When I first went to Derek, I was very interested in getting my curly hair straightened and colored, and he did so wonderfully! Really took time to blow out all of my mixed girl curls and pump my thin hair with volume! Previously I was attending M Salon for my services, and Tiffany was great but after being situated with an assistant longer than the actual stylist; I was obliged to look elsewhere in c/o the $$$ I was paying. And upon looking at Derek's portfolio - I was instantly captivated by his visual flair for color and that was my main objective when I went to him. So, when I came back to him - Probably about a year later I had the same goal in mind: straight hair and blonde highlights, but he's an artist... And he will do his best to make sure that you have a vision of yourself that is completely unique to your own style. So, he suggested that perhaps I revert to my natural texture of curls in lieu of flat ironing my hair and damaging it with so much heat and you know, sometimes that's not an easy choice because you feel confident in looking a certain way that media suggests is pretty, but I trusted him and with that he really did help me embrace my natural beauty and with that I've been able to keep up my looks a lot longer because I am not really deviating away from what's been God given to me. Anyhow, enough about the philosophical nature of getting a new haircut, let's get to the actual physical quality of one. Derek works with perhaps two assistants when he's doing your color so you're getting a really in-depth job. Also, I remember having a great scalp massage during my shampoo. The color was not just a red, but it was deeply layered with purples in order for it to reflect differently in certain lights, which is great for different looks you might have in store. I told them it was no big deal for me to come back later and they asked if 230 would be okay. Me and my kids went to The Teahouse (you can see that review too) and had a nice time and then came back. The stylist who did my hair was a lovely person and she gave me exactly what I was looking for....she also gives the best head rubs while she washes your hair. She explained the conditioner she used was a good brand but was not the deep conditioner. Also explained that I just wanted ends trimmed. After switching beauticians due to my former beautician changing on me, I needed to find a new one…read moreand being a person with natural virgin hair, it isn't simple finding someone who will strictly work on my texture of hair since most black beauticians stick to permed hair. So, after calling a couple of salons in a short amount of time, thankfully, I found this one! Who knew, Smart Styles located in Walmart would be any good? I surely didn't. I walked in and beautician Angeleak immediately assisted me. She washed, blow-dried, and styled my hair without being unprofessional. She wasn't eating while doing my hair or gossiping about others, she was just professional. She was very kind and patient with me. Also, she did my hair perfectly: she styled it so my curls would be full of volume, shining, not greasy looking, and whatever shampoo she used it got rid of my dandruff and my itchy scalp issues. I've been wearing my hairstyle for 2 months without it falling. It is really holding it up and I'm so excited I have found a great beautician. If in doubt, call Smart Styles and you won't be sorry. I was NOT disappointed. Monica is an amazing stylist. It's not easy for me to use those words, I don't meet many of her caliber so I was so happy to have been referred to her. She uses a product line that I wasn't familiar with, L'Oreal Professional (not to be confused with L'Oreal Paris AT ALL) so I was also hesitant about this. Not to worry, it was SO good for my crazy hair! I also did a conditioning treatment from the same brand and it made my hair just so soft. I'm super happy I did that. I highly recommend doing it!
