So quaint and unpretentious. We stopped here for lunch on our way to Killington. The bartender was friendly and attentive. My husband had a bowl of their 6 hour chili with sour cream on top. He also had a beer that is not so easy to find in our native CT called Uncanny by Burlington Beer Company. Which he called a 'juice-bomb' with a helping of super hoppiness. My husband and I were visiting Brattleboro on our recent trip to New England and had planned to go to another pub but it was closed that day. We decided we'd just grab a small bite to eat before heading back to where we were staying in MA so we ended up at Kipling's, probably the only place open at 2:30pm on a weekday. We decided to order the chili cheese fries. Being from Texas, we're pretty picky about chili and such, but the chili had really good flavor, very meaty with spices and beans. There was also a lot of cheese. You definitely get your money's worth for $10. We didn't have any beers as it was really hot outside and Kipling's is not air-conditioned (or the A/C was broken the day we went) so we just wanted to stick with water. The bartender/server was very nice, and my husband and I enjoyed overhearing the conversation between him and a patron about the '86 World Series between the Mets and the Red Sox. Then the conversation went to hockey and we were lost. Kipling's is cash only so be prepared! Should we find ourselves in Brattleboro we'd definitely go back to try other menu items and beers. read more

This is my favorite pub! A great combination of a good bar and excellent food. The atmosphere is classic Irish pub with a mix of locals and out of state visitors so there is always good conversation. This appears to be the spot the locals come to in order to get away from the earth muffin, snow boarding, beer snobs. It has the usual pub fare for a good price. Stopped in for lunch on our way through town. Hubby and I both got the Hemmingway burger with fries( which were extra, but worth it). Burgers were very tasty and fries nice and crispy. Place was very clean and people were super friendly. Just note its a cash only establishment. read more

Had some wings that were ok, but the fish and chips tasted like they'd just come out of the Connecticut river and not in a good way. The chili maybe came out of the river too ... oof. Came here while in town for a weekend getaway. I can't help but assume that the reason for all the good reviews is due to locals not traveling much outside of this area for other food because I can't fathom how it's got a 4 star rating. This food is mediocre at best. Very generic and very bland. The restaurant needs an update inside, although it is kept relatively clean. We ordered the hot wings to start. Frank's buffalo sauce on some scrawny wings. And then the chili burger and Hemingway burger. Both unseasoned and just very very average. I wouldn't stop in here again. read more

My bf and I were in town going for a dinner and a movie and we happened to fall upon this place on the way out of the parking garage. My first impression of the place was that it seemed like a hole in the wall... It isn't the most inviting-looking bar in town, but as soon as I took a bite of their chili cheese burger I was sold. I've never had such a tasty burger, and the taste of the chili was really the perfect blend of spice, peppers and bean. My bf had the bacon burger and obviously I had to take a bite out of his sandwich because that's what good girlfriends do!! - It was delicious! I think they have a knack for making a hit-the-spot kind of meal. Definitely worthy of 5 stars. The one thing I will say is that the booths are a bit impersonal and uncomfortable, but other than that just a really nice place to go, especially if you're on the go or even if you want to chat it up for hours in the their booths or the bar. read more

Had to come in here because McNeill's wasn't open yet. Had never been in before and while I won't go back, I was impressed with the beer selection and thought it was okay. The staff definitely favors regulars and the regulars are definitely there in full force. Unfortunately, they're not my type of regulars... of course I'm basing this on one experience. Kips is one of my favorite places for lunch, because the service is fast and the food is delicous, and they always have great beer and wine available. The wireless is also really fast!! I frequent this bar at night, but during the day its a great spot for a burger or sandwhich...also the best reuben in town! read more

I wasn't a big fan when I first went, but after living in brattleboro for a few years I have come to the conclusion that overall, this is the best all-around pub in town. They definitely don't have the same variety of beers as, say Flat Street, but the beers they do have are tried and true staples, like Sierra Nevada Pale Ale (which is good in any season) and Sam Smith's Oatmeal Stout. Good selection of spirits, and they are not stingy with the drink orders -- a single serving of scotch here would count as a double anywhere else. The food is pretty much the best pub food in town. Although the yelp page notes fish and chips, I have to say that the burgers are this pub's strong point. The chili burger and the barbecue bacon burger are amazing; you'll demolish one in two minutes and start thinking about ordering another. The food is usually ready pretty quickly, and although it might be a wee bit pricey, I think you get what you pay for. The atmosphere is nice. It can take some time to "settle in" as the place is usually heavy on regular customers, but once you're a regular yourself everyone tends to open up. Staff is friendly, people at the bar tend to be friendly, and it's as good a place to catch up on a book while you have dinner as it is to enjoy good conversation. The only drawback is that the TV is poorly positioned for sports viewing -- if you want to catch a baseball game then Inferno or Rocky Top are far better. But only for that -- for everything else Kipling's is the best game in town. (Also very kid friendly -- I enjoy bringing my daughter here and they always accommodate us very well. Small pub with excellent service. I went in with my boyfriend and my 6 year old son on Cinco de Mayo. It was the only place we could find that wasn't over run by partiers. The staff did their best to cater to my son and made him his own "special drink" which consisted of sprite and every fruit juice they had, fruit skewers and umbrellas.We got a black and bleu burger and a cheese quesadilla. Also had the fish and chips which were awesome! Highly recommend them. Great selection of beer whiskey and scotch as well. If this pub were anywhere near my house I'd be a regular. While they tried their best to appease my son it's probably not the best place for kids if you're looking for a kids menu and grilled cheese. That said my son enjoyed it. read more

Very friendly staff, warm greeting. Small-ish menu, but everything was good. I had a reuben and substituted American for swiss. It came out just the way I like it. The fries were awesome, fresh cut! My wife and son split a fish and chips. They both liked it a lot. And we split chili fries, yummy with a hint of hot. Probably the only reason I didn't give it 5 stars is that I feel the place could use some updating, the booths were a little too cozy and the bathrooms were very small. But honestly, some people may give it 5 stars just for that reason. They had a big selection of craft beers and our waitress was very knowledgeable about them. I actually drove by initially and said the place looked like a dive. Then I looked at the reviews on Yelp and decided to give it a try. Definitely worth the effort! Will go back again! read more
