Everything was excellent, but the paella was the star of the meal my wife couldn't put her fork down. The drinks were cold, refreshing, and paired perfectly with the food. The only downside was the service at the front. The host seemed a little unfriendly, which wasn't the best first impression. Thankfully, the manager stepped in, was very welcoming, and seated us in the back, which ended up being the perfect spot for a quick bite and a couple of drinks. My family and I came on a Wednesday evening without a reservation and were seated with no wait (the host let us know there was a 9pm reservation on our table, giving us 2 hours to dine.) For 3 people we ordered: the calamari, a lobster roll, a potato side dish, a small vegan paella and a chuzo salad. The food was good but not great - the calamari was nothing special, the lobster roll was a little over salted with the fries not fried enough, the potato dish had texture and the toppings on it had spice + acid, the salad was simple but refreshing, and the finally the vegan paella was well seasoned, strong tomato flavor in the rice and the vegetables were nicely charred. The ambiance of the restaurant felt summery, it was a little humid with a slight wind that evening and they had all doors open allowing the breeze to flow through their space beautifully. Bar Chuzo is doing something really special with Latin cuisine and this meal was proof of that. Creative, bold and intentional, every dish delivered! The Tuna Aguachile was a standout! The sushi grade tuna and avocado layered together in a bright, herbaceous broth that had just the right amount of heat and freshness. The Scallop Crudo was equally impressive, silky smooth scallops with a citrusy, slightly sweet backdrop that let the quality of the fish shine. The Crab Cake was well seasoned and had this beautiful depth of flavor from the Ecuadorian manglar crab, not your average crab cake at all. And the Chicken Chuzo Platter genuinely surprised me. I normally avoid skewer style meats because they tend to come out dry but this chicken was incredibly moist, tender and packed with flavor from the brasa marinade. We sat outdoors on the side of the bar at a cool table underneath and umbrella. It's just what I needed on a cool summer day. We didn't have any reservations, but there were seats open by the bar in high top chairs so we were ushered to the back of the house. As I was the designated driver for the night, I skipped the drinks, but I wasn't skipping on an appetizer. We opted to share the mama's shrimp ceviche, that was fresh and tasty! The plantain chips were a great pairing; super addictive! The kitchen seemed to be backed up at some point during our evening, and our host brought us some homemade guacamole to tie us over, which was incredibly generous and much appreciated! It was the BEST guac I've ever had! We scrapped the plate CLEAN! For the entree, we got the chuzo combo platter with chicken (my personal favorite of the three we got to pick), pork, and the chorizo. Grilled to perfection and great for sharing! The chicken was juicy and packed a flavorful punch with the accompanying chiptole sauce on the side. They also have a drink, it's a Bay Ridge something - I forget the name - that is really nice with fresh fruit muddled in. I've had a few things here before, like their chorizo, and everything is on point. I love their skewers and the sides they come with, just don't dip it in that sauce. Now for the negatives, which should be an easy fix: the food is extremely salty and dry. My paella was dry (never had that happen before). One friend ordered the pork butt and said it was very dry too. We needed to keep drinking water because everything was so salty. We sat at the first table and kept being blown away by the wind... I hope in the winter they address the wind and cold issue - maybe with an exterior protective covering in front or they may not last - it's extremely uncomfortable to eat when freezing and having wind blow directly at you. This was my first visit but it was a wonderful experience. We were greeted cheerfully by a young woman who because we didn't have reservations, literally walked us out through the cold weather to the bar entrance and seated us in a beautiful, corner table. The wait staff was equally charming and attentive and we were directed to the QR code for the menu immediately. It was late afternoon so we opened the Happy Hour menu and it was surprisingly comprehensive. There were cocktails and specialty drinks all discounted for happy hour and a surprisingly large happy hour food menu. The cocktails were excellent (be sure to order a Crystal if you enjoy gin, or an espresso martini which my wife said was excellent) and we ordered Guacamole and chips and oysters which were à la carte and very reasonably priced. My wife doesn't care for oysters so I just ordered a couple for myself. They were beautifully presented on a bed of ice with a fresh lemon, a fresh spicy green mixture instead of horse radish and a sweet but spicy hot sauce. They were wonderful. The guacamole came with home made chips that were thick and well done so they held up to the guac very well. The guac was delicious and a bit chunkier than other places but the texture was wonderful with the thicker chips. For an entree, we chose Chuzos, skewered and grilled chunks of meat (chicken for my wife and NY Strip Steak for me) marinated and grilled to perfection. Both entrees came with large kernel corn which I had never tried before and yuca croquettes, also my first time. The corn was delicious but the kernels were a bit more like beans rather than the corn kernels you might be used to. The yuca croquettes were delicious and probably indistinguishable from potato croquettes in case you are worried you may not enjoy yuca. We actually finished neither entree and the kitchen packed our leftovers carefully for today's lunch (there was PLENTY left over). There was a nice dessert menu but we'll save that for another time. I cannot say enough good things about Bar Chuzo. The staff was friendly and attentive but not hovering or rushing. We went to Bar Chuzo on Friday, March 27th, for the first time, after doing a Google search for the "best paella restaurant in Bay Ridge" and it was outstanding from start to finish. We kicked things off with the guacamole and chips, which were fresh, perfectly seasoned, and a great way to start the meal. The calamari with pico de gallo was light, crispy, and packed with flavor -- not heavy at all, done just right. The highlight of the night was the seafood paella -- absolutely exceptional. It was rich, flavorful, and loaded with perfectly cooked seafood. The blackberry margaritas? Incredible. Refreshing, not overly sweet, and the perfect complement to everything we ordered. Absolutely phenomenal restaurant. The appetizers were undeniably good. Dinners were very good. The service was incredible, the staff was very nice and really told us the very good foods on the menu. The Service was good the tables are to small for multi plates . The sangria is to watered down with ice for $13 . And cup size . We had the Paella for 2 shared the $36. and the mussels and clams were to small the rice was good though. $5. Extra for chorizo is not worth it they grind it into the rice yea how much in it can't see it. The Salads are fantastic the Guacamole and chips very good. For the prices the portions should be a little more . The extra Chorizo is a rip off ! You eat better in New Jersey and get more for that Price ! read more
