He was a pleasure to work with over email and had flexibility on the menu, coming up with a few solid choices for our vegetarian guests and agreeing to work with the exact budget I specified. He was in contact with the venue and answered all of his own questions without involving me, which I really appreciated. The day of, he showed up early and well-prepared, which allowed me to focus on the last-minute details. The servers on his team were all very professional and did a great job. Chef Joseph was calm under pressure and had very good suggestions about the timing of service and our plans for cutting the cake. (One of his servers also came through with a wine key, which our bartenders forgot to bring!) Most important, the food was delicious and lived up to the reviews. Our guests all raved about the quality and presentation, particularly the fried chicken sliders that give Fuku+ a run for their money and the delicious salmon tartare served on wontons. Everyone was very impressed that such delicious (and hot) food could be served in an art gallery with no kitchen, and the servers did a great job of keeping the food flowing. Reservations are insanely hard to come by their offered two weeks in advance for a period of two weeks and you better be online second they come open and even then you might not get a seat. But if you do get a Seat pay the extra money to sit the front row it is so worth it. This is a chopped/iron chef competition dinner where there are two chefs that are given mystery ingredients an hour and a half before the guests arrive. They are allowed one sous shop to assist them and they came up with a plan for appetizer, which is the first time event and a main course which is the second time event and a dessert which is the third time event. It's a flat fee reservation with tip included, except for the drink which you order off the menu and they have very reasonable prices and then you're expected to tip on that. Weeknight reservations are cheaper than weekend. The location is right next to the subway exit so if you're coming from Manhattan, it's an easy ride on the subway. There is a master of ceremonies host who tells you all the rules and conducts the voting and the penalties for overtime spent for ingredients lacking in the chef's dinner. The customers are the ones that award points. On my most recent minute visit a couple days ago I found that one chef had the most superb salmon appetizer that I have ever had. It was pretty much perfect and I would order it at any restaurant that I went to. However, he totally was a failure when it came to desserts and unfortunately, he lost the competition. It was kind of interesting as the males overly selected. The male chefs recipes has been superior and didn't really concentrate on his totally terrible dessert while the female females voted for the female chef. In 2022, I hired Great Performances to help celebrate the launch of my book at the iconic Strand Bookstore in NYC. I flew in friends and family for what was meant to be a milestone moment. A day before the event, I contracted COVID and, heartbreakingly, had to cancel. The contract clearly stated that in cases of force majeure--like illness--neither party would be at fault. I no longer lived in NYC, so rescheduling wasn't viable. I reached out, respectfully and in good faith, to discuss paying a portion of the nearly $6,000 charge. Instead of any further acknowledgment, I was ghosted. They stopped answering my emails entirely. No returned calls, no response--just silence. I then worked through American Express, who initially agreed I shouldn't be liable. But after years of back and forth, I was told the full charge would stand. Throughout this time, I have yet to speak with a single human being from this company. This isn't just poor customer service. It's a failure of integrity. They collected thousands of dollars for an event that never happened, provided no flexibility, no dialogue, no professionalism. I waited to write this review in hopes of resolution. That hope is gone. So is my money. If you care about decency, transparency, or the simple act of being treated like a human being--look elsewhere.
