Moving to Fort Walton Beach from Charleston, SC I was curious what the barbecue scene would be here. Checked this place out. Food was good, had Carolina Gold sauce! "Chipped" pork was different. No hash and rice which was a bummer. Staff was great. Cool atmosphere and ambience at the joint. I showed up here because I smelled the barbecue as I drove past it. I'm giving this place 5 stars because I started eating here in the early 1990s. It was good then, and now eating here after 10 years, it's just as good! Some may refer to is as a "hole in the wall" but I call It a true staple of the community. Never have I ever had better BBQ anywhere. Their coke slaw is fantastic too. With so many places in the area offering coke slaw as a side, you will find so many variations, but theirs is the best. Also, no one has better sweet tea. Leaving the pitcher on the table is brilliant. I love how it caters to our military. This is a true hidden gem. Was craving some BBQ while in the area, looked up BBQ restaurants, this one had top reviews, thought I'd give it a try. Strangely enough I couldn't find brisket on the menu until a waitress kindly told me the chipped beef and sliced beef was brisket. I ordered a large sandwich on a whopper sized bun, just in case it was small portions, with beans, and a water. Strangely again I inquired about the sauces to see the options. They only had mustard base sauces, none with apple cider vinegar. I went with the homemade hot BBQ sauce on her suggestion. The sandwich was really underwhelming when it arrived. A standard sized portion of chopped brisket with two pickles. Nothing about it looked like " the large". The brisket was practically cold, and the "large whopper style bun" reminded me of a cheap fast food hamburger bun, with parts of it crumbling as you ate it. The beans were good, and the homemade hot bbq sauce was good aswell. Affordably priced at 11 dollars for my meal, unfortunately it definitely didn't live up to the hype. read more

A surprise find after eating beach food for a week. We searched for Bar-B-Q for something different and found this genuine hole-in-the-wall gem. It was great enough to convince us to come back the next time we find ourselves vacationing in Navarre Beach. So, yes, the drive to inland Fort Walton was worth it. Wood smoked in-house, family-owned, local flavor, and their HOUSE sauce is a great interpretation of Carolina barbecue (which I never liked) which actually has substance and a great flavor other than vinegar. They have a HOT sauce and a "sweet" more Texas-style sauce, too. Very family friendly, very very good food for the money. read more

We got the chipped (pulled pork) dinner with homestyle brunswick stew, potato salad and a dinner roll. The only thing that was resemblant of what it was supposed to be was the potato salad. The roll was cold so no need for the butter. The homestyle brunswick stew..... love brunswick stew but could have closed my eyes and not even known what it was. The bbq pork had a burnt taste which means it was well overdone. The helping was small and had we singled out the stringy, hard, chewy parts that usually are not served, we would not have had much left. I read the other reviews that liked the pork and all I can figure out was they were "regulars" so they made sure they get the good stuff and people they figure will never come back get stuck with the tough, chewy part. The burnt taste spread throughout the whole serving of BBQ so mission accomplished......we won't become regulars even though we live in the area. The price compared to what we actually got, serving size and quality wise was a wide gap also. Maybe $9 worth of food for $26.00. Now the not so good part if it could be worse. The oldest lady of the 3 there that day was coughing and she would cough in her hand and then pick up the frys by the handle with no gloves, answer the phone, check people out at the register after lots of coughing with no protection. I was facing the employee area so I had a birdseye view of it all. Even went and sat at a customers' table still coughing in her hand and not one time did she wash her (hand). Unbeknownst, to the other two ladies who were working, they touched everything after she did so they were transferring germs. I kept trying to catch one of the other ladies checking people out as figuring they were less contaminated but never did so I went and paid the bill and gave my credit card and hands a good soaking wipe down with hand sanitizer and disappeared never to return. read more

Very good bbq. The bbq smell smacks you in the face as soon as you get out of your car. And that is a glorious experience. I was sold from that point. Best sweet tea I had in the area the two weeks I was there. I had a combo plate with chipped pork and ribs. I really enjoyed my chipped pork, potato salad, and cole slaw. Really decent bbq. I'm from eastern NC so I enjoy a vinegar based bbq sauce. Kinfolk's offers a mustard vinegar based bbq and a sweet bbq sauce. Both were really good. I've had mustard base in Columbus, GA. This mustard base is different but still good. The sweet bbq sauce was good too. I went during lunch and still received pretty fast and good service. We had a work crew lunch in Feb 2016, As a group of 11 people military group from around the world (bringing first timers) our combined score was 2.7 soo yes I rounded up. Pros- Waitress was nice and helpful - Food smells amazing from outside - The food didn't take to long to arrive. - Seating area adequate not fancy but alright - Waitress kept the sweet tea coming - The French fries were liked by all :) Cons- The special BBQ sauce was like runny water no thickness to it and (I'm from TX) not flavorful. - we got there at 4, they close at 5 and the chicken, chopped brisket were dried out and almost unbeatable. A lot of the meat lack moisture or juiciness to make you want to keep eating. - The highest score 4.5 lowest score 0 got a refund she won't be coming back. - The sides were mediocre nothing fancy and no Mac-n-cheese :( - Out of 10 grown ups 5 said they would return if they were in the location but 1/2 would not go out their way. Maybe if we got there once they opened it would have been a different experience but we were doing a local restaurant hop and decided to try this one. Normally this place is great and had awesome home cooked meals, they may have had an off day, but they are still great so I give them a 4 for the usually good service me and my family received. read more

Kinfolk's BBQ did not disappoint. It is a very simple, low key, diner style restaurant, with very good BBQ. The first thing to grab my husband's and my attention was the scent- the seductive, aphrodisiac scent of hardwood turned to smoke.  I ordered the Ribs and Chipped Pork. Both were perfect... Possibly the best ribs I have ever had. They were juicy and tender and they tugged cleanly off the bone- but didn't fall off the bone. The BBQ pit is in plain sight right behind the counter. The portions are not overwhelmingly large, this may not be ideal for everyone, but I did not leave feeling miserable and the prices are very reasonable. If you are looking for great brisket. Go somewhere else. The fact that they don't list brisket on their menu should have been the clue. I thought sliced beef would be slices of tender brisket cooked low and slow with a nice bark and great flavor. Instead they served up dry (fast and hot cooked) flat cut into relative small pieces with very little bark and little flavor. The flavor came from what a appears to be a mayonaise (maybe mustard too) based "barbeque sauce" which they spread over the meat. In Texas, brisket is served with barbeque sauce on the side and good brisket doesn't need any sauce. read more

Went here for dinner. I ordered the family pack, with Brunswick soup and beans. I was feeding several people, so I ordered a few extras (chicken, and ribs). When I finally made it home, there was no BBQ. There were buns, and LOTS of BBQ sauce, but nothing to put on the buns. When I called, they tried to say I was not charged and they "thought" I wanted the ribs as the main meat even though I made it very clear I was ordering for a big group. The service was friendly, but dumb as $#!%. Now to get to the one star. I could get over the fact that the employees are intellectually challenged, but the food was terrible. The ribs were so dry, they could pass for beef jerky. The chicken seemed like it was sitting out all day at room temperature. No flavor in the chicken at all; also dry. The Brunswick stew tasted like it was out of a can. The beans were good. All-in-all, I paid a lot of money for a little bit of crappy food. Can't bring myself to go back. read more

I round this place up to 4-stars since I've only been once and got the chipped pork sandwich with fries. Looking to go back and sample the beef and ribs. Overall the pork was a bit on the soft side texture-wise, appearance was pretty good with some charred bits, however it was a little tough to tell the flavor since it came with sauce on it and I couldn't get a plain chunk to gauge the smokiness. Seemed mildly flavored despite the sauce. I'll be back and I'm rating it slightly above average for BBQ around here at the moment. Kinfolks is one of those local gems that people hope to find. If you are at all a fan of bbq I highly recommend going. Their bbq style is a little carolina.. a slight taste of vinegar in the sauce if you will. There is always a bit of smoke coming from their chimney as they genuinely smoke and bbq their meats. The fries are unique and delicious and sweet tea is great. You come here for the food - not so much a 'fine dining' experience. I recommend a pulled pork bbq sandwich, fries, small cup of baked beans and sweet tea. Delicious and well priced. I don't understand all the stars! The inside was just plain dirty. The next time you "five star" reviewers go there, take a good look at the floor, the walls, and even the ceiling tiles. If that little care is taken to maintain the dining room, what do you think the food prep area is like? ?..scary! We sat at a table that had just been used but not cleaned. And there was no effort made to at least wipe it down. Refills for the sweet tea were in a pitcher that was already sitting on the table from the last party who sat there. I looked at the other tables and they were the same. The bbq pork sandwich was awful. Was that supposed to be Slaw in the sandwich? The "chipped" beef sandwich was no better. Dry and tasteless. There aren't many BBQ places in our area, but this one doesn't even make the list of places I might consider eating at. One star because the review won't post with no stars. read more

Down-home country goodness! I had a half-rack of ribs here recently and was very pleased with the quality of the food and the service that I received. Kin Folks is in a sort of out of the way part of Fort Walton Beach (in my opinion) and is easy to miss if you aren't looking for it. They are a family owned operation and on the night that we went in here, the owner was at the pit cooking the ribs. The ribs were very good and had a nice smoky flavor to them, they come slathered in a really good mustard sauce that in my humble opinion is much better than their sweet or hot sauce. I couldn't tell much about the rub or the spices that were used; the mustard sauce sort of hijacks your mouth once you start eating. The portion size was good and the ribs had plenty of meat on them, I have noticed that a half-rack is not always the same size in every establishment. They only serve spare ribs here and that's worth one star all by itself in my opinion,LOL. I had the potato salad as a side and to be honest, I didn't care for it too much but that's just a personal preference. I think that I have come to the conclusion that the potato salad is much better in the state of Georgia for some reason and it kills me to say that since I'm a Florida boy,LOL. The prices are very reasonable and I felt like I got my money's worth. This place has a real homey/comfortable feel to it and is worth a stop when you're in Fort Walton Beach and want some good BBQ. read more

On the recommendation of a friend, my wife and I had lunch here today. We ordered the feast which is a bbq sampler. We both agreed that the bbq was very good. It was more than enough food for both of us and we left with to go containers. Wait staff was very friendly and a good server.
