Konig Ludwig Biergarten is where we had lunch. It was at Helen Square where we also went to the Windmill, the Dutch store. No other reason than it is conveniently close and on the same street level. I asked about how to order the board written special. Kind of unintelligible "at the bar"...ok. the special is a 10" long corn dog with a bag of salty, crunchy potato chips. I also ordered an $11+ pretzel with cheese dip. Sprite rather than a stein of beer. The ordering process is slow, and I didn't get a receipt. I just know that it is around $30. They call my name when it is ready to be picked up from the bar. Lucky me that the guy saw me struggling to get off the picnic bench seat and brought over our order. Muhh...corn dog corn meal dough is not fully cooked, making for a bland hot dog inside. The pretzel was better. A musician was setting up. There is going to be some entertainment. We didn't wait. This is a cool beer garden right near the center of downtown Helen. The area is a hub of local shops with outdoor seating for the beer garden towards the center of the area. You can walk up and order your drinks and then have a seat. There are servers that check on you and they have a food menu as well. We didn't partake in food this time since we had eaten a large lunch earlier and were still full. We came by on a chilly night after most of the crowds of the day had dispersed so we could find a spot with some distance from others (during COVID.) We opted to order some German style beers in their large souvenir mugs. Figured we might as well embrace the tourist experience, plus refills are discounted after you purchase the cups which hold a lot. We had two rounds before we got a bit too chilly to sit outside any longer. Some portable heaters would be an awesome addition to this cool spot. I'd stopped by this place previously a long time ago during Oktoberfest which was also a blast. Security/waiter staff was aggressive and started assaulting their guests at closing for no reason. Would not go back, their staff doesn't know how to deal with people who have been drinking. They instigated a fight instead of just walking away and letting people walk away. A guy got punched in the face by staff for no reason. read more

We came with kids but advise of you want the experience and want to drink, do not bring kids. There are shops all around and music is loud. We came to Helen this past Sunday(9/1/13) for some hiking and relaxing. We got into town around noon and were told that our hotel room wouldn't be ready until 3. We weren't dressed for hiking and didn't want to change in the car so we decided to walk around and drink beer instead. First stop, King Ludwig's Beer Garden. This is just a little open cabana looking place with a bar all the way around it with plenty of picnic tables to enjoy your beer. Apparently the place doesnt open until 12:30 on Sunday's(odd time) as the guy behind the bar yelled "5 more minutes!!!" at me as I tried to order. So I waited until they rang their little bell only to be cut in front of by a hillbilly woman wanting her Bud Light. Really Bud Light at a German style Biergarten??? This should not be allowed but alas the tourist wouldn't allow for it. We each got a Paulaner Oktoberfest and sat at the bar and enjoyed the nice weather and music......ok not the music so much. It was terrible! Luckily a few minutes later a guy walks up with a guitar to play some music. I thought we were in for a treat but he was worse. He was all tatted up looking like he was ready to rock then he plays a freaking Katie Perry song. WTF!?!?! That made us chug the beer a little faster and head to the next stop. Cool little place with 10-12 beers on tap. They have some food items as well that were more on the german sausage side of the spectrum. Great for outdoor seating if the music isn't on. Maybe if you drink enough it sounds better. Maybe. Oh and there are stop signs that say "STOP: No Alcohol beyond this point" at the exits. Yet they give you your beer in plastic to go cups. Tony and I was in Helen, Ga on Saturday April 5, 2014 and we enjoyed the Bier Garden at King Ludwig's which is located in the front part of Helen Square. They were playing loud music, country not German Oompa but it was good music. There is one opening where they were asking for ID, but the other opening was wide open so No one was being stopped or showing ID..children were running around in the Bier garden..NO my liking...but hey these tourist are on vacation, drinking, dancing playing corn hole and NOT WATCHING their kids...lol !!!! Tony ordered a King Ludwig Dunkel dark bier...he liked it a lot..but he said the Warsheimer Dunkel he had upstairs was much better to his taste buds. He paid $5 with tip and taxes. Helen Georgia is an adventure unlike any other! Live music and a beer garden makes a perfect place for a slightly touristy family outing. You'll feel like you're in the Alps - or at least a homey Epcot imitation. Try tasty beers - I recommend the Octoberfest and Warsteiner Dunkel. We are about to dig into the sausage plate, wings, and definitely some beer cheese. There's nearby tubing and ziplining - or for the really adventurous- a hike to the waterfall in the Chatahoochee forest. read more

We only spent 2 days in Helen and wound up here twice! The vibe is very chill, and the beer is good. They have a lot of non German beers but you can get some German ones too, and the price is right for the beer. There's live music a lot which is really nice, and the courtyard is a great spot to chill. We got sausage and their warm potato salad/sauerkraut which was pretty good! There's a lot to eat in Helen but this was a good chill spot for something quicker and not as fancy. read more

Beer selection- 2 on tap Oktoberfest brews the day we attended. We also ordered a plate with 1 brat, 1 cheddarwurst, sauerkraut, and German potato salad. The plate was around 14.70 if I remember correctly. The potato salad is made with fake salad style red dye bacon bits, so you know. The live music was nice. Here's another point, granted I know this is a touristy town etc. we ordered our food/ drinks at the bar. When processing you get to select an 18, 20, or 22% tip to add. They brought out plate of food, never checked on us otherwise. Just saying our bill, with tip, 2 beers 1 plate was around $43. Food rating for me would be a 1.5-2 at best.
