You can tell that the hosts put in a lot of thought to the renovation they've recently completed- it's beautiful inside and out, very clean and extremely comfortable beds! As far as hosts go, you won't find a better one than Anna Ruth- she was SO responsive and helpful with recommendations on things to do in nearby towns and beaches. We also utilized the concierge service for grocery purposes, making our check in/settling in even easier. I couldn't recommend this property more and we can't wait to return for our next vacation!

Price was good for the accommodation in expensive Hawaii and area has several interesting historical sights,vistas and heiaus nearby.Hawi and Kapaau are wonderful laid back little authentic Hawaiian towns that time seems to have forgotten. The follow-up reply from the host was, "We get really used to them because they are everywhere in our tropical environment much better than spiders!" I am no stranger to the Big Island, this is my 5th time here this year. I am here at least twice a year. My mom is from Hilo and her entire family is here. This is the only rental or hotel I have stayed at on the Island that has had roaches inside the unit. The property was beautiful, very nicely appointed and clean, except for the roaches. When we started using the kitchen there were roaches. I moved the trash can from under the sink and spotted the first one. We sprayed it and other roaches scattered. The spray only slowed them enough to get them with a newspaper. I called and emailed the host. She said someone would bring traps and have the service come. The traps were delivered and placed under the sink. She said the service would be by later, but no one came. The next day, my sister had to kill a roach in her room, my son killed a roach in his sister's bed and the downstairs shower. My daughter opened the dishwasher and saw at least 10 roaches scatter. Before we left we made a video and sent to the host. I really felt as if I was being blown off as if I was just a complainer and my concerns about the roaches were unwarranted. Not what I expected from a "Luxury Property".

Ryan and Jasmine are the perfect hosts and they both radiate the love they have for the land, and everyone who joins them at the Sanctuary can feel it. When you put your foot on the land you can feel the love they have for the land and can see everything it is giving back. The land vibrates at a frequency that flows over you and clams your nervous system. Within minutes of being there you feel the calmness and serenity of the land and find yourself taking a deep breath exhaling and feel your body relaxing. Walking the land and seeing what Ryan is doing with his planting practices makes you understand what is happening there. It rained most nights when we were there and the gentle pattering of the rain on the roof is a wonderful way to fall asleep. If you're lucky enough to be there during rainy season you will understand why they call it a rain forest. There are so many fruit trees on the property there is always something fresh to pick or new fruit to try. There is a banana plant before the gate to the parking area where you can grab a few bananas before you take off for a day of adventures around the island. If you stay on the big island, staying a few nights at Hamakua Sanctuary will be the highlight of your trip, but I suggest a few weeks to really get to know the land and people who visit the sanctuary. We met so many wonderful people in the outdoor kitchen every morning at breakfast with baskets of fresh fruit and veggies picked and ready for you to cut up and sample. Some mornings we would all eat together and talk about our adventures the prior day. Connecting with people from all over the country and world. I know someone will roll their eyes and think this is too woo woo for me, but I guarantee within 10 minutes of stepping onto the land you'll be thinking, damn she was right!

The people that I met during my stay offered such special communion and welcomed me like family. We laughed, we danced, we spoke of the deep and the lighthearted. My absolute favorite part of my stay was connecting with Ryan, his friends, the other guests, and the folks who have come to work on the 'aina and be part of Ryan's program. The space itself goes above and beyond. The house is beautiful, well-kept, well-appointed, extremely clean, peaceful and serene, with character for days. The sheets and bedding are luxurious. Stunning, sun-soaked kitchen. Cute bathroom with a full tub! Gorgeous, big screened-in lanai (porch) for yoga, meditation, reading, or what have you. Separate structure just below the main house offers a peaceful little meditation studio. I have never seen anything like it. It was a joy to putter around the property and sit with all the wonderful beings that live there - from humans to dog and cat friends, duckies, and birds. The road on which this property is situated is quiet and pastoral with beautiful vistas, flowers, trees and more along the way. I highly recommend taking a leisurely stroll during your stay. Mana Loli was exactly what I needed, and if you feel drawn to it, it will be exactly what you need, too.

A short walk to the ocean where locals go to whale watch, and a great hike to the historic Heiaus nearby. Close to Hawi Town and all its trendy and quirky shops and places to eat. A real winner if you'd like to get to know The Big Island and historic North Kohala.

Seemed like the place hadn't had a good cleaning in a long, long time. I would guess the affable hostess simply has let the place go. Having said that, the whales are right outside your door, the decor is charming, the location excellent, and the "guard dogs" wouldn't harm a flea. This is the kind of place that would be just fine for a night or two as you meander by train through Hungary (What?!?! You didn't know there were grass shacks with Humpback whales right outside your door in Hungary?!?!). But the place is a little run down, buggy and Gecko-y if you're spending a week. I have seen many ocean sunrises and in my lifetime but this view was breathtaking! I had to run back to get my wife to come in just to see the sunset. The Aloha spirit seems to be in the hearts of all the staff! The Live entertainment on weekends is special, and all you can eat Buffet once a month is worth waiting for! There is so much to do right in the resort from snorkeling and swimming where sea turtles hang out, to enjoying the many pools and spas.....and it is perfectly located to enjoy sunsets, and day trips across the island! Kona is very close and if you love coffee it is a short trip to the many Kona coffee farms! The rooms are spacious, spotless and comfortable ! The upstairs bed seemed to be a large double. Not even Queen size. :( Dad ended up sleeping on the foldout couch because Mom couldn't stand his snoring. He said it was a very comfortable fold out couch. However, the walls are thin & we could hear him snoring form our upstairs bedroom. Loved the huge walk in closet upstairs.
