An intimate bar in a non-descript Capitol Hill building from the mid 20th century, which feels both cramped and fun, as if you are in a friend's soiree held in their tiny apartment. This is no amateur game when it comes to service and cocktails however. I took a seat at the bar which may have space for about 6 people in a tight fit. It had the worn wooden feel that I have an affinity for (as opposed to the clinical glass and steel sterility of the hideous corporate tower and modern construction). There are hooks under the bar (hooray!). The bar tender was a biochemist by day trade, and had a perfectionist's touch when mixing up my gin drink called "Purple Haze" using lavender-infused gin mixed with another spirit - something almond perhaps. She smoked a stick of thyme and added that aroma to it as well. Very nice touch. The drink was balanced and delicious, not liquor forward which I had specified when the bartender inquired how I like my drinks. Didn't I feel sophisticated sipping this lovely adult beverage in this dingy bar, removed from the hard pavement and roaring I-5 highway outside? Of course the sexy soundtrack of global house music helped and pretty soon I was chatting away with the lovely hostess (she opens the door to let you in once you ring the doorbell at the door outside). Knee High Stocking transports you into a cozy yet quiet space where you can get drinks with friends while having Filipino bites. My friends and I got two cigs at a funeral, one picadillo, and the whisper. All the drinks perfectly aligned with our taste buds. The cig at a funeral had a smoky taste while the picadillo was a bit tangy and the whisper was sweet. We also got some sample bites consisting of lumpia, tater tots, and chicken wings which were very yummy. To end our time at Knee High Stocking we got the Ube bread pudding which was also a great treat! Service was quite slow but we got everything in a duly manner. I go to cap hill all the time and I have never realized this place exists! Maps led me directly to this standalone apartment building, and good thing it was labeled both on the building and with an outdoor propped up cardboard sign. I was meeting friends who were already there. I texted a friend to let them know I arrived because I was a bit confused. I ended up ringing the doorbell and someone let me in very quickly. I let her know I was her with a party already there and she directly led me to the table. The space was quite small. Maybe 2 tables that could fit a decent number of people (my party had 7), bar seating, and a smaller table. We went around 9 PM on a Friday and there was a couple at the bar, and as we left there were maybe two other smaller groups. Normally they have a 2 drink minimum for parties of 5+ apparently but they kindly waived it for us. Their cocktails had fun names. We all got different drinks and tasted them all. I personally really liked all of them, they skewed sweeter which is what I want in a cocktail. Let me start off by saying the vibes at Knee High Stocking are immaculate. It's moody, stylish, and on a night when it's pouring rain outside, feels absolutely like the place to be on a Friday night. Now, maybe I'm shooting myself in the foot here going to a Filipino speakeasy as a Filipino person myself, who's always held to the adage "the best Filipino food is from a friend's kitchen", but the mains didn't hit the spot. The tater tots that supposedly had adobo seasoning tasted like regular tater tots, and my two friends who got pork adobo were disappointed that it was dry. I will say that the lumpia was decent, and so were the calamansi zero-proof cocktails we ordered! The steak tapa I got I enjoyed, even if the garlic rice felt a little too soft. What raised our spirits at the end of a mid-tier meal was the ube bread pudding. I would go back for that dessert alone. But delaying gratification for a seat doesn't get my rocks off; we waited +30 min for our first round, with a reservation, on a cold January Saturday, with less than 40% occupancy. The texture is THE perfect chewy brownie, served warm, and it's sweet while not being too sweet. I"ve always been a sucker for exceptional cocktails served in a speakeasy atmosphere, so when I heard about Knee High Stocking I was really excited to try it; it did NOT disappoint! The door is unmarked and hard to spot. When you find it, you need to use a doorbell to be let in by the doorkeeper. I really liked the vibe once we were inside, and the three of us were seated right away (we had a reservation) and enjoyed watching the bartenders do their magic. Extremely patient, knowledgeable and friendly, our bartender recommended a specialty cocktail for each of us. Through the course of our time at Knee High, we each had two cocktails, and both of mine were excellent! Tip: The place is open until midnight on Friday and Saturday nights. If you come on either of these nights, reservations are strongly advised. Despite the fact that we were there on a Friday night and stayed almost until closing time, we didn't feel any pressure to leave, even when we were virtually the last customers left in the bar :-) While I really enjoyed sitting at the bar, when we come back I'm going to try and snag a table downstairs, as that area looks very cozy and semi-private. The cuisine is Filipino inspired and it is so very, very delicious! Steve and I shared an order of lumpia which we always love but we especially loved Knee High's version! For my actual meal I got the Chicken Adobo bowl. It was so very delicious, flavorful, fresh and a sheer delight to eat! For dessert we got the Ube Bread Pudding which was excellent and finished out an extremely satisfying meal. But we wouldn't be getting the full speakeasy experience if we didn't get some cocktails so we didn't leave that stone unturned at all. I got The Lady in the Streets which was appropriately described as an anise forward cocktail which it certainly was. I personally love anise so I didn't hesitate at all to make that my first cocktail choice and it was wonderfully surreal to my taste buds! Pear of Gibraltar was my second cocktail. It's been a minute since I enjoyed an evening at Knee High. Great company, fantastic food, and drinks. Sadly I was so wrapped up in conversation I forgot to take pics. It means I will need to go back. Three hours, many appetizers, a couple of mains, many inventive drinks... and very good service. We were seated in one of the downstairs rooms, which we had to ourselves for most of the time. I had several drinks, including one made with a cherry-rose shrub. Craft cocktails with the right strength and taste for all the drinks. One of my friends had the Purple Haze with smoking lavender. We had many rounds of select cocktails where we told our server what we wanted as a base, and she returned with some great creations. The food is a fusion of Filipino cuisine with some modern takes. I've spent much time in the Philippines, and everything is the mark. As a vegetarian, I enjoyed the eggplant adobo and veg lumpia. It took a while for our drinks to come but that was okay since we weren't really in any rush. The drinks all had very interesting flavors and were super enjoyable. I think it was on the pricier side ($20+per drink), but if you go during happy hour it's $4 off select drinks. We also got some food which I was not impressed with. We asked for a napkin because we spilled a drink and he said "you'll get your napkins when you get your food with the utensils" we literally just wanted a napkin to clean a spill. Ok lang ("just ok") I've been excited to try this place for a while, but found the overall experience disappointing. The speakeasy vibe was cool and the staff we interacted with were all super great, so let's make that clear. The cocktails were good. Pricey, but good. That's Seattle for you. The food left us wanting... we ordered one of the sampler platters, the meaty one, and found everything was wayyyy over fried. If the tots were ever potato-based, there was no evidence of that remaining. The meatballs were overcooked and under-seasoned. Naturally, we were most excited about the lumpia which sadly made it the most disappointing. The rolls were a tad larger than traditional lumpia, but not rolled as neatly either. Inside, they were filled with air pockets and scant on filling, resulting in the fried wrapping being the dominating flavor. I had the pork adobo tacos for dinner and my partner had the steak tapa rice bowl. Thankfully, these dishes were both much better in general, but still under-seasoned and kind of unremarkable. Obviously tacos are more of a fusion dish - and the pork was certainly Filipino style adobo. But the other flavors in the taco didn't complement or enhance it - it was just kind of chaotic and the adobo got lost in the mix. My partner seemed to enjoy the steak tapa bowl, but it seemed to rely pretty heavily on sriracha mayo for flavor. Maybe the fault here has more to do with the cost of doing business in the city of Seattle, but this meal didn't feel worth the $100+ that we paid for it. The menu tried too hard and fell way short. But I want this place to succeed! I want to go back! I want a meal that I feel good spending this kind of money on! We need more quality Filipino food here! read more

It had been about 9yrs since last Knee High visit. I used to really like their menu and drinks. I still pretty much do but things are different. First the food, it was outstanding and and a totally different menu than times before. Presently it is all Filipino fare. And very tasty. The adobo and adobo carnitas were heavenly. As was the steak rice bowl and chicken wing app. However, the menu items don't match the ambiance or drink selections. Not sure if they are running a rotating menu such as Endoline Joe's in West Seattle. The menu of many years ago blended perfectly with the experience. But again, the food this visit was outstanding. No complaints. The drinks we got were all a little off. Sazerak lacked the bright citrus nose and complexities. I just used "nose" to describe a drink. I'll stop now. One last thing, the drinks are very light on liquor. This is not an issue for me. But worth noting. The funky cozy interior is pretty much unchanged. Still get wafting smells from the bathroom and dishwasher, which they subdue with burning incense. But it's part of the experience. Knee High remains popular and worth the visit. read more

Reservations and the way to go because it doesn't only have maybe 0 or 12 table upstairs, yes there is a downstairs but it wasn't open.Happy out is 6-8 pm, which is awesome instead of the 4-6 pm like other place. It wants to be know for its comfort Filipino food,it was tasty, but the drinks was out of sight,I had two. Our reservation was at 630pm parking was pretty bad I got in the area around 545pm and circle 4 or 5 blocks up and down left and right , for 15 minutes finally park by seattle central in a paid lot. I do admit by looking at the pictures the two meals look the similar but have very different taste, I like but I guess people go there to hang out in the vibe.. I definitely go back and order a bunch of appetizers and way more drinks. I was a big fan of the chalkboard that includes words and phrases in English and their Tagalog translations. I love learning languages and I know a few words in Tagalog, so this was exciting to me. Speaking of which, the food is Filipino cuisine. It's very delicious and I'd highly recommend the steak tapa. Finally, the customer service is top shelf. The guy who was letting people in the door was very kind and gave a face mask to me since I accidentally broke mine on the way over. Our server was very helpful and knowledgeable. This is a pretty fun, though pretty small, absinthe speakeasy in Seattle. You absolutely must have reservations and come in small groups or you will not be able to get in. The outside is relatively incognito though there is a sign by the door with their name. You ring the doorbell and wait for them to open the door and tell you when there's space. The inside has a low lit secretive type of atmosphere with bold green wallpaper, decorative antique chandeliers, and heavy black curtains guarding the windows. It's divided up into two small rooms with a sort of entrance foyer room and then the back room with the wallpapering and bar. The front has a few little tables and chairs packed in which is where we sat, but the bar room is really nice with black leather booths, tables, and bar seating. Our server was very friendly and helpful in navigating the menu for gluten allergy. Three out of four of us are celiac and have to avoid gluten altogether, so you can bet we're a fun table for any server! They have a lot of drink choices including craft cocktails, beer/wine/cider options, lots of liquor selections, and then of course plenty of absinthe. We had an absinthe sampler, a tiki flower, and a couple other mixed drinks. They don't have a ton of gf food options but there were a few things we could a least nibble on. We had the potatas bravas which were crispy and delicious and she said the drummies were gf but they are marinated in soy sauce so I passed on those, but the husband of mine loved them. Came here with two friends. As a heads up, they only take reservations by text. Waiting -- We got to our 10pm reservation 20 minutes early. You have to wait outside since the door is locked. Unfortunately for us, we had to wait in the cold for 30 minutes (we were all freezing by the time we got inside). 3/5 waiting experience. Ambiance -- Inside, the ambiance is warmly lit and the room has a dark interior. The tables in front are pretty close together, so you'll be able to hear other groups' conversations. The group next to us was unreasonably loud and undeniably turnt. Food and drink -- Their kitchen closes at 10. However, the waitress was nice enough to ask the chef to make us their delicious ube bread pudding (5/5, so good). We also got a round of drinks each. Worst dining experience I've had in years. Food was devoid of flavor. I asked for extra spicy and was told I would receive extra sauce and peppers.... This didn't happen. Drink was made wrong twice and service took forever and had to flag the servers down. I've been twice prior and liked it...... after this time I don't see going back. Sad. read more

Knee High Stocking is definitely worth a visit if you can get a reservation. That process is different--it is all done via text, where you will have a time you need to show up. It is not much to look at on the outside and not that easy to find. Make sure to just show up on time--we rang bell six minutes early, but were not let in until our reservation time. It is tight and cozy on the inside, with a really cool look and feel. In addition to the upstairs area, there is also seating downstairs (where the restrooms are). We sat at the bar. The bartender was excellent. The drink menu is really unique. Both drinks I had were great--one was a version of an Old Fashioned (really good) and then the other was a mix of liquor that was strong but very complex and delicious. They are on pricy side (kind of what you would expect), but definitely worth it. It is connected to a Filipino place with a walk-up window (I have reviewed that separately and love the food). We had already had dinner, so just had the Tres Leches cake that was very good. We had a really nice time and will be back. read more
