I was in need of a makeup artist for a photo shoot for my new website. I found Knotty NYC on Instagram and scheduled an appointment. My photoshoot was during COVID and I was nervous about the shoot, and a makeup artist being so close to my face, etc. When I made the appointment the process was seamless, the follow-up email answered all my concerns about COVID in advance. Fast forward to the day of my shoot, it was located in a deserted area of Brooklyn and my makeup artist, Andrew was on time, professional, funny, and ready to glam my face. He did so with his mask fully on the whole time and he was very attentive to asking me about what I wanted and he executed perfectly. I found this service because of Refinery29. Before I booked, I called to inquire about the length of my hair because I was previo shaved off all my hair and it has now grown into a TWA. I got to speak to the owner, Tiffany and she was nice and professional and suggested I do the small lemonade braids.. MY stylist was Amanda. She is currently the only one that travels to NJ, where I'm at. She was 40 minutes late because of her uber but she openly communicated that and gave me a heads up. Overall, the experience was very nice. Amanda was professional, polite, and done in roughly 3 hours. I'm very happy with my hair and I would definitely use the service again! read more

I gave them two stars for the service they provided on my first three appointments with them - albeit each time they were slower than the time before. My most recent experience with them however, was unacceptable. I booked them for the day before my birthday just so I wouldn't run late for my reservation. They have no actual salon that they're paying rent on and yet it still cost $300 for my box braids even though i still needed to wash and blow dry my own hair before the appointment. Fine - that seems to be the way all these instagram businesses operate - by putting the brunt of their work on their customer and still charging a premium. They only accept paypal and its all up front before your appointment so it was a bit of an inconvenience, but i was happy enough with their finished product in the past and pushed on. I was willing to look past the lack of hospitality because at least in the past they showed up on time and did the job. Unfortunately the afternoon before - they decided to cancel on me because their stylist is sick and did it in the most passive aggressive way. First they sent me a cancellation by email at 4:06 and then a text at around 7 PM saying they told me "earlier". I feel like if you're going to cancel the day before - that should be a text immediately. They ask if i can reschedule my appointment and i express how inconvenient it is to find another stylist so last minute with this cancellation. For some reason the moron who decided to do costumer service that day felt the appropriate response was "oh we're not cancelling, we're rescheduling." Last time i checked - customers reschedule not the business owner or person providing service. Not to mention they didn't even have availability the next day/day of my event to make up for it so i just found that entire exchange super rude and unnecessary. Its super disingenuous to frame a cancellation due to your poor planning/lack of a backup option as a business as a simple "reschedule" when it comes at your customers expense. That exchange alone broke any trust I had in their service and i certainly won't be booking them in the future. Maybe I would feel different and more accommodating of their employees emergency if they hadn't tried to gaslight me about it. read more

An in-home braiding service? Yes please! This was my first time trying Knotty and I'm thoroughly impressed. My hair is currently pixie length (which is not the easiest to braid) and Lonique slayed my cornrows. She was super gentle and paid attention to every detail from creating the perfect consistency to perfectly laid baby hairs. I was looking for a new braiding salon to get medium knotless braids and came across Knotty on a refinery29 article. I saw that they had a physical location and I decided to book since it' was convenient. I was able to find an early Sunday time despite having booked only one week in advance which is very difficult to do for most braiding salons. You do have to provide your own hair and wash/blow out before you come. Though they are able to wash/blowout with an extra fee. The salon is located in a building in kingsland jams. The quickest way to get in is to search for knotty in the directory in the door to get buzzed in. The confirmation email linked an email to reach out to get into the building(so this should probably get updated). It is in a cute decent sized unit that holds 2 braiding chairs. They provide drinks as well as music in the background. I booked with Mia since she had availability and my experience with her was absolutely was absolutely amazing! I only bought 3 packs of hair instead of 4 for (medium, waist length, knotless box braids). For this hairstyle 4.5 is usually recommended but Mia was able to make it work and gave me the results I wanted. Overall the whole process lasted from 9:30-3:45pm which I feel is pretty standard for the style. I would highly recommend booking with Mia because she is super friendly, professional, and attentive. She asked me multiple times if I needed to get up and stretch and regularly checked in with me to see how I was doing. read more

Amanda has been doing my medium knotless braids every month for the past three months. I love my hair! I usually keep my braids in for 4 weeks, but I could actually have them in longer because of how well she does them. The knotless braids don't add any tension to my hair and that is why I keep getting them. Amanda is super fast at braiding my hair, so she spends three hours or less doing my entire head of hair. I get so many compliments on my hair. Amanda has also given me tips on maintaining my braids.
