Immediate service. So nice and friendly. The building is older but fun. The food is simply amazing. For starters they brought hot tea and pickled vegetables to the table. The pickle was delicious and unlike others I have had before. Then they brought the dumplings in chili sauce which was listed as dim sum but the portion was large and also included cabbage. They were great. Next came my ma po tofu which may have been the best I have ever had. The valence of male and other spices was perfect. The portion was so generous (9 inch pie pan filled to the brim). Next was the chopped chicken with mixed chilies which we could not stop eating. Then came the tan tan noodles and noodles with spattered oil. Both were delicious. The valence of spice and male perfect and all the flavors well developed. I can't understand why this place is not rated as a perfect 5 stars. The food was great and the staff attentive. We were there on Saturday night and no problem getting seated. Please eat here it is a gem.

Wow, wow, wow. What an absolute delight. I haven't had a meal at this restaurant in what seems like forever, but with new ownership, Sichuan Style Restaurant on Solano Ave. is most def making a splash and name for themselves. The restaurant itself is incredibly spacious, and on a Sunday, was also very lively which is always nice to see ~ people out and enjoying themselves & their time off with family and friends over a meal. Food-wise, we ordered potstickers to start, vegetable fried rice, and sizzling black pepper beef. We also ordered a few beers, and to note, wine is also served. Everything was so delicious and even though the restaurant was crowded, that didn't interrupt with service. The potstickers were juicy and crisp, the fried rice was incredibly fresh and flavorful, and I'm still thinking about the black pepper beef. The presentation of the rice and main dish were notable (see pics) and the beef came out truly sizzling with onions, a nice char, and a sauce that was truly memorable. No wonder this spot received a mention in the Michelin Guide. There's plenty of metered parking on Solano, although may have to do a few laps pending the time of day you come. Sichuan Style also has a lunch menu, a sign outside promoting happy hour, and daily specials. The menu is so expansive, there's truly something for everyone. Would love to come back and try a few items from the dim sum menu.

I attended a large party here of ~50 people and 5 tables. Restaurant is pretty big and they reserved the entire back half of the restaurant for us. Service was really quick and they refilled our water and tea often. Highlights of our meal include: string beans and fried tofu. Parking on a Sunday afternoon is free and we found parking right outside on Solano Ave for lunch.

Chili oil chicken, sautéed veggies, and stir-fried beef. Complimentary pickled cabbage included as well.

My friend is a regular at this place and she took me here for dinner. I let her take the reins and she ordered three classic dishes that were extremely delicious with rice. We got chili oil chicken ("Sichuan mouth-watering chicken"), stir-fried beef, and sauteed water spinach (ong choy). I literally could not stop eating. Everything was so good, especially with rice. Nothing was overwhelmingly spicy or pungent, and the flavors of each dish complemented each other perfectly. Service was excellent. Our water and tea were always filled and the owner came by to say hello. I would definitely come here again for more tasty Sichuan food.

If you're looking for great Sichuan food, this is a must-visit. With dishes that are packed with flavor and that classic Sichuan numbing spice, this is the perfect place to visit for a meal that will leave you burning on the inside. All of the classic Sichuan dishes are excellent, from the pork belly in chili oil to the Sichuan boiled fish, you'll leave extremely satisfied. On top of great flavor, the portion sizes are very generous - you could honestly get two meals out of a lot of the dishes. With a clean and spacious environment, this is a fantastic place to go if you're looking for a nice night out to enjoy wonderful 'Sichuan-Style' Chinese cuisine.

Wonton's in a delicious spicy broth, and a whole bunch of of wonderful tasty delicious food!

I can't believe that this wonderful restaurant is not consistently packed. Our 2nd visit here, we came again on Tuesday August 6th after Visiting Great China on Monday Aug 4th, we were thinking that we will never go back to Great China!! My beautiful wife of 24 years is from China, and she loves spicy food with great flavor and The Sichuan Style Restaurant on Solano Ave delivers that combination. I can't do spicy like my wife & daughter, & I didn't mind at all while the waiter & my wife were laughing at me as my wife asked for a couple of dishes Not to be too spicy for me! The good here is delicious, the beef on the broccoli & beef was so tender, just like the first time we ordered a few weeks ago, the picture in this post is from their bowl of Wonton's in a spicy broth, it was delicious, this was one of the dishes they spiced it down for me, it still had a wonderful flavorful amount of spice , my wife proceeded to order other dishes that excited her, midway through her meal she said, "I'm sweating, this is so good", the inside of the restaurant is clean, & the service is excellent . Thank you yelpers that have recommended this restaurant for it's authentic taste from their province of China, the food here two times in a row was absolutely delicious, we drove about 35 minutes to get here, it was so worth it, our family will definitely come back.

I'm always on the hunt for authentic Sichuanese food, so Sichuan Style was the next on my list in the Berkeley area. My bf and I came on a weekday for an early dinner and there was no wait. The server was nice and accommodating. I absolutely love spicy food, and this place did not disappoint. Usually, I order the spicy fish filet as a baseline dish to try, and then add some other meat dishes that I'm craving. + Spicy Szechuan Water Boiled Fish: delicious - piping hot with tons of garlic/chilies/green onions on top. I'm salivating just thinking about it, to be honest. Great portion size, and quite authentic in terms of spice levels/numbing/etc. $17.95 + Hunan Stir-Fried Beef: Beef was a tad chewy in some pieces, but for the most part it was delicious and tenderized. Super spicy as well with the green chilies and also came piping hot. $18.95 +Twice cooked bacon cut pork: Classic dish, also very authentic with the sliced green onions, bean curd, and fatty pork. Delicious. $14.95 Rice per bowl $2: We ordered two bowls but as you can see in the photos she just consolidated it and gave us a whole rice bowl. You need tons of rice for these dishes, I definitely ate way too much. I haven't been this impressed by a new restaurant in a while, so I was very excited to get three authentically spicy Sichuan dishes. I had a great meal, and I will definitely be back. I will say that the food is probably much better dine-in because of the nature of the dishes. However, I had leftovers the next day for lunch, and it was still delicious. The prices are also really reasonable for the area as well.

I love this place. Super authentic dishes packed full of flavors! Great efficient service. Favorites : Ma po Tofu- 5 stars , the numbing peppercorns gives ultra awesome taste Double skin plate - 5 stars , refreshing with rainbow of vegetables Chicken wings - 4 stars , tasty Chicken with chili peppers- 4 stars , great flavors with chicken cubes but a little dry String beans- 5 stars, cooked perfectly

Quite authentic Sichuan food for the Bay Area! We got a stir fry beef dish, the Beef Noodle Soup and spicy tofu with fish. If you don't love the Sichuan peppercorn, this place is not for you since the food definitely has some heat! The restaurant is spacious and is pretty comfortable. I liked the tea that they served us. And service was quite and friendly!

Is there any discount for take out order during shelter-in-place?

I don't believe they have discounts during this time (it's still the same food and same to-go service). If anything, we should be encouraging each other to tip extra, if we have the means to do so.

By any chance, does anyone have an idea how much the Banquet Menus are? And did you like it? Thanks.

I love the food but don't know about banquets. Stop in and talk to them. They're very helpful.

It covers almost all the tastes and textures (sweet, salty, spicy, fried exterior, gooey/chewy, with a liquidy filling). Only a mad genius could have come up with this dish and it works brilliantly. The rest of our dishes vary a bit each time we go, but it's usually some spicy dishes and at least a veggie dish. Really haven't had complaints on the food. We finally made up our minds and ordered a huge spread: Spicy Chonqing Beef Noodles, Green Beans, Scallion Pancake, Salted Egg Yolk Fried Chicken Wings, Golden Crispy Pork Spare Ribs, and the Xiao Long bao. The food came out so fast! In less than 20 minutes, we had every single dish that we ordered. My favorite dish was the Salted Egg Yolk Fried Chicken. The batter was light, very crispy, and seasoned to perfection. The chicken itself was juicy, piping hot, and kept me going back for more. The mala level in the Chonqing noodle dish was very beginner friendly. If you're looking for an intense numbing sensation with a "oh gosh maybe I should slow down" type of spice, you should ask them to make it more spicy. But, it was just the right level for me to be able to enjoy everything else with it as well. I always appreciate a family style restaurant, it makes it easier for people to try new things. I have also never felt the need to publicly speak on racism in my life, but what happened here was too blatant to ignore. For context, I am a student at University of California, Berkeley and a PM at a Fortune 500 company. I say that only to make clear that I am a professional person who understands how to treat others with respect and how basic customer service should work. I came in for a pickup order and stood there attempting multiple times to get the employee's attention. She ignored me repeatedly, even looking directly in my direction without acknowledging me. Then I heard her say hello, and for a moment assumed she was finally speaking to me. Instead, she intentionally greeted and assisted a couple who had just walked in behind me. After helping them, she again looked my way and continued to avoid acknowledging me. In that moment, the treatment felt deliberate and discriminatory. When she finally addressed me, the interaction remained hostile. She appeared suspicious of whether the pickup order was actually mine, despite me giving the correct name that was already listed on the receipt and not visible to me beforehand. Beyond the service, the food itself was equally disappointing. I ordered the orange chicken, and it was some of the driest, lowest-quality chicken I have had anywhere. I have traveled extensively and eaten food all over the world, and it is rare to experience food this poor combined with service this disrespectful. This was an embarrassing experience for a business located near University of California, Berkeley. There are many better options nearby, and I would strongly recommend spending your money elsewhere. No one should have to deal with treatment like this or pay for a meal like this.

The rib was definitely the most impressive part of the dish. Not only was it huge and very Instagrammable, but it was also extremely tender--kind of like braised oxtail, but served in a cleaner, lighter broth. The daikon balanced out the richness of the meat really well, and overall, I'd say this was a very satisfying meal. The beef and tomato lo mein, on the other hand, was probably closer to a 2.5/5. The dish leaned heavily on the tomato flavor, only had a few pieces of meat, and definitely needed additional seasoning, such as soy sauce, white pepper, or something to bring more depth. One thing that could be improved is the ordering experience. Their tablet system felt a bit cheap, and it was difficult to clearly see what each dish looked like on the screen. Providing a printed menu alongside the tablet would be really helpful.

When I first heard of Great China, I assumed it would be more of a casual neighborhood mom-and-pop…read morespot, but I was definitely wrong. It's actually a popular, higher-end Chinese restaurant in downtown Berkeley, and judging by the number of people waiting to be seated on a weekend only 30 minutes after opening, it clearly does very well. One note: I often see long weekend lines forming even before opening, so I'd definitely recommend making a reservation or arriving early. We came here with one thing in mind: Peking duck. It was prepared beautifully, with the exact nostalgic flavor and crispy skin I was hoping for. I also loved the way they presented the thin pancakes--half-folded and slightly overlapping each other--so you didn't have to worry about peeling each layer apart and accidentally ripping them. The dipping sauce and green onions were provided on the side, though I do wish they included thinly sliced cucumber to complete the experience. My husband also ordered the fish, which turned out soft, delicate, and delicious. It was a nice complement to the duck and rounded out the meal really well. My only real critique of Great China is the pricing. You're definitely paying a premium here, but the food does taste authentic and well-executed. Given the limited competition in the area, I can see why it feels justifiable if you live nearby. That said, it may not be as worth the splurge for people who already have easy access to more traditional, old-school Chinese restaurants.

Peking duck and potstickers remain among my favorites, and the egg fried rice is a sleeper hit. Sad to see they no longer open for lunch, but I don't blame them considering how packed the dinner service is.

Although 3.8 is pretty low in my opinion, I believe this place should receive more of a 4.5 if I could do half ratings. Why? - Food has been consistently good and I know because I've been here several times ordering pretty much the same things (green beans, mapo tofu, lamb ribs and fried chicken); they MADE me like lamb which is huge because the only place I only loved it was in New Zealand, not a fan of the aftertaste - Service is friendly, food comes out relatively quickly; only suggestion is making more stops to refill waters/tea and ask if we are ready to pay the bill because we kind of need to flag them down for those things - Price is decent, def not $$, more like $ just because I split 5 large dishes among 3 people with LOTS leftover and it amounted to $33/person and in the era of 2026 with skyrocketing gas prices this is really good for tax and tip included - Easy parking in the area All in all, I hope this business is here to stay because I will be coming back again and again.

This was my experience with pretty much every dish I ordered on a recent trip to Yu Yu Za Zang. I'll admit this is one of those places I've walked or driven past for years and have always meant to try but just never got around to it. But I finally had an opportunity to drag my cousin/regular dining buddy with me. We ordered Yang Jang Pi (also known as Double Skin in some places), regular jajang (spelled zazang here) myun, and tang sue yuk (beef - which is the traditional Korean meat for this dish). My cousin and I are huuuuuge fans of the Double Skin at Great China in Berkeley, so the Double Skin here had a pretty high bar to reach. We were pleasantly surprised to find it more than held its own. The portions of everything were very generous, and the mustard dressing was nice and spicy. Perhaps the veggies were not quite as crunchy as Great China's, so not as much of a variety of textures, but this Yang Jang Pi was still delicious, and I still think about it days after our visit. The jajang (zazang) myun was also very generously portioned and pretty tasty. I haven't had any in Oakland in a while, so hard to say how it compares, but I would definitely eat it again. The beef tang sue yuk was incredible. Again, large portion, perfectly crispy outside, tender beef inside, and one of the best sweet and sour sauces I've ever had with this dish. The vibe is simple and clean; nothing fancy, but I went for the food, so I was fine with that. The service was also friendly and fast. There were barely any people there on a Saturday evening, which made me sad, because the food really is good. I can't wait to try the rest of their menu. They also have soju and beer. Although Hanshin Pocha next door is popular, I could see Yu Yu Za Zang being a decent spot for delicious, very reasonably priced food that one can share with friends while having a couple of rounds of drinks. And in this economy, aren't we all looking for a good deal?
