Literally a couple steps from Phoenix and SO unassuming, but super great! We got the butter roll cake and the cake was so dense and tasted really high quality (more like a castella cake than sponge). The cream was more pudding texture than whipped cream like typical roll cakes, but I liked it! Also, only $1??? HOW We also tried the chicken cookies for my friend's nostalgia and she said they taste like others she's had, except they're usually more thick/chewy. **September 2021 Visit: LA Mask Mandate Enforced** I had a parent gift me mooncakes from this bakery, so I thought I would come check out the original store. From my understanding this is a Vietnamese bakery that specializes in various mooncakes and other baked goods. I've tried the following on two visits. Brown Crust: This is probably what most people think of when you say mooncake. It's the cantonese style with a more doughy exterior and there are many different filling flavors to choose from. Some have egg and some don't, but I think I prefer without egg. Each box has a different price-point. 25+ a box of four. White Crust: This is a Vietnamese style and it tastes lot like mochi! The outside is shaped the same as a traditional brown mooncake and this particular one had a design of a lotus flower. The inside has a smooth paste consistency. I really enjoyed this and it would make for an excellent dessert! They sold them by the box, but individually it was $6. Flaky Round Pastry: These are the Teochow styles. The exterior is flaky. On this visit I tried both winter-melon and lotus filled. The lotus is smooth and the winter-melon has many crunchy and different textures. Each was $5. I think they also sell other baked goods, but since I visited during the Mid-Autumn Moon Festival weekend these were their primary items in stock. Ahead of the Mid-Autmn Festival (Moon Festival, Mooncake Festival, Autumn Solstice, Chuseok, Tsukimi, Tet Trung Thu, and I'm sure it goes by other names in other cultures), this place makes the best Mooncake I have ever had. If in SoCal, make the effort, try this place, it is truly one of a kind. The two I chose for this year is the "00" which I am told has two eggs and is delicious. And the other "12" is one of my all time favorites with Mung bean and Durian paste. My mom and I also really like the Banh In Dau Xanh a kind of white pastry with white mung bean filling. We were fortunate enough that this bakery has a vendor right outside our favorite noodle house in Santa Ana (Trieu Chau). Have a safe and happy moon festival everyone! read more

I was in the mood for sponge cake - truly craving it after a hearty lunch, and saw this place on Yelp. I was a little disappointed to see after walking here from my Chinatown lunch that they were out of sponge cake. The disappointment didn't last too long since I was able to snag a slice of their butter roll (I call them cake rolls) for $1. It wasn't sponge cake, but it was delicious and had a custard creaminess in between the roll that I treasured. Definitely a wonderful snack and I ate it while walking to my next destination. The bakery itself is pretty casual, and maybe someday I'll try their sponge cake. Wow! This little place is great. If you don't feel like waiting in a long line at Phoenix Bakery then Kim Hung is just a stones throw away! I stopped in to see what sort of items they had and I was not disappointed. I bought these southern desserts from a stand outside the trieu chou restaurant at the westminister. Chicken biscuits are crunchy delicious, just a hint of salt and animal fat. The egg base butterfly dessert has a coat of sweetener on top, not exactly the same as the Cantonese version. Grateful that the shop has dispatched good stands in these popular chinese shopping plaza, I wish they can have the goods available in the Chinese grocery market. read more

Kim Hung Bakery is truly a hidden gem. I ordered the lotus seed pastry, which I can not recommend enough. The crust is buttery and flaky, while the filling is rich without being overwhelmingly sweet. I had tried to buy them in Asia but it was the wrong time of the year. I bought one to share with my husband. Small lil Mom and Pop bakery shop - named after my brother and I - heheh, jk, but it does have our names. Simple, no frills bakery shop. My favorite thing they sell there is the sponge cake $1.50 (used to be $1). It's 6 inches of light, fluffy, moist vanilla scented sponge cake. Great lil snack you can eat on the go. They also sell ones with whipped cream in the middle, but doesn't look too appealing. Parking: One metered parking spot in front. There's also an alley way parking area, and you can try parking in the Phoenix Bakery parking lot, but make sure you don't get towed, lol! read more

We stumbled upon this bakery on one Saturday afternoon as we were strolling in China town and we were looking for afternoon snack. Although their store front is very modest, their pastries and cookies are not. We got lotus seed pastry, winter melon pastry (savory) and almond cookie. Lotus seed pastry stuffing is smooth, moist, fragrant and sweet just as Chaozhou pastry should be. Winter melon stuffing is well balanced between sweet and savory. Pastry crust is delicate and flaky yet moist. Almond cookie is fresh, crunchy and perfectly sugared. The staff is very friendly too. He really expressed that he was happy we stopped by. WOW no reviews for this place yet. I actually didn't physically go to the store, but I purchased a bunch of Chinese New Year goodies which were made by this bakery. This man had a makeshift stall set up outside of a restaurant and he was selling a selection of CNY stuff like sweet lotus seeds, peanut candy, sesame candy both black and white, these cakes which resembled 'lo poh beng'. He was letting people sample his wares and I thought I'd just grab a piece to try and that's it. Hubby and I both tried a piece and of course, we were hooked after that. We bought one box of the peanut candy and one with the mix of the three: peanut, white sesame and black sesame. These candies are more like American brittle, but it's not sweet like brittle. The peanuts have a slightly salty flavor and together with the sweetness of the sugar, make a delicious combination. The other important factor is that it has to be very fresh. If the peanut oil go rancid just a tad, the candy would be gross. These were truly fresh, crunchy and absolutely tasty!! read more

This is a tiny little bakery at the northern end of Broadway. I've bought goods from it a few times over the years and have completely forgotten until a recent visit, its charms. I was in a mood for bean cakes. Actually not just any bean cake, red bean cake specifically. The more popular bakeries include Queen's (nowhere near as good as it once was), Wonder Bakery (I wonder why its so popular...) and Phoenix (decent). Queen's used to make really good bean cakes and moon cakes, but the quality really is poor now. And then I remembered Kim Hung... The store is tiny and somewhat ill lit. But what selection they have is of good quality. Their bean cakes are heavy, and good. Inside them is plenty of bean paste, and the taste is just right, not particularly sweet. The pastry shell is fairly flaky, as it should be. The girl who I usually have seen behind the counter is nice and if you ask specific questions, she will answer them pretty well. She's fairly shy otherwise. At any rate, it's a nice if unadorned bakery, and well worth a visit. read more
