Stopped in for lunch on a beautiful October day and sat outside enjoying the weather at this small lunch spot right on the corner of the main drag. The menu features a nice variety of sandwiches and salads. Looking for something lighter with a local twist I opted for the crab cake salad. I was a little disappointed in the presentation. This salad consisted of some chopped iceberg lettuce, 3 slices of bland hot-house tomatoes. A handful of red onion circles, a bit of red cabbage and topping things off a large meaty crab cake. The mango citrus dressing was a simple vinaigrette. The crab cake was good but the overall salad was just average. I topped my meal off with a scoop of homemade ice cream (good) loaded with mini M&Ms. Service was prompt and friendly and there were several locals dining here but it wasn't anything special. read more

Service issues- waiting 22 minutes to be acknowledged is not acceptable. There was 1 server and she had 1 table of folks when we arrived. We waited 22 minutes before she acknowledged or approached our table. It was on Wednesday morning-We had eaten there everyday that week, only breakfast place open for business, this was not normal. After finally coming to take our order the server became more pleasant when we were careful not to show displeasure for such treatment- just disappointed. My boyfriend & I put off coming to this place for a bit after it opened. It hadn't had been open for very long and we were hearing from some other guests that this place wasn't worth it and that service was terrible. Well, we finally said what the heck and decided to have brunch there today. Well, glad we did because the experience was nothing but pleasant. There was mo wait, so we sat down almost immediately. I ordered the corned beef with eggs and my boyfriend ordered the croissant with the Canadian bacon & eggs. The food came out very quickly and our server was super sweet & friendly. Just as we were paying our bill and leaving they started playing live music which started with the song "Groovin on a Sunday afternoon" by the Rascals. My husband and I stopped in there for lunch. We expected to wait 5-25 min. Per the hostess. No big deal. There were open tables, though. The problem was that we waited another 15 min. to be asked for our drink order, then another 25 minutes to get our drinks. When the food finally came, my husband's burger was well done and dried out. He ordered it medium. My cheese steak barely had any steak on it. We decided to send his back and split my bread and sauce sandwich. We have been to this location many times when it was the Loose Caboose. I'm guessing that since the name change, the ownership did too. Unfortunately the quality has gone down. The people in my party had grouper fingers (small with unremarkable breading), a chicken Caesar wrap which was lettuce and chicken with no dressing or other flavoring, tomato Brie wrap (not very good, according to my daughter) and wings and a Cuban wrap, which were just OK. It took 20 minutes from the time we sat down until the waitress took our order and more than 40 minutes after that for the food to arrive. The bill was around $130. I've enjoyed every trip to Loose Caboose! On the last visit, one of the waitresses put the tag down in my shirt as she walked by and it was so cute - like my mom would do for me! The food is amazing! The servers are friendly! It has a fun kind of island feel with neat train theming! It's casual without feeling dirty. A must visit when we're on the island!! Not too many choices on Gasparilla Island in the off-season, but this is a good one! They have ample outdoor seating, which was great for us since we traveled over from Miami for the day with our two dogs in tow. And, they're dog friendly! Our server brought out fresh bowls of water and dog biscuits! Fortunately, our appetizers were a bit better suited for humans... conch fritters. They are obviously used to tourists here, and not native Floridians. They had a real marketing game going with the "gulf shrimp, local grouper, and key west conch." Of course, harvesting conch in the keys is long since illegal, even for commercial purposes, since they were driven to virtual extinction in the 80's. So, despite their insistence that the conch is from key west, it's most likely from an importer in key west that obtains it from the Turks & Caicos or elsewhere. This doesn't change the fact that they were good conch fritters! It did make me wonder about the origin of the grouper we had on our lunch platter, but I know my fish, and it was definitely grouper, and quite good. This was an excellent lunch stop while in the area to see the two nearby lighthouses. I imagine it's quite crowded during tourist season! read more

The food is okay and the service is average at best. The lettuce in my husband's wrap was on the verge of bad and didn't taste fresh. The grouper fingers were tasty but extremely greasy- I actually had to pat them down with a napkin. For a laid back beach town restaurant, I found this place to also be a little overpriced. The floor needed to swept and was atrocious to look at. The empty table behind us had dirty napkins all over the floor and the table next to us had had an even dirtier floor area. Situated on what used to be a train depot, the Loose Caboose has a fun history you can enjoy when visiting the establishment. Although the food was quite good, the customer service was slightly lacking. All the waiters were very friendly, but my party of six waited at least an hour to be greeted and served refreshments. Needless to say, the wait time for the food was much longer. Perhaps we went during a busy time, or we were not noticed due to the fact that patrons are asked to seat themselves. This review is for the creamery, not the restaurant. I'm not sure what was up with the normal creamery storefront, but it was closed all the days we were on the island, so we just ordered ice cream to-go from the restaurant waitress. This meant we couldn't see or sample the flavors, but just needed to order on intuition alone. The caramel was quite good, as was the Oreo. Overall nothing to write home about, but good ice cream at fair prices. read more

I had a nice lunch, sitting outside at the loose caboose on a hot early November day on Boca Grande. It was pretty quiet when I got there, biked over - by the way, excellent biking on the island! People started to mosey in around lunchtime, very casual people coming in and beachwear, from golf carts. There seem to be some pretty good things on the menu, I was feeling a little healthy since I biked over, had the grilled grouper salad. Pretty good! We were advised by an employee at one of the shops that the nearest public restroom was located in the same building as the "Loose Caboose". When we arrived we found the door locked. We asked a server if we could have the key to use the bathroom and she notified us that the restroom was only for paying customers. We said we would be willing to buy something, but then she made us wait to be seated, and wait for the key. We ordered iced coffees, which she accidentally spilled when setting down. Mistakes happen, but her response was "oh that's too bad, that was the last of the coffee."?! Have been going to the loose caboose with my daughter for over 10 years, we always order the same thing, Cobb salad with grilled shrimp and fried green tomatoes; it has changed a little through out the years but for the most part it's always tasty fresh and served with a smile.
