo, conditioner, fresh towels (daily), and bodywash in each of the showers. Save your money and come to this hostel, as it is only $33 dollars a night. You will feel luxurious even in a hostel setting. Their restaurant is amazingly good. Except for the thing about sharing the room with other lodgers, hostel-style, this is a swank hôtel. The floors in the one-person-at-a-time bathrooms are marble and the showers provide abundant hot water, the hallways are quiet and feel like a Pacific Northwest lodge should, the restaurant on the first floor (Pacific Standard) is a nice place to hang out even if you never buy anything. The bedrooms are quiet, the windows open, and the furniture is solid enough that having a bunkmate who shifts around won't wake you up. And I didn't think this would be an issue until the last hostel I'd stayed at, but the staff is helpful and doesn't give an air of being annoyed that you're bothering them. The food needs some work. We came for happy hour and got the cava and a sour IPA- both were great. We got a pickled egg- pretty good but 1/2 an egg for $3. The fried chicken was actually terrible. The flour coating was unseasoned, burned, and brittle. It left a bitter coating in my mouth. It was $15 for a fatty burned chicken thigh, a couple loose pieces of lettuce, a couple pickles, and a tiny amount of sauce. Do not recommend. We stayed in a private room with en suite bathroom, but there appears to be plenty of shared bathrooms along the hall if you don't want to spend the extra money to have your own. Room was small and cozy, comfortable bed and the decor was a fun mix of antique furnishings including the headboard of the bed that was a re purposed fireplace. Check in was super easy, they even send an e-mail a couple of days before your arrival and you can do a pre-check in that speeds things up even more. Really only thing would be if there was a bit more room around the bed, the bathroom had a huge shower, might sacrifice a bit of room there for more room in the main part of the room. But still a great experience. We didn't check out the roof top bar or the sauna on this trip but this is now on our list of places to stay when we do quick weekend trips up to Portland. read more
