I've dined at Kitaro many times. Sushi rolls have all been delish. So fresh & tasty. I love the lunch bento box. Their fried rice is so flavorful. For dinner I've had the grilled shrimp from the hibachi grill. The shrimp were medium sized yet lacked in flavor. The vegetables were luke warm & hardly cooked. Very disappointing. The price did not reflect the food quality in this instance. The wine was good, but I was charged a dollar extra than the menu stated. I'll keep coming back for lunch, but I can find better sushi or hibachi places in the city. read more

The sushi is fantastic, the appetizers very good, the rest of the food--chicken, steak, short rib, fried rice is mediocre. But the reason for the bad rating is the horrendous service. It was longest dining experience of my life. Drinks took a half hour to come out, and the food took even longer. Every course, appetizers, sushi, mains, all took an eternity. The sushi was delicious...but not worth the wait. Every time we made eye contact with the server he turned around and walked away. It took us 20 minutes to get the bill. We then saw what looked like a nice tea service. I asked the waiter what kind of tea they had and said black and green--it was Lipton tea. American. Lipton. Tea. And on a $500 tab where 20% gratuity was already added (which is fine) also tacked on a 3% fee to use a credit card. They do disclose the 3% fee on the menu but we asked if it could be waived since the service was so slow and we spent so much. When we told the waiter that was pretty ignorant of the restaurant the waiter explained it was because the restaurant incurs a fee for the credit card. So, they just pass that fee onto the consumer. Both were tasty. For an appetizer we ordered the King Kong maki. ORDER IT. You won't regret it. We also had the crab cake. Consistency was different from what I've had in other crab cakes but was delicious nonetheless. We also had the clear soup (which came with the meal) and that was also tasty. For our entrees, I had the scallops with mixed veggies tossed in a sauce and a side of house fried rice. The veggies and the rice were seasoned to perfection. Scallops are literally hit or miss anywhere you go. They were ok, not the best I've ever had but also not the worst. Lacking a bit of flavor. This place is typically amazing. The owners are so nice and hardworking. The sushi is amazing. However, had the WORST experience there tonight due to a server. Ordered a beer that came out I kid you not 40 minutes later. We watched as tables came in, ate, and left. Our server had to be pretty green but he has no business being a server. Its a tough job and I applaud anyone that does it but this guy needs to find another job. It certainly doesnt suit his skill set. After an hour and half waiting for our meal, we asked for the check for the appetizer and beers. Then another 20 minutes passed as he decided to bring out SOME of the food(he informed us not all of it was ready) after we told him to cancel our order and bring us the check. It was an embarrassing situation for both parties. Again, great place. Always have had a good experience here. BUT PLEASE, work with this server to train him better or move on. This place is too good to have a bad server make people want to take the check and walk. Waiting 90 minutes for sushi and 40 minutes for a beer when they werent even close to capacity is wild. read more

This is, by far, the cutest restaurant I've EVER been in! I didn't want to leave, it was so chic and posh! The chandeliers did it for me, they were all over and right above each booth. We definitely need something like this in Phoenix! If I lived here this would be my hangout spot. I thought I was ordering a lobster sushi roll but instead ordered an actual lobster roll. I absolutely love this place. I've been here twice, and neither time has the food disappointed. Granted, the first time our server took our drink order and literally never came back. We had to try and hunt someone down, and she was super apologetic. The second time, service was a breeze with no complaints. The sushi here always tastes fresh, and is plated very pretty. It's a little on the pricey side, even for sushi, but it's worth it. I highly recommend the lemon salmon maki, the lemon is refreshing when compared to the raw, fresh fish. The sweet shrimp sashimi is also delicious. Cocktails are delicious here to, I'd personally go with a lychee martini. It's sweet but not too sweet, with a decent pour of alcohol. The decor of the place is super trendy and clean looking. It's just a cool place where you want to hang out. In a place where fresh sushi is not exactly easy to find, Kitaro is a very welcome place where I would love to go as often as my budget would allow me. read more

We had been thinking about trying this place as we normally go to another restaurant in the plaza so last night was the night! My husband is not a big sushi guy and luckily they had other options for him. Definitely more surf than turf. We started with the spring rolls. Crispy and delicious and the sauce was good. Drinks were okay. Then the wait....... we didn't order an exorbitant amount of food and they were clearly full staffed so we were not sure what the hold up was. Our waiter was also the bartender so that may have been part of the issue and he didn't make too many trips to the kitchen, who knows? My husbands steak and potatoes were cold when he got them. We didn't bother to send it back as it already took so long. I had sushi and tempura vegetables that were warmer than his. Also why I didn't take any pics as I we just dove right in. The chef added an assortment of fish including salmon, tuna, tamago, etc. This is slightly different than a poke bowl and contains gochuchang sauce (a red chili paste) which I personally think goes really well with the sashimi, rice and salad mixed in the bowl with yellow radish on the side. Portion is decent. I would not recommend getting the Brussels sprouts from this place. Was overpriced and not good at all. Added a picture, it was burnt and tasted very oily. I would rate this place 3.5 stars but because of the good service and Chirashi bowl I gave it a 4 star review. Scallop roll wasn't tasty to me, mainly had imitation crab. This place is a gem. My Sushi requirements Freshness, Preparation, Taste. Maki was a perfect balance of protein, vegetables, and a skilfully placed encasement of rice which was neither too thick nor too thin. They checked those boxes like an honor student. Service requires attentiveness and a degree of warmth, which Andrea fulfilled even as busy as she was. This only added to a pleasant experience. Decor was tastefully executed. I think that even more so when I return in the evening to enjoy the lighting and obvious ambiance. I was comfortable for a lunch but as a business entertainment venue or date night probably even more so. Some folks reviewing mentioned price, but you get what you pay for. As far as the staff goes, I was told everyone was nice, which always a plus with me :) As far as our order, we ordered the following: Ninja (56 Pieces): 2 Alaskan (raw) salmon, avocado and cucumber. 2 California snow crab meat, avocado and cucumber. 2 Spicy tuna (raw) spicy tuna, green onion. 2 Philadelphia smoked salmon, cream cheese and avocado. 2 Shrimp tempura avocado, cucumber and massago. 2 Other Rolls: Hawaiian Roll Raw. Tuna, scallop, snow crab, shrimp, and mango wrapped with soy paper, drizzled with citrus soy, citrus mayo and chili sauce. Dragon Roll Eel, shrimp tempura, cucumber, avocado, massago and sweet soy. So because we had this order from Kitaro Surf & Turf & Sushi and a Poke Bowl from another establishment, we definitely had sushi left over for later today (Saturday). Our rainbow roll came with plastic on the inside, and my miso ramen came without the toppings including the pork belly I called the restaurant and they credited me the rainbow roll. The booths were cozy. Would be a great anniversary dinner place for couples. Within walking distance without breaking a sweat from the Springhill Suites hotel next door. The seaweed cucumber salad was great (had a lot of ponzu like dressing). Sushi was good but a bit pricey for $25 for 10 pieces of the standard popular picks (eel, white tuna, tuna, salmon and hamachi) But looking at the menu, they would have been $8-10 for 2 pieces so it was priced good. The spring rolls were good and I really liked the sweet/sour sauce it came with. The filet and shrimp dinner was awesome! We were not fans of the fried rice that it came with. It was very dry and I cannot explain the flavor. Filet was cooked to order (medium) and was melting in your mouth like butter. The miso soup and clear soup were good. Miso had a lot of umami flavor.
