Chinese food for Christmas? Kirin was my late mother's favorite restaurant. My parents passed away 10 years ago in their 90s. December 25, 2022 ordered take out from Kirin in Berkeley while at my sister's house just off of Solano Ave. Unlike our late parents, our family likes the food hot and spicy. Large hot and sour soup came with lots of tofu, pork, green onions in a very spicy soup. Would order again. Sichuan chili shredded pork came with spicy pork, bamboo shoots, scallions in heavy sauce. One of my favorites Red curry tofu came with onions, peas, large chunks of tofu, in a red curry sauce just the way my wife like it. Another winner. Mushroom bok choy pretty ordinary must have been ordered by someone else, as not up to our spicy standards. Sichuan seafood noodle came with thick noodles, lots of huge mussels, squid, shrimp, and scallops in a delicious spicy sauce. We had turkey and all the fixings in addition to the food from Kirin. We were not the only ones with the idea of ordering Chinese food for Christmas. Two hour wait for food.

    Happy Family lunch entree.

This is one of our favorite Chinese dining establishments on our ongoing places to indulge. We've been here numerous times, and with each visit, we're pleasantly surprised with the scrumptious of our entrees. Always prepared to perfection. Service is always very attentive and courteous. We started off with the veggie soup, it was steaming HOT, the way soup should be, not lukewarm. My lunch partner (aka Hubby) had the Mandarin Beef. I had my 'usual' Happy Family. Rice and a small salad was included. As usual, there's so much food, we packed it up for dinner. On a side note, we celebrated my Father's 104th today. As always, we'll be visiting soon again. Try it, you'll love Kirin as much as we do.

Kirin is a great place to enjoy Chinese food, the interior is beautifully decorated and you have a great view of the kitchens open flames as the prepare your meal. Although they have outdoor seating we enjoy the spacious tables inside. The food is all very good and the service is friendly and attentive. Highly recommended.

The menu changes regularly, which keeps things interesting, but one thing that never changes is the consistently excellent service. One of my favorite things about this spot is how dog-friendly it is. The owner's dog is practically the co-owner of the bar and is often lounging around, adding even more personality to the experience. If you are lucky enough to meet him, just know the dog has standards. The dog only accepts meat, so do not bother offering him the tortilla from your taco. Trust me, you will be judged. Another major perk is that they allow outside food. Conveniently, there is a taco truck right next door serving some of the best carnitas tacos around, making it easy to pair great food with great drinks. Also, keep an eye on the TVs. They always seem to be playing some delightfully over-the-top late-night movie programming that inevitably sparks random conversations and plenty of laughter among the crowd. Overall, this is a fantastic neighborhood bar with a relaxed, welcoming atmosphere and a ton of personality. It can get crowded, so try to grab a spot early if you can. You'll notice plenty of regulars who come back again and again, and to me, that is always one of the best signs that a place is doing something right.

You take your foot off the gas. Club Mallard. You need to know. The interior is dark and warm and full of dead birds. Mounted, taxidermied, presiding over the room with the glassy authority of creatures who didn't expect to end up in a bar in Albany but have made their peace with it. The effect is somewhere between hunting lodge and natural history museum after hours, and it shouldn't work on San Pablo Avenue but it does, completely, the way any sufficiently committed aesthetic decision will eventually override its context. I've been once. Midweek happy hour. This is the most honest way to evaluate a bar -- no weekend crowd to inflate the energy, no event to justify the turnout, just the place and whoever shows up on a Tuesday because they want to be there. The happy hour is good. The bartender was gregarious and present and seemed to actually like the job, which sounds like a low bar until you've spent enough time on the other side of it. The regulars were friendly in the East Bay way, which is to say they talked to us without needing anything from us, offered opinions on what to drink, and went back to their conversations. There's an outdoor space for when you want sky. I've driven past since and seen it packed. I was glad. You root for a place like Club Mallard the way you root for any small enterprise that decided to be something specific in a landscape of sameness, and then just held the line.

It also happens to be somewhat of a meeting point when I'm in Oakland and another friend is in Berkeley. When I was in downtown Oakland it was only 14 minutes away. What a time. I like this bar because the drinks are good, it's affordable, all ages come here and the vibe is nice. There is a pool table downstairs and about two or three upstairs along with a mini bar. The fire place is currently keeping the bar cozy downstairs. So, I've liked Cosmopolitans for some time now and Mallard's has a Mandarin Cosmo. It is so good - it reminds me of an Orange Hi-C.

I see a lot of people ordering maybe 3-4 handrolls and sharing appetizers but I mainly focus on the handrolls. These handrolls are on average 2-3 bites for me, 2 would be a big bite. There is no discount if you order from a set so order the sets only if you truly want every item in the list. If you come for lunch, take a look at their lunch sets because it comes out to only a couple dollars more and you get cucumber and edamame as an appetizer which is enough to share amongst two people. I love that they make the sushi rice vinegary here. I enjoy most of the items that I normally would like, there isn't a bad one except sometimes the black garlic aioli on the seared albacore tastes a bit fatty to me. Otherwise everything I order from my pictures are always fresh and good. One thing I noticed for the snow crab and chives is that they do not use mayo here compared to their Oakland location. I loved the ocean trout I had in early May and sad to see it gone by the end of May, it was sweet and fresh. Hope it comes back soon, @manager, let me know! lol thanks P.S. I do have a suggestion about the timing that food comes out, one time I was there for lunch and our table specifically had large gaps between the rolls coming out. I'm talking about 15 minutes before the next set comes out while other tables get multiple things in the meantime. After 45 min, I finally said something and the staff was able to get everything else out in 5 min so the kitchen was not backed up, she said it was some kind of timer the chef sets and maybe something was wrong there. I had brought a friend so I felt really bad for him to have a bad experience with the wait time but other than that the food was great.

I've been coming here a bit more regularly, lately - more visits in the last year compared to the previous decade, in fact. Now I wonder what I was waiting for. According to the East Bay Express, Schmidt's Pub is "basically your living room, but better" - that does sum it up, except that very few of us have living rooms anything like this, with a cozy fireplace surrounded by comfy armchairs and rustic tables beside sunny windows. Not many of us have living rooms with Old Speckled Hen on tap, or populated with an entertaining parade of quirky folk and friendly dogs. If the people and dogs are not entertaining enough then pick up a copy of Calvin and Hobbes or A History of Clay Pipes (okay, I made that one up) and have a little retreat with a pint. 4/5 Green Stars for social and environmental impact, based on these factors: * Beer on tap (transported in reusable kegs) has a much lower footprint compared to bottles or cans. * Allows you to bring your own food, which is good for folk like vegans who are often more comfortable with BYO. * The snacks available at the counter could be a bit more Berkeley (or Albany)! They were mostly from big corps - Lays chips (PepsiCo) and chocolate bars from Mars. Would be nice to see a more imaginative/ethical selection. * A great community space with an inclusive atmosphere. Schmidt's is home to many groups (e.g., knitting) and provides a second family for many, some who send postcards from their trips! * Finally, we shouldn't underestimate the importance of having a place to slow down, reflect and connect with each other a little. In that respect, Schmidt's Pub is worth its weight in gold.

We stopped in early on a Friday evening and were seated right away. The space has a great, casual vibe with plenty of indoor seating and some outdoor tables for nicer weather. Our server was friendly and checked in to see if we had any questions (we didn't), and we got drinks started right away--a local beer from Faction and a Black Basil cocktail. Both came out quickly and were solid. For food, I went with one of their signature pies--the All-Star deep dish. It's loaded with bacon, meatballs, sausage, pepperoni, and cheese... and it's massive. I always go for the 12" because it easily turns into 4-5 meals (no regrets there). My wife built her own gluten-free pizza with a thin crust and really enjoyed it. One thing I appreciated: even though deep dish takes longer to cook, both pizzas came out at the same time, which isn't always easy to do. They also offer a good variety of salads, starters, and sandwiches, which all sounded great--but I was here for the pizza. Overall, great service, excellent food, and a relaxed atmosphere. Definitely a go-to spot for a casual pizza night.

I'm done with Little Star. I have been eating at LS since it opened in SF on Valencia St. Loved it…read more It was always my favorite pizza in the Bay Area. And I loved the service we got from the people who worked there. But over the past 6 months the overall quality of the pizzas has taken a dive and in the last 3 months I LITERALLY have never had a single order (out of maybe ten) go right. I've stuck with them because of the legacy, but for example I'd have the instructions for the custom pizza applied to ALL the pizzas. I'd have the instructions on the custom pizza ignored completely--and these are simple instructions. "Please do not put tomato sauce on this pizza. Thank you." I appreciate that they have a custom option--my daughter is picky. One time they got it wrong and remade my entire order while I waited for another hour. But yesterday was my last Little Star pizza. I ordered the usual, including a small Detroit style classic. They got two of the pizzas right, but when I arrived the guy at the counter just said, "Oh, we sold out of the small Detroit, check the app to see if you got the refund." How about starting with I'm sorry? I know that it's 9p and you're ordering dinner for your family and you're going to have less food than you planned for--and since this is Berkeley you aren't going to be able to get other takeout food at this time of night--or if you could you would not make it home until 10p." Anything like that would have been thoughtful. "Check your app to see if you got the refund." The order for the thing you were sold out of went through. How about call me when the system makes a mistake like this? You've got my number. Call me and ask if I'd like to get something else instead of the thing you're out of. How about recognize me as a regular customer who has patiently rolled with your errors over and over again without one complaint. How about think about the logistics of someone placing a takeout order late on a Saturday night and what their options might be. There must be a problem with the management. I thought that LS had that under control, but all things eventually come to an end.
