The process of finding a new hairstylist can be really traumatic. I ended up getting referred to Ongele by someone on NextDoor and she could not have been more perfect for me! I booked online but followed up on the phone because I had some questions. The woman I spoke with was friendly and helpful. Ongele was also very friendly and easy to talk to. She has a very chill vibe. I showed her photos of what I thought I would like, but made it clear that I wasn't looking for a big change at my first appointment. She completely agreed with me and said she preferred to get to know me first. This was definitely going in the right direction. We chatted while she cut my hair and then she gave me some pointers on drying and styling it and when she was done....OMG! It was exactly what I wanted - actually no - it was better than what I wanted! I literally couldn't have been happier. Parking is in the back and I never have issues finding a spot. I have seen 3 stylists here - Konstantine, Tristan, and Rylee. Loved the cut from all 3 of them. My only criticism is that Rylee did not give me a scalp massage -- which is half of the reason for coming in for a cut for me! Konstantine's price went up from $80 (early 2023) to $105 (late 2023). The shampoo chairs and sink are the type where your head lies on the sink, so I find it so much more comfortable than regular shampoo sinks at other salons. read more

Huge shout out to Tristan and the whole staff at Shine! ***late post*** Needed a haircut on the fly, booked an appointment, and the whole process was so easy. Walked into my appointment, immediately greeted and the staff member offered me a water...I waited since I was a little early to my appointment. Tristan came and got me, sat down in his chair, minimally described to him what I wanted, no photo for reference, and he chopped away! Tristan was so kind, patient, and listened to what I wanted out of my haircut and really delivered!! He wasn't too chatty, but not too quiet either! Anyone would be lucky to have Tristan cut their hair! I've gotten so many compliments on my fresh cut! It's low maintenance, affordable, and exactly what I needed! The whole vibe at Shine is great! I don't cut my hair often but if I need another cut, I'll definitely come back! If I could suggest one thing, to relay that parking is limited and street parking is encouraged. There are a few spots on gravel behind the salon studio but it's tiny and cramped. Firstly I want to say everyone was friendly and kind during my experience and I should have been more direct about what I wanted (exact trim length). However, I went in stating I would like "a trim", "wanted to maintain my length as much as possible" and that I was "trying to grow my hair out". Before the haircut my length was to my waist but the ends were damaged. My stylist showed me what appeared to be about 2 inches of length to which I agreed and she took at least 4 inches off if not more. My hair now fall just below my shoulders. I'm deeply saddened and disappointed at the lack of consideration for what I feel was clearly stated. It takes a considerable amount of time to grow my hair and I've lost years of length. Why I will NEVER go back to Shine: 1. They lie. I was told I would have an experienced stylist. This was volunteered; I did not ask for it. It seems to be a marketing ploy. My stylist was a nice person. She did a terrible job. 2. One side was cut short and badly tapered so badly it lays flat. The other side has a helmut-like layer that sticks up in ways it never has. 3. The neckline looked like an old man whose hair was cut straight and that inevitably separates into thin ugly strands. I had to fix it at home with my own scissors. 4. This stylist had no clue how to taper a cut either in the back or side. The cut was grossly imbalanced from side to side and the length in the back was at odds with the weird layering of the sides. 5. This experience was end of November. I decided to wait to write this review to see if it was a better cut than it seemed. No. It is a terrible cut and of course just gets worse. It is almost long enough now to where I can get it reshaped, so I will have it dealt it. But it has been a miserable month. 6. If you have short hair, DO NOT BELIEVE THEM IF THEY TELL YOU THE STYLIST IS EXPERIENCED. I feel bad for the stylist being asked to do something she clearly could not do. I grew up in a hair salon and know that her mistakes were rookie mistakes. She was nervous and should never have been assigned to me. I'm new in town, and went to Yelp for recommendations for a good colorist in the Heights. Yelp directed me to Shine in the Heights, and I'm so happy it did! Jordan worked magic with my over-bleached, ridiculously ginger, and tired hair. He went above and beyond, taking my somewhat ambiguous directive and really spinning a beautiful flair on it. Not only that, but he was absurdly fastidious with every aspect of my hair. (On top of his excellent work, he is also a wonderful conversationalist.) I scheduled a last minute appointment with Mary on 4/5. I had long, straight hair with no layers. I have had my hair cut by several stylists at Shine and was always content with the results. During the consultation, I asked Mary to cut three inches off my hair and do a bit of face framing. She then asked if I wanted layers and I said sure. At the salon, the haircut looked a little off but I just assumed it was how she styled it. Once I got home, I realized how choppy and inconsistent the layers are. They are not blended at all. The top layers are ridiculously short and then seem to stop halfway down my head. I am very disappointed in this haircut and embarrassed by how I look. read more

I was searching for a new hair salon and chose Shine in the Heights as I wanted to donate my hair (they offer 20% for haircuts with a donation) I was going from super long hair to a pixie cut, and the salon recommended that I go with Savana, as she is their resident pixie cut expert. It was a great choice! Savana listened to what I wanted and did a really great job of "reading" what my hair naturally wanted to do. Backstory: I wanted a hairstyle/hair color that would blend in with the grey hair so I was set on highlights. My hair is naturally very dark and I have dyed it black in the past so I already knew I wasn't going to be able to get it to a very light color. Experience: They have great customer service but thinking back on it I think my stylist was a little nervous about doing my hair. She was super nice and Made me feel like I was in good hands since I was also a bit nervous about doing something different to my hair. I was originally in for full highlights and she talked me in to do half. She also said she wouldn't be able to get the highlights so light which was something I already knew but said she could get them to a caramel color. I was ok with the results but not completely happy about them since you can't really see the highlights. They are still dark and more on a reddish tone. There is definitely no way this will hide or blend in my grey hair. The stylist recommended coming back in 6-8 weeks and maybe she can do full highlights then. The price felt a little high for the outcome. I also got a little trim but it was really just to even my hair out since my last stylist at another place left it a tad bit uneven. I didn't set my appointment for the next visit yet since I am still wondering if I should go back. I keep on editing this review because I want to be nice but also honest about my feelings. Updated 9/5/2021 with more pictures. Gabriella (Gabby) was very nice and welcoming throughout my entire hair appointment. I enjoyed talking with her, and she made me feel welcome throughout the experience. I also appreciated how nice all of the other staff were while I was there. However, I am feeling kinda disappointed with my haircut. My bangs are a decent bit thicker than I was expecting (I wanted wispier bangs and these are pretty full, but I'm okay with them), and since coming home, I've realized that my requested layers are uneven/choppy in several places. At the front especially, the asymmetry is more noticeable in the hair framing my face. The right side of my head also looks like it was cut in a bowl shape where the layers don't really blend. This pattern isn't repeated on the left. I thought it was a bit strange while the hair was actually being cut, but I didn't question it until I actually got home and was able to look at my hair more closely. On this side, there is also a substantial difference in length between different layers. It's just hair and I can make it work, but it wasn't what I was envisioning when I went in. Not the worst haircut I've ever paid for, though definitely not the best either. Overall, cute salon with nice people, just probably not my cup of tea for future haircuts or hair services. After there was a mishap with a "tangle" and some "scissors" at home... I took my 12 yo daughter in to see, Kyle, for color, and, Eleanor, for cut and WOW, they did such an amazing job! My daughter was already feeling a little down on herself for the tangle and scissor debacle at home, but Kyle was so kind and soft spoken to her, he made her feel comfortable and hopeful her hair would be okay! Eleanor was fierce with her sheers and gave her the best textured bob cut ever, and was sweet by being a great listener as my daughter is a talker like her mom lol! This place is high in their prices but I'm new in town and was willing to pay a little more for great service and talent. When I left I had hair dye all over my forehead and the side of my face. I went back into the salon after seeing it in my car mirror. They wiped my forehead down but didn't offer me a mirror to check for myself. Got back in the car and saw it was still the same. I went back inside the salon and said it was still there. They wiped me down again and the dye was slightly less visible on my for head. TL;DR Terrible haircut, unprofessional stylist, told me he "didn't know how to fix this" mid cut, now have choppy chunky layer haircut when I asked for subtle face framing. Needed my hair done before my upcoming engagement photos, called to explain what I wanted to do with my hair, and the receptionist gave me a few names. I then picked out my stylist Tristan based on their Instagram photos and was mainly looking for how well they do color. I booked a consultation with them and they were confident in their ability to glaze my hair closer to my natural color and give me some natural feathery face framing pieces. My old face framing pieces were just really grown out. I booked an appointment and doing my color all went fine. They asked me to remind them what I needed for my cut and I said some subtle face framing pieces with natural feathered ends, no big chunky layers, and length to stay about the same. They said my hair was very healthy and length could definitely stay the same. I also said I don't really style my hair so I need something that looks good air-dried. Then Tristan started cutting off a lot of hair and going section by section cutting it vertically in the air and not really checking how it laid. Their hands were extremely shaky too. I immediately noticed how it looked like they were giving me layers. I commented again how I really like a natural look and didn't want chunky layers. After the cut, Tristan separated my hair to begin blowdrying in sections. I asked if they were done cutting or if they'd do more once it was dry to clean it up. They said they were done cutting and they were ready to style. I was like okay well can I look at it before it's all styled so I can see what the cut actually looks like. That's when I was able to see that the cut was a hot mess--giant chunky layers on top of my head, "face framing" pieces laying like thick rectangles that were made up of the whole top layer of my head, blunt jagged ends. I politely pointed these things out to them and they said once it was blow dried it would look better. I sit in the chair freaking out internally while they blow dry my hair and then they get out a straightener to try to curl the chunky thick pieces under my chin and hide the mess. I still am not saying anything and they're going at it with the straightener making my hair steam, saying my hair "just won't lay right." Yeah, because the cut is a nightmare. Still, I say nothing because I'm about to burst into tears and Tristan says "I don't really know how to fix this I'm gonna go get someone." Just what everyone wants to hear during a haircut! Mary shows up and says she can try to blend it all better but there's not much more she can do without making me lose a ton of length but "hair grows back, short is so in right now, you look like Jennifer Anniston!" and I said I didn't come in for The Rachel, I wanted my length to stay the same, I don't like having to style layers. So she does her best to fix the mess and blends it out to be in pretty good shape given the circumstances. Very thankful for all her work on it, but because of the original bad cut, I have random pieces on the top layer of my head that are a good inch shorter than my face framing pieces (???) and it's overall a terrible hair cut and I lost a lot of length. It's not what I asked for at all. My original stylist vaporized by the way, literally didn't them again, they never apologized, never came to see how it was fixed to make this a learning lesson for them, literally just vanished. Very unprofessional. At checkout, the receptionist said it would be half off the haircut. I greatly appreciate that but in retrospect I can't believe I gave them even a dollar for anything. I tipped Mary $10 because I assumed what I paid for my glaze would be for the original stylist, and honestly I shouldn't have had to pay that stylist period. All in all very disappointed with my experience and didn't expect this after seeing all the good reviews. Be careful about who you select and ask for a color AND cut person. Apparently people who know only how to do color are still allowed to cut hair when they obviously lack the skills, training, and experience to do actual cuts on clients. read more

I love Shine, but I really love Mary!!! She is a fantastic colorist and stylist and always does a wonderful job with my hair. I've been dying my hair a deep burgundy/cranberry color for around five years and used to DIY, but for the two years or so I've had Mary do it. And WOW, it makes a difference! Idk what she does, but the color lasts so much longer and is incredibly vibrant. I only have to get it done every 8 weeks or so, and sometimes it lasts even longer. You'd think that all that hair dye would leave my hair frazzled, but whatever Mary does makes it silky soft and very shiny. She also does a great job with the cut--my blunt bob and baby bangs always look super sharp! I get compliments on my hair all the time, thanks to Mary :) The salon itself is very pleasant. They play fun music, and in non-covid times, they offer beverages like wine which makes it extra fun! Highly recommend!!! read more

Shine in the Heights is located in a house whereas Shine on the Heights is located in a shopping center. I got confused and went to the wrong location. The parking lot is a little rough getting into since it's behind the house and kind of narrow. My hairstylist was talented, but kind of rough with the execution of it. She was nice, but should have asked questions like "Is the water too hot?", given me a time frame of how long I needed to wait for the color to set and asked if the cut was the right length. The color process was rough b/c she used a color brush and got it all over my face. The shampoo job wasn't enjoyable b/c I felt like I was getting clawed and my scalp was a little sensitive to the extremely hot water. During the styling part, she had a roller brush dangling for a good 30 sec or so in front of my face. I don't like having to tell the stylist to tame the flyaways and then getting hairspray all over my face. She should have given me a mirror to see the back part. I didn't exactly love my hair at the end, but when I went home, I realized that it's exactly what I asked for and it looks healthier. My first experience here was awesome. My second experience...ended with my hair turning green 3 hours after I left. I went in for a white out. I wanted to see if I could get my hair pure white. That didn't quite work out so instead we went for light gray silver. When I looked in the mirror my hair was beige. But no worries. We just decided let's do a gray dye. Not what I wanted, but I can live with it. And when it was done, while it did look a little dark, I said I was still good with the results even though it wasn't the original white out. I should never have said I was okay with it because 3 hours later, I now have pond scum green hair. I wanted a new look before I go for a two-week training seminar for new employees that I'm going to be leading. I guess I still have a new look for them. Date of appt 9/30/22 @9am. Stylist Emily Rose. This was my worst hair experience ever. Went for a retouch balayage to be blonder and came out with basically brown hair. The bleached areas she did got covered up with dark hair dye and dark toner. My hair looks worse now then when I just had my roots grown out. Doesn't even look like I got my roots done at all. It looks patchy and not well blended. Even after all the teasing she did, which only caused more damage to my hair. When getting brushed out, I would see chunks of my hair falling from her pulling so hard. After I made a surprised face of seeing all the hair that was coming onto the brush she simply said, "oh that comes with being blonde, expect breakage" instead of trying to be more careful and gentle with hair that just got processed. When she applied the toner/roots it was so messily applied that it was getting all over my clothes and my blonde pieces. I was left with a very noticeable dark spot in the front of my head from the drips of toner that was getting everywhere. After washing that out I was hoping it was going to give the results we had talked about, and be similar to the reference pictures we looked at together before starting the process. As soon as she blow dried my hair and I saw one piece completely dry to show the end result, I freaked out! My hair was so much darker than what it was when I walked in there. When she asked if I liked it, I immediately said, "no, this is not the color I wanted it's so dark" I got up from the chair went to the restroom and literally cried. For anyone out there that has blonde hair and is naturally a brunette you can understand how HARD it is to maintain that blonde and how much damage your hair takes to be that light. And just like that someone ruined it so easily by applying a dark color on top. Honestly I don't understand what happened, I don't know if she picked the wrong color or what. But this is not okay. I didn't let her finish blow drying my hair, i just walked to the register with my hair soaked. I payed $300 for my hair to basically get burned, pulled out, and damaged. Worst part is, her excuse was that I asked to be darker. And that's a complete lie! Once I got home, I went on instagram to look up her page up, and found that she blocked me. Salon is nice. Loved Elissa when I got a cut back in November. However I just got a cut a few days ago by Brenda and I'm in tears. It's so hideous. Like a version of the Rachel from friends, except I specifically said NO LAYERS. There are layers above my ears. I have thin hair and its the worst cut I've ever had in my life. I emailed them and got no response. I plan to call and ask for a refund tomorrow. My husband, sister and my kids all agree that it is awful. "Hair grows" they said. My daughter suggested I wear a hat or pin it up for 6 months. Husband said "at least you have a cute face". There's no way to fix it because it's so short. I'm not high maintenance, but I'm so disappointed. Do not use Brenda. Use Elissa. And make sure you pay attention. I had such a wonderful experience at Shine in the Heights with Tim! I rarely get to pamper myself (especially with a haircut) so it was so nice to be greeted by such a lovely person like Tim. Really, the whole staff that I interacted with were friendly and helpful, which I greatly appreciated. Tim is a talented stylist who took time to understand my regular routine so that any tips he had could be incorporated easily and I love the haircut. Gets me in and out in a reasonable time-frame even for lengthier services (like balayage) so I can still do other things throughout the day, fun to chat with during appointments, and I've always loved how my hair looks after - seriously he does an amazing job at figuring out the best cut and color for your face shape and skin tone. As for Shine in the Heights - friendly front desk that was quick to greet, cute establishment with a boutique feel (matches the Heights vibe well) - it's 1000x more comfortable than your standard mall hair salon, prices are reasonable, and complimentary wine was a nice touch!
