Nice layout! I didn't dine in on this visit but looking forward to in coming visits. There is a flight of steps to climb before entering the to-go area so persons need ADA accommodations may find it difficult to access. The parking was also not ideal for customers in the tiny lot space allocated in front of the restaurant. The bar area was very clean and felt modern offering a decent street view down Eads. I did not view the downstairs main dining area unfortunately. The service was swift and efficient. The bartender/server was able to receive my order and deliver it to the chef for preparation. As suggested the food was ready in ten minutes. I ordered the butter chicken and lamb tikka marsala with a side of roti and a side of garlic naan. On the receipt the butter chicken was labeled as tikka but it was butter chicken. The roti was not bad though I preferred the naan more. The garlic naan lived up to its name and was packed with minced garlic mainly toward the center or the bread. It was quite tasty and paired really well with the lamb tikka marsala. The butter chicken was good offering tender marinated chicken breast covered in the smooth and creamy sauce. The lamb was similarly prepared offering a deeper robust flavor and higher spice level. Granted I wasn't asked spice level for either dish. Considering both dishes were ticketed as a tikka I inferred the difference between butter chicken and chicken tikka could be the added spice. Either way both dishes were very good and well portioned giving the clear advantage to the lamb. I had no idea if it would be tikka masala or a different kind of chicken dish. (I'm very happy it was tikka masala.) For appetizer we had the #8 Mixed Veggies samosa it was a bit spicy and dry for me. I give it a 3.8/5. For dinner we ordered the #47 Lamb Vandalu. It was spicy but delicious sauce with right amount of spices and give it a 4/5. We also ordered the #50 Chicken tikka masala with one order of #22 Garlic Naan bread and both were OUTSTANDING and give it 5/5!! Definitely coming back for these two. Food so good I had to come twice! I'm visiting from California and I had to stop by at my parent's go-to Indian food spot whenever they visit Virginia. Megha was our server both times and she was so lovely. She took excellent care of us and really enjoys her job! The dining room is in a basement, the tablecloths are plastic, the floor is tiled. It's not a fancy place. But the food is worth it. I got the muttar paneer which was the perfect level of spice, it had lots of flavor and was sooo creamy. I got an order of naan with it and it was freshly made. My companions got the tikka masala and lamb curry and they both raved about them. The service was very slow - it took almost 40 minutes to get our meal. The location is so nondescript that it would have been so easy to drive right by it if my roommate hadn't already been there before. This Indian restaurant is easy to review. However, the object of my comments (that is, the owners) may not find it easy to read. THE FOOD The food at Kohinoor Dhaba was good. Probably as good as most Indian food I have had before. The samosas were nicely crispy on the outside and the filling was luxurious and exotic. Plus we received them within minutes of ordering them. Our main dishes - chicken tikka masala and palak paneer - were good. Not great. But solid and good. Whoever cooked the rice did an outstanding job. The naan also was good. This restaurant was recommended to us by some folks directly from India. They said it was the most authentic Indian food they had eaten in the DC area. That might be true, I don't know because I'm not Indian. But now, after our dinner there, I notice that they didn't use words like "best" or "great." Maybe it's just coincidence, who knows. THE DINING ROOM This might be the worst dining room I have ever eaten in anywhere. It was in the basement and lit like a surgical suite in a hospital. The floor was dirty. The fabric roses were dusty and caked with previous diners' food. There were numerous water stains on the ceiling and walls. And our table was so close to the bathroom that we could smell the toilet bowl cookie throughout our entire meal. Not appetizing at all. In fact, we would have left the place if we didn't have to climb the stairs and walk right past the staff to get out of there. When I say the dining room was terrible, I don't think that adequately describes it but it's as close as I can get. If this restaurant does not CHANGE ITS DINING ROOM, it will never last long.
