Advertised "entertainment " - 1 decent young lady sing self accompany on guitar with amp turned up way too high. Filthy bathroom. Sketchy ambiance. Basket of "whipped spread " of unknown origin, wet wipes and creamer contained open spread and 3 creamer containers with filthy substance all around sides. I'm a pretty generous guy when it comes to reviews, but this place absolutely exploited us for every penny. Not to forget to mention that the place was dirty and the chair I was sitting on was leaning forward and on the verge of breaking. My girlfriend and I only got one bowl of gumbo to split because we heard so much about it and we wanted to try everything Beale had to offer. Although it was tasty and we absolutely cleaned the plate, we were charged 30 dollars for "bottled waters" and a bowl of gumbo. We only got tap water yet we were still charged for it. I would've gave our server "Nate" a good tip because he was buttering us up and making us feel special but as soon as he left the check, he completely ignored us. The bowl of gumbo was supposed to be to be 20 dollars but with the "bottled waters" and his generous rounding to the nearest tenth, it was 30 bucks... The gumbo was good but if you really want to try it, place a carry out order and skip the service. They'll take a mile if you offer them an inch. read more

If you trying to figure what place to eat on Beale street stop and give this place a look! The live music and sticker saying they have award winning gumbo brought me in. I can definitely say this place lived up to the hype and belongs on Beale street! I got a small cup of gumbo and the bbq plate. You have to try the gumbo and I can see why it is award winning! First let me say that Beale Street is a blast. Lots of restaurants/bars and good people. Everyone is so friendly.

Food was not good and way overpriced and the service was worse. Out of all the places to eat on Beale don't go here!

I think of Kings Palace the whole time I'm in San Francisco. I love it . I try to make it my first stop in Memphis. This time I made it twice. I go for the fried green tomatoes and everything else about the place. I still remember the old guy playing the sax in front of the door. There is music maybe 5 nights a week . Also the best service I have had in Memphis all days of the week. I came the second time with a friend and had their ribs . I wish I had them now delicious. Our first time. Our server (pregnant) was wonderful, pleasant and very attentive. She was the only server, handling 6 tables and still with a great attitude. My fried green tomatoes were excellent. Our first time to Memphis was amazing. The people are wonderful but on Wednesday night, after walking on Beale Street, we got hungry. My husband suggested we stop at Kings Palace Cafe. It was closed, but Drikka made an exception. The best decision the gumbo was delicious. I ordered a chicken salad, and the chicken was grilled so delicious, and Drikka was so pleasant and helpful. Walked in to order some food to go and it was pretty much empty. Ordered gumbo and Voodoo chicken. First bite or gumbo is great. I really didn't expect it to be this good. Not overly hot but good. Voodoo chicken is good and it is not hot at all. Vegetables are well cooked. Potatoes are good, but I would like more chicken than potatoes. All in all it was good. Wanted chicken and waffles on a Sunday morning. This is one of the few places we found open on Sunday morning with chicken and waffles on Beale St. The food was great (also had grits that were awesome. Extremely friendly staff. It was a Tuesday, 28-degrees on a mostly-deserted Beale Street but we were on a mission--get some gumbo before we left Memphis. We had the place to ourselves but that did not dampen the spirit of the young lady and the chef who took care of us. I learned the difference between Étouffée and Gumbo. Not only is the food delicious, but the live band is enjoyable. The Poboy was delicious. The bread wasn't crunchy but really soft. The fish was so good with the right amount of toppings and condiments. The fries are addicting! The gumbo had good flavor, I just wasn't onboard with the hard pieces of food. I believe it may have came from chicken or sausage. The ribs were good just a little too chewy for my taste. Other than that, I will be back for more. read more

This was a horrible experience for coming to Beale Street. Food was honestly not what was expected. I entered the restaurant with a high expectation, however i should have expected worse when the atmosphere consisted of NO people and the place was empty. The lady that served us seemed high on drugs and she seemed confused when I asked for ranch? Thought that sauce was a universal thing but okay... My friend ordered french toast and the menu said it came with potatoes. I ordered the chicken and waffles and it also said it came with potatoes. After ordering our meal, my plate looked really good and I was ready to dig in, however, the waffles were COLD, UNCRISPY, and DRY. My friend's french toast was just four pieces of bread and it had NO potatoes. None. Ridiculous. When we told the lady that the order was not as written, she was shaking her head and then quoted, "I want to kill someone"... So to come to conclusion this place was not worth the order and my friend who ordered the toast only paid for a little over half of her meal because of the missing potatoes. Not worth it. We were walking past this place and stopped for a second to see if the band was good. The band's lead singer called us in "Hey you guys in the back, come in, have a beer, free show!" So we did. We sat down and didn't even have time to get a drink yet when the lead singer came to our table and asked us directly for a tip. I waved and said "we're good for now" He said "what do you mean you're good? It's a FREE show, at least tip the band." I said "Well then it's not free is it? We haven't even heard any music yet" He got upset and went to the next table. He approached every table with the tip jar and asked for money. We left after 1 beer because the whole time he was calling us out for not tipping, even stopping mid-song to harass us for not tipping. He just kept pointing at us and saying "these two aren't tipping the band". The funny thing is I'm always one to tip the band, but you have to actually play music and be a nice person. He told the whole restaurant to boo us on the way out because we didn't tip the band. Crazy stuff. It was our first time to Beale Street. We just wanted some beer and blues, but this experience was extremely uncomfortable. It wasn't too crowded, think I'll chill here for awhile. Then he turned the synthesizer on bongos & some weird island-type sounds & proceeded to promote his CD. Memphis-Style BBQ Ribs:: Hickory wood smoked Ribs cooked in traditional Memphis style, wet or dry. Half Rack $19 / Full Rack $25 / That was as far down the Menu as I needed to read! It was odd that the serving of Potatoes was piled high, a huge portion, while the Slaw was served in a tiny Catsup cup? The Ribs had been cooked earlier in the day & sat under the warmer too long. At first they were OK, but after 20 minutes tasted dry & chewy. I liked the Sauce that was served on the side. The Timing of Ribs must be precise. I have judged many Memphis in May BBQ Contests & listened to the narrative describing the cooking method. Teams put on several racks @ 30-minute intervals so they can select the ones that are prime to serve to the Judges. Unfortunately, Restaurants cannot predict the volume of Diners who will order Ribs each day or night. Such is the saga of "Mine were mouthwatering!" vs. "Mine were overcooked & dry." & The temptation to serve the oldest ones 1st is great. read more

Great place, live music, Waitress was really nice.. BUT. The band... on Thursday the 13th afternoon. They are good... BUT. The front man was being really obnoxious. He would not stop harassing us for tips. In front of everyone! He asked the first time because I was filming for like 10 sec and said filming isn't allowed without tip. I get it. So then I tip $5. He then asks what song we want, we tell him... he doesn't play it. Then I try filming again since the first clip was ruined by his request for money, he then says $5 isnt enough to film them!! In front of everyone he continues to hassle us. We are PAYING customers, we should be allowed to film the establishment and band. I was one of 3 people who tipped, out of 15 people! We would have stayed longer, but felt harassed and uncomfortable. So we left after 1 beer. We were walking Beale Street and decided to stop in. There was a BB Kingesque guy playing electric guitar and singing popular songs accompanied by a recorded bass line and drum machine. The ambiance was good and relaxed. The air conditioning was great on a hot night. The "Championship" gumbo was very good. The Memphis hot wings were mildly spicy and served Chinese style intact from drum to flat to wingtip. The dipping sauce was unique-- similar to ranch, and it was good. Everyone, from child to adult, LOVED the dry ribs. They had a sweet, crispy, outer rind and were tender inside. Perfectly cooked and executed. I've had ribs everywhere in the world, and maybe these were the best. The fried green tomatoes were good. The red sangria was bad. Very bad. Stick with the cold beer. I think I'll remember this meal with my wife and kids for a long time. read more

If the chefs here were truly cooking for kings, they'd find themselves in the dungeon awaiting be heading. The food was inconsistent. While the catfish was flavorful and well cooked, the rice was ice cold. The etouffee seemed to have been left in a microwave for way too long and scorched my mouth. This was the most flavorful dish I was served, and after adding the cold rice, it was still too hot, but the taste started coming through. The chicken Cajun pasta was hot in spots, cold in others. The chicken was tender and good. The cream sauce was watery and lacked flavor:bland. Then there was some sort of chicken with a Benedict type sauce, served over potatoes. Awful. If it weren't for the excellent service, atmosphere and music afterward in the courtyard, I'd say stay away. Danielle made the experience pleasant and the leftovers were appreciated by the homeless.
