So this little hidden gem on Kauai is the cookie factory. When you go in the door you are greeted by some very nice and accommodating women who let you have taste tests of the various flavors. Then you go in the back and pick out what you want. The prices are the best on the island dollars cheaper per box than in any grocery or other shop. Plus you already know how any flavor tastes. You might even get lucky and have them be packaging the flavor you most want fresh that day. read more

We happened to be shopping in the nearby area and we were super excited to have stumbled on this spot! Who doesn't love cookies! It's a little run down looking but still really cool to visit. They sell baked goods like manju and brownies and of course they have a variety of different cookies for sale. Service was a little lackluster, we didn't get a pleasant hello or anything and no one offered any samples. It wasn't until we bought our stuff and were leaving did we see an area where you can try their cookies. Wish I had seen that at the beginning. This is where the magic happens, but you only get a glimpse of the old school store. From the outside, you're not sure if it's open. Once inside, you're greeted with lots of outgoing packages. Step even more inside, that's when you'll see the gift shop filled with Kauai Kookie items that I've never seen before. Never seen as in, I'm not sure if these are one offs or they just never went into full production. You'll find treats, breads, and clothing that you can buy as souvenirs. You'll find these items in small quantities as this shop cannot house that many items. No, there were no samples to be seen anywhere when we were here. We drove by a Kauai Kookie sign while making the drive out to Waimea Canyon, and made a note to stop in on our way back. Somehow we accidentally ended up at their warehouse location instead of the cafe - heads up that this is basically their factory with a small shop area of packaged souvenir cookies. The location had conflicting signs that said they were both open and closed, but I headed in anyway. The shop area is a little dusty and disorganized, and without having prior knowledge of the company, I was surprised to see everything professionally packaged like grocery store cookies rather than the bakery display I had been expecting. They have several gift baskets here with a variety of flavors. We ended up getting several of their smaller "sample" size bags to try all the flavors. The shortbread cookies come with chocolate chips, macadamia nuts, coffee, and other flavors. I would like to think that these cookies were super fresh since we were physically at the factory, but I'm curious how long the stock may have been sitting on shelves in this low-traffic shop - texture of cookies was not the greatest, more dry and crumbly than I would have expected. Good and cheap, but not as good as Honolulu Cookie Company, which is only on Oahu and Maui. I don't mind regular fats, but each little Kauai cookie has 1g of TRANS FAT. This is really, REALLY bad stuff on your body. It can take YEARS for these fats to leave your body. The American Heart Association says not to eat more than 2g a day, but since you regularly get a tiny bit of trans fats that occur naturally in meat products, you should just avoid processed trans fats altogether. This place didn't look like much on the outside, but once we were inside the little shop, it grew on me. The lady working there didn't hesitate in giving us free samples. I'm pretty sure we tried almost every type of sugary morsel they had that day. This is a great stop to grab your edible souvenirs. I bought a round container full of individually wrapped Kona Coffee Macademia Nut cookies (sorry, kookies) that was perfect for bringing back to the office. There are so many varieties it's hard not to go crazy (I was kept in check only by the fact that I knew I had limited carry-on room). Try the Chinese Tea cookie (I'm sorry, I can't keep saying kookie). It's the only soft one I found, and it went really well with coffee. Don't worry about your little bags getting crunched either - the nice lady will put them in a box for you. It's not an hours long excursion, but it's worth a stop if you in the area. I've always loved Kauai Kookies! They may not be soft and chewy but it was a joy to eat them with hot chocolate for breakfast on Kauai. I remember as kid browsing the grocery aisle and picking out all the flavors. I must have grabbed five different flavors and place them into the shopping cart, but my parents said "only one". So I kept the chocolate chips and finished the whole box before we got home. I kept bugging my mom and auntie to go back to the store, but they said no. So I kept the box and took it home to California as a souvenir. Years later when we visited Hawaii, I had my own cash and was ready to splurge on my own boxes. The first thing I grabbed at the grocery store - KAUAI KOOKIES!!! I bought all the flavors! And since then i've made it a point to always stock up before I went home. I would buy enough to eat on vacation and take home. Tips: Don't buy them from the ABC stores. You can save about $2.00 per box if you buy them from the local grocery store or Longs. Kauai Kookie can be found back on the mainland, but they only sell 8 types on the mainland. If you stop by here you can sample all of the flavors that they only sell in Hawaii. In total they have approximately 35 different cookie flavors. I was amazed! They have cookies with furikake, taro, passion fruit, coffee and so on. My personal favorite was the butter passion fruit mini cookie. Excellent flavor and the passion fruit is not overpowering. Come here if you're in the area. The factory outlet is a great place to pick up gifts! It's a nondescript building with a giant parking lot. It's definitely a 'factory' in that it basically looks like a shipping warehouse, with only a very small storefront. But you're not in here to sightsee -- you're here to cram your mouth with cookies (actually, KOOKIES). The staff are friendly and happy to give you all the samples you want, and then some. I like that there's the regular assortment of flavors, and also a nut-free line of flavors if (horror of horrors) you're allergic to macadamia nuts. The banzai flavor is interesting in a good way -- it's got seaweed in it, and tastes basically like a furikake cookie. Good balance against all the sweetness and richness of the cookie. You can buy single packages of 2 cookies, or a giant assortment bag. Hard to tell till you actually turn the corner and face the thing that it's a little storefront! Otherwise it looks just like a loading dock. Well, it is a storefront stuffed into what looks like a loading dock, run by a nice elderly lady who offers samples by the truckload. The prices aren't the same as at the KMart in Lihue but you cant beat the charm. I don't really know if there is something you cat get anywhere else but there were these homey look clear plastic jars covered with a colorful cloth on top and of course cookies inside. We were greeted by the nice lady running the shop and a warm espresso mocha mac cookie straight out of the toaster oven. Darn good sample, especially b/c it was warm! It wooed me, I bought a package. The cookies come in all flavors and packaging and the lady had samples of all of them. The cookies came in small boxes, large bags, large bags of individually wrapped assorted cookies, and boxes of individually wrapped assorted cookies. In the middle of the wall was the Hawaiian Hula papaya seed dressing my family hunts down at every store during a Hawaiian visit. It sells for $1.79 here, cheaper than Longs, Wal-Mart or the grocery stores! Deal! I asked the lady if Kauai Kookie makes the dressing too and they did! Yay! I found the source! We walked out of the store w/several bags of individually wrapped cookies, a ton of dressing packets and a package of the espresso mocha mac cookies. The cookies flew home in my backpack. I love the smell of this place and there are hot samples of goodies. My love of these cookies is such that I rock a SnapBack hat. There are so many goodies and packages that fit nicely in carry on luggage. Kauai Kookie is sold at most convenience shops and touristy places in Kauai, but come directly here to the factory store to get the best prices and to be able to sample any one of the various flavors. Kauai Cookies are not like your typical chewy chocolate chip. They have more of a light crisp buttery flavory, and are not soft, but more flaky in texture. They are quite yummy though when toasted lightly, and are light enough so you can buy a few boxes to take home. They also sell individually wrapped cookies as well as large sampler packs. The store itself is small but stocks all their different flavors including special flavors not found elsewhere. They also sell Hawaiian sweet bread, manju (sold out when we got there, darn), and various pastries. They said they are also the makers of the famous papaya seed dressing that comes either premixed in bottles, or dried in packages and you add water and oil at home. I ended up buying a bunch of the cookies in different flavors, as well as a few packages of the dressing. It's my new favorite dressing! My tip, don't get the lo-cal version as it tastes kinda gummy. You dont' put oil in it, just vinegar and water, blech. The regular version is great!
