We are a family of three. Two of us love sushi and my husband doesn't. Our daughter and I really enjoy the sushi here. It's our go to place. However, on a night when we want to go out as a family we are out of luck. Tried to come out tonight as a family and was hoping my husband could order something from Prime Steakhouse downstairs. They do not allow that. No do they serve sushi on the patio. So instead of having dinner as a family my husband went down by himself to the bar to have dinner while we had dinner upstairs. I know there are other places we could go for sushi and cooked food but we like the food at these restaurants. So disappointed that they won't accommodate in any way. read more

I am a fanatic for good sushi. This place from online and social looked like a great place to try. We went on a Saturday night around 8:30....we're in our thirties not 70 but no one was here. What I hate even more is that the staff is at the bar like cleaning up before the night ends - so there's this whole nice ambiance and experience that is missing and right away it feels like fast food - hurry up and get out. (Not their fault entirely) Regardless, we each ordered a drink a piece and then started with the Gyoza appetizer. IMO it was overcooked and burnt on the bottom, but not terribly so it was still edible. - but $14 poorer not smiling about it. Onto the entrees: I ordered two maki rolls the butterfly (this was really good imo just had a touch too much sauce. Then I also went with the Lobster Rock Special roll with lobster on top. The lobster was so overcooked and drenched in garlic sauce that it was almost inedible. It tasted like someone drizzled dominos garlic sauce all over it. WHY? Such good quality fish...let it shine. We also had ordered two additional plain rolls: shrimp tempura: your standard nothing special but edible. And then the sweet potato roll. However they give you some salted caramel glaze to go with it which makes this seem like a weird dessert - no good no way! Look - I could have ordered the wrong stuff. This is probably the best sushi I've ever had in my life. I ordered the Umi signature roll came with white tuna, spicy tuna, spicy crab meat, cream cheese. It was perfect. I've had a lot of sushi in my time and this was probably if not the best one of the best I've ever had.. I also enjoyed the house salad. It comes with spiral shredded carrot slice of cucumber and coldest. I burn lettuce I've ever had. The ginger dressing was phenomenal. read more

This place has been around forever and it's really great. it's a small, charming little restaurant above Prime steakhouse on the square. friendly staff and a nice, comfortable vibe. it's a bit pricey for the chef's rolls but they have great specials (buy a chefs roll get a regular roll free-on Tuesdays). My spider roll was the smallest amount of crab I have ever seen on this roll. Lots of rice. High price tag but no crap. My spicy tuna wasn't spicy and barely any tuna either. Had a red and red roll spicy tuna inside topped with tuna $5.50 extra for 6 tiny piece of tuna on top of a spicy tuna roll. I will never go back. I'm going to go ahead and give this 5 starts because it is one of the few places in this area of NWI where you can get sushi, and far and away the BEST. I can't comment on all the fish because we played it safe with salmon and tuna, but the rolls we had were very good. My favorite was the simple checker roll that had white tuna, avocado, carrots, and red or black tobiko. My boyfriend said our dinner was the first time he enjoyed sushi and devoured the special rock lobster roll. I'm pretty sure it was just crawfish, but it was tasty. The tuna fire was also a winner - also not on fire. It had some delayed heat to it that was really nice. I recommend the special dry sake. UMI is one of the few places that has sushi in NW Indiana. It is located on the second floor of the steakhouse. The sushi is good, but I have had better for the same price tag - it's definitely a little more on the expensive side. It was still delicious though especially a la carte! I ordered online and when I went to pick up, they had accidentally left out one of my rolls on the ticket. They owned up to the mistake quickly and punched a new ticket. No big deal, I just waited the 4-5 minutes it took for the chef to make it. I got in the car and realized two of the rolls looked different than previously and called them. I had made the mistake of not double checking my final order but they still issued me a partial refund due to the confusion for the similar order names as well as the wait for my last roll. This place is quite hidden and can be easily missed/ignored, as it sits on top of a steakhouse in Crown Point's traffic square. But don't let the hidden location fool you, it is totally legit. The restaurant isn't all that big, so it's probably best if you visit during a time when it's not busy, i.e. lunch time on Sundays, or expect to wait on Fridays/Saturday night. Service was great, the server made sure our water glasses were filled at all times. You won't like UMI if you're looking for Chicken Teriyaki because they don't serve it. It's strictly sushi. I especially love these kinds of restaurants, where they concentrate on something they do really well and that's it. It may not get as much business as a place that serves non-sushi dishes as well, but it'll attract people that genuinely love sushi. The fish was fresh and the rolls were interesting and creative. I would say the only down side is the cost. Just to give you an idea, a simple Philadelphia roll - smoked salmon, avocado, and cream cheese is $9. I can get that at most other places that also serve quality sushi for half the price. If the prices were lower, I'd probably give it a 5 star. read more

As good as it gets? Unless you plan on spending the dosh to go get tickets to travel to Tokyo and visit Tsukiji fish market, you got your self a solid second place. A lot of thoughts get thrown around my head when I heard a new sushi place was opening in crown point square like: "You just went full Baka." but UMI was a pleasant surprise. Being in the Northwest Indiana Region, we all know that the quality of sushi bars is set pretty low. When your friends start suggesting that the sushi from the local grocery store is "good" you're in trouble. NO MORE I SAY. Look, I've been to Tokyo three times in my life and this is comparable. Jiro might scoof at me and call me a filthy gaijin, but UMI has got the chops to play amongst the big boys. First positive, service was pleasant. My group was the only ones who sat down this afternoon and our first plates came up quickly however a few to go orders came in while we were eating which made it seem like our second order was put on the back burner but the staff took notice and gave us a few freebies. A nice touch in customer service is they acknowledge our wait to continue our patronage with them. Second, the sushi. THEY HAVE TORO. HOLY $hit they have TORO! One bite and I was taken back to the narrow alleyways of Tsukiji market. You know that scene in ratatouille where the evil food critic took his first bite of his dish and was transported back to his memories of his mother's cooking? Yeah, it's kinda like that. The Toro was easily the highlight of the meal. Spider Rolls, Spicy Scallop, sweet potato, California were all pretty good, but it's hard to beat good quality fatty tuna dipped in a little soy sauce ginger wasabi and green onion. One suggestion is that they have more food options. You have a lot to choose from when looking at sushi options, however; a plate of tempura veggies, shrimp, or a bowl of udon would have been a great pairing. Third, the sushi chef understands Japanese. It nice to show off a little bit of my foreign language skills and it's clear that he knows what he's doing with his craft. :P And that pretty much sums up UMI. Their decor seems a little bit dated (c'mon guys get that carpet off the stairs), the service took a little bit longer than expected, they are not the easiest place to find and they're not the cheapest place around. I wish they had more food options, but I still give them five stars. It's all about the food here, and that's where UMI makes it count. When I got a fever and the only prescription is more raw fish, I'm going straight to UMI. read more

Atmosphere: Not the best. The restaurant decor is VERY dated. If I was walking off the street I probably wouldn't stop in here to eat. Food: I've eaten here well over 20 times and haven't had a bad meal. I really like their eel roll and spicy tuna roll. I've had a few of their speciality rolls and they were good not great. Price: if you come during happy hour I think it's worth the price. I was a little disappointed when I ordered one of their feature rolls that was $20+ and it was very mediocre. While it's a little difficult to find parking during prime hours, that may be because I detest parking on the square. The food and service far outweigh that annoyance. The restaurant shares a building with Prime Steakhouse and is located directly above that restaurant. The stairway is a little narrow but at the top you're greeted by very friendly and knowledgeable staff. Favorite rolls: Angry Wife, Celebration!, Unagi, Butterfly, Salmon Skin. I like trying new things and I like to eat so I was happy to try real sushi at UMI. WOW, was it good and surprisingly a lot of gluten free options here! For me, it was like finding yet another hidden treasure on the square as you walk up those stairs and I got really excited to eat here! Eh, they're ok. Not the best I've ever had, but for Crown Point IN I'll give them 3/5. The rolls are definitely over priced and for the quality, the maki rolls should always be free. Personally, I would like to know what I was ordering, I don't feel a description is enough. Most sushi restaurants have pictures now days. Seems like they're still training everyone who works there. I think mostly you pay for the fact that they're owned by the Prime steakhouse. It's more of a bar atmosphere not a family restaurant. I would hate to go back when they get more busy. They only have one sushi chef and we were waiting a while for our rolls when there was only one other party seated. I don't think I'd go back except if there was a better discount. Hours say that they are open until 8PM on Sunday; a friend and I came in at 7:30PM on Sunday, June 10th to order a couple of rolls. The hostess seated us, and the server came over and told us that the "kitchen was closed" (one would think they might have alerted the hostess, too). We mentioned that the website hours said that the sushi bar was open until 8PM. She asked the sushi chef, and he confirmed that the kitchen was closed. Business must be magnificent if you are turning away customers with no explanation, no apology, and not even sending us to the steakhouse downstairs (although that may have closed 30 minutes before their posted hours, too - who knows?). This was not Umi's finest hour of customer service. If you close at 7:30, post that you close at 7:30 (and we would have saved a trip uptown *specifically* to come to your restaurant. read more
