The Safeway grocery store is convenient, located not far away from the airport. They have all the…read moredaily essentials, plenty of supplies for locals and tourists, despite some items could be pricey than other places. I like how spacious and clean it is, and staff are friendly as well.

Should have done more research before coming here…read more Grocery poke is surprisingly good in Hawaii, so tried to find the nearest supermarket near our hotel in Kauai. Our lunch on Day 3 had been a bust, so decided to eat in more and get needed supplies. I knew that Safeway was affiliated with Albertson's, which I THOUGHT owned Foodland (which has great poke)...so came here and bought other stuff (cause we were already there). Later found out that my assumption was incorrect. The employees here are tired of tourists, I think. The woman at the seafood counter (which has a small poke section), acted like she was doing me a favor when I asked for the rest of the fresh hawaiian style poke. When I asked how good the from-frozen ahi poke was, she mumbled something unintelligible. Cashiers don't have to be friendly but should be at least respectful, and appear as if trying The lane was open, so it wasn't too busy. She barely acknowledged us but did scan each item without being asked (and we were self self bagging). But then there was a pause to push the process to start the payment process. Then another long pause after I had entered my credit card. Then another pause to print receipt. Then finally after printing, she grabbed the receipt without looking at it and just stuck out her hand AT me to grab without looking at me. The last two actions were happening while she was having a funny (to her) conversation with a co-worker. Not good when two employees together are acting like this without shame. A part of me wanted to lightly slap her receipt-holding hand and tell her "Didn't your mama teach you manners?". Purchases: -- 2 bagels ($1.19 each) -- small Lucerne milk ($2.89) -- small cream cheese ($5.99) -- fresh (not frozen) ahi tuna ($29.99 per pound, paying $21.29). -- six pack can of Maui Brew Mango Beer ($14.99 with Dep fee of $0.30 -- PB Blondie Bestie ice cream from Ben and Jerry, pint for $4.99 (normally $8.99 but on sale so very good price...needed to download the Safeway app since my Von's or Albertson's card doesn't work...had good free wi-fi in store).

Costco is the place to go to reduce the overwhelming costs of inflation. Granted- it is still…read moreexpensive and I have notice my purchased went from $250 a week to $400 plus. Still it is obviously the best place to get the most for your buck. Our location has some distinct qualities that you may want to know before you go. 1) this is a local gathering place, if your expecting a Costco-RAT-Race, like the mainland, think again. People often stop to give hugs and aloha to friends they see, staying to chat in inconvenient areas to tourist (I am totally guilty of this, and I love seeing my friends, students and their families- you just got to send them your "ALOHA") This may be annoying to some people, but it is a way of life here- so just be happy to have a little slice of aloha. 2) they don't always have stock- Tuesdays are a great day to go. Lastly, 3) checking out. If you choose to self-check out... you may be confused. As it stands now, and for a really long time, there is one line to stand in for 3 lanes of check out. Is it logical: no. Does it confuse visitors and even people like me: yes. For some reason, Costco wants all self-checkout folks to stand in one line and then go calmly and orderly to whichever of the 3 checkout lane openings is free. This really confuses visitors, and sometimes even leaves them with stink eye or scoldings from the locals. After all, those who live on Kauai have been trained to the 1 line system. About 1/2 the time, there is a staff that alerts the next person to go to the available self-check out, but where they are not there, or need to assist someone with self-checkout or review and ID for alcohol: they are not there. I am really not sure why they have kept this single line system, rather than having 3 lines, but I guess there must be some reason for this. Does anyone know? 4) Please be kind to the staff, offer some aloha to them- Q, Carry and Deb are some of my favorite folks. Costco always tolerates me coming in costume as Darth Vadar and Princess Leia. This Costco is part of the aloha experience- please treat it with love. ***** If you are an executive member- this Costco is opening earlier for you! Make sure you check the times, this Saturday they opened at 8:45am and weekdays they open at 9am for the Executive Members. Enjoy and alooooha!

It was our last day in Kauai, and didn't want to spend our time at the airport, waiting for our…read moreredeye flight. So decided to go to Costco to see if their optical department could tighten my Costco glasses before heading back to the mainland. The optical department closes earlier than the store itself, so we ended up wandering around. We intentionally went there on the last day after our luggage had been packed, thinking it would prevent us from buying things to bring back. But there were two things that we don't see on the mainland, that were of good price: 1.5 Coffee beans from Molokai Estate Coffee (100% from Molokai, and which my wife confirmed later was very good) and a Ube cream Liquor from the Philippines, that went great with the said coffee. Both fit in our checked bags and made it home safe. It wasn't too crowded because it was close to closing and was of large size, including self checkout lanes. Another good visit to Costco.

I visited Safeway in Kapaʻa, Kauaʻi, Hawaii [4-831 Kuhio Hwy] on Thursday, 01/22/26 around 11:30…read moreAM. This location offered a wide variety of food options, including ready-made meals, hot foods, deli selections, and more, making it a convenient stop for quick bites or grocery shopping. What stood out most was the handcrafted sushi selection from Zenshi. There was an impressive variety of rolls to choose from, including California Rolls, Spicy California Rolls, Crunchy Rolls, Rainbow Rolls, Crunchy Shrimp Tempura Rolls, and Seaside Combos. They also offered additional items like Summer Rolls, Big Wave Poke Bowls, Spam Norimaki, and Calamari Salad, which added to the overall selection. I decided to try two Rainbow Rolls. The quality of the sushi was decent; not bad, but not particularly outstanding either. The taste was tolerable enough, especially considering the fairly reasonable price point. Overall, Safeway provides standard food offerings for customers and gets the job done. Clean grocery store and well-stocked along with plenty of parking and friendly associates.
