Let me preface this by saying that I am a self-professed hotel snob. This place is great! It reminds me a lot of the hotels in mid-town New York. Visiting Portand for the first time? This place is perfect you're literally a stone's through from the iconic Powell's books and a variety of Portland eateries. Friendly staff, great rates for budget conscious travelers. Never stayed in a hotel in Portland before so I honestly did not know what to expect. My buddy was the one who booked this place so I assumed he did his research and got something good. And he definitely did. This hotel is conveniently located close to a lot of things like Powell's, Washington Park, restaurants and the like. It is in an excellent location. The workers are all very cordial and would greet us coming in and out of the lobby and one was even kind enough to get me hot water for tea when I asked for some. The rooms themselves are quite clean. Ours had two beds and a pullout couch which was very comfortable. The bathroom was also very clean and offered a body wash, shampoo and conditioner. They even had a kitchenette in the room with a microwave and stove and everything, we did not end up using any of it but it was nice to know all of that was in there in case we needed it! read more

In trying to find a hotel near the places I wanted to go to in Portland (Powell's, eateries) that didn't require a car, I came across the Mark Spencer Hotel. I have stayed there a few times and the majority of my stays have been excellent. I know that when Mina is working at the front desk, everything will be a smooth check-in. They have tried to accommodate early check-ins when they can by checking me in, letting me leave my luggage and then taking down my cell number to call if they can take me in earlier. The location is perfect. Just a few minutes walk to Powell's or Thai Peacock as well as the bus lines. No need for a car for me! The rooms vary. I've stayed in a really nice King room and another time was in a room where the bathroom seat looked yellow and chipped and the bathroom lighting was dim. The walls aren't very thick either so be prepared to hear your neighbors if they aren't quiet. The last time I went with a group of friends and we were put into the king suite and the room next door. The suite was comfortable and spaciousness with a small kitchenette that came with a microwave, fridge, coffeemaker, bowls, utensils and cleaning sponges and dishwashing detergent. There was also plenty of room for the four of us to watch K-Pop Demon Hunter together on the sofa and an armchair. They serve coffee and tea in the lobby area. When I first came years ago, it was only available in the morning but now they have it all the time which I appreciate. I am an avid tea lover and they have my favorite Stash tea! They also have a happy hour for people to grab a glass of wine and chill out. I'm always out and about so I've never taken advantage of it but on my way out the last stay I had a chance to talk to the bartender and he was very friendly. Everyone at the front desk at check out and check in were very helpful and friendly. At check in, Shannon, helped get us in a room with a pull out couch for our daughter, which was very much appreciated. The room was very clean and comfortable. Having the fridge and microwave was great to store and warm up our leftovers. They have free coffee and tea and espresso drinks for purchase. Two blocks to Powell books was a bonus! Tons of walkable restaurants nearby. Our daughter loved the pizza by the slice at Sizzle Pie and we enjoyed Thai take out from Moo Deng. As we were checking out, the front desk crew were very attentive and helpful with tips. One of the team members was calmly and respectfully dealing with an issue from someone claiming they had a reservation at the hotel (my husband had seen that person on the street earlier that morning). They did a very good job at de-escalating the issue and guiding the person outside. There are a lot of unhoused individuals outside, but that's a situation all around downtown. There are security and police patrolling so we didn't feel unsafe walking around, but it's definitely an issue and sad and somewhat disturbing to see. I would definitely recommend this hotel for the great location, cleanliness and helpful team members. read more

I have been staying at the Marc Spencer for 30 years. And it's always been a pleasurable experience. Over the decades of watching it transform from a budget friendly converted boarding house to an absolutely lovely and well appointed full service hotel while still maintaining reasonably priced rooms has been terrific. You can't beat the location. I just right downtown near everything. Yet very quiet. It doesn't have an elaborate restaurant, but it does have some on site provisions. It doesn't have a cocktail lounge, but it does have nightly wine tasting. It doesn't have its own parking garage, but it does have parking options. read more

We selected the Mark Spencer based on proximity to MAX lines to take us to the Oregon Zoolights. We loved the aesthetic of the photos from the website but found ourselves somewhat catfished. The Pros: friendly staff, location, ambiance, the kitchenette! The Cons: the beds (TOO firm, duvets without covers) The cleanliness (traveled with toddlers and when toys disappeared under the bed we found dust, debris, trash, and items from past occupants, ew). The elevators are TINY (not double stroller friendly) Cleanliness AGAIN (bathroom grout, tub lining) The breakfast: Worst latte I've ever had in my life, menu straight from the freezer section of Walmart (DEFINITELY NOT THE FRESH PASTRY ADVERTISED), missing pieces of breakfast and the slowest service I've ever encountered. I've had better COMPLIMENTARY breakfasts at a Motel 6 so I wasn't thrilled about spending $50 dollars on something we tossed out. read more

Booked this place because the group I went with had booked this place and we wanted to be near one another. I LOVED IT! One person at the front desk was super sweet wish I had caught their name. But the rooms we had were very nice and both had some great views. Very easy to get to and walk to places like powells book store and Buffalo exchange. Parking was a little sketchy because it wasn't covered but very accessible. They also had happy hour and offered you some wine/champagne and had cheese and crackers. I was able to go one time and it was very nice and relaxing. Definitely has an old school ambiance to it. I would stay here again. read more

I want to love this hotel so badly. It's cool, interesting, historic, and has so much potential charm. Plus, we checked in yesterday on my birthday, hoping for a fun four-day getaway. Unfortunately, the damage is already done. After checking into our double queen room, we went out to celebrate my birthday at dinner. When we came back and crawled into bed, we noticed a terrible smell. It turns out the mattress was completely saturated with urine. It was absolutely disgusting, especially after we had already laid in it before fully realizing what the odor was. To their credit, the hotel staff are very nice and polite. They immediately moved us into a king room for the night, but because of availability, we have to pack up and move into a third room later today. While I appreciate how courteous the staff has been in handling the situation, the gross factor is just too high to ignore. Getting into a urine-soaked bed completely ruined the start of my birthday trip, and having to shuffle between three different rooms in less than 48 hours is exhausting. The character of the building and the kindness of the staff can't quite make up for a completely ruined first impression. I literally want to throw up. read more

My husband and I stayed here for a night recently with our dog for a little not-too-far-cation. The staff here is amazingly friendly and helpful. We arrived just in time for the complimentary wine & cheese hour, which was a nice surprise. The little sitting area in the lobby was perfect for relaxing with our pup. There are also some snacks and items you might have forgotten for sale at the front desk. There is underground parking that is easy to access from the lobby. We didn't get the pet welcome kit described on the website, but I forgot to ask about it, so no big deal. The location was nice. We did see some people while walking the area around the hotel who were obviously affected by addiction. I probably would have felt unsafe if I was walking alone. We walked to Powell's, our favorite bookstore in the world, and easily picked up a takeout dinner which we enjoyed in the room. Our room had a little kitchenette, which was fully stocked, and the king bed was so comfortable! Our window faced a brick wall, so no view, but it was nice and quiet. I detracted a star for a few little things: There is technically a fitness room, but it's kind of a sad basement room with old machines situation, so, if the fitness room is important to you, keep looking. Second, Mr. Spencer, please be more generous with the towels. Yes, two people can survive with just two towels but having one backup would be nice! The shower control was weird - basically, there was just one control for both temperature and pressure. if you want full pressure, you also have to have full heat, or, if you want to cool it off a bit, you're getting less pressure. I settled for a comfortable temperature and less pressure. I need a cool room when I sleep but either the AC in our room didn't work or I couldn't figure it out, but the room was warm. I called the front desk and the awesome staff brought a fan to the room to keep me cool and saved the day! Last note, if you have your heart set on the coffee shop or cafe, it's not open on Mondays or Tuesdays. That's ok, there are plenty of other great places in the area! read more

We got a last-minute deal through a third party to stay one night during the holidays so we could visit some friends. It worked out great. We requested a King bed and they were able to accommodate us so the three of us (including my six-year-old) were able to snuggly fit in one bed. We were centrally located, just two blocks from Powell's. The best was that parking was only $28 a night so we were able to stash the car in an underground lot and it didn't cost half as much as the room. They had a small but quaint lobby and the whole place had a classy vibe. They had complementary coffee and tea (but only had one black and one green tea since the camomile was out) all day and a free wine (with some crackers and cheese cubes) from 5:00-6:00 in the evening. Breakfast could be purchased at reasonable prices in the morning and we enjoyed some breakfast sandwiches that they heated up in the toaster oven to order. I noticed a few employees also getting breakfast so I knew it must be good. We'll have to check them out in the summer when we can walk around downtown and explore more. The bathroom didn't have a fan which left the entire room smelling musty and like Mildew.. Our white comforter had a giant yellow stain on it.. You have to pay $32 dollars to use their parking garage. The room was spacious though. We had two queen beds, a cute little kitchen with cooking stuff. We had 2 tvs which was nice! One in the main room for the two beds and then around the corner another TV with the pull out couch.. cute little vanity to do your make up at. I feel like their parking should be cheaper. read more

We booked the Mark Spencer through AirBnb and we had a lovely experience. For the 2 of us, the hotel had plenty of space in the room. Our bed was a double, but it didn't bother either of us. The front desk service was top notch! They were incredibly helpful with our questions and one of the gentleman even walked us to the light rail so that we could get to our concert at Moda Center without having to pay a large Uber fee (it was $5.60 for an all day pass for Portland's light rail). Service like that is above and beyond my expectations! Each person we encountered was so friendly. We didn't try any of the food or beverages in the cafe, but there were nice options and they offer wine tasting every day. There is also parking in their own garage for $32/night. We felt safe and secure - we highly recommend this hotel and would 100% book again if we come back to Portland! read more

Some friends of ours recommended The Mark Spencer as a great place to stay, clean and friendly with an awesome location. We were so pleased to find that everything we expected was true. The location was central to all that we wanted to see and experience in Portland, from Powell's to cafes and donut shops, Chinatown to the Waterfront, The Saturday Market to the Art Museum. The room was clean and the mini kitchen made it convenient for making and sharing breakfast and late-night dinners/snacks while we were visiting the city. Staff was efficient, friendly and quick to respond to requests and questions (the need for bedding for the pull-out couch, extra towels). Parking is available onsite, in a garage that has keyed access with in-out priviledges. There is a $25 per night fee for use of the garage, but made it easy and convenient for loading/unloading bags and making quick trips throughout town. read more

The managers came after we checked out our room and asked right away if we had any issues during our stay. I mean, it was our fault we left the window open and told them that was the only thing. We didn't really complained about anything else, yet he still took initiative to handle the situation. Ever since Covid hit. I have been looking for accommodations that give me a little more space for times when I might feel more comfortable getting takeout. I knew that would be especially true after an over 10-hour drive from the Bay Area when we just enjoyed our takeout Nong Khao Man Gai in PJ's while watching Coco on the big screen TV. Trying to find that while being centrally located ended up being a bigger challenge than expected as I noticed so many of the rooms available in most of the hotels, I was interested in were really small. Mark Spencer ended up meeting my requirements perfectly, offering a range of rooms from the smaller standard to larger suites to choose from. For only a $40 per night difference, I went for the executive king suite which has a private bedroom plus a living room with a fully equipped kitchen offering dishes, a couple of pots, microwave, and a small stovetop. While we didn't actually cook, I did boil some hot water often for tea and took advantage of those real dishes and real utensils and replated our takeout or leftovers. It probably saved us close to the $40 per night not wasting our leftovers while reducing food waste. I loved that they offer a discount on the parking fee for hybrids. My only complaint was the spaces in the parking garage underneath the hotel were quite small so may be a challenge maneuvering if it is full and we did get blocked with an unattended construction truck at the garage exit. Luckily, we were not in a hurry. Because of Covid, they have discontinued their continental breakfast and afternoon tea and cookies but with so many great options around, it is not a huge inconvenience. They are centrally located just a block away from Powell's City of Books and another block from there to Screen Door's new Pearl District location and so many wonderful restaurants and even a Whole Foods to pick up local Stumptown coffee, chocolates, and jams to bring home. I would definitely choose Mark Spencer again the next time I find myself in Portland. read more

They offer wine tasting with live music, which was really fun and engaging, and they even brought a soda for the kiddo while we enjoyed our adult beverages. Rooftop area is lovely! I would definitely recommend this hotel for anyone wanting to stay in NW Portland. Easy to get to, secure parking, lots of options of things to do within walking distance, and very easy to grab a ride share if you need to get to other parts of the city without having to drive yourself. It is clean, has comfortable beds and a nice vibe. It looks like an old warehouse or such that was smartly converted to a hotel and they've done a great job modernizing the place. It kind of reminds me of The Palmer House in Chicago only better with larger rooms. Also, it is within a few minutes walking distance to Powell's City of Books - a must visit. My family and I stayed here for trip to Portland. It's conveniently located near Whole Foods for groceries, Powell's books, and lots of coffee shops and restaurants in the Pearl District. When we arrived, we were greeted by the doorman/security who was helpful our entire stay. Checking in was a breeze. We were able to a find wheelchair accessible parking spot in their underground parking lot. We received a second key so that we could scan ourselves in to the other front door to reach the accessible entrance during our stay. Shortly upon arrival to our room, someone came by to deliver another bag of towels and linens for the sofa bed. The room itself was clean spacious for our family of 5. I loved the decor, beds were comfortable and there was a fully stocked kitchenette, although there was not really an area for us to eat, so that was kind of hard. The gym was closed and breakfast was not being offered due to covid. My favorite part of the hotel was the atrium in the basement level. It's so calming with string lights overhead and plants all around. The basement level is also where the laundry, ice machine, hotel offices, and meeting rooms are located. The only downside of staying here is that downtown Portland didn't feel that safe at the time of our visit. On our first day in Portland, we decided to walk around downtown after dinner. Homeless tents were all over the sidewalks and our wheelchair bound son was unable to navigate many of the sidewalks. My other son was also barked at by a homeless man which scared him. The kids refused to walk around downtown after that day, and we ended up taking refuge in the safety of the Mark Spencer whenever we returned from our day out. read more

The mattress was softer than I prefer but the support was decent. Linens were especially luxe & fresh, topped with a cozy duvet. A comfortable setup guaranteed to deliver quality sleep! The nightstands also provided good utility. BATH A medium size bathroom that pulls no punches on tiling: a glossy marble flooring with a green mosaic shower. You don't see this everyday in the more accessible hotel spaces where grout & tiling receive 2nd-class treatment. The colors & finish felt very regal in this one. Beekman bath products were pre-stocked in the shower & the waters pressure was strong throughout. Towels were sufficiently hefty & their bathrobes have an amazing texture. Cons: smaller shower; limited counter space; bath products weren't fully stocked TV & ENTERTAINMENT Big (50") wall mounted Samsung FHD TV. No mobility from this mount, so best of luck connecting an hdmi device... The channel situation is also chaotic, but there's a cheat sheet available in-room to make sense of it all. We chose the Mark Spencer hotel specifically for its downtown location in Portland and the huge hospitality suite with a large table and sitting area, allowing us to spread out and socially distance ourselves to remain safe - despite being vaccinated - during the pandemic as we ordered and brought food in. The accommodations in the three rooms we reserved - the hospitality suite and the two master suites - were wonderful. The master suites were recently renovated and spacious. They had a separate bedroom and a nice sitting area with a well-equipped kitchenette. The hospitality suite had a separate bedroom, one and a half baths, and a huge living/sitting area with a full kitchen decked out with a stove, microwave, refrigerator, and dishwasher. While we certainly weren't cooking, it was great to have the ability to store leftovers and reheat food after it was out in the chilly weather. We appreciated the General Manager's flexibility and graciousness with us as we celebrated our birthdays. The complimentary fine chocolates, sugar cookies, birthday card, and bottles of blueberry champagne were such nice touches! The hotel is in a great spot, just around the corner from Powell's and close to a lot of restaurants with diverse cuisine and several of the food cart pods. I would definitely stay here again. The rates for the master suites were very reasonable and while quite pricey, the hospitality suite met our needs and was worth the value for us during the COVID-19 pandemic. read more

The Gist: A boutique hotel in the Pearl District of downtown Portland, ideal for shopping and dinning. With different types of rooms and suites they offer, they can accommodate the needs of different types of guests. The best part of this hotel is its location, perfect for tourists. Location (5+ Stars) There are many restaurants and shops nearby. + Powell's Books only two blocks away. + Target with a CVS pharmacy only a few blocks away + Stumptown Coffee inside Ace Hotel right across the street. Currently (during the COVID pandemic), takeout only: the takeout window is on Stark St. Executive Suite (4 Stars) My son and I stayed in an executive suite with two queen beds. The suite (Rm318) was spacious, but it looked a bit more dated than it was shown on the hotel webpage. It did not look rundown, though. I think they need to update the chairs and the carpet. Overall, the room was kept up well and clean. + Bedroom: The queen beds were comfortable. The blackout curtain was nice. + Living room: there's a sofa, a table, a TV, and a desk. + Kitchen: there's a small fridge, a microwave, an electric stove, utensils, a coffee maker, etc. It's well stocked with plates, pots and pans, utensils, etc. Parking (4 Stars) They offer overnight self parking (with in and out privilege) for $25, which is about a half of what other hotels nearby ask for. I had to park on a small parking lot right across the street as the garage was full. There's no fence, no cameras, nothing! Other reviewers complained how small their garage is. I guess we get what we pay for whether it's the garage or the parking lot. It was advertised with a 21% discount on hotels.com. The executive suite was $133.51+tax, which was not too much more expensive than a regular room with two beds. I used an additional 10% discount from Target RedCard. So, I paid $138.45 all inclusive. Bottomline What I paid is not bad for a hotel suite in downtown Portland, but I still feel that I missed out a lot for not being able to have breakfast and the wine reception. In the end, the great location made up for everything that was not perfect.
