They offer you a free drink of choice with your appointment and even gel eye bags when at the bowl. I had about two drinks before leaving and was feeling nice! The stylist (younger lady) assigned to do my hair did not say hello and simply asked me to follow her to the wash station. She did not ask any questions about my hair or explain what products she was using or what she was doing. After my hair was washed and conditioned, another stylist took over for the silk press. She was the same woman who had welcomed me at the front desk, and I was relieved because she actually spoke to me and asked a few questions about my hair. She began preparing my hair for the blow-dry, and I felt very comfortable with how she was handling it. Unfortunately, the original stylist came over and asked to take my hair back because she did not want to work on another customer's hair. I overheard that it may have been because the other customer's hair was too thick. In retrospect, that was my sign to ask to remain with the second stylist, but I decided to give the original stylist the benefit of the doubt. I noticed that the products she used were different from those the previous stylist had applied to the back section of my hair. I mentioned that the other stylist had used three or four products, which made me feel more comfortable because I was concerned about heat damage. She responded dismissively, saying, "I have my own products." It did not feel as though enough product had been applied, although I cannot be certain because I could not see exactly what she was doing. I explained that I was not trying to be difficult. I had recently taken down my locs, my hair was fragile, and I was worried about breakage and heat damage. She said okay and continued. She then attempted to dry about a quarter of my hair at once using a fine round brush instead of dividing it into smaller sections first. I grimaced, and she stopped, switched to a blow-dryer brush, and began working in smaller sections. I will acknowledge that she tried to be gentler after seeing my reaction. Unfortunately, the silk press and trim were very underwhelming. By the time I arrived home after a short 30-minute drive, my hair had already reverted. I had not been to a traditional salon in more than 15 years, aside from visiting locticians, so this experience was especially disappointing. Needless to say, I will not be returning and would not recommend this salon. I believe I would have had a much better experience if I had asked to continue with the second stylist.

I booked online but followed up on the phone because I had some questions. The woman I spoke with was friendly and helpful. Ongele was also very friendly and easy to talk to. She has a very chill vibe. I showed her photos of what I thought I would like, but made it clear that I wasn't looking for a big change at my first appointment. She completely agreed with me and said she preferred to get to know me first. This was definitely going in the right direction. We chatted while she cut my hair and then she gave me some pointers on drying and styling it and when she was done....OMG! It was exactly what I wanted - actually no - it was better than what I wanted! I literally couldn't have been happier. AND....I think I'll be able to reproduce the look at home, thanks to her instructions. I would highly recommend Ongele at Shine in the Heights!

There is a specially designed head spa table that is used that is highly functional and comfortable. Hong is very knowledgeable and made sure to do a thorough analysis of my daughter's scalp prior to beginning her treatment. To prevent my daughter from getting her shirt wet, Hong provided a special towel to wear instead of her shirt. After lying down, she offered my daughter a lavender scented or unscented eye mask to further the relaxation during treatment. She then began a series of treatments including the use of special brushes to massage the scalp, removing dead skin cells. That was followed by the use of a hair steam treatment, and a neck and arm massage was provided during that time. The treatment was completed with some heat damage prevention products prior to her blow drying. I loved how personable, knowledgeable, and professional the treatment went. We will definitely be back.
