My family has gone here since not long after he took over this practice. Initially was happy. I was bombarded then with prompts to rate this practice highly (some website that wasn't Yelp). Sure. And while I was doing that, I added my original review here. Of note, I've never had many dental problems, so I didn't have much to base that initial impression on, although on a recent visit he suddenly suggested a lot of expensive gum work (that I am opting to wait on). Since my first review, I think he's on his third hygienist and the website's description makes me think the one working there now is yet again different, so maybe on #4. That's a little worrisome. One positive is that they've always run pretty close to on time. My biggest beef is that I originally selected this dentist because, according to our insurance plan's preferred provider list, the former dentist took was listed. I called Shimp's office and was assured that I'd be covered because they were working on getting enrolled on the plan, too. It wasn't until later that I realized that they never enrolled. Preventive care is covered by insurance regardless, so it wasn't until a family member had to pay big out of pocket cost that I realized I'd been misled. I mentioned this and didn't get as much as an apology. Also, on my last visit, the billing person told me we had overpaid and that they'd send us a refund for that amount, but they never did. Too bad, because I thought this place was promising, but I'm looking for a new dentist now. read more

Like many reviewers here, I agree Dr Henderson was awful and probably a scammer. I ended up going in for a deep cleaning - had to be done separately for each side of my mouth because according to Dr Henderson, insurance wouldn't cover it if he did it all at once. The first side of my mouth was done by a hygienist who is no longer there. She took about 90 minutes to numb me and thoroughly clean my teeth. I went back and Dr Henderson did the other side and it was an absolute JOKE. He spent about 12 minutes doing what took the previous hygienist 90 minutes. Should have been a red flag, but I continued to return and was told I had multiple cavities on each side of my mouth and needed to come back 3-4 times for fillings. At one appointment Dr Henderson literally drilled all my upper right molars and filled them terribly, it feels like a flat surface in my mouth. I should have learned my lesson and never returned, but when I went in for my "last filling", I learned Dr Henderson was no longer working there and it was actually Dr Shimp's first day. To his credit, he said he would actually look at my mouth before doing any drilling and instead of filling 4 or 5 cavities, he said I actually only needed 1. My interactions with him ever since have been positive, he even fixed a filling that Dr Henderson did a horrible hack job on. I went back for a cleaning today and was satisfied with my experience, but the whole transition from Dr Henderson to Dr Shimp was managed pretty terribly (absolutely no communication to patients as to when/why this was happening) and was extremely frustrating for me.... Especially later learning a lot of the work Dr Henderson had done was probably unnecessary and he was just pedaling patients for unnecessary services before he left (or was fired. Or arrested. Again, who knows. Terrible communication.) Hopefully they've turned over a new leaf with Dr Shimp. read more

I'm so sad to update that the practice has been bought out by new dentist Dr. Shimp. I have been in twice now and have provided my own background/history, endured uncomfortable cleanings, and left with water all over my face. He seems like a nice guy but I have not received good care yet. I dread going! read more

The office is upstairs without any ADA access. It does have a decent Lake Tahoe view but that is the only good thing I can say about this business. I spent several thousand dollars on crowns which failed almost immediately. When I asked Kings Beach Dental to fix the defective crowns, they told me they were going to charge me again for their dental work that failed. They weren't interested in standing behind their work, unlike my current dentist in Incline village. I have had to pay my new dentist to have Kings Beach Dental's inferior crowns replaced. I am suspicious of anybody that won't stand behind their previous dental work. read more

Poor communication. Kept me in the dark on the teeth he wanted to work on; did not share costs, risks or options. Performed an expensive, optional cosmetic procedure without my informed consent. Surprised me with a bill that was over $9.5K more than the treatment plan I had signed. Damaged my teeth and left me infected and in throbbing pain for 8 months; I finally went to another dentist. Refuses to compensate me for the five root canals I had to have due to the damage he caused. read more

If I am rating the previous dentist, Dr. HENDERSON I'd give a ONE STAR or less (his picture is still there).... HOWEVER, the new dentist, Dr. STEVEN SHIMP, who has taken over this practice, is without a doubt 5 STARS!!! Having received horrifically damaging and expensive work that had failed by Dr. Hendersen, I went back (a third time) to demand Dr. Henderson fix it, only to find a totally GREAT, NEW YOUNG DENTIST, who has done 3X the work since, at less than the original 5 cavities cost (this includes repairing the two that fell out and the half of tooth missing from the first guy over-drilling). Dr. Steven Shimp is super-skilled!! He fixed a chipped front tooth (I had been told couldn't be repaired by other dentists) WHILE waiting for my gums to numb for the other work. The chipped tooth is now perfect with NO sign of having been damaged...and he did it in minutes! Dr. Steven is also SUPER personable and the icing on the cake is, extremely reasonably priced...no need to travel off the hill for less expensive dentistry! He also has in-house treatments such as high-tech implants, so you don't have to be referred out, or worry about a mess of pain. Try him, you'll love him! read more

First of all, I'm the biggest chicken on the planet because the dentist I had as a child did NOT use Novocain - not that uncommon in the 1950s and early '60s. I needed a crown replaced and my regular dentist couldn't see me for quite sometime, so I called KBD and they fitted me in promptly. Unfortunately, the day of my procedure the "crown machine" which mills a crown in the office was out of order so Nick put in a temp. The same afternoon, I got a call that the machine was fixed and my crown was ready so I got it put in the very next day. The whole office demonstrates skill, kindness, compassion, and dedication to the patient experience. Thank you Dr. Shimp, Nick, Cynthia, and Karen. You were all so understanding of my dental PTSD and I couldn't be more grateful or recommend this practice more! read more

His staff even offered to hang out with my one year old when I didn't have childcare for a last minute appointment. They have completely restored my confidence in dentists! I was just seen here for an emergency filling repair. I called 5 dentists in Truckee, none of which would take me. Kings Beach took me last minute, right before the holiday, and gave me a temporary filling repair until I can get back in next week. Dr. Jason was kind and his staff professional. Like many folks here, my experience with Henderson, after about a half dozen visits, is that he uses his medical expertise to trick people into procedures they do not need. Shame on you Henderson. I got a root canal and crown replacement that, in hindsight, probably was not needed. And when I came in for a standard check-up, he started setting up appointments for deep cleaning procedures, something that i did not ask for, in fact its used for treating periodontal diseases.... I was fooled by the nice professional demeanor, don't let it happen to you. My experience with Dr. Henderson was nothing short of horrific. On the smaller side of issues, over the course of my 4 appointments he magically found new fillings that he did not mention before at every appointment. I went to a new dentist within a month of getting a cleaning from Dr. Henderson, and my dentist asked when the last time I had gotten a cleaning was and did not believe me when I told them I had one within the month. My largest issue with Henderson was that I was told I needed a crown on my tooth (the tooth had no pain so I was surprised). I had 4 appointments to carry this out, Henderson going as far to say he would ask the lab to "rush" making my crown so I could have it sooner. After the appointments and getting the crown I began to have extreme pain in the tooth. I went to a new dentist, and they informed me that THERE WAS NO CROWN ON MY TOOTH, just an extremely deep filling. My new dentist was horrified. I went back and looked at my insurance to make sure I had not somehow misinterpreted him, sure enough he charged me for a crown. Going back and looking at my insurance I also uncovered that he charges for things "he is not allowed to" (that is what my insurance said) and double charges for things. Dr. Henderson is not only a terrible dentist, but also an immoral and terrible person. read more

I had a great experience at Kings Beach Dental. The receptionists were very sweet. I ended up waiting about 25 minutes, but the receptionists apologized and said the hygienist was worth the wait and that I would love her. The hygienist, Teresa, also apologized when I got in the room. I appreciated that. As a patient, you know they're busy--and busy is good. It just made a real difference that they acknowledged my waiting. Teresa did a great, incredibly thorough job with the cleaning. Honest to God, she periodically rubbed lotion over my lips throughout the cleaning so they wouldn't get too dry. I couldn't believe it. Very, very kind and asked me many times if I was comfortable, felt any pain, etc. Dr. Shimp examined me, which didn't take very long, but he seemed very kind. Going in to have a few fillings replace tomorrow, so we'll see.... Overall, very nice experience as a new patient. Highly recommend. read more

Scam artist. STAY AWAY from Dr. Henderson. I went to his office despite his unusual amount of 1 star ratings because it was so close to where I live. I now see he did to me what so many others have said - brought me in multiple times unnecessarily, drilled my tooth for a crown I didn't need, told me AFTER the procedure how much it costs. Wasn't given the breakdown of what was covered by insurance or not (and found out from another dentist by running it through insurance correctly that he did, in fact, scam me and the procedure was unnecessary). After looking at more of his reviews from his old office in San Jose (Henderson Dental) and webmd, I see I am not alone. I feel violated and disheartened. Will be reporting him. read more

I don't have a local dentist and I was worked into the schedule on very short notice, the next day. Starting with my first phone call, Ashland at the other end was welcoming and understanding of the importance of why I was calling. An appointment time was found and help with getting x-rays from my dentist emailed to the office. Dr Henderson was clear in his diagnosis and I was given multiple treatment options. I was just given the facts and got no pressure to choose one over the other even though it would have made some financial difference to his practice. Absolute scammer! The "teeth cleaning" was maybe 5 seconds. Worst cleaning I've ever had at a dentist. He then tried to tell me I had 3 cavities all on one side of my mouth. He said he would try to fill them all in one appointment, but that he could only numb one side of my mouth at a time, so if I was in too much pain, I'd need to come in two sessions. To that, I said, "Didn't you just say all three were on the same side of my mouth?" To which he replied, "Well, actually, there are 4, and one of them is on the other side." The whole thing felt very, very off to me. After going to another dentist, it turns out I have 0 cavities. This guy is a scammer and should be in prison. These good reviews seem off to me too. Had an emergency tooth issue on my way up to Tahoe. Kings Beach Dental was able to see me right before they closed to identify next steps, and the following morning was able to stabilize the issue issue and relieve me of my pain so I could enjoy the rest of my vacation. Dr. Jason was courteous and friendly, and his staff has been awesome in spite of my continuously calling them to have referrals and xrays emailed to various other offices. Their billing mistake has cost me my credit score, and I am not alone. They will tell you your dental work is covered by your insurance, then months later (without receiving an invoice) you will hear from their debt collectors. I tried to contact the dentist to sort out what I presumed was a misunderstanding, however they won't communicate and refer me to their debt collector. I was forced to pay an unfair bill to get my credit score back. They either have incompetent staff or are deliberately dishonest. I requested a phone call with the dentist to discuss this numerous times to no avail. Don't be fooled by the two yelp listings, they're the same dental practise which is under new ownership (the previous owner was reputable and professional and the new owner has inherited the former owners positive reviews). read more
