Hidden Gem Fish Aquarium store!! Went over to favorite local quarium store called "King Aquarium" off Story Road in East Side Sna Jose. This place has a grear selection of fresh water fish for very reasonable prices. She has some real exotic stuff I've never seen before. I purchased 3 medium sized Corey Catfish for $9 each and 3 very cool looking comet goldfish for $1.99 each. I've purchase some other fish from heron the past and they were al great quality. If you're in the Bay Area and are looking for a great store to buy tropical or gold fish this is a great place to go... great prices and selection. Call before you show up as she's not always open. Haven't been here in a few years and it has changed a lot, and unfortunately not for the better. I don't know if it's just temporary but the back half of the store is no longer accessible and the store is only a quarter size of what it used to be. There was a small selection of freshwater fish and a lot of the tanks were empty or the fish were in poor shape. The variety of fish were also limited with a few species that are somewhat uncommon but i wouldn't say rare. Prices are moderate to high and for some of the quality of fish, very overpriced. The front still has the two giant tanks but they don't seem to maintain them as well anymore. i used to be excited to stop by here and see what different types of fish they would have but that is not the case now. For the prices, i rather go somewhere else or buy online and get much better quality. I unfortunately can't recommend this place anymore unless you are in the area and have 10 minutes to kill because that is how long it took me to see the whole store. read more

King Aquarium is hands down my favorite local fish store. Every fish and crustacean here is consistently healthy, active, and thriving. Their selection is outstanding, with a wide variety of species -- including many exotic options you don't often see elsewhere. The owner regularly stocks pea puffers, which are a rare find, and we've also purchased rare Amazon puffers from here that are still thriving months later. We've picked up dwarf crayfish too, all in excellent condition. If I had more money, I'd probably be in the store every day! King Aquarium offers an incredible variety -- beautiful and exotic species like eels, pacus, cichlids, a wide range of puffer fish including mbu's, massive catfish, goldfish of every type, and even turtles. And that's just SOME of them. The owner is extremely kind, knowledgeable, and easygoing, creating a welcoming atmosphere every time you visit. 8 out of 10 times you attempt to go to this business it will be closed. If they want to work that day, it will be open. If they don't feel like working, they won't be open. I guess it's a hobby for them. Obviously they don't rely on sales to pay their living. Anyways, when they are open the lady with the tattoos is very nice. Theirs another elderly lady there that doesn't really want to help. I'm pretty satisfied with the fish and customer service. The only problem is they're never open. I go to CD aquarium. All the fish I bought from CD died and killed a few of my koi fish as well. I think they had some kind of sickness. If you need Koi food and cd aquarium is open. Just get your food there. It has been over a decade since I've been to King Aquarium, and I am glad I stopped by. The place has downsized to about half its original size, and they no longer carry any saltwater fish. If you are a freshwater enthusiast, it will be worthwhile to swing by. Since I was re-starting my fish-keeping hobby, I knew I would have to invest in special-order items like a tank stand and canopy. Luckily I was able to consult with the owner (Crystal), and she placed my order that same day. My order arrived at the shop within a week, and I swung by to pick it up. Now that my display tank is set up and fully cycled, I was ready to start stocking it with new fish. KA had every African Cichlid fish I wanted, and I got them added to my tank within a week. Fast forward a month my fish continue to thrive. I call the shop occasionally to pick Crystal's brain, and she continues to provide me with expert knowledge that allows me to create the best environment for my fish. King Aquarium was my last stop on a journey to 5 different LFS in the SJ area and I'm so glad I came. Located on the far end of a tiny strip mall, I was afraid that the store was closed when I drove up. When you walk in, you're greeted by a huge display tank that looks like it belongs in an actual aquarium with giant ol' catfish and other large specimens. The store itself is neatly laid out into rows and they've got lots of fish that I hadn't seen in other shops: catfish, two types of freshwater puffer (pea and a larger variety), bumblebee gobies, plecos, and the usual community fish. I wish they had a website! My family and I got to take our time browsing and enjoying the beautiful fish. All the fish in the tanks looked healthy and active. The lady who helped us let us choose our own fish and patiently caught each one (other shops just gave me whatever the first ones they caught were). She happily shared her knowledge on care and acclimation. Best part? My fish are thriving at home AND King Aquarium's prices beat out all of the competitors' by at least a dollar per fish which really adds up if you're buying several! read more

Absolutely love this place. A year ago we built a pond with a waterfall and mermaid fountain and we got our fantail goldfish, high fin sharks, and a loach from King. They're thriving so we went again today and got two more loaches and four unique goldfish -- a combination of koi and Shubunkin -- and they're absolutely beautiful! Great selection of fish and fish related stuff and junk! My wife loves fishies and every time we are in the area we have to stop in and pick up another water creature for our tank. I like coming here as it's like a trip to a fish zoo! The tanks are (mostly) all well maintained and each one has a different look. Colored stones, different plant life, almost like themes. Sadly some of the tanks had dead creatures floating in them. I guess with so many tanks these things happen but it's a bit of a buzz kill for the zoo experience. Imagine seeing a dead monkey at the zoo, ugh. This place is far from my home so I rely on the interweb for accurate information. Google told us they were open on Monday but when we arrived on one trip, there was a sign on the window that said "closed for super bowl". On Monday? I guess fish folks get hangovers too ;) They do have a check in offer for 10% off so that's worth a trip there. Their prices seemed reasonable to me anyways but I was more impressed with their selection. Service is friendly, knowledgeable, and pretty fast but we got a sick fish on our last visit. I really want to give them a better rating but I think 3 stars is fair all thing considered. so this was the 1st time I was in the store . I was in the area and wanted to check out another different fish store to see what they have in stock in fresh water fish. I just started a fish tank not too long ago and trying to add come cool fishes to my collections. they had a large salt water selection seemed not to bad kind of a large selection compared to most retail pets stores. They have pretty high prices on the fish looked like I did find these unique color full mini guppies I got a pair of.. they are still alive and se em to be very active in my tank so I'm very pleased with my purchase of these fish's here. this place I would recommend if you are looking for fishes only I didn't really see any tanks or accessories available really here. If you have a salt water tank I think you will enjoy the section a lot better.. They did have a very cool largeeeeeeeeee tank in the front and the lady that was working was very friendly and even showed me how she feeds them . she gave them some large pellets .. I've been going to Kings for years now. They always have a great selection of cichlids that I haven't seen in a lot of other stores. Fish are healthy and they are fairly priced. Some are more expensive than others because of the rarity of them which is understandable. They even have some hybrids I've never seen before or that stores don't carry (I purchased some cool electric blue Jack dempseys the last time I was there). The lady that works there is always so friendly and helpful anytime I have questions about a fish or I'm purchasing something. Highly recommend checking this place out you won't regret it. read more

It's been awhile since I've been back to King Aquarium. Mainly because I got out of being a Saltwater Hobbyist (reef aquarium) since I started traveling way too much for work. I used to come here almost every week to checkout their new corals. They continue to have a good selection on equipment, but I did not see as many selections on corals or even marine fishes. They used to be famous for having some of the largest selection of its kind. I guess either reefers hobbyist have traded on their own since there are quite a few clubs and events out there that caters to this, or other locations have provided a bigger selection. We arrived at 6.25pm, 20 mins before closing time the asian lady with a bunch a tatoos on her arm told us she closes at 7 pm which I already knew. 7 minutes later she came over and ask if i needed help as i was still trying to decide whether to go from community to ciclids or gold fish. So i said don't worry we will be done before you close then she said. I normally close 10 mins before you can come back another day which I replied i can purchase some fish because that was my intention after not finding anything at petco / petsmart. Then she quickly grabbed a bag and asked what i wanted. All this time i can tell she is very annoyed with us. So i quickly picked 2 small fishes paid and was out the door at 6.55pm. Even during the checkout she kept telling me her store is one of the few stores that closes at 7pm. Well then just change your time to 6.45pm if you want your customer out early. I am likely going back but be warned if you arrive closed to closing time. read more

The younger woman working here cheated me. I asked for four bundles of anacharis (a water plant). As she was picking out the plants and placing them in a bag, she threw in some broken-off sections and said they were "extras." I paid for the bag of plants without checking it -- I am a trusting person -- and thought the price seemed awfully high. When I got home and placed the plants in my pond, I noticed a sticker on the bag said SIX plants, not the four I requested. What was in the bag was three rubber-banded bundles of anacharis, and several of the "extra," broken pieces of plant. Totally dishonest seller. read more

My dad recently went nuts and decided to upgrade and add an an additional 125 gallon tank to the living room! He found a very nice one at King. I must say considering the high prices for their supplies and live the 125 gallon was a good deal. The only thing that sucked was we had to pay for delivery. I mean damn, you guys just made a $1300 sale and you couldn't throw in free delivery? Honestly, I know most the reviews for King have issues with the customer service but whenever I interact with them, they are usually very knowledgeable and approachable. Customer service alone, I give King aquarium 3 solid stars. Affordability....its still very pricey. Over all, I'm still happy with King aquarium. Being a fish hobbyist is not easy and already very pricey. Its always nice to have your questions answered when asked. read more

This place has gone to crap... A few years ago when I became interested in having a fish tank, I researched a bunch of stores in the South Bay to find the best place for betta fish. I came to King Aquarium because they were well known for their large and beautiful assortment of bettas. I ended up buying a healthy blue half moon that I had for several years and loved dearly! He was awesome! I recently got back into the aquarium hobbyist life and wanted to get another betta for my new setup. (I live in San Francisco now and bought an amazing purple/blue/red Rosetail half moon from Ocean Aquarium). While visiting San Jose, I decided to stop by King Aquarium to check out their selection as well as other tank accessories I may need. The fish here are all sick and dying, especially the betta fish. How in the world do they think they can sell a betta for an upwards of $25 and they're all suffering from fin rot?? None of the betta fish have lively personalities and they're all laying on the bottom of their filthy bowls like corpses. I even saw several dead fish in some of their freshwater tanks. The employees suck here too. Nobody asked me if I needed anything (was actually looking for live food) and all 3 male employees working at 1:30pm on 12/15 sat on their rear ends while playing with their phones. I absolutely hate the location, the streets around this area are ALWAYS busy no matter the time or day. Customer service definitely has room for improvement. Reasoning? They hold their noses high up and thinks all of their customers are idiots. We had came in here, and asked if they had any colt coral. The employee pointed at a kenya tree and tried to pass that off as a colt coral. They look alike, but c'mon now! I've been to A LOT of fish stores and this one is certainly unique. Every time I come here, it's the same vibe... Annoyance of customers. How are you supposed to run a business acting like that? Hey buddy, get off your high horse and take that damn stick out of your ass. I would give 1 stat but they sometimes have items you can't find elsewhere (colorful and unique betta that you can't find elsewhere). I absolutely hate when they get my money. read more

This establishment is located in "King EggRoll Plaza," next to Grand Century Mall in San Jose. This is a good place to look at fish and get an idea of what one would like to do as far as decorating and setting up their own home aquarium. After that, you should leave. Just go. I purchased ghost shrimp and clown loaches at my friend's request once and I am not sure how those (his) fish and shrimp are doing. However, even with their competitive prices, my own experience was largely negative. While I enjoyed seeing all the different kinds of fish (fresh and salt water), I did not like the customer service. While I understand everyone's personality has its high's and low's, the owner seemed really arrogant, never smiled, and was not much of a people person, the 4 times I went to the store to look at the fish. Most of the employees are okay as far as people skills go. They have a huge selection of freshwater fish available. I noticed they even have barracudas and I think the red bellied pacus they have look stunningly similar to red bellied piranhas. Pretty cool. They sell some tattooed fish with designs like flowers, stars, hearts and "I love u" tattooed on them. I wonder how long those fish will last. Not sure about how that is done but I don't think tattooing a fish is going to help its stress levels and longevity. They have many invertebrates, corals, live rock and aquariums for sale. In the back they have huge Koi "ponds" where you can pay 25 cents for a handful of Koi pellets to feed them. Although the salt water selection is pretty varied and includes; Ocellaris & Maroon Clown Fish, Yellow Tailed Damsels, Cardinals, Azure Damsels (with the yellow belly, blue backs), Three Spot Domino Black Damsels, Blue Velvet Damsels, Eels, Angels, etc., none of their fish come with any health guarantee. You might be able to get store credit but refunds are not allowed. Sadly every fish I purchased for my nephew's tank died within 3 days of purchase. I cautioned him but he wanted the fish anyway. My LFS doesn't sell damsels so my nephew decided to come here. Luckily we put them into an established quarantine tank, so whatever they may have been sick or infected with, did not affect the main tank. The staff will tell you that you need to have your water tested etc etc etc....but we tested the water for Ammonia, Nitrates, Nitrites and PH. Temp was 77F. The ammonia, nitrates and nitrites were at the lowest possible ranges and the PH was at 8.3. Anyone who has experience in saltwater aquariums knows these are acceptable ranges. If you have to kill time while waiting for your Egg Roll order, this is the place to go, but I wouldn't buy anything. read more
