    Butterfly roll, tuna nigiri
    Laurie K.

This place has been around forever and it's really great. it's a small, charming little restaurant above Prime steakhouse on the square. friendly staff and a nice, comfortable vibe. it's a bit pricey for the chef's rolls but they have great specials (buy a chefs roll get a regular roll free-on Tuesdays). My son and I really liked the butterfly roll and the red on red, as well as she cherry blossom.

seated quickly it's small in size but big in selection and flavor only issue would have is parking but the food and service make up for it

Tried this place once and it wasn't very good. Decided to try a second time and really disappointed. My sushi smells very fishy when I got home. My spider roll was the smallest amount of crab I have ever seen on this roll. Lots of rice. High price tag but no crap. My spicy tuna wasn't spicy and barely any tuna either. Had a red and red roll spicy tuna inside topped with tuna $5.50 extra for 6 tiny piece of tuna on top of a spicy tuna roll. I will never go back. Just hoping I don't end up sick because the fish smells old.

I'm going to go ahead and give this 5 starts because it is one of the few places in this area of NWI where you can get sushi, and far and away the BEST. I can't comment on all the fish because we played it safe with salmon and tuna, but the rolls we had were very good. My favorite was the simple checker roll that had white tuna, avocado, carrots, and red or black tobiko. My boyfriend said our dinner was the first time he enjoyed sushi and devoured the special rock lobster roll. I'm pretty sure it was just crawfish, but it was tasty. The tuna fire was also a winner - also not on fire. It had some delayed heat to it that was really nice. I recommend the special dry sake. It comes cold and at $8 it was an exceptional value.

Sushi a la carte, Hot Night roll, and unagi roll

UMI is one of the few places that has sushi in NW Indiana. It is located on the second floor of the steakhouse. The sushi is good, but I have had better for the same price tag - it's definitely a little more on the expensive side. It was still delicious though especially a la carte! The seaweed salad was plentiful and the miso is standard miso soup, so nothing special. Ordered sushi a la carte, Hot Night roll, and unagi roll. We will definitely be back, but probably not as often as we'd like .

As good as it gets? Unless you plan on spending the dosh to go get tickets to travel to Tokyo and visit Tsukiji fish market, you got your self a solid second place. A lot of thoughts get thrown around my head when I heard a new sushi place was opening in crown point square like: "You just went full Baka." but UMI was a pleasant surprise. Being in the Northwest Indiana Region, we all know that the quality of sushi bars is set pretty low. When your friends start suggesting that the sushi from the local grocery store is "good" you're in trouble. NO MORE I SAY. Look, I've been to Tokyo three times in my life and this is comparable. Jiro might scoof at me and call me a filthy gaijin, but UMI has got the chops to play amongst the big boys. First positive, service was pleasant. My group was the only ones who sat down this afternoon and our first plates came up quickly however a few to go orders came in while we were eating which made it seem like our second order was put on the back burner but the staff took notice and gave us a few freebies. A nice touch in customer service is they acknowledge our wait to continue our patronage with them. Second, the sushi. THEY HAVE TORO. HOLY $hit they have TORO! One bite and I was taken back to the narrow alleyways of Tsukiji market. You know that scene in ratatouille where the evil food critic took his first bite of his dish and was transported back to his memories of his mother's cooking? Yeah, it's kinda like that. The Toro was easily the highlight of the meal. Spider Rolls, Spicy Scallop, sweet potato, California were all pretty good, but it's hard to beat good quality fatty tuna dipped in a little soy sauce ginger wasabi and green onion. One suggestion is that they have more food options. You have a lot to choose from when looking at sushi options, however; a plate of tempura veggies, shrimp, or a bowl of udon would have been a great pairing. Third, the sushi chef understands Japanese. It nice to show off a little bit of my foreign language skills and it's clear that he knows what he's doing with his craft. :P And that pretty much sums up UMI. Their decor seems a little bit dated (c'mon guys get that carpet off the stairs), the service took a little bit longer than expected, they are not the easiest place to find and they're not the cheapest place around. I wish they had more food options, but I still give them five stars. It's all about the food here, and that's where UMI makes it count. When I got a fever and the only prescription is more raw fish, I'm going straight to UMI.

We had a wonderful date night and amazing fresh sushi! Not pictures is the spicy scallop and that was amazing

Not great. Pretty expensive for food that is marginal at best. Plus my drink tasted like chemicals.

One important thing to note about seating is that some of the tables are high-top bar tables. I happen to have a disability, so had they assigned our reservation with one of those tables it would have been a problem because it's hard for me to get up and down in those seats. The service was A-1! From the hostesses to the wait staff and management. They were extremely attentive throughout our meal. Instead of just putting the appetizers on the table, our waiter plated them for us. This is probably the only misstep during our meal. He assumed that all of us wanted a piece of each app instead of asking each of us which app we wanted. We ordered stuffed mushrooms and bruschetta. A couple people didn't like mushrooms. Also, we had more people joining us so by plating all the apps upfront there wasn't enough for the rest of our party. Even still he was a great waiter. The food was phenomenal! I got the steak and eggs from the brunch menu. The cut of steak was like a hanger steak. When I say cooked and seasoned to perfection!?! It was one of the best restaurant steaks I've had. Our entire table enjoyed the food we ordered, including the cocktails. The food is pricey, but for an elevated experience or special occasion it is absolutely worth the visit!

Regardless, since it was our first visit we wanted to try cheaper items before trying a steak to see if it's worth coming back. For appetizer we ordered the lamb chops. I had high hopes but they were all fat..worst I've ever had and I have a lot of lamb! We both had pasta dishes. Mine was the orecchiette pasta but it was under done and it was extremely spicey considering the menu did not say that. Had three bites and threw it out. We also had the shrimp Alfredo and the shrimp was way over cooked. Anyways - I thought this place was supposed to be upscale but the food doesn't match the interior to me from my first visit and like Eminem says you got once chance.

The venue Wasn't too crowded which was a plus. I decided to have dinner with reservations @3pm with the App OpenTable. On time for my reservation with no wait time! Seated immediately, I was excited to have my waitress named Arielle. Immediately, she accompanied me with complimentary bread and water along with the restaurant cocktail and food menus. She was very happy to be able help in any way to make me comfortable and was just a joy to have. My first course was the Iceberg wedge BLT, with my cocktail smoked old fashioned. For the second course I spoiled myself with the filet medallions with lobster tail Oscar style accompaniment sides; truffled mac&cheese, and crab fried rice with mushrooms and scallions. Sheeeshh! That meal was phenomenal! Lobster sat perfectly on top of the beef medallions as they both were served and with gratitude I ate every bit of it! Truffled Mac & cheese were so cheesy it was a perfect mouthful. The rice also had some delicious flavors that enticed my tastebuds with savory goodness! Everything was GOODT! Easter Sunday with great food, good company, and dope service ! Check em out!

That is always a bummer when you have people without their meals. For the price, you have to send it back. My rib eye was very good but my wife and daughter's filets were well done vs medium rare. So while we had a great time and the service was top notch, the stars of the meals were not on point.

Note: We gave this place multiple passes on bad behavior/customer service. I'll never spend another dollar there. So 1st the phone call: While he was talking to the young lady, he had to ask the her several times to be patient with him because she got annoyed with him asking basic questions. Besides, she kept misquoting us and we were Patient with her. Arrival: I get there and she's like we ran out of medium lobster tails so we charged you $5 more for a large lobster tail. So they made that and never said anything until it was time to pay. Again, I let this slide because my dad really wanted this place and I won't be able to get him it tomorrow(actual Father's Day) As I'm getting ready to pay, the young lady tried to charge me and additional $4 because she kept making up that I was paying with ebt. I never said anything about ebt or even debit..I kept saying that I was paying with a credit card then she was like "oh it's only $2 extra" I was like well we called and we weren't notified that there was a different fee if you pay with card. I could've stopped to get cash if I was notified when we asked. Her response was pretty much, "you see the paper right there.... well that's what he wants to charge so..." I reminded her for the 3rd or 4th time that I never been there so these are things that I didn't know before arriving. So here we are at $7 additional dollars for this food that we were unaware of. Sn: during the visit, This girl started rolling her eyes while talking to customers on the phone which definitely confirmed her impatience for our call. After purchasing: I went to the car took my dad his food and told him that I'd never return. So, he called and asked to speak to the manger. The girl left him on hold and then came back and said that there wasn't a manager for him to speak to. No one was in charge there. And she hung up on him while he was speaking. That young lady really created a bad experience in addition to hidden fees and things. As far as, the food.. for the price, quality, and experience was not great. The price point for my catfish and shrimp was not bad but the flavor was not good. The quality wasn't good either. (I'll share a picture of mine) My dad's food was around $53 for a 1 large lobsters tail, 1/2 catfish, 1/2 shrimp with the potatoes, corn and broccoli. I was hoping that food would redeem this experience but it didn't. It's a no return for me. You can literally make better seafood boil at home with a positive experience/no hidden fees/ and lots of flavor for less.
