They didn't seem to be busy either - just kind of out of it. If you are in the area - I'd say look elsewhere. I stayed at the hostel next door, and this cafe was a lifesaver. For days when I didn't have the energy to go out and find food, it was the perfect spot to pop in for something quick. The prices are reasonable, and the staff is really sweet. The food isn't anything mind-blowing, but it definitely does the job if you want a hearty, convenient meal. For what it is, it's good. Would I come here if it weren't attached to the hostel? Probably not, but it's great for what you need when staying nearby. read more

The café is actually attached to a small downtown hostel, so it's very quaint and cute. They have many offerings at very reasonable price points. The service and experience on getting our meals and beverages was excellent. But unfortunately the meal itself was about a 3.5. the Matcha Latte was good, I did ask for (and pay for) a little bit of vanilla syrup to be added but I didn't really taste a trace of it. And unfortunately the latte was mostly frothed up throughout the whole drink, so the latte wasn't as smooth as other baristas have made for me throughout Portland. The Créme Brulée French toast was a bit burnt on the sides from the carmalized sugar on the top that they flambéed and the portion was certainly significant. However I had hoped for there to be maybe a custard or creme to make it more like a Créme Brulée instead of just the crunchy sugar topping, so I was a bit disappointed. The staff was very friendly and welcoming, I will have to come back again to try some other dishes as the choices and price point are pretty great, I just hope they don't reflect the quality of the meals themselves read more

Americano 16oz $3 Cascadia Espresso akin to a Stumptown :/ brew, and Marsee iced Lemon Poppy Scone $3.50 needed warming to soften the dryness and corner ends esp. but overall enjoyable enough and loved the spaces. Water filter station is inside side dining room with glasses to help yourself. Space is very clean and in good repair and a calm vibe and maybe time of year with less visitors. If it's been a lifetime since your last hostel visit, Euro backpacking in youth lol it seems that all we've visited for sips around the globe have a definite uptown new gen appeal. Lots of events Open Mic, Music, that even locals can get in on and they show every Timbers game on Big screen. Got Taps for brews and vine + fresh cut fries, dirty or garlic thyme, to burger out on 100% grass fed patties. Lovely little cafe offering a solid breakfast menu. Early hours, which is nice as many places in the Nob Hill area don't open until later. Order at counter. Customer service was OK-ish, not super friendly, but efficient. The meal was good and so was the mimosa, but for $25.30, including tip the price was a little high for the meal. They do offer live music, and a variety of entertainment, which is awesome. But I'm not sure I would have a meal there again. Perhaps only a beverage. Pay to park on the street. read more

My friend and I decided to check out the cafe for dinner to reignite our love for hostels + solo travel! We came on a Monday night where they had live music + an open mic night. The performers were great and really added to the sweet summer nights here in the city. It also was a packed house, which was great to see for the performers. My friend and I chose their burgers, I immediately ordered their house made veggie burger which I really enjoyed. Fries were an extra $3. Overall, large portions and worth it. I stopped in one morning after having some blood drawn at the hospital to eat something because I felt woozy and thought it would be nicer than the hospital cafeteria. Boy was I wrong. I ordered biscuits and gravy based on another review and was extremely disappointed. It was 12 dollars añd the biscuit was stale and chewy while the "gravy" was thin and watery with a rancid taste and mostly was a pile of overcooked ground pork. I couldn't force myself to eat it and brought it strait to the counter and said I did not like it, but there was no offer to replace it with anything else or refund my money. I used to like to come here for coffee and baked goods (which is why I thought they might have a good biscuit) but I will not ever be returning. For 12 dollars I would expect food that is not old and stale and rancid. Gravy should be creamy and biscuits flakey. They have totally missed the mark and lost a customer. I'd rather make my way home lightheaded then eat what they served me. read more

I walk by here regularly and remember when the cafe opened, but realize I never actually went inside or ate at the Hostel Cafe. Anyways, I came to try the 2025 sandwich week option- the vegetarian version of Toastie Tuna with chickpeas instead of tuna. The combo sounded odd but it was surprisingly good. The cafe is really cute and laid back. There's more seating in the common area and there's a small outside patio. There's also beer and kombucha on tap and they have a daily happy hour. There's other breakfast, as well as burger and sandwich options. Great spot for locals and visitors. This will become a more regular breakfast or lunch spot. read more

I'll had a burger since its burger week it's called the cowboy killer and nothing was dead on this beside the meat : Smoked cheddar cheese, zesty garlic horseradish aioli, crispy fried onions, tomato, and lettuce, served on a buttered toasted brioche bun. It's always a sign of a chef that k owe his profession when the bins are toasted! It gives it an extra crisp and also makes sure the bins not soggy from the mayo or ketchup. This was the perfect spot to get lunch. We ordered food to go for two families with a variety of diets. The granola was served in a clear coffee cup (not a mug) and the cup was half full at $9 with milk, not even yogurt. The parfait, consisting of granola, yogurt and fruit was better but it was just a big clear cup at $14. It was hard to eat because the cup was stuffed so the first several bites were either fruit (grapes, blueberries and strawberries), granola or yogurt. The music is solid but not too loud, the prices for a drink are very reasonable, and the wifi is strong. The windows are open when the weather is good as is the back patio (heads up though that their wifi is spotty back there). They even sometimes have live music. The breakfast burger, baked eggs, fruit cup, and coffee were worth stopping in this morn. We had not been here before after living nearby for 5 years and we are glad we have remedied that! The hazelnuts on the baked eggs were toasted, which really gave them a nice crunch and took this dish to the next level. The eggs themselves were slightly under hard and the tomato sauce was rich and well-seasoned. The fruitcup was a lovely combo of summer fruit: Strawberries, blueberries, peaches... as well as some banana and apple. Delicious! The roll for the breakfast burger was soft yet could support the toppings. The burger itself was well-done and we may have preferred a temperature option, but it was delicious nonetheless. This place is great! Charming and intimate yet many places to explore and eat or drink and be merry. There was a string music festival in town the week we came in and they were using the space to play for hours each day which was very overwhelming for the small spaces but so lovely at the same time. There is an alive energy about this being a part of the hostel. I had the salmon burger which is their own handmade patty that was D-lish! All the right notes with a great juicy patty that was unexpected and very enjoyable. My boyfriend had the Breakfast Burger which was also a solid hit. They have a great serving sized burger but you do have to order sides separately which is not one of my favorite things but certainly normal these days. The desserts are delectable. They were out of the brownie that evening but I will be going back for it you bet your bottom dollar! This is a great place to get a warm drink, a snack or meal before a show at the Mission Theatre just down the block. read more

A really cool cafe located in NW area. I never realized how big the cafe was and what they served. Its cool to see a good diverse crowd of people hanging out here as I assume a majority are guests staying at the hostel. The food here is pretty good and the service is fast, considering its burger week. I had their Cuban Burger, which tasted pretty good. I love that they were not light on my pickles. The combination of pickles, mustard, and grilled piece of ham went well on the burger. read more
