John explained that the tire delivery would be in the early afternoon. He sensed that we were anxious. He got into his car and went over and picked up the tires. He ordered the car to be put on the rack and prepared. He was back in 15 minutes, and the tires were installed immediately. We were on our way in less than two hours. Excellent. This is something I've had fixed before by simply replacing a faulty slave or master cylinder. I let them know this while describing the issue. After saying this was most likely the issue, I was asked if the clutch had been replaced. Later I got a call back and they said that I was getting good pressure with the cylinders and that wasn't the issue. Instead that I was going to have to get the clutch replaced. I walked back up there and paid the $150 "diagnosis" fee that increased to $187 upon payment, citing taxes but not mentioning the $15 fees added. I told them I was going to get another opinion. A mechanic I know that changed the cylinder last time took the air filter off and checked the slave cylinder and showed me that fluid was leaking out very noticeably. Steve's hadn't bothered to even check the cylinders or they would have seen fluid leaking out. I'm guessing they just took it into the bay and pushed the clutch and decided I need a whole new clutch. My friend mechanic ordered a $60 part, the faulty slave cylinder, and the car is back running just like it was before. So Steve's got my $187, but not another cent from me. I hope it was worth it for them to get a small amount from me on the short end instead of a trusted customer in the long run. Avoid these crooks!

They will overcharge you for parts, labor, and fail to execute agreed upon repairs. About 3 months ago my brakes seized on my car. I brought it here, since the other shop in town is notoriously bad at communication. They called a few hours after dropping my car off, and let me know I needed an entire brake replacement. Cost was over $2k. Ok fine - I needed my car back soon and didn't have time to get other estimates. They replaced all 4 brakes, pads, and rotors. I got the car back after a few days, and noticed a loud clicking sound that was consistent with the wheel speed. Brought the car back in - they said they found a burr on one of the rotors so they resurfaced it. I got the car back, and there was still a loud clicking. Brought it back a third time now and they had it for a few days "diagnosing" it. They told me they took the brakes off and put everything back together and couldn't find the issue. One of the mechanics told me it was because my car has rust (makes no sense since the clicking was in rhythm with the wheel speed). Picked it back up, and decided that weekend to find the issue myself with a buddy. Took us an hour - a tension clip on the calipers was completely misshapen causing the pad to move within the caliper. Had they actually tried to diagnose the issue and take the brakes off they would have noticed that this tension clip wasn't tensioning anything - it was loosely fit into the caliper. Ended being an $8 fix with a new clip from Autozone. A month or so later, brought my wife's car in for a failed AC. They had the car a few days, and diagnosed a failed actuator. Charged us $1k in labor and parts to fix it. Picked the car up, and a few days later the system failed again. Brought the car back, and after 3 more days was told by Eric it's the AC compressor and it'd be another $2k to fix it. I let them know I needed to get other estimates - I had just spent $1k there for it to get fixed so to be charged another $2k was ridiculous. They sent me an invoice estimate for parts and labor. The AC compressor kit they quoted from Napa was $799. I found it on Napa's site for $450ish. Called and let them know that I found the parts cheaper, I'd buy the parts and bring the car in for the service. Eric told me no problem. Received the parts this week and tried to set up an appointment with Eric. Eric said to just bring it in. I called yesterday and spoke to Eric again. knowing it's a holiday weekend, I asked if he could get to it today 5/22. He told me to get in in early and they'd do it. The night of 5/21 I dropped the car off with all the parts in the trunk so they'd have it first thing. My wife called today 5/22 in the morning to make sure they had everything and would do the repair Eric said not to worry they'd get to it today. Called back at 430 or so, and we were told they hadn't even started it. We went to pick it up and spoke to Tim and the lady at the front desk. I asked what happened, and he said Eric was supposed to call with a labor quote (which Eric had already provided to me in writing) and he never did so. So instead of calling and telling us the labor, or telling us they can't get to it today or whatever, they left us hanging with a car with no AC. Picked up the car and there was ZERO effort from Tim or the lady at the front to try and retain our business. No effort to make an appointment for us to have it fixed, or to try and correct the situation. They've already taken over $3k of business from us, so I guess lesson learned. DO NOT come here. I have zero confidence in their technicians and their lack of communication will leave you hanging as it has us several times now.

So they called Raleigh to see if they had my tire and could replace it for me. keep in mind I am a woman and I had my 3 year old son with me so I'm sure this is a classic case of them taking advantage of the fact that I'm a woman who doesn't know much. Anyways I go to get this tire already almost in tears and the older gentleman at the front desk was just blatantly rude to me the entire time. Told me how much it would cost and sent me on my way. when he told me the price it seemed good considering the tire I had on my car is a grappler and they're decently expensive. An hour passes and they're call and tell me I can pick it up. when I get there the tire that is on my car is an entirely different tire,not even the same tread and costs 92$ regularly buy I see on my receipt that I was charged 198$ just for that one tire. All the man had to tell me is that it wasn't the right tire but atleast it would get me from point A to B. I will never ever recommend or do business with this place ever again and if you do make sure you are smarter than me and get an estimate and see what you are paying for first.

I've now bought tires for two different vehicles and stopped in for rotations, balances, and "...something doesn't feel right" visits. My resounding 5 Star Rating (which I VERY RARELY give) is for a few different reasons. 1.) The advice is always founded upon reasonable and logical decision making born of experience. It seems every time I did business with chains and factory stores I sensed that the diagnosis and advice was influenced on a need to hit corporate revenue goals. No matter who I spoke with at Performance (Syd the Owner, Sam his son, or the guys in the shop - sorry don't know their names), the diagnosis and advice was as straight as you'd get from your best friend. It's more than simple honesty or integrity; it's...just the way you want to be dealt with. 2.) I shopped PT's prices both times I was buying new. The prices were always competitive. Though I'd possibly pay an extra $40 to $100 versus chains and factory stores due to my positive experiences, it would rub against my thrifty (cheap-skate) instincts. The first time I visited the price given to me was about $40 or $50 more than the same 4 tires at Sam's. I asked Sam, "...convince me why I should buy here." I don't remember exactly what he said, though I'm sure it included "free rotation/balance and other stuff", but what sealed the deal in my mind essentially, "we'll take care of you if there's a problem". 3.) To my pleasant surprise they can get what ever tire I've asked for at a good price and (so far) the same day. Because I'm not stuck on one brand and research CR, Car & Driver, Tire Rack and other sites, I usually desire only one or two tires over all other choices. Even though in both of my cases PT didn't have my preferred tire 'in house', they confirmed the positives/negatives about my selection and were able to get it at a price comparable to others. My only complaint with Performance Tire is they close too early on Saturday (noon) and are closed Sundays; the two days when I've needed emergency service.

The rental car had given me a dud of a car with a bad tire valve. But at this point, I didn't know if it was a nail or otherwise. With the right rear tire nearly depleted, desperately bailing off I-40, I found Macon Discount Tire who took me in when other tire shops were too busy. With every bay full, they quickly removed the tire right there in the parking lot and found the faulty valve. They patched me up for a mere $15 and sent me on my way. It definitely would not have been a fun road trip had I been stuck on the interstate in Memphis with a flat tire. I couldn't help but notice that several other motorists stopped by while I waited, bringing their emergency tire issues to this beacon in the night happy to help drivers with minor issues without requiring an appointment. They've earned my respect and admiration. But I must give a shoutout to the employee at Firestone across the interstate, a tall and well-spoken gentleman reminiscent of a young Denzel Washington. Realizing his store was overloaded with one guy working on three cars, kindly not wanting to leave me stranded in Memphis, he started calling around and found Macon Tire for me. They told him to send me over. I'm glad there are still wonderful and kind people in this world.
