I have known Edan for nearly 20 years, and he has been a tremendous source of knowledge, inspiration and hands-on healing. In 2008, I was in the throes of lower back pain with sciatica lasting nearly a year. Many of my favorite go-to bodywork modalities did not really feel so good to my back, and some even triggered my sciatica. I was at a loss for where to go and what to do to heal. With a combination of MAT, acupuncture, chiropractic adjustments and Edan's KBT, I was able to overcome the pain and completely move through my sciatica without recurrence to date! I tried the couples' massage class, a private couple's massage lesson, and have had two massages, and all have been great, really illuminating. Edan's style seems more intuitive than systematic, so I guess I can understand where the other reviewer was coming from when she said the private lesson seemed "unplanned". Since I'm also more on the intuitive side, though, it seemed perfect to me: flexibly adapted to individual needs and curiosity rather than a strict pre-determined program. (The massages go the same way - they are comprehensive in a sort of exploratory way, but mostly just adapt to your current situation.) I would bet that Edan would meet whatever amount of systematicity you wanted to bring to the lesson, though, so ask for what you want. He brings some handouts and anatomical drawings to give you a more objective understanding of how the muscles lay in the body, but of course the real point of the hands-on class is to develop a more subjective understanding. I've learned so much in each experience. I think I'm still processing a lot of it. But much like a good yoga class can help you find pain you never realized you had, each experience has helped me find pain, misalignment, tension, impaction, etc, that I wouldn't have otherwise come close to observing or sensing. It has all helped me to much better understand how much of the chronic pain I can sense is caused by maladaptions to, by mindlessly triaging, the chronic pain I'm generally oblivious to. Also, I want to add, I'm normally a little reluctant to get massages. (Hence the multiple couples' massage classes.) The whole "being touched by a stranger" thing that's, ha ha, such an essential component of the massage is difficult for me. The fact that Edan works with you fully clothed definitely helps, but even better is his total nonchalance about bodily weirdness and deformity. There's no embarrassing condescension about ugliness, spine-twistiness, inability to move a certain way, etc, it just all is what it is. If you have any of the same mental barriers going on, I would recommend Edan: he seems to be able to release those kinds of knots as instinctively as the muscular ones. read more

This past weekend, I had the great good fortune of a session with Edan, who was recommended to me by a dear friend. I had woken up that morning with intense back spasms, so intense I could walk only super slowly and could not lean or bend. I was in a lot of pain and took some medicine to help so I could move. The medicine helped to smooth out the spasms and I was then able to walk better; however, it was still very sore and tender. Enter Edan. Within two minutes of the start of our session, he had me laying on my back and was pressing a point on my hip, which magically released the soreness in my lower back! I was amazed. He then proceeded to rotate my hips back into position and after our session, I got off the table-- no soreness. No tenderness. Nothing. I could move freely. I have to say I was totally surprised. Usually my experience of massage is that my back can get more sore afterwards first, then it gets better. It's never that the pain is just.. gone. But somehow I got off the table and whatever had been happening had moved. I woke up the next morning.. pain still gone. I proceeded to go to the gym to work with my personal trainer.. which was fine! Many lunges later.. still fine. And it's been five days now and I have no trace of discomfort. Edan is highly talented and I don't pretend to understand how what he does works, but it definitely does. He is sensitive, knowledgeable, and effective. I have major back problems, and Edan has been a godsend. I've been going weekly for a couple months now, and I see progress each. The pain is gone for several days after each visit, and my body is finding its way back to alignment, so I'm not recreating the problem. (Ie, it's actually having a significant cumulative, sustained impact.) Edan has a great technique. He goes deep, but works his way in gradually, and helps me relax so he can ease some of the knots out and dig in for the tough ones. I took a 2 hour long couples massage session. My partner has pretty severe scoliosis so the session focused on relieving her back pain. We learned some really effective techniques and my partner said she felt a significant degree of pain relief. Edan is a very relaxed and insightful teacher, and was willing to show me some advanced pain reduction techniques which I was very grateful for. I highly recommend his classes! read more

I have suffered from chronic neck and back pain from an injury a few years ago. The only relief (however temporary) that I had was from Rolfing or from deep, bruising tissue massage. Don't get me wrong, I love massage. Deep tissue, sports, swedish, whatever. But when I really needed some relief, nothing was cutting it long term. Then I met Edan. My boyfriend decided to surprise me with a visit from Edan last evening to our home. He was incredibly polite and professional; right at home. When he started to work on me he could pinpoint the areas of large knots and tension, and asked a few questions about how i typically felt day to day. I cracked a joke about not even being able to wear a shoulder bag (sadly, its not a joke) and he was thoughtful for a moment. He then said, "Want to see something cool?" and pressed lightly on the area most knotted on my back. IT WAS GONE That horrific knot that I constantly shift on my chair to get at, lean against wall corners and door jams just to press on it, just disappeared. I didn't even believe it. He explained to me that the body sometimes needs to have the nervous system spoken to as opposed to the muscular structure for results. It was incredible. Long story short, after one of the most restful nights I've had in a while, and my body weight worth of water through my system, I feel amazing. Beyond amazing, I feel HOPEFUL. *This review is only for the couples massage class, not for a session with Edan* I went to this massage class today, and at first was really excited after I saw this groupon for a 90 minute couples massage class for $80 on LivingSocial because it seemed like an out-of-the-box fun class to take with my bf. After speaking with Edan directly, he convinced me that a 60 minute private lesson for $125 would be more worth it saying "In a 1-hr private lesson with me, you will learn at least 3 times what you learn in a 90-min group class due to the dynamics of the session. It's also fully customized where a group class has a specific protocol", so i decided to upgrade sessions as a fun relaxing thing to do with my bf. Just want to reiterate that I really wanted to provide a great review, and I'm sure that his massage sessions are indeed fantastic, but this class just was not worth it. Here is why: I'll start with the good: - Very personable, easy to talk to & professional, knowledgable - Walked away with maybe 2-3 applicable moves - On his site he says "A knot released painlessly in 7 seconds or less?"; he released 2 of my knots, and it was easily the most valuable 14 seconds of the whole session The bad & the disappointing: - for a class that you're paying $2+ a minute, every second counts, and he was late; I will say, he called 40 minutes prior to the appointment to notify me of this, but I was already on my way; also, he forgot to keep track of when we actually started - a considerable amount of the class was spent talking through things and I guess I assumed/ was hoping it would be much much more hands on - the "agenda" seemed loose, it was unstructured, and felt rushed - I had asked about techniques for scalp massages, but he seemed to focus primarily on neck & back which is fine, but I wouldn't call it a "customizable" protocol Overall, I think this class has potential to be awesome, but my experience was that it's overpriced, underwhelming and frankly a rip-off. I wish I had spent this time and money getting a couples massage instead. For 20 minutes of talk, 20 minutes of quick "watch/learn/try" lessons on your partner & 20 minutes of laying there getting intermittently practiced on but not actually massaged, I walked away feeling pretty disappointed. If you're really interested, I would suggest the living social deal because I think you'll learn the same amount, spend less, have more time being hands on, & not be so rushed. I'm sure HE is an awesome masseuse & HIS SESSIONS might be amazing, but this class was not something I'd recommend. I might feel differently had I actually experienced a massage, but the short quick lessons during the session were too sporadic to tell. read more

I purchased a couples massage lesson and was surprised by the detailed and seemingly advanced techniques he was able to teach us in just an hour. He's also a really nice, down to earth guy. He seems to be a very knowledgeable, very skilled practitioner. Highly recommended. My boyfriend and I decided to try the couple's massage class after we found the deal on Groupon. It was a really basic intro class on how to give a good massage, focusing mainly on being in tune to your partner's body and body mechanics. I found it helpful but if you're looking for a class focusing more on different massage techniques then it's probably not for you. However Edan is great--really patient and helpful--and if you want to do something more advanced then he'll show you. Overall we enjoyed it and are looking forward to practicing more at home :) read more

I went through a couple's massage class with Edan in February and I was beyond happy. Edan was extremely comforting, knowledgable, and he was very nice (especially when we showed up to the wrong building and arrived late! We felt welcomed and felt that we did not burden his class.) We learned a lot of technique and we were satisfied by the amount of time we actually had to try these out on each other.
