They get really big portions cooked right in front of us so fresh so delicious and the price was so reasonable. It blew my mind. We had a Reservation at 6, however since we had a large party we waited well after 6(Reservations were made 3 days in advance) My friend wanted to go to Kiki's for her Birthday meal, which we usually go every year. It was packed when we arrived, once we finally got seated it was tight quarters on our side of the table-as there was 11 of us, we were elbow to elbow. Our server came out promptly and and took our drink order. Once the drinks arrived he took our meal order and then brought out our soup & salads. Both were delicious and then finally our chef came out to start our dinner/show! He was great and fun and interacted with us. Our meals were delicious and you definitely get plenty! I ordered the Filet and Shrimp which was cooked to my liking-Steak Med Rare! The dining experience can be loud and tight quarters so that's why I only gave 4 Stars. It was a Friday night when we went and they were quickly busing tables so we felt slightly rushed to get going. I will not be coming back to Kiku for hibachi anytime soon. I made reservations a few days before for our party of 2, and we arrived 10 minutes before our reservation time of 6:30. 45 minutes later, we still hadn't been seated, and people who arrived well after us were being seated. We were going to just leave, but decided to ask how much longer it would be. The host said there had been a mistake and that they had skipped us accidentally. She crossed something out next to my name and highlighted my name. She said it would be a few more minutes. 20 more minutes went by before we were seated. I normally give a pass to service issues, but Kiku had tons of staff. There were three people at the host stand, tons of servers, tons of bus staff, and so I'm not sure what the hold up was. It took 10 minutes to get drinks once seated. Another party at our table ordered sushi rolls at the same time as they ordered dinner, but got their sushi before we did. We ordered ours when we placed our drink order. We didn't get our sushi until after soup, salad, and the fried rice was done. I will say the sushi is the best I've had in Topeka by a wide margin. The spicy tuna roll was amazing. It was the one shining moment of the evening. Our hibachi chef cooked the food well, but didn't do any tricks and didn't interact with us beyond tossing a few shrimp. Looking around the restaurant, it looked like some of the other chefs were much better with making it more of an experience versus just watching someone cook your meal in front of you. I got the filet mignon, chicken, and shrimp, and got a ton of food to take home. It ended up being enough for 3 meals. So it was a good value, and I thought it tasted pretty good. I love hibachi and asked which one was the best in Topeka and was told to go here. It's in a shopping center and the host was nice when greeting us. We had someone meeting us so waited in the bar and ordered wine. Bar staff was friendly and attentive. Once the rest of our party arrived we were sat at a table with four others. Waitress was very helpful and we ordered. The hibachi came with soup or salad. Most places have both so no need to choose but i picked soup which was good. I ordered the filet and chicken as well as fried rice. The chef came to the table and put on a good show. I ordered filet medium and it was cooked good. Chicken was cooked well but not made with teriyaki which is how I prefer it. That may just be the difference from state to state so i didn't know to ask. After many years of enjoying their food. I have noticed the updated the restaurants ambience. But the fried rice is all but butter rice with some soy sauce on it. *****10/10 WOULD NOT RECOMMEND****** I've been visiting this establishment since I was a child, and it's honestly made a major turn for the worst the past year or so. Long story short the quality of food is not worth what is being charged, wait staff is terrible, and the manager is extremely disrespectful and lacks basic customer service. Today my whole family was finally able to get together and took me out to eat for my first Mothers Day. Of course I choose Kikus, because that's where we've celebrated my entire life. Though, from beginning to end this experience is by far the worst I've ever experienced in ANY restaurant. Our table wasn't given our soup or salad for a good 40 minutes after being seated, and was not given refills on our PAID drinks but once at the end of the meal. The ginger salad dressing had little to no ginger in it, and the soup while hot was extremely bland and tasteless. Salt improved the flavor and made it more like what was given to me in the past, I'm not sure if with the change in management they've decided to cut costs but the quality of food is no longer worth what they're charging. Once the waitress finally took our orders, and the chef came out there were immediate issues with what was written by the waitress as our order as it had multiple mistakes. The chef, who I unfortunately didn't get the name of but comes from a small island, was absolutely amazing and did everything he could to make it right. He personally left his station because he was being ignored by the wait staff to get more veggies, the correct cut of steak, more crab because they did not give enough for the entire parties order, and had to get more soy sauce himself. Though, due to him having to leave so many times while the food was cooking it caused my steak to be very well done when I had requested medium, and the chicken to be burned. Again, that is not a reflection of this amazing chef, but the management and waiting staff. He was pleasant, made the food to the best of his ability, apologized for the errors made in amounts/cuts of meat, and did his best to make it a pleasant experience. It's only due to him that I found any joy in the experience. The biggest issue I had was with the disrespect I faced from the manager. When I asked to speak with him about the service I received he offered what I thought was a 50% discount, and proceeded to walk away while I was still speaking to him. At that point we had been at the restaurant for over an hour and a half, and I was ready to walk away from a fundamental part of a my childhood forever and never go back. The meat on my plate was inedible, and I had maybe took 6 bites of my rice. We then waited another half hour to receive our sherbet, and checks. Our food was cold by the time we finally got the bill, and I noticed that only 15% was taken off for a total of $17.00. At that point I told the waitress that would not work for me and I needed to speak with the manager again. There was no way I was going to pay over $100.00 for food I didn't, and wouldn't, eat. She walked away, and we waited another 15 minutes. By that point I was furious, so my mom ended up tracking down the manager to speak with him about my order specifically and he did agree to remove it from the tab, which I paid for and then left. Unfortunately due to his personal disrespect, and blatant disregard for acceptable customer service, I will never be going to a place where my family and I have easily spent at least $15,000 dollars at during my life. The owners used to personally visit our table each time we came in. Words can't describe how disheartened I am to know that we will never celebrate there again. Now, the .5 Star. I called Tues for our Fri reservation. They rushed me through that and I should have known. We got there and we are not on the reservation list (Not first time).The bit of star is because I was pleasantly surprised when the whole party arrived, they seated us immediately. Next, the service. We only go for birthdays and every time, you can count on them writing down the order wrong and then not much after that. No one came to check on us or offer refills. We flagged the server down. She brought my husband a second drink from the bar and acknowledged we all would like refills. Then out right ignored that we also asked for drink refills around the whole table. We got up and asked someone else for more drinks. Our server rushed us out after that. If they could pull the front of the house together, they would have it made. read more

We live an hour away from Kiku's, and we called and asked if we could get put down for 6:30, and the man on the phone said they wouldn't add us to any list, that we had to be at the restaurant to check in and be added to it. I thought this must be a new thing because we always call when we are on the way, and have never had an issue with being put on the waitlist/reservation list. We arrive at the restaurant, and we get told that they aren't allowing walk-ins because they're too busy and we can get on the list. Restaurant needs to get their stuff together. Been coming here a long time and its nothing like it used to be. All but one chef is extremely mediocre dont expect anything fancier than an onion on fire. No one had a mask ( this was before the vaccine was widely available). I realized i had left my food on the table ( at least half of a 28 dollar meal). The food actually tastes good BUT... the place is VERY DIRTY. It is not clean. The space around the grills are super unsanitary. The cooks wheel out carts with food on them with no regard as to where the meat is placed or how it is stacked below other trays. I witnessed them push out a cart with raw steak and chicken on the bottom of the cart while another employee swept the floor right next to the meat. The atmosphere is wonderful and makes you feel like you stepped into another world. There are several dining rooms with multiple cooking tables. The lobby doubles as the cocktail lounge and sushi bar. There were several couples enjoying the sushi offerings. Everything looked delicious. The decor is very traditional and beautiful. We were quickly seated with another family. The server handed out menus and took our drink orders. He returned quickly with our beverages and took our dinner requests. Soon, the chef arrived with a cart filled with our food. He confirmed each person's order and started the cooking show. I've been to many Japanese steak houses and seen some fantastic chefs. This was not one of them. The food was perfectly cooked. Rice, vegetables, shrimp, chicken, steak; each was seasoned and cooked to order. Fantastic flavor. However, the show was not impressive. Generally, the chefs put on a spectacular presentation complete with humorous lines. Our chef was a little disappointing. I was prepared to lower my rating until I saw the chef at the next table. Very entertaining and flamboyant! He was spinning knives, flinging shrimp, drumming pepper grinders and building an impressive onion volcano. We have been regulars at Kiku's for years. We go every weekend. The past few months have been very sparatic. We will have 1 great visit then 3 to 4 bad visits. The prices have gone up and the portions have become much much smaller. Yesterday was the final straw for us. We will not be going back. We always order expensive entrees ($25 or more) each. Our steak was way over cooked. We order rare and it was medium to well done. Our side of shrimp was 6 or 7 pieces when normal portion in the past has been approximately 15 or more. The side of rice and vegetables were a child size or smaller. Our bill came to $85 and it was down right horrible!!!! We didn't eat most of it and threw it away. I hate to complain and the owners are nice but we won't return anymore. There is a place in Lawrence similar to Kiku's that we are going to try. Not sure if they own that place or not. I have a gluten allergy. In this day and age, most restaurants make accommodation for food allergies. Everything I asked about they didn't want to accommodate me & the we're actually rude about it. If you want gluten-free Yuki is the best place to go & we will continue going there. Yuki staff were so kind and accommodating! Kiku bathrooms were terrible, service was poor and the hibachi grills have food stuck in the corners and bugs or rodents probably feast on that when the lights go out. I will not return! read more
