During one cut the stylist Tina complained and chastised me for almost the entire time her hair was knotty. Started off with telling me what kind of shampoo to use and ended with her trying to charge me $18. I made it clear my daughter was at camp for the week so it was going to be knotty. A $35 cut, wash and blow took 35 minutes. I was prepare to tip generously as I knew it was more work than usual. As parents we have so much to do but 20 minutes of being told on repeat that your kid's hair is knotty the only tip I have is shut the f up. My other daughter received a haircut from another stylist and it was on a complete diagonal. Going for a haircut and wash should be a somewhat relaxing experience with a fun outcome. My kids were quiet and excited at ages 8 and 10. I just wanted to get out of there because I felt uncomfortable and frustrated. If you want a stressful time caused by the poor services of the workers, then this is the place for you. I rather a stress free $100 haircut for my kids.

My 3 yr old got put out of Deja's chair all within the first 5-10 minutes of her appointment because she could not sit completely still. She came washed and blow-dried, ready for braids, but Deja did one braid and lost all patience for her. Our appointment started at 3:25PM we were out the door by 3:35. To make matters worse, my kid is special needs, and we chose Childish Mane after visiting their website, which claims to promote no discrimination and services for children of all abilities. Owner Anisha is even quoted in a Raleigh magazine saying how proud she is when styling children with autism and disabilities at her salon. Granted, I did not disclose this during our visit -- because it's our business, and I shouldn't have to if it's quoted as your mission?! That alone is what gave me comfort when booking! I truly thought we were walking into a safe, inviting, and understanding space -- one that wouldn't require me to explain or apologize for my daughter's behavior. Our appointment did not reflect that. :( From the start, it was very unwelcoming. Deja watched us get out of the car, walked up to the door, turned the lock, and walked away. I didn't know if she locked it or unlocked it, because she didn't speak or try to hold it open. To make matters even worse, both of my hands were full and I was holding a baby! As a mother and advocate, I'm not writing this to bash another Black woman's business -- because the talent is clear but I just ask that you please watch how you promote your business online if you can't match the expectations of parents and children with pure vulnerability. Don't advertise kindness, inclusion, and patience for all children if you or your staff are not truly prepared to deliver that experience in real life. You never know what kind of child is walking through your door and how your refusal to service them can impact their entire hair experience. You might not be able to see their needs just by looking at them -- but they all still deserve the same level patience you would give your regulars. Even as we left, and my daughter was crying hysterically, we weren't offered any adjustments or words to make us feel more welcomed next time (as other regular clients have written about). I was lucky to get her my first visit--she's talented and I was so pleased with the cut. She told me she had been cutting hair for 20+ years. The second time I mentioned my fine hair getting thinner. Unfortunately, my previous (very positive) experienced did not hold up. The salon ambience has been stripped... it felt very middle of the road decor-wise, loads of product shelves and no posh salon vibe remaining. I took a chance on a stylist who essentially ruined my hair with color. I've never had such a traumatic color job... the application of the foils and the color was insane - foils scrunched every which way, no rhyme or reason... she was so rough on my head when she removed the foils, that it actually hurt. But it was the result of the color that actually had me in tears. I had to go to another salon to have it fixed, and when i tried to get a refund for it from Mark Christopher they gave me a bit of a runaround for about two months before I finally got refunded. I don't love giving poor public reviews but sadly this place seems to have had a fall from grace from its original top salon status.
