Just had my haircut with Mami. She was really nice. I recommend her to everyone. Unfortunately she can't dye my hair when I come back. I'm not sure why. She should be promoted to being able to dye hair! I usually go to Tokuyama but I like this place better. It's also conveniently located in downtown Manhattan next to a lot of trains. read more

One of the best haircuts and cut experiences I've ever had. I'm often reluctant to try new stylists/barbers because I've gotten some bad haircuts no matter how much I pay or where I go. I have hair with different textures (curly in the front/top and wavy/straight on the sides back but lots of different cowlicks around). But I was visiting NYC from the Bay Area and my last haircut (done elsewhere, in SF) was pretty mediocre and wasn't fixing itself as it grew out. For a men's cut at Kida you can opt for the barber side or the salon side, both at $40. I'm guessing the barber side is if you want to spend less time on the chair (the site lists 25 min) and want something short and straight-forward. I opted for the salon side (which lists an hour for a men's cut) in hopes of a more detail oriented approach. Detail oriented was what I got, in spades! I was able to schedule with Taka the same day. He understood exactly what I didn't like about my last cut and my hair's current state. He is relaxed and made light conversation, but clearly focused on giving his best work. He took his time and seemed to attend to every hair on my head, but efficiently and with great competence. I got my hair cut dry after Taka and I agreed it would work best for my hair, but I decided to pay $10 for a shampoo after the cut. Well worth it. The young woman (Yuki? Forget her name maybe) who washed my hair put a similarly detailed-yet-relaxed approached, thoroughly massaging my scalp, with perfect gentleness. Afterwards, I was back in Taka's care, and got at great neck and shoulder massage. Then he dried and styled my hair. $40 felt like not only a bargain but like too little, so I left a generous tip. read more

Love Love Love. I have been a long time client of Megumi and have followed her everywhere. I was so happy when her and her husband decided to take the jump and open their own salon. It is beautiful! A converted pizza place with all the original brick made into a relaxing get away. Everything is wonderful. The products are all eco-friendly. Shampoo smells amazing, the hair dye is ammonium free, they try and limit their use of paper... There is fresh coffee and tea. The hair wash/shampoo was the best I have ever had. I was in a super cranky mood before going last night and walked out happy and rejuvenated. I cannot wait to go back again. It is comfortable and you feel like you are family when you are there. My favorite salon place! I have frizzy and curly hair and they know how to treat it. I wanted a short cut a particular way but yuki gave great recommendations and suggestions based on my hair and steered me away from disaster (she said my hair is heavier and that cut wouldn't look like the picture). The entire staff is welcoming and would probably serve me all the tea possible in NYC. I get my hair styled by Yuki, who is super meticulous and I haven't left any complaints at all. Just to be clear, this is the first and likely the only Yelp review I will ever write. Kida is the best place, of any kind, I have found over the 4 years I have lived in New York. I followed Shin here from Neighborhood Cut & Shave (a decent barber shop, in its own right) and have been amazed at the quality of the staff and the community he and his wife have built in such a short time. I have recommended Kida to all of my friends over the past year and literally every single one of them who has come to Kida has converted immediately and continue to have their hair cut here. I legitimately have friends who have moved away from New York and still come into the city every 6 weeks or so to get their hair cut at Kida. If you visited Kida and had any issues whatsoever, you either failed to speak up adequately or are a miserable person. From atmosphere to quality to pricing, Kida is as good as it gets. read more

Fantastic haircuts here! I got my hair recently cut by Shin and he did a great job. He worked quickly yet was very meticulous. I ended up getting the best haircut that I have ever gotten and I've been to other 4.5 / 5 Yelp Star rated barber shops in NYC and many in Philly. I was very impressed that he offered me opinions on a different way that I could style my hair, as well as pointed out his nuanced methods of cutting my hair to optimize its look. Though I was (selfishly) hesitant to post this positive review (because I wanted to keep Kida's masterful hair cutting skills all to myself) I thought the better of it and wanted to inform the Yelp community of the awesomeness that awaits you at Kida. read more

Megumi and Shin have opened up the coolest salon and barbershop I've ever been to - you walk into a white washed, downtown yet airy space filled with plants and wood decor. Jazz and chill tunes permeate the air, custom and vintage barbershop chairs hang out in the space in the back and the vibe feels calm but professional. They have a way of making you feel like you're the only customer they have all day. So much attention and care (hair wash & massage, and cut) will take over 1.5 hours. I had been contemplating getting my hair cut short (short bob or pixie cut) and being the scaredy-cat that I am when it comes to hair, did my research and arrived at Kida. I emerged from my hour appointment lighter-headed and loving my new cut, thanks to the expert hands of Kumi and her recommendations and reassurances throughout. Shin fantastic. He is a true stylist and artist in regard to hair (and even make up). He used to be a stylist for the likes of Thom Browne and Simon Spurr. His attention to detail is extraordinary. I'm a beard guy and he took more care in trimming and layering my beard than anyone else I've ever worked with. My husband got his hair cut with MJ and loved him too. It's tough to find a barber shop in NYC that can deliver on all aspects of a good experience but Kida handles all of these with ease. Shin has done a tremendous job creating a relaxed, cool space - music is always on point, the vibe is cool, and Shin is, without a doubt, one of the nicest people I have ever met. When I first started going to Kida, specifically Shin, he took a good amount of time to understand the style I was looking for. He took the full half-hour to cut my hair all while incorporating any on-the-fly feedback I had for him (always good to have a strong rapport with your barber!) When I wanted a change I gave full autonomy to Shin and allowed him to do whatever he thought would look the best for me. As expected, I came away with a new haircut that I still go for to this day. Its been 2+ years since I started going to Kida and Shin, and I can't say enough about this place. I recommend to this place to anyone looking for a haircut and pretty much anyone who's willing to listen to me talk about Shin. KIDA is awesome. I have fine, but abundant, very straight hair and was pining for a stylist who'd give me an overall trim and simultaneously thin it out without hacking it all to bits. Taka did a fantastic job. My hair feels a million times healthier. It was a bit more than I planned on spending, but not bad compared to what I could've spent elsewhere for a similar cut, so I walked out feeling good about it. Also on my way out as I was saying bye, I overheard the guy getting his hair done after me say, "Her hair looks so good!" I think that's a win. read more

Would not recommend. First time (was going to be) and they cancelled my appointment with the owner at the last minute citing an emergency. I understand these things happen but asked if anybody else could take me in today and the lady on the phone was rude and tried to book me an appointment for next week. I've gotten my haircut at Kida twice so far (once by Shin and once by Fausto). Both cuts were amazing. Shin and Fausto work very carefully and listen to what you say. The cut finishes with a hot towel neck massage. Conversation was never awkward - they're both very friendly! The shop itself is clean and good looking. Definitely returning! read more

After a lot of agonizing and internal conflict, I chose to get a badly-needed hair cut from Kida. The store has a nice, airy atmosphere with lots of natural sunlight and wood, and I was offered a glass of water before my cut. I was really nervous beforehand (long story short - haircuts give me panic attacks) and Yuki's excellent shampoo and massage calmed me down a LOT. Kumi was my stylist and we spend about 10 minutes talking about what to do with my hair - I told her I didn't know what I wanted except not too short and something super low maintenance, and she asked me a bunch of questions about how I usually style my hair, what hair products I use, and exactly what length I would be comfortable with. Kumi then proceeded to work her magic - I'm amazed she was able to transform my hairstyle with such little direction. The price for the shampoo, massage, haircut, and blowdry came out to about $80 (without tip) and it was worth every single cent. Not only did I love my own haircut, I noticed all of the other customers walking out with super stylish hairstyles too - even though I'm gonna stick with Kumi in the future, I'd be in good hands with any of the other stylists here. read more
