She never checked on us, was very blunt and we had to remind her multiple times of the drinks we ordered. The Miso soup arrived cold, reflecting poor attention to detail and we were seated close to the door where cold air kept rushing in, while half of the restaurant was open. A disappointing encounter that highlighted subpar customer service and a lack of commitment to customer satisfaction. Cool design and atmosphere in Munster. I'd say the best sushi I have had in NWI. Only con is it is a little pricey (12-17 dollars per roll) and my service was ok (she was forgetful and slow) I recommend getting a reservation for the weekend. Walked in on a Saturday evening with no reservation. It was very busy but I got seated at the bar quickly. Ordered the Sashimi Fifteen with some sushi rice as an added side, and a Tyku black junmai ginjo. Drink: Chilled Sake pairs well with the fish and has a great flavor individually. I like to buy my own bottle at a Japanese grocery store. Meal: Better than I expected. From left to right it was white fish (maybe Kamachi?), salmon, tuna, fatty tuna, and seared white tuna. Each one had good flavor, and they provided a decent amount of fish, enough to feel satisfied with the side of sushi rice. Service: Great. Drinks and fish came out within 5-10 minutes despite being fully busy. They were very friendly and checked on me regularly. The bar staff were very attentive, and they engaged well with customers. Kitaro is my go-to sushi place! They are a little pricey, but it's one of my favorites in NWI. Service can be a little slow, so take food to go if you're in a rush! The food and drinks are typically delicious. My only complaint really is that I feel like the sushi is a bit too "modernized." We've been back to Kitaro a multitude of times now and enjoy it each and every time. We always debate where to go in the area. I'm really a stickler for awesome food and great service (otherwise I'll just stay home) and they never disappoint here. We were here recently for our anniversary again and everything was awesome! Really enjoyed the Hawaiian Roll this time, I hadn't tried that in the past. We also had the halibut which was to die for. So fresh and perfectly cooked. Then lunch bento boxes. All good but the spicy Asian hibachi chicken (upgrade) was HOT, like too spicy to enjoy and I like some kick. Drowned it out with the handful of rice given. Even that didn't work. Then the sushi. Mine was... fishy. Beautiful to look at but not fresh feeling. Like old grease that cooked the tempura, I'm not sure. And salt. And fishy. My friend's California roll was fishy too and everything is cooked in those. Must be the seaweed. So skip the rolls next time. Rare occasion that I had dessert, it was my bday after all. I guess I have to give them a break...trying to operate under the strict guidelines and rules that govern this pandemic...but damn. I'm a culinary professional and I know how long it takes to get food to a table once an order is received. After unsuccessfully driving around Hammond looking for a place to eat, I ended up in Munster and remembered my homegirl told me about this amazing sushi place there, so I headed that way. I Was immediately impressed by the look of it, and once we got inside I was like, "Ok, I didn't expect all this from Munster." Shit was nice. We were seated and soon our very friendly waitress, Alyssa, sauntered over. She answered all questions professionally and took our drink order. First of all, the place wasn't THAT crowded, but it took FOREVER for our drinks to come. Somewhat watered down, but still good, we're at the table chillin. She comes back and we then placed our order. Like I said, I'm a culinary professional, but it doesn't take forever to make salads. As a former garde manger, that shit takes two minutes. We were expecting our salads to arrive with our Bacon Bomb maki (which, by the way, WAS the bomb) but they didn't. After scarfing down that deliciousness, we're ready for our salads. That shit took forever and we had to ask about their arrival a couple of times. Salads come finally...awesome. Now we want our entrees. We're waiting once again to the point I became hangry. And once again, since I'm A CULINARY PROFESSIONAL and am sensitive to what goes in a kitchen, I tried to be patient but I couldn't hold it any longer. I stalked over to the kitchen and looked at the line which was full with workers and couldn't figure out the delays. Tha fuck y'all back there doin? Shit. We hongry. I've been looking forward to eat here since I saw it under construction. We need a good sushi restaurant. It did not disappoint. We ordered Brussel sprouts, garlic edamame, asparagus wrapped in beef, buffalo shrimp, and king king maki. All of it was delicious! Although the buffalo shrimp was delicious, you do only get 3 big shrimp. I would've liked to have 4, even numbers are easier to split. The asparagus wrapped in beef had like a teriyaki sauce. The Brussels sprouts were cooked perfectly and had great flavor. My husband loved the maki (he's a pickier eater) I would recommend to anyone. I really wanted to like this place, so after a bad first visit, I gave it another try. Unfortunately, it was another overpriced bad meal. The spicy tuna roll was the equivalent of mushy fish and looked like it was mashed with store bought pace picante salsa. No idea how they can call this sushi, it had a watery and unpleasant flavor. I didn't eat it, and I was not asked why by the waitress. Second visit: Decided to try a hot entree and chose the Korean short ribs. Long wait for a sad little meal. What arrived, was a large chunk of hot fat slathered in a brown sauce. Very, very little actual meat in this entree. It's also very small portions, and for $30+ dollars for just the entree alone, it's disappointing to not feel full from a meal and a complete rip off. You can get the same size portion at a gross little Panda Express for $8. No thank you!!! All in all, I'm done trying to get a decent meal here. UPDATE: Had the pleasure of returning to Kitaro yesterday for indoor dining after a 9 month lull in dining in - Kaleb our waiter was so attentive and wonderful. Tried the Sumo balls and Crispy green beans for appetizers... absolutely delicious! This time we also indulged in some cocktails - one was a specialty drink called Firebreather which was unique and delicious. Also had the Spicy Mango Mojito which is one of the best mojitos I've ever had! Yesterday I had the unfortunate pleasure of coming this restaurant . The owner and one server , Amy has poor customer service skills and the food took several hours to come out. We came here to celebrate my friends birthday . My sister and I had made a mistake ordering the Niguri sushi dish instead of the rolls . We thought we would try one a piece and left the remaining pieces on the plate.We made our server aware as soon as possible . Well it actually took a while because Amy was not really attentive . It was a large party , I get it . I've worked in the service industry. I explained to Amy that we did make a mistake on ordering these and we didn't like it. I asked could we switch it out that would be more of our liking . Amy told us both "Oh we don't take back stuff because of taste ", before I could actually finish my statement, Amy stormed off to get the manager as if she was about to have a tantrum . The manager came to the table very rude, I explained the situation . In little words she told me she could take the plate but it's not coming off the bill nor would she exchange it for free. She took the plate away without us giving the okay , $30 down the drain for that dish. On top of that we ordered the noodles which were terrible and chicken completely dry. At that point , I was ready to waste my money aka pay for the poor customer service and subpar food because they didn't give us a choice to order anything else . I will not be returning to this restaurant because they didn't care that we the customers weren't satisfied. They could have handled the situation much better than what they did .I should have known that the experience was going to be terrible from the time we entered the restaurant. I enjoy this restaurant very much and have ordered the same thing every Saturday for over a month now. During this time they are still, which is great. I ordered the shrimp yakisoba with extra noodles which is $20 ($15 for meal+ $5 for extra noodles) no problem I love it so I pay it! The problem is over the course of my orders they have drastically cut portion size which is a problem because they are on the more expensive side! The last two visits the portion size seemed smaller so I checked my bag before leaving and spoke with the manager and hostess who assured me everything is correct and when getting home the box is not even full. I paid $5 for extra noodles... if this is the original packaging for a regular order how would you be able to fit my additional order all in the same box. We were there 12/30/19. I love a good steak and sushi and so, decided to finally try this place. I liked that you walk into a very trendy, chic and clean atmosphere. Our waitress, Holly, was very nice and attentive from beginning to end. We started with some appetizers. Sushi, Buffalo Shrimp, crab rangoon and edamame beans. The crab rangoon were very good. They had a lot of filling and were crisp to perfection. The edamame beans were steamed with a spicy seasoning, also very good. The buffalo shrimp looked good until we bit into them. The cooks didnt take the shell off the shrimp. Everytime we took a bite, we bit into breading and SHELL. Also, did I mention you only get 3 pieces? Which they make no mention in the menu. We told our waitress and she went to check with the "cook". They insisted it was only the tail. Again, I stressed that it was the entire shrimp. We're the ones who bit into them. WE should know. She took the last piece back and the cook replaced it with 1 newly cooked shrimp. We only got 1 shrimp back. Needless to say, it was peeled as it should've been to begin with and pretty good. The drinks. I ordered a cucumber martini. Very small btw. It was ridiculously strong but I drank it anyway. When I was ready for a 2nd drink I ordered the passionfruit margarita. It was not good. Extremely strong!!! It tasted like straight tequila. If I wanted straight tequila, I would've ordered tequila on the rocks. I told our waitress and instead of offering to make me a new one, the bartender was doctoring it. Which basically was pouring some of it out and adding more juice. I had to fix it myself at the table by adding water. Keep in mind, these cocktails are NOT cheap. I finally told Holly it was fine. I mean, it wasnt getting better. I need to update my review...I gave 4 stars in the past due to service, but really need to lose a star due to quality. i'm trying to be more than fair because I want a sushi restaurant to succeed in Munster. But here's the problem and its the same problem as before...when you have sushi chef who's not trained well you get a subpar product, regardless of the quality of the fish. This is exactly what you get at Kitaro! poorly prepared sushi, that I would compare with what you would find in an airport terminal. The pieces are very very small...but the prices exceed what I find in New York or San Francisco. maybe its the transportation costs, but i'm skeptical. i know the overhead is high and the environment is very appealing, so expect a higher cost...but you should get what you pay for...and the preparation (how the sushi is cut) needs to improve, even if they never change the portion size. read more

I was disappointed that the bento box lunch didn't include a vegetable option for the Maki and when I asked about a substitution, the server immediately said no without conferring with the chef. No where on the menu or internal postings did I see "no substitutions allowed" and I would have paid an up charge if that were the case. I was debating on whether to try the Singapore Sling made with Roku gin or the Asian Pear Martini made with Haku vodka. I love this place! I'm a sushi lover (read: sushi snob) and I was concerned about this place actually having quality sushi. I was pleasantly surprised! The specialty rolls were unique and FILLING! I usually have to order 5-6 rolls for a table of 2 because they're so small. We ordered 4 rolls and an appetizer and we were STUFFED! We didn't even finish them! This place is also very newbie friendly. There are plenty of rolls with cooked seafood to ease someone who's hesitant on in to sushi. I will DEFINITELY return because there are so many things on the menu I want to try! We did have a small hiccup with the drinks - my French 75 was too sweet and they didn't allow me to send it back for it to be taken off my bill. We fixed it. Fresh lemon juice did the trick. I asked if I could get something else instead because the taste of the meat was very unpleasant. Chef John came out to speak with me about my meal and he was defensive when I told him I didn't like the food. The description on the menu says, "succulent crab", nothing about that was succulent. I have had imitation lobster before but NEVER have I tasted anything like that. The fries were NOT seasoned, the roll tasted like it had noodles mixed with the meat, and he tells me he will only take 50% off. Not once did he ask if there was anything else on the menu I would prefer. This has absolutely nothing to do with money but his demeanor was totally unacceptable.
