I have been staying at the Marc Spencer for 30 years. And it's always been a pleasurable experience. Over the decades of watching it transform from a budget friendly converted boarding house to an absolutely lovely and well appointed full service hotel while still maintaining reasonably priced rooms has been terrific. You can't beat the location. I just right downtown near everything. Yet very quiet. It doesn't have an elaborate restaurant, but it does have some on site provisions. It doesn't have a cocktail lounge, but it does have nightly wine tasting. It doesn't have its own parking garage, but it does have parking options.

    So cute!

Wow! Great service, clean and comfy rooms, and you're right in the heart of downtown. As soon as I checked in, I was greeted warmly and even shared a few laughs and conversations with the front desk staff. They were very helpful and informative about what's around the area, and they also offer a wine and cheese hour from 5-6. Absolutely impeccable service! They made my experience in Portland wonderful. Thank you!

Booked this place because the group I went with had booked this place and we wanted to be near one another. I LOVED IT! One person at the front desk was super sweet wish I had caught their name. But the rooms we had were very nice and both had some great views. Very easy to get to and walk to places like powells book store and Buffalo exchange. Parking was a little sketchy because it wasn't covered but very accessible. They also had happy hour and offered you some wine/champagne and had cheese and crackers. I was able to go one time and it was very nice and relaxing. Definitely has an old school ambiance to it. I would stay here again.

We love love the Mark Spencer. The staff is so wonderful the room is unbelievable the location is perfect. We live in seattle and come down just for the weekend so we can stay here and we always bring our dog.

This hotel was booked through hotel tonight and I couldn't have been happier. I was able to enjoy my stay for an event downtown and really enjoyed the atmosphere, the staff, and the amenities. I've not tried the food. However, the water in the lobby was absolutely perfect with just enough lemon, and lots of extra ice. My favorite touches of this hotel was the very modern/vintage upgrades , effortless check-in process , effortless check out, and very convenient location in downtown Portland.

Can't go wrong with a little wine & cheese

My husband and I stayed here for a night recently with our dog for a little not-too-far-cation. The staff here is amazingly friendly and helpful. We arrived just in time for the complimentary wine & cheese hour, which was a nice surprise. The little sitting area in the lobby was perfect for relaxing with our pup. There are also some snacks and items you might have forgotten for sale at the front desk. There is underground parking that is easy to access from the lobby. We didn't get the pet welcome kit described on the website, but I forgot to ask about it, so no big deal. The location was nice. We did see some people while walking the area around the hotel who were obviously affected by addiction. I probably would have felt unsafe if I was walking alone. We walked to Powell's, our favorite bookstore in the world, and easily picked up a takeout dinner which we enjoyed in the room. Our room had a little kitchenette, which was fully stocked, and the king bed was so comfortable! Our window faced a brick wall, so no view, but it was nice and quiet. I detracted a star for a few little things: There is technically a fitness room, but it's kind of a sad basement room with old machines situation, so, if the fitness room is important to you, keep looking. Second, Mr. Spencer, please be more generous with the towels. Yes, two people can survive with just two towels but having one backup would be nice! The shower control was weird - basically, there was just one control for both temperature and pressure. if you want full pressure, you also have to have full heat, or, if you want to cool it off a bit, you're getting less pressure. I settled for a comfortable temperature and less pressure. I need a cool room when I sleep but either the AC in our room didn't work or I couldn't figure it out, but the room was warm. I called the front desk and the awesome staff brought a fan to the room to keep me cool and saved the day! Last note, if you have your heart set on the coffee shop or cafe, it's not open on Mondays or Tuesdays. That's ok, there are plenty of other great places in the area!

I chose this hotel for its king corner room with a living room and kitchenette. The photos online looked exactly like the room - it was clean and gorgeous. The staff was incredible from start to finish, allowing us to check in early, providing an umbrella when I forgot, letting us know about live music and complimentary wine hour, and inviting us to return in the summer for their rooftop concerts. Make sure to eat at Cheryl's on 12th, which also provides room service to the hotel.

We got a last-minute deal through a third party to stay one night during the holidays so we could visit some friends. It worked out great. We requested a King bed and they were able to accommodate us so the three of us (including my six-year-old) were able to snuggly fit in one bed. We were centrally located, just two blocks from Powell's. The best was that parking was only $28 a night so we were able to stash the car in an underground lot and it didn't cost half as much as the room. They had a small but quaint lobby and the whole place had a classy vibe. They had complementary coffee and tea (but only had one black and one green tea since the camomile was out) all day and a free wine (with some crackers and cheese cubes) from 5:00-6:00 in the evening. Breakfast could be purchased at reasonable prices in the morning and we enjoyed some breakfast sandwiches that they heated up in the toaster oven to order. I noticed a few employees also getting breakfast so I knew it must be good. We'll have to check them out in the summer when we can walk around downtown and explore more. Definitely a good value but a very nice place!

This was our comforter.. they did replace it with a new one.

Ask the Community - The Mark Spencer Hotel

I see it has parking available is this a garage, lot, or street? If garage is there a cost? If lot is it somewhat secure? Thanks

We have a gated underground garage and a well-lit lot across the street from the main hotel. The rate for both locations is $32/night.

Home base for 3 nights while I was in town for a friend's wedding…read more I've been coming to PDX for nearly 9 years now, but this was my first time staying downtown. I've always stayed with a friend who lives outside of town. My stay here was enjoyable. Most notably, the bed was super comfortable and soft. I slept so well. The blackout curtains was a nice touch. The weather didn't permit for early morning activities so I always slept in. I took one star for a couple of reasons. First being that I tried to check in about an hour before the 4pm checkin time thinking it would be accommodated, but alas that was not the case. I checked in my luggage and walked across the bridge and got a much needed caffeinated beverage. I got back under an hour and was finally able to get in my room. The room was clean, but not even 5 mins into me unpacking, housekeeping was at my front door asking if I had found anything in the drawer. There was in fact the previous guest's clothing in 2 of the drawers. So yeah, that was off putting. The second thing is that there was in fact no tea in my room. It would've been nice to have it at night when it was colder. Pros: I appreciated that the bathroom had all the products needed which was perfect since I forgot to bring shampoo. Also not a fan of the daily charge for the amenities. Personally, I think only the guests who use the fitness facilities should be charged said fees. It feels like highway robbery to be charged $29 daily when you don't use the gym. What if I was here a full week? That's bonkers. I got to use the gym the day I checked out. This area was dramatically quieter than the other side of the bridge. That's where the riff raffery was. It always felt so relaxing as soon as I entered the front door. As soon as I got to my room, it was silence. The Providence Park tram stop is just 2 mins away on foot. This means you can take the red line to the airport ins of taking an uber. I made sure to have breakfast at Gracie's and a nightcap at Driftwood, both on the opposite side of reception.

After my stay, I had left my hairdryer in the room. The next day I called hoping they would be able to ship it to me. Cat (Kat?) answered the phone and said she found it. I know she found it because she also asked if I had left a brush, which I did. She said she could ship it, but just needed me to pay for shipping first, asked for my email, and said she would send an email to handle that. I never received an email. After a few days, I asked my mom, who is local, if she could just go down and pick it up since I was heading out of the country for a week. She went down to the hotel, but was told they didn't have it. Not only that but there were no notes in the system about it either. Zero information about my previous call or that they were waiting for payment to ship it. So I again called and got Thomas who searched everywhere and couldn't find it any longer. I asked for a manager to call me, this was 2 days ago. Still no call. I can only assume at this point that an employee stole my expensive hair dryer, which is why there were no notes about it and I never received any emails. I'd avoid this hotel in the future. Update 4/30/2026: Since posting this review, the situation has gotten significantly worse. On April 13, I received an automated text from ILeftMyStuff, the hotel's own lost and found system, confirming my hair dryer and brush were found and logged on March 1. I paid for return shipping through their system that same day and never received my items. On April 19 I called and spoke with a staff member named Claudia who confirmed the hotel had my items and would ship them. She later walked that back, saying she had only assumed they were there because they appeared on an internal list. I had previously requested a manager call me back. That call never came. Today the hotel is claiming the items were disposed of on April 1. This is the same staff member, Cat, who originally found my items and confirmed she had them. When my mother went to the hotel in person and when I called, we were both told they had no record of the items whatsoever. They did not notify me before disposing of them despite having my contact information on file from my original call. Note that my original review was posted last month, before April 1 when they supposedly "disposed" of my items.

There's a restaurant on the 15th floor that had a line at the elevator because they wanted to access it without a key, and I think that's what kept the elevator area busy. The rooms are pretty big and spacious, with your usual amenities and mini-bar items. The couch was a good size.
