This place is great -- all the food is fantastic, and the waiters were very helpful in recommendations. Never having been here, I hosted a surprise birthday party for a co-worker here (for 10 people) and they were very accommodating with last minute changes to time and guest numbers. The margaritas were huge, and the waiter got them all right (which I think was confusing since it was a variety of "frozen, no salt; on the rocks, salt; on the rocks, no salt" etc.) and to the right people. As a visitor to McAllen, I was first introduced to Koko's as an ordered in lunch for work. I told the person ordering to get me the best thing on the menu and I was given the fajitas tacos and they were absolutely amazing. I went back for a second time the next week with some friends and had the chance to look over the menu on my own and ordered something different (wish I could remember​ the name!) and it was even better than my first meal. We LOVE the bar area. It's dark, it's intimate, the bartenders are great! However, there's an equivalent of a seagull from "the little mermaid" trying to serenade the crowd at a deafening 150 decibels. Seriously, do you need an amplifier in a 20'by15' room? Any time we have walked in through the door and we heard this guy we turned around and left. It is ridiculous how loud and obnoxious he is. So we do lunch there only. This place was the first place my parents took me to after getting off the plane when I asked for some good Mexican food close to home. I was immediately greeted by some yummy chips and salsa, and a good selection of drinks and food before my eyes. The waitstaff was attentive and courteous, and the decor inside was friendly and upbeat. The menu had a great selection on it, and I ordered enchiladas, though I wish I had ordered some tacos or something more generic. They definitely made that tomatillo sauce in house - it was a little too bitter for my tastes, but still a good dish. Prior to eating here, the idea of refried beans was an afterthought, a side-dish. Something we don't recall when sharing our food experiences with friends and family. That has changed now. Nice, friendly restaurant with generous portions of good food. The decor is typical valley Mexican; bright and festive. The restaurant is an open floor plan so it is a bit noisy. There are separate rooms you can get with reservations. The drinks were nothing special, they have the typical Aguas frescos and the margarita that we had was fine. We ordered one botana and a sombrero plata. They were cooked in a decent amount of time and were more than ample for our party of three. The steak was juicy and had good flavor. The Service was friendly and helpful. I would go back again to this restaurant with good food and happy atmosphere. read more

Food is great. Shrimp cocktail is Huge. I was surprised to find wheat crackers. Looked on website for hours of operation. Said they were open till 11:00pm. Got there at 8:30 pm. We were told the kitchen closed at 9:00 pm. So we quickly ordered and quickly got our food. Always good food I just wish we had more time. read more

Every time I go back to the Valley I have to eat mexican food...not tex-mex which is all over Houston, but straight up mexican food. My friend Ginna decided to take me here on day to try it out when it had first opened. It is fantastically great. Pretty much as close to mom's homemade as any restaurant is gonna get. Best Mexican restaurant ever. That about sums it up. I don't even like Mexican food and yet I'm drawn to this restaurant everytime I'm in town. The food is phenomenal. The service is fast. The salsa is homemade. Plus, on Sundays they have live mariachi bands (including the awesome all female band that is incredibly talented). It has a great location and has recently expanded--and yet it is still full. I'm so impressed by this restaurant that we actually ate here twice this last weekend. Went for lunch a couple days ago. It's a bit over priced and the food is not that great. Service was good. We don't wait long for a table.. I ordered the burrito dinner.. Not what I expected at all! It was pretty much flour tortillas on top of each other w beans and very fatty meat! The meat was not goat all!! It was called carne guisada.. It came w rice , beans and a salad.. My his and ordered the kpkos special and was not impressed.. Was very disappointed... Our waiter asked us about our food and I complained that the meat was very fatty and the burrito was not good.. All he said was I'll let the chef know.. I know of other restaurants would've change my dish or comp plate since I wasn't satisfied not the case here. read more

I travel down to McAllen for at least one week of the month to work with my two brothers. Kokos has great food, queso dip, Reynosa tacos and even shrimp enchiladas. I asked for fish tacos (grilled) and even though it was not on the menu, they cooked them for me and they were excellent. I try to eat here once during the week when I come down. read more

The botanas are so delicious here, don't waste your time going anywhere else. I had my graduation dinner here and invited 50+ people and it was the easiest dinner party. They were so attentive to all my guests despite it being such a large party. Their cucumber jalapeño margarita is so, so, SO delicious, I think they've even gotten an award for it. read more

Service is good I thought. The food was just blah and way overpriced for mexican food. I'd say this place and Costa Mesa are pretty similar alot of bucks for none of the bang. Ordered beef enchiladas which tasted like cold corn tortillas stuffed with lukewarm beef doused in a wolf chili type sauce and a sprinkle of yellow stuff I assume they consider cheese. Couldn't bring myself to pay 17 bucks for fajitas. Could get a pariallada at Los compadres for 7 bucks and twice the taste. I'm a pretty avid mexican food buff but in my honest opinion this place just sucks. The service is top notch no doubt. Nice ambiance but no flavor food wise. I'd recommend Jc's or Los compadres in edinburg more so. Just a humble opinion save the bucks and try another mexican place. read more
