This store has all kinds of unique and fun gift items: T-shirts (cat, movies, music, cartoons, etc.) and other vintage clothes, jewelry, purses, books, toys, collectibles, cards, kitchen and tea towels, and socks, among others. The woman who works there, who I think is also the owner, is very friendly, enthusiastic, and helpful. I am knocking a couple of stars off though because I found the clothing merchandise to be expensive for the quality of a few of the vintage items. One of the shirts I bought I found had a hole in the sleeve when I got home to wrap it, and I would have preferred to have known it had a hole before I'd bought it at the price I did, even marked down. One shirt was stained in back, which she nicely let me exchange later. Another had a fabric that split apart when I washed it in gentle cycle. It said hand wash, but gentle cycle is usually fine for those. I recommend looking closely at all vintage clothing you buy there as it's also not supposed to be returnable. There is a good selection of T-shirts, but make sure you know what you're getting before you leave. read more

The charming lady running the store was of great assistance and I got lots of neat Christmas gifts! You gotta know what you are getting yourself into with this store. It's a smorgasbord of random unique gifts. There is more than kid stuff and more than cat stuff...but I would say there is definitely more cat stuff than dog stuff by like 2:1. The woman that owns the store is usually there most of the time. She seems pretty into animal rescue so if that's an interest of yours as well, you'll be in good company. She usually has one of her dogs in the store with her. There is a mixture of new and vintage items here. You'll have to assess the condition of the item to tell which is which. The pricing for a lot of these items are more expensive than you would find online, but you won't be able to replicate the experience or the variety. read more

Kids-and-cats isn't just for kids, it's for all of us adults that were once and still are kids. This is such a neat store tucked away in the corner of the shopping center. We only accidentally discovered it because we were eating next door. It's like a Toy Joy for animals (mainly cats and dogs) but there is tons of "Austin weird" stuff here. Like someone else said, this is a great white elephant kind of place. We will definitely be back when we can afford the time to really look through the store. She is completely thrilled about all the amazing collectibles, jewelry, toys and trinkets. Listen up. Coleen could sell the pants off the President. So go with the idea that you will buy something. I purchased a fierce looking carved owl under her influence for The Kid. During the holidays I drug The Kid in so he could see first hand what I've been talking about. He browsed through the one million items and looked several times at the Star Wars action figures and the owls. He's an owl guy. Go figure. I think it was too soon after he received a wad of money from Santa so he did not make a purchase but promised to return with friends. The Kid: So she is how old? Me: Who??? Finally wandered into Kids-N-Cats this afternoon after years of walking by on my way to the HEB. What an amazingly eclectic and mind-blowing selection of stuff in here. I asked the woman behind the counter if it was her store and she deadpanned, "No, it's the cat's." The woman is Lani, the kitty is Angel, and the feeling is all Austin. The aisles are overhung with so many games, toys, blouses, skirts, candles, posters, lamps, stuffed animals, etc etc etc. The selection is all over the map and that's what makes the vibe so special. This is a massive collection of stuff that one individual likes and wants to share. Apparently she has some loyal customers who appreciate her individuality; she's been there 17 years! That's pretty impressive. This would be a great place to take the kiddos. What a kaleidoscopic delight of kid-friendly items; forget ToysRMoney, bring the little ones here first. Angel is also very friendly and rather gorgeous. One could spend hours in here just perusing and enjoying; there's character to spare and that's always refreshing. If you're ever around Koenig and Burnet drop in for a moment and give Angel a little scratch behind the ears. He's a cool cat with a cool owner and they run a very cool little emporium that's overflowing with personality and wildly diverse items both attractive and useful. read more

What. The. Hell. How did I not know this place existed? I've driven by but finally I stopped in after having a nice little express pedi next door. What greeted me was a bargain and treasure hunters paradise. There's stuff EVERYWHERE. If you are a fan of digging you'll find a bunch of awesomeness. Here is a true toy store. Okay, so it's mainly stuffed animals and cat keepsakes with other toys thrown in, but it's fun. It's cluttered, cramped, overwhelming and unassuming. This little shop is located, randomly enough, in a hard-to-see corner of the strip mall that sits on the corner of Burnet Road and Koenig. Much overshadowed by the neighborhood HEB, I only spotted the place on a crowded Sunday when I was forced to park about a mile away from the grocery. (HEBs are infamous for their Sunday patronage.) It's not an incredibly convenient location for most Austin dwellers, but if you're in the area, this crazy toy heaven and gift bazaar is quite amusing. The cat lover on your list would LOVE you for shopping here. There's also plenty of gift ideas for kids of all ages. Huge, random selection of Ty beanies and other stuffed animals. Comic book characters, modern toys, and playthings from the past. Speaking of the past, what Ms. Steingraph (the owner) doesn't realize (or maybe she does, but chooses to not market it) is the vast collection of near-vintage toys she has in her store. A decade or so longer and her stock will be a vast storehouse of expensive and rare collectibles. Raggedy Ann and Andy dolls, Paddington bears, old games and dolls. There were at least 10 items on her shelves that I distinctly remembered from my childhood. And that was almost 25 years ago. So, in summary, if you're a cat lover, a vintage toy collector, or a frantic parent with the sand falling fast on the birthday/Hanukkah/Christmas hourglass, stop by Kids N Cats for a quick-fix. I came here today for the first time ever looking for Silly Bandz for my son's upcoming birthday party. When I asked the owner (?), who was sat behind the sales counter at the back of the store, jawing away with her friend/customer, she said, very snottily, "no, we haven't decided to carry those yet, but we do have a new shipment of Webkinz hamsters." (Uh, I asked for Silly Bandz, not a Zhu Zhu Pet. I'm not sure how "Silly Bandz" translates into "toy hamster.") Anyhoo, after shutting me down, she turned to her friend and said, "we just don't *do* the fad stuff. blah blah blah snobcakes." You've probably walked by this store a thousand times on your way into the HEB on Burnet/Koenig and you've thought What the Hell many times but you've never gone in. Are you afraid someone might see you? Post pictures on the Internet? That would be funny. This place is kind of weird. Maybe has a bit of an identity crisis...what is it? The go to place for the mystical figures, scented patchouli oils and candles or is it the place you go to when you need that little silver trinket or chain to go around your neck to complete the perfect outfit? Maybe you go to K&C when you need some toys or books for your little one. For me, I go to the K&C for one thing and one thing only. Beastie Bands. The beastie band is the PERFECT collar for your finicky feline. It's the only collar my cat will wear and not get her sweet little paw stuck in trying to get it off. It's made of soft nylon I think...I don't really know what it is and couldn't care less because it works so darn well. It has a Velcro closure and you can cut the collar to fit your cat's neck. It also has a little hole for the what to do if you find my cat tags to hang from. They cost about $5 a pop I think...I stock up every time I go in buying several at a time since my cat wears them out after a few months wear. Lord knows I don't want someone taking pictures of me going in to the K&C and posting them on the Internet. read more

This little shop is at good at is gets. They have tons of stuff! Stuff from everyone's childhood and more stuff you have never seen. Toys, cards, books, action figures, games, jewelry etc. I popped in today with my 5 year old, we could have hung out for hours looking at everything. Every week, I grocery shop at the HEB in this shopping center. For some reason, the name of this store has always drawn my attention. It became a bit of a running joke with my boyfriend when we shop: "I need to pick up some items at Kids-N-Cats today." "Hey, let's check out Kids-N-Cats!" Today we finally did, and we were not disappointed. There is a plethora of cat items - stuffed animal cats, cat books, and all manner of trinkets for cat-lovers. And no kid would be disappointed while surveying the piles of toys in this store. Everything from used books at reasonable prices to stylish jewelery to row upon row of tiny ceramic animal figurines (the same stuff Austin's snobbier vintage stores are selling for 5x the price) is crammed into a small space. Normally I wouldn't dream of going into a store called Kids-N-Cats. The name makes it sound like this is THE place if you need to pick up a calendar featuring kittens wearing funny hats or a powder-blue "Bless This Mess" plaque for your gingham skirt-wearing country duck-themed kitchen. No thanks. In actuality, you probably can get those items at this store, but seriously, the place is so so much more. I reluctantly went in for the first time because I was desperately needing Glow-In-The-Dark stars for the walls of my kids' bedroom, which they had, and was quite pleasantly surprised at the huge eclectic mix of stuff crammed in every corner. Temporary tattoos? Check. Incense? Check. Vintage estate jewelry? Used paperbacks? Check. Tons of stuffed animals? Check. Funky toys? Check. Black river stones with "Dream" carved on them? Check. It's really a great place to explore and find things you never thought you needed. Recently they also started carrying used clothes - mostly funky tops and skirts - all in the $12-$16 range - not bad. The name of the store really does the place a disservice and discourages anyone who in any way, shape or form thinks of herself as even marginally hip or cool from ever going in. And that is a shame. This is a really eccentric store. Lots of cat stuff, random toys, and other goods cramped into a tiny space. But there's one reason I come here: $5 beastie bands! These are the best cat collars you can get, and she sells them less than Amazon.com. They are soft neoprene with velcro, and you can cut them down to size. They come in fun colors and patterns, and many even glow in the dark. (Useful when your cat is wandering around at night). read more

This shop is a haven for anyone who likes attentive, knowledgeable, service. There are treasures, trinkets, soft, ADORABLE plushies, and stuffed animals. Seriously folks, I actually gasped when I picked up a Kangaroo, with a baby in her pouch, sooo adorable. The owner is adept at accquiring charming, beautiful toys. She also always wants the treasures to find a good home and gets great joy out of satisfying someones need for a specialty, or retro item. She carries candles, soft stuffed animal and puppets, figurines, books, and cards. She has the BEST evar selection of children's books and toys, as well as dragons, fairies and mystical gem not to be found anywhere else. I would be remiss to not mention her jewelry selection. I stumbled upon this place yesterday, saw the word "cats" and knew I would not be living up to my crazy cat lady persona if I didn't stop in. Holy moly! I was not expecting what I found....this little store is packed to the gills with stuff. Fun stuff! Lots of CAT STUFF among a wide variety of other things. I think kids would get a real kick out of this store. It's the holy grail for stocking stuffer type gifts too. I plan to go back when I have a lot more time to look around. This place is obviously very popular with most. It has a massive inventory of stuff from a wide variety of merchandise categories. Clearly the owner has more money that she needs to buy such a plethora of products. Today was my first visit and will be my last. I'm an Austinite of 21 years and a real believer in supporting small local business owners. Here's the rub, when a small business charges seriously inflated prices for small insignificant plastic and rubber toys that you would get out of a quarter machine it's just silly and offensive. I bought roughly a dollars worth today and paid $8.62! I have a 26 year old (5 year old) step daughter with autism. If you know anything about autistic people it's fairly common for them to be obsessive about certain things (little bitty plastic toys). And they love to hoard them. We have bins in her room with hundreds of them which she spends hours going through. To each his own. I'm just saying.... read more

This place gets 5 stars from me with the addition of "customer service points". Last weekend I ventured in for the second time - the first time I wandered in from HEB I just did a quick run in and out, a tad terrified by the stuffed animals and figurines. This time, I noticed used books in the window, and needing to replenish my airport reading stash, I went it and gave it a closer look. Clearly one of those shops that was created as much for the pleasure of the owners as much as anything else - the dear gregarious ladies greeted me and talked to everyone else who came in like I was a long lost friend. I found tons of used paperbacks at $5 - some popular mysteries but mostly not-quite-chick-lit - the stuff that isn't "powder puff stiletto heels gotta find a date" kind of thing, but books written by grown folk women about women, families and communities going through changes and the occasional mystery. I bought 7. Then I saw the incense. I don't buy incense - you must have me confused with my sister who buys the heavily scented stuff. The incense here came in pretty pastel designed boxes with names like Sky Flowers, Dance with Clouds and Radiance. Yeah, I bought 'em - all 3 -what? what? Across from the checkout is a display of animal figurines, including a good selection of owls, which our late mother used to collect. I bought a tiny owl with a hole at the top of his head to hold the incense. And then near the corner of the lower labyrinth of the center of the store are all these kaleidoscopes - 3 sizes, in sparkly red, purple or gold or covered by muted old fashioned paper maps. Yeah, I bought a medium sized red one with a cylinder that goes through one end spinning bright imagination into shapes. What? What? And then when I went to check out and that's where they keep the vintage jewelry - and some jewelry that's not so vintage, because the pair I bought was a funky set made out of copper and lapis/white china. It was the earrings that prompted the service I appreciate. When I got home later that day, I had a message on the phone from a clearly disgruntled man from my bank saying that I should call Kids-n-Cats at their number because they still have my bankcard or something. I call, and the chatty lady explains that she had forgotten to put my funky earrings in my bag after she had wrapped them separately and thank goodness I had used a debit card so that she could call the bank and explain that they needed to notify the customer that merchandise she has paid for was still at the store. Bank said hell no we don't do that. Well, apparently after half an hour on the phone with the Kids-n-Cats lady they decided maybe this once they would. After I called the shop, she apologized and said she would hold the earrings for me no matter how long it takes for me to get back. And then I get an "unusual activity-card inactivated until we hear from you alert" on my Blackberry. So I called them back and explained what had happened and they said yes, we still had to do the alert to make sure you call us back get the message and we know the card is actually in your possession, and now that we know everything's fine, your card is reactivated. So I guess Bank of America gets points, too. SOOO - all that to say this a friendly spot where you will likely find something that will delight you or a friend who needs a giggle. I made out with a stack of books I would have been happy to pay more for, incense with soft, subtle scents that will burn in a tiny owl to honor our mom, a kaleidoscope with a dynamic liquid movement that makes it that much more mesmerizing, and some funky handmade earrings that look totally unique. I'll be back, and I'll bring my sister to see, too. read more

Lani, the very friendly lady who runs this independently owned ecclectic super fun shop is really sweet, and has just been through a colossal move from the space right next door to HEB, to a few doors down from that spot. This is a really cool, very Austin kind of local shop with tons of treasures of all kinds, and probably has something for everyone, for every budget. I had a really great experience here, and very nice conversation, as well. Walking in is like going on a treasure hunt, which is awesome to me. My son, who is five, and has rather unusual but all-encompassing taste, loved the place as well. I can't believe I have never been in there before, for Lani tells me she has been running it for 17 years now. This place is amazing! My 2.5 year old son's favorite Star Wars character is R2D2. So I thought I would get him an R2D2 action figure, like I used to play with as a kid. I looked at Target, nothing. Toys-R-Us, nope. Terra Toys? Nada. Toy Joy? Close, but no. Austin Books, on the chance that they might carry Star Wars figures? Negative. I even went to I Luv Video on Airport Blvd b/c they have action figures on display. No, and they aren't for sale, anyways. I randomly went to Kids-N-Cats, and low and behold. I love this place forever. My son went to sleep with R2D2 in his hand tonight! On top of that, the owner is super nice, and my son just LOVES the place. A yellow duck. The owner buried me in yellow ducks. Bathtub duckies, ducks that squeak, ducks that quack electronically, cute ducks holding flowers, a hand puppet duck, and a crazy haired Ty duck. Offbeat novelties, bizarre knickknacks, oddball curios, singular tchotchkes... *closes thesaurus*... this place has just about one of everything you'd want if you're trying to find a weird present that doesn't scream "I spent 5 minutes at Target". Chances areyou'll be the only person there when you walk in, so get ready for the super-nice lady tucked away behind rack upon rack of splendor to emerge from her sales sconce and give you some personal guidance in case you're overwhelmed by the sheer quantity of Stuff packing every single cubic centimeter of the store. I have been searching for some cute, vintage, non-mainstream sterling silver rings and I found exactly what I was looking for here! I used to shop at this store when it was in its' former, larger location. It's been years since I've been in, but after today's visit, I can honestly say I have no desire to go back. The store was cluttered in the larger location & now that they are in a smaller store, I'm surprised it isn't against fire code. The pathways are almost impassable. Their is a pungent odor in the store, a combo of must & cat urine. Some of the items are "gently used", while others are new, but the prices are high for both. I've never had an problems with the service. Mostly, if you need some junk, this is your place, but good luck finding it in the clutter. read more
