I wanted to like this. I tried to convince myself that this was a great experience, but by the end of the meal I knew better. Our server could care less about our table. I watched him and other staff wait hand and foot over the table of girls next to us (my wife, the former server, said this is what happens when you have just men running the front of house). They got sat several minutes after us. They got served, orders in, drinks before we even got our napkins. I watched as other tables got good service too. We came in with smiles on and happy to be there. We want a good time and a good meal. This was the WORST service I have had at a restaurant. As we were leaving I let them know. The drinks are ok. Nothing to write home about. I would have figured with all the fresh fruit they would do some fun things. I sampled my way through the menu and was underwhelmed. They just played it safe and in doing so made average drinks. It could be so much better. Like the drinks, the food was the same. My shrimp was the only good thing, but it was just fried shrimp. My lamb was thin cut. It was gray on the outside. The grill was not hot enough and they could not get a good sear on it. It was bland. The plate came with beans. It was not plated with care. It doesn't look that appeitizing. My wife had the tune. This was a huge portion, but it was not seared like the lamb. It was too thick and not cooked proper. A good tuna should have a balance of sear, cooked ring, and rare. This was just seared and raw. It was thick cut and sloopy. The potato salad was good. While the outdoor setting is beautiful. The overall sloppines, bugs, power outages, and dirt don't make for a good dining experience Outdoor can be done very well, but I don't think they have it down. I would not bother. My husband and I were excited to try this place out, as we weren't able to get a reservation at Hartwood. KT asks that you make reservations no more than a week out, and they only have a 6p.m. and 9p.m. dinner seating. We arrived less than 5 minutes before and there was a group of guests already waiting outside, they were serious about opening at 6 sharp! We were greeted warmly and quickly seated. The concept is very cool, jungle setting, candle lit, open kitchen, we loved it! The had a lemonade cocktail made with vodka as their drink of the night, it was delicious and strong. We ordered the peppers as our appetizer, the octopus and pork ribs, and the salted caramel pot for dessert. Peppers-a great light appetizer, they were slightly sweet, not spicy and the bread was delicious. Octopus- tender, the sauce was divine and they gave you bread on the side to sop up the leftover sauce. Also accompanied with sweet potato. My husband was not a fan of this dish, but I loved it! Pork Ribs- these are as delicious as everyone said they would be. Perfectly crunch yet juicy, one order is not enough! The swiss chard was also good, and I ate up every last bit of the plantain fufu!! Dessert- I made sure to save room for dessert as I had read about the caramel dessert. It did not disappoint, it was somehow dense but light at the same time, not quite a caramel, not quite a pudding. My mouth is watering just thinking about it! They do have some bug spray there, they only ask that you spray it by the host station as to not contaminate the other guest's food. 5 stars in Tulum! Every single aspect of this restaurant deserves 5 stars and more. From the service to the drinks to the food and especially the ambiance. This is as farm to table as you get and I'm pretty sure they don't even have refrigerators at this restaurant. I'm almost positive a lot of the meat, etc. was coming out of ice coolers scattered throughout the kitchen. It's a kitchen right in the middle of the jungle and they make some of the most amazing food we've ever had. The octopus, the arrachera... OMG! The kind of hipster chic farm to table restaurant you'd find in SF or NY, with a very small curated menu. Staff is very friendly and the open kitchen makes you feel like you are cooking and dining in the tropical jungle. We basically ate everything on the menu and LOVED it all. Get the Diablito (cocktail) and the Shrimp are to die for! The octopus, and pork ribs are so insanely good as well. If you order the crab/lobster, you get to pick it out yourself before they prepare it. Oh and Pahaus Punch is the best watermelon based cocktail I had all week in Tulum. Overall, we had a very pleasant night. From the road, you wouldn't expect such a great space could be tucked away on top of a little hill. However, once you make your way up into Kitchen Table you actually get a great view of the surrounding jungle. This spot is quite quaint and they make sure to extend the idea of coexisting throughout the feel of the rest of the restaurant, all the way to the little bridge you take to the toilets. The food was raw in the sense that there wasn't a lot of extra spices or accoutrements added to each dish. The chef allows the main ingredient to take the spot light and carry the dish. The stuffed avocado is a must and there were some great pork tacos on the menu when we visited I would mos def order again.We also enjoyed each of our drinks, I had the mojito and appreciated that they kept it traditional, with fresh mint muddled with cane sugar. read more

What an incredible treehouse like experience. We we greeted with a moist essential oil scented hand towels. Open kitchen with friendly staff. It's awesome to hear the chef call out entrees to the sous chefs. Daily cocktail, vodka cucumber, was so refreshing. The octopus is fork tender and sautéed in cast iron with a light white wine garlic sauce. Mushroom quesadilla is definitely the best quesadilla we've ever had. It has just the right amount of cheese with plenty of mushrooms. The pork ribs are juicy with a crispy crust and simply seasoned. Salted caramel is a great take on a traditional Mexican favorite dessert Cajeta. Delicious without being overly sweet. Kitchen Table is a must visit after spending the day at the Ruins of Tulum. I'm pretty sure Kitchen Table was hands down the best dinner and dining experience I had while on a Labor Day week trip to Tulum. If you go here, trust me, you won't be disappointed if you didn't get into Hartwood. We walked in on a Tuesday about 8pm and got seated right away. The place has limited seating, so reservations might be recommended. From the gracious host to the attentive and friendly server, my friend and I were given the royal treatment. It's as if we were the only customers they were concerned with. Their level of customer care was appreciated. As we sat down and ordered our drinks, we were given cold towels with which to clean our hands. The host even gave me bug spray, since the restaurant is open-air and mosquitoes are a problem. They had special incense burning every few tables to help with the bugs too. We ordered some wine, started with the deviled avocado and enjoyed the grilled octopus and ahi tuna for our entrees. The kitchen is also open air and front and center. A few gas stoves in the center and ice chests for the "fridge" just added to the ambience of the restaurant. Everything was delicious. The octopus came served in a cast-iron skillet, just charred enough to give that great flavor, with an delicious lemony-garlic sauce to keep it nice and juicy. The tuna was gorgeous and melt-in-your-mouth. Sides included pan bread and potatoes. Both wonderful. We were fully satisfied and over the moon with our dining experience. We talked about it the rest of the week and kicked ourselves for not coming back while still in town. Another wonderful meal in Tulum. You won't be disappointed! read more

Overall outstanding experience! Restaurant reviews should be strictly food/drink based, however, this place scored 5 stars across the board on food, service and ambiance. We ordered the deviled avocado, crispy shrimp and huitacoche omelette. Presentation and taste were impeccable. For entrees we had the pulpo and the arracherra (flank steak). We'd heard the pulpo was the best in Tulum, and that was absolutely true! I don't eat meat, but my husband was extremely pleased with the steak! It was a TON of food for 2 people, but oh so good! The food is one star, and even that's actually a stretch considering the price tag. Extra star goes for the setting and the coffee (which was very good). With regards to the food - these guys are trying to be hip and i guess inventive (?), but the result is underwhelming and basic, yet pretentious. We had the deviled avocado and bread w/peppers for appetizers, which were both edible, but pedestrian and meh... This was my first trip to Mexico, and we chose to spend our time in Tulum. Anywhere I go, I want to sample the local food scene. The name I kept hearing was Hartwood, but the more I looked into it, the more I kept hearing about Kitchen Table, so I thought we'd go that route. Overall, the experience was excellent. The ambiance was tremendous. We got to sit across from the kitchen and watch the chefs do their thing. They have a great wood-burning oven and limited electronic equipment. The ingredients looked to be of extremely high quality. The restaurant itself feels like a great big hut. The tables along the edge of the restaurant look out over the forest canopy. All in all, a great setting. The service was likewise very good. Attentive but not overbearing. Not quite as attentive as a similar restaurant in the states, but we quickly learned that in Tulum, things just move at a more leisurely pace. The drinks were superb and a little more creative than we found elsewhere. The food, sadly enough, was where expectations were not quite met. We started with the deviled avocado and the walnut/blue cheese/grilled pear salad. Both were quality, with the avocado being significantly more creative, but they both underwhelmed. For dinner we got the seared tuna and the pork ribs. The tuna was probably the highlight (food-wise) of the meal. The tuna was high-quality, the flavors were delicate but impactful. The pork was the most disappointing dish. The flavor was there, but the meat was of poor quality. Tough, lots of waste, just not up to snuff for a restaurant like this. I've done much better in my back yard, and I'm by no means any kind of a grill master or anything. Overall, it was a great experience. After lots of research before heading to Tulum kitchen table kept coming up as a must go to place. We didn't make reservations so we hoped for the best and walked up and was seated immediately. It was a great setting in the jungle side not many tables, very quaint and Dim lit. It had the most charm out of all the places we went in Tulum. Like most places it was a brick oven and open fire stove. Witch adds to the feel of a place. The girl friend got the famed octopus and it was unbelievable and fresh . Have never had any so good in my life. I got the ribs and they were great also. Not fall off the bone but sometime a rib is not supposed to be that way. In this case I would say it was stop on for the style rib. They are a must along with the octopus to try. I stuck with beer from small local Brewery's witch was a great complement to the ribs. Beer and ribs who doesn't like that? If your in Tulum and want to check out a really great place that's towards the more quaint and Romantic side of things this is for you. I ate at kitchen table a few months ago and walked away thinking it was the best meal of my life. I went back last week curious to see if that impression held up. Kitchen table did not disappoint. We ordered the entire menu. For me both times the salads were amazing, but the deviled avocado stood out to me most. It has the taste of a deviled egg without the texture which makes me nauseous. For entrées they are all amazing. I never thought I would go for octopus but the texture and taste were both incredible. I would and have recommended kitchen table to anyone passing through Tulum. We saved the best for last on our recent trip to Tulum. Kitchen Table is hidden within jungle like paradise. The kitchen is the view here, and you can watch the chefs execute and prepare your meal just a few feet away. We started with the deviled avocado which was delicious and beautifully prepared. I'm 100% sure they served me dirty water. Every where I went I ordered bottled water and no ice. When I ordered bottled water here they brought it to me in a small craft. We went through two crafts pretty fast because its summer and it was hot plus the food is very salty. I took one sip of the third craft and knew it was different from the first two. It smelled and tasted like sewage water. My boyfriend smelt it and didn't drink it. We are not ones to complain and we were pretty much finished so we paid and left. 48 hours later I was paying for drinking that one sip of water. The food was ok and it was the most expensive meal we had so I guess we just expected to be wowed. So unless you want Montazuma's revenge don't drink the water here. Also don't waste your time with over priced food when there are so many other AMAZING places around. read more

My favorite restaurant in Tulum. Do yourself a favor and get the tempura shrimp, pork ribs, and potato salad. You're probably wondering, "did she say potato salad?", yes that's right potato salad. The BEST potato salad I've ever had in my life. Who knew potato salad could be so light and refreshing? The tempura shrimp was seasoned so perfectly and the shrimp itself was so fresh. The pork ribs fell off the bone and had the perfect crisp on the outside. Definitely get dessert to experience the back room they have behind the restaurant itself. Grab a cigar and order their homemade truffle! Tip: They only have reservations at 6pm or 9pm. We went during low season and it was pretty easy to get a reservation, but I imagine during high season this place gets busy. read more

This place has a nice romantic ambiance at night(not sure if they're opened for lunch), is rustic and has a few floor levels, we tried the ceviche, it was delicious in flavor but very small and quite hot, ordered the Ahí-tuna again very flavorful and well cooked(just seared)but it lacked something else with it besides a little salad that was like a garnish instead of a side dish and last we tried the Octopus, nice portion but again it was served with just a bun of home made bread, this are main course dishes and they should have some kind of balance, kind of pricy for what you get, nice staff. read more
