Only 3 miles from us and one of the five the article claims is a must try in the Houston area. OMG Walking in the door the smell told me i was in the right place. I can't say enough WONDERFUL things about this shop! Quality of food is high! Everything tastes fresh! Which is great when we're talking about donuts and Kolaches, because most places don't deliver that! The donuts just melt in your mouth they are so good! I've been a couple times a week since they have opened, I want to make sure I get to try a variety of their items! :) And so far, everything has been incredible! We headed out towards this side of town for a doggie play date with some friends. After a late lunch of delicious burgers, we were ready for some dessert. Although I had brought Berry Chantilly cake from Whole Foods (my absolute favorite!) I was convinced to ditch my favorite cake in the whole wide world for some ice cream donuts. She promised me that it was going to blow my mind, and she was not lying! I came specifically for one thing and that was the ice cream donuts. One scoop of ice cream, a topping of your choice flanked on both sides by a crispy fluffy donut. Perfection. I am extremely picky about donuts. It can't be too dense, it has to be crispy and it shouldn't taste like I ate a handful of sugar. Koala does them just right. It was late afternoon when we arrived so I did not get a chance to have any kolaches. As a matter of fact they didn't have any left, that's how you know that they were good. This place is off 290. I usually take I-10 to Austin but I'm thinking for my next roadtrip I will have to come down 290 and maybe make a pit stop to this awesome place. read more

We went back the next day and bought five. I regret not buying fifty! The kolaches are delicious, no doubt about that, but the crowning jewel for my sweet tooth is the original cinnamon roll. I really wanted to give this place a higher rating but there is room for improvement here. First of all the place is very charming and the owner is extremely friendly. The Kolaches are good but could be a bit better. I tried the brisket, spicy Boudin and the sausage cheese. The dough for each is really remarkable, soft and melt in your mouth type. It is the filling that is disappointing. The brisket was drowning in bbq sauce and took away from a good smoke house brisket taste. I would suggest a filling something like the breakfast tacos at Rudy's - brisket cheese and egg. The boudin was ok, a bit too spicy for me though. It was the sausage cheese Kolache that disappointed. A very small sausage for the dough. It needs to be Texas sized link not something slightly larger than a cocktail wiener. I hope she takes the advice and pumps it up a bit. read more

I have been going to Koala Kolache since they were in their old location. I live in Pasadena and made the trek out to the Northwest side of town about every other weekend just to get some of these treats. The owner is such a nice person, and the staff is always extremely nice. The food is out of this world. I haven't tried all of the kolaches that they have yet, but everything that I have tried was phenomenal. When I was going to the old location the owner was trying to perfect her fruit filling for her traditional fruit kolaches. I haven't had a chance to try them since she has been serving them. But my coworkers have and they said they were great. Everything is made from scratch. There isn't a lot of seating but I'm sure most people aren't there to sit and have breakfast with others. My favorite thing to order are their koala cakes. It is a donut without the hole, and they cut it in half and stuff it with your choice of ice cream and a topping. Usually I get the cinnamon sugar donut, with cookies and cream or mocha ice cream, and cinnamon toast crunch. It is absolutely amazing! All the different textures and the warm/cold between the donut/ice cream is great. There are about 8 or so different types of ice cream to choose from and plenty of toppings to get as well. I would definitely recommend getting one. It will melt quick though so be sure to eat it on the spot. If you are in the area, you should check them out. They are open late during the week and still have plenty of things to choose from in the late afternoon. You won't regret it. read more
