Kingfisher has an excellent vibe, especially when you're looking to catch up with friends and want to go out and be social, but not in an overcrowded place or pretentious and overly fancy bar. The bartenders (shout out to Sam) are always super friendly and attentive! Plus they genuinely make an effort to meet their patrons and remember their names, which makes me feels nice and better than being another nameless customer at basic bar. The beer selection (cans only, no draft) is good, the cocktails are yummy too! My friends love getting the mystery shots. Getting free popcorn is also awesome - pro tip: add garlic powder and parmesan! I almost want to tell you not to go to Kingfisher because I like it so much and want to keep it my little secret...but that would be a disservice to Kingfisher. read more

Super chill basement bar, which I would recommend and revisit. We went for Geeks Who Drink trivia last night and got $3 beers for happy hour and free popcorn. Beer selection was wide enough. Staff were very friendly and yes, I did see them allowing outside food. Futurama was on TV. Came in randomly after having drinks down the street. Very cool vibe. Super chill. The bartenders were cool. You get popcorn immediately (the salt makes you want to drink more). When we came they have Friday the 13th playing in the tv. The whole crowd was into the movie. Yelling, laughing, making crazy comments. It was so fun. I definitely appreciate this addition to the neighborhood... As a person that considers popcorn & wine a legitimate category of meals (this was PRE-Olivia Pope, people) I am thrilled that I can indulge both loves here at Kingfisher. The cans of wine equal two full pours of wine, so it's an especially good deal during happy hour, when the Underwood Pinot Noir is $8 and the rosé option (which is slightly effervescent) is $6. Actually had a great time, but do need to note a little ridiculousness of Service. Politely asked the bartender if there was a possibility to charge my phone (to obtain a safe ride home via Lyft). She first stated that there was a charger at my table ( actually just an outlet). Then obliged to charge my phone behind here's bar. When I returned to retrieve my phone, she asked if we had tipped to which I replied, yes, and gave a 21% tip. She stated (completely seriously) "that's standard, I will give twenty percent to my bar back and keep two percent for myself." Then continues to talk to the bar back as she looked at us when we walked away. Weirdest shit ever especially when you only serve canned beer. read more

There are few truly "neighborhood" bars on 14th street, but this one's an instant classic. Fantastic, friendly bartenders. Great happy hour drinks, great relaxed atmosphere --the type of place that becomes the default hangout or meet-up spot. If you love Jackpot in Chinatown, this is it's charming little brother. Craft cocktails and solid beer list (beer and wine only available in cans). Having cans give them the ability to get beers from all over the US and change up more frequently. Staff is super friendly and knowledgeable about what they are serving and how to mix a proper cocktail. Jukebox is not too loud and playing accessible tunes. TV's are going to have a weird mix of stuff (we watched 2 kung fu movies that were so bad they were hilarious). Bar is gorgeous (made from reclaimed wood) and some rescued church pews serve as additional seating areas. Great place to just hang out with friends. read more

I've been here a few times now, and have really enjoyed my experience each time. Happy hour until 8 every day - yes, including weekends - is a great perk, and they have a good selection of canned beers served in a koozie. From what I was told, they're also going to start doing hot drinks (hot toddies etc.) soon - looking forward to that with the weather changing. Definitely a fan of the free popcorn and assorted toppings they provide as well. Overall, it's relaxed and very casual, which is a nice change of pace from much of 14th street. Lovely and clean space that is really attractive for a basement bar, friendly bartenders, and fun/so-bad-they're-good movies playing in the background make it feel very welcoming. Happy hour drinks are basic but they have a $3 pils & some decent wine on the happy hour menu (from $6 to $10) as long as you aren't afraid of drinking wine from a can! I really dig this place. There's enough light to play one of their boardgames, but dark enough to fade into the background. Really awesome canned beer list; not your typical drinks. Ours were served with a cuzi, which was super cute and practical. My friend enjoyed her canned wine too - it was basically two glasses in each can.
