Whalers was super convenient - a short walk from our hotel. If you drove there, there seemed to be plenty of parking spaces. This is really a variety store: limited fresh food, some packaged food, some convenience food and a whole lot of tourist items (some essentials and some stuff). We bought some opportunity items to help keep our costs of vacationing down. The staff was extremely helpful and efficient (there is a lot of stuff here, so finding a specific item was a bit tough for me without assistance). read more

Much higher prices than ABC Store, likely because it's so close to many high-end/luxury resorts. They carry apparel (but for some reason not women's swimwear), souvenirs, snacks, and ready-made foods like fruit bowls, salads, and bento bowls. If you come in the mornings, look for food and snacks that are marked down 50%! It'll be the cheapest meal you can get in the area! Also, don't make the same mistake I did, and be sure to heat up your bento bowls before leaving the store! I got back to the hotel and had to eat them cold lol! read more

High prices and no women's swimming suits, but you can get some ready made foods on clearance which can be made into an incredible meal. Men and children cam get swimwear here and there are many fresh fruit and vegetables that are prepared and ready for snacking at this location. I had a $6.99 clearance chicken salad with champagne dressing and cranberries and it was honestly the best meal I had on the island. I also had some $3.99 clearance pineapple with li-hing powder. 10/21/22 Looking for a souvenir for a friend & hubby is on the hunt for a hat, and a kick board for me. I'm looking for a fridge magnet. I like the idea of getting souvenirs that are either eaten or something useful, something that won't collect dust (well the magnet might) I prefer useful items so each time the person that I'm giving it to will remember who or where it's from all the while being handy. Plus it's small & not bulky to add weight in the luggage on the trip back. The fridge magnet is perfect, just stick it on the fridge, you see it each time to open the fridge & you put a note on it. There are limited options around this neck of the woods but if you're looking for gifts, general groceries and desserts, this is the place to get it. We were here to pick up some snacks and meals for the trip back and were able to score a few good sized salads, sandwiches, chips, etc for reasonable prices. There salads were "on sale" and they had plenty of vegan and vegetarian options. Most of the items are fairly marked up because of supply and demand. Nothing to write home about but a good spot to grab essentials. You can find plenty of souvenir items (think shirts, chocolate, coffee, etc) if you're needing a last minute Kauai gift, but you can also stop by ABC store on your way out. read more

Lots of random stuff. Souvenirs, snacks, sandwiches, ice cream bars, sodas... Pretty much anything you can think of, you just might find it. We even found strawberry flavored Its-Its ice cream and we haven't seen those in our home-base of California. The prices are slightly higher than other places for similar items, and there is so much to choose from you may get stuck not being able to decide what to get, but it's worth stopping by to consider the wares. We took a day to decide on a particular hat, and happy we came back and bought it. Whalers general store in poipu shopping center. I live on Kauai and the cashier tried to charge me .21¢ for a paper bag to put me and my sons food in. Me and my son go into whalers in poipu shopping center to get food a lot of times none of the other cashiers charged me for a paper bag ever. The law is a store can only charge up to .15¢ for paper bags the cashier should be fired for trying to make me pay .21¢ when the law is mandatory up to .15¢ they are trying to rip off the locals on Kauai which is wrong. We pay the high price to live here just like the cashiers in whalers general store. Bring your own paper bag or a reusable bag. Only 1 cashier tried to over charge for a paper bag. read more

A short woman (likely Sunday shift) cashier is probably the subject of every negative review here, yet the owner or manager has not acknowledged anything, let alone actioning on it. This cashier goes out of her way to ruin every customer's day. She somehow manages to keep her customer service job by pretending deaf and blind to customers. Amusing. read more

This is a nice store with prices slightly higher than ABC stores. They had good stock & a nice selection of baked goods. I bought the guava & banana breads. Since I had already bought the majority of my souvenirs at the ABC store, I only bought the baked goods, which were fresh & delicious. The staff here were not friendly or welcoming. Expensive! Rude! Expensive! Rude! Avoid this store at all costs! Their prices are greater than hotel shops. Plan ahead for all of your food, snacks, wine and beer and anything else. Stop at stores on your way into the area. If not, you will pay nearly double what stores charge in other parts of the island. Besides being outrageously expensive, several of the cashiers are very rude! Most everyone we meet on the islands are very friendly, but there are a couple of staff here that should not be interacting with customers. So if you like overpaying for things and being treated rudely at the same time, this is the place for you. read more

We were there the week after Thanksgiving picking up last minute souvenirs. I saw a small Humpback Whale book the cover was ripped. There were no others. The General Manager (Brandon) happened to be in the store and the cashier asked if I could get a discount, I offered $10.00 for a $13.00 book. He rudely said no, all he had to do was to send the book back to the supplier and he could get a whole refund. Three dollars and no Aloha attitude was not good service for a customer buying other things there. Poor service, I hope next time you consider customer service. read more

Prices mediocre, but because the Poipu area has hardly anything, this place has a phuckin monopoly. The only other "competitor" I can think of is the Longs Drugs store kinda nearby. Not much to choose from. This general store is hella small and not much variety of stuff. If you are desperate, you can find some not-so-well-priced knick knacks to get by (snacks, souvenirs, grocery store stuff) but your wallet would be gouged for it and be prepared to not find the exact item you want. This is one of those stores you would go to when you are desperate for "living supplies" during a vacay. read more

Great little spot across from some of the hotels to get souvenirs. I wouldn't suggest you make it your grocery store trip, but snacks, trinkets or travel essentials are here and reasonably priced (for it being Hawai'i). They have the usual shot glasses, beach items and name souvenirs (if you don't have a weird name). But they also have some fun items. I found a super cute pineapple reusable bag to bring back for a friend. It's in a plaza with some restaurants and other shops and there is a parking lot. Just because a store is the only one nearby for tourists, it does not excuse high prices or rude behavior. Although they may be friendly to many people, when I questioned them on the price of an item that was on sale, of which they were charging me full price, they were quite rude. The cashier refused to walk 10 feet to double check, and told me that I'd have to get in the back of the line once I checked. When I showed them the correct price, after waiting a while in line again, I did not get an apology or anything. They just discussed it among themselves and finished charging me. I am posting a copy of our receipt shopping elsewhere (if I can figure out how to), instead of back here that night. $51.65. That's what poor customer service results in. read more

I made the mistake of reading Yelp reviews before coming that made me think this was a good place to get groceries. Big mistake! Everything on the grocery side is overpriced, and there is a selection about as big as your local 7-11. For example, a half gallon carton of POG here was a little over $6. At Long's Drug's it was only $4. About the same at Safeway. At Foodland (though further away) was only $1.50. Just a little perspective. If you're looking for groceries upon arriving to feed a family, your best bet is Costco and Safeway in Lihue or Foodland in Kapaa. For things you can't find there, go to Big Save or the one near it in Old Koloa Town, both a short drive away. Do come here for the souvenirs. They are basically the ABC Store of the south -- bigger than the actual ABC Store in Lihue and in a better location than the ABC Store in Kapaa. Great selection of gifts and souvenirs! read more

This is my favorite store. I found the UPF+50 long sleeve shirt I was looking for, plus a UPF+50 long sleeve jacket with thumb holes with the part that goes over the top of your hand that protects you from the sun. Plus it zips up. Also found one for Mark. Found lots of other goodies to take back home to my mom and grand daughter Sage. I really enjoyed the young ladies that were working here, very helpful & friendly as well. I did not want to leave the store because the music was awesome. 80's music took me back to my late teenage years. Made me think of my boyfriend at that time, Mike. While we were staying at the Sheraton at Poipu Beach, Whaler's General Store was our go-to place for all of our snaking and miscellaneous needs... They have quite the selection of items that you will eventually need while vacationing from sun screen, bottled water and snacks to magnets, post cards and water shoes. Our group was at Whalers at least once a day stocking up on necessities before heading out on our adventures. Reasonable prices. Check. Friendly service. Check. Convenient. Check. One minor hint...if you use a debit/credit card, you are holding up the line! They only have one machine to run cards and it is separate from the register, so they step away to run your card and it takes more moments than normal. Headed back to the airport and realized I needed gum. So we stopped here at the general store. And waited 15 minutes to check out, there were four people in line, and six employees with only one working the register. The one working the register had to walk away and ask the manager which pack of cigarettes though trying to buy regular apparently she couldn't read. The manager told her what color to pick. Before other employees or meandering around the store, some restocked and some marking down items for sale. I almost put the gun down and walked out but then I knew I would pay twice as much at the airport. So I waited in line and watched what was non-customer service. I was shocked and amazed. I figured the general store would be full of expensive crap to take home as gifts and overpriced sundries. Instead it was full of very reasonably priced crap to take home and very nicely priced sundries. We managed to pick up dumb personalized license plates, mugs, ash trays, and such for friends and it didn't break the bank. The sunblock was cheaper than on the mainland. I always need to stop in at a Whalers or ABC store on my last day to pick up some treats for the folks back home. Among the usual items like shell leis, macadamia nut everything, coffee, sauces and spices, Whalers had a big supply of tropical scene ted soaps, lotions, conditioners, shampoos made from natural ingredients. I wish I had seen this earlier in the week because I was in dire need of lotion since I had forgotten mine, and ended up buying some generic stuff at Big Save. Next time I'm heading in there to get my fix! I ended up buying several boxes of macadamia nut candy (yeah, I know...but people like it) and a pretty necklace with a Tahitian black pearl fro me.
