Had the breakfast buffet. Worth noting that you can order an omelette or pancakes from the kitchen. I got a ham/veggie omelette that was decent. The actual buffet is quite sad though. Coffee wasn't good, none of the food was fresh. Such a nice hotel in many ways, was hoping for better. It was much better 5 years ago when I stayed here. Was staying at a nearby hotel and came here for a weekday dinner. The place was pretty empty so I was seated immediately. ATMOSPHERE: There are seats inside the hotel lobby as well as a dedicated area for the restaurant. Plenty of free parking in the adjacent garage. I thought the place felt historic and cozy, and I liked that it was not crowded or packed. FOOD: I got the honey sriracha "jumbo" wings. They were good, crispy and flavored nicely. They were not "jumbo" at all, they were just normal wings. I did like that they came with a bunch of fries, and you can ask for ranch on the side. I also ordered a bartender's choice cocktail - they currently do not have a cocktail menu. The drink was pretty standard. SERVICE: Really kind. The bartender gave me a ton of local recommendations for restaurants and places to see and was always available for requests. PRICE/VALUE: The place was a bit overpriced for me. The wings were $11 for 6 wings, and the drink was $11. There are other places in the area with better prices for the portions given. Overall, this isn't a "must-try" if in the area, but definitely still a solid option for dinner in a nice, historic-feeling setting. read more

I have breakfast at this restaurant. The service is outstanding. They offer a buffet but I always choose the huevos ranchero.

I didn't get to try the food but the drinks were amazing. Coronado the bartender is so nice and inviting. I could talk to him for hours! The special handcrafted cocktails he made were the best I've ever tasted. I can't wait to come back to get more cocktails & try the food. read more

An Oasis!!! A Quiet Place to Dine with Friends and Family. This is an update. This year it was even better. The basics of my first review remain. One additional star was added for superb service. Richard, Noemi, Martha and Marivel were perfect hosts. The menu has expanded to include traditional Mexican dishes. The Spanish Room is the Restaurant at the Renaissance Hotel. It's a small restaurant with a very accommodating staff. If you want to dine in lea sure with friends, this is the place to go. The best way to describe it: it's as a dining room of your home. It is a place to sit with friends. There is a chef that can make accommodations to your meal. We had "picky" eaters. The pasta had to be pure, just pasta. They can do that. The food is much better than one would expect from a corporate chain. The chicken panini has a breast of chicken that was double sliced. So often there is one thick slab of chicken that is hard to bite. The one we order was good. Other items were a Diablo Shrimp salad. All the food was good. Breakfast was buffet style. Eggs (2 styles), bacon, potatoes, beans, muffins, bagels, fruits, oatmeal, pastries, etc. The bacon was especially good. Spend a weekend at the Renaissance and the restaurant staff become very familiar with your habits. Thanks to Noemi on the breakfast shift and to Marivel on the dinner shift for being so accommodating. They transitioned to our needs seamlessly. I was up early while the breakfast buffet was being laid out. Richard, the manager, was nice enough to bring coffee to the bar while I waited for the buffet to be ready. Located in a hotel lobby. Not exactly cheap as you might imagine.. Tried the steak sandwich, fries, and side salad. The portion was ok, not exactly big... not small. The sandwich were pretty good, with nice slices of steak and mushrooms. The side salad was not worth the six bucks. If I was held hostage by thunderstorms at this hotel again; I would eat here, otherwise I would probably venture out. read more

As newbies in McAllen, my husband and I were eager to try the Spanish room for breakfast as a break from eating breakfast tacos all the time. The food was good-he had steak/eggs/potatoes and I had the eggs Benedict with fruit. My eggs could have had a bit more Hollandaise, but the fruit cup was perfect with watermelon and pineapple. My husband adored his steak. The service on the other hand was terrible. After the waiter delivered my cup of coffee without cream, he made himself scarce and it took about 10 minutes for me to flag down the hostess, so by the time I actually got my cream my coffee was getting cold. Then my husband's plate was brought out with the eggs scrambled instead of over easy. Instead of just bringing out more eggs, the waiter took the whole plate away and returned it with the correct eggs about 10 min later. In the meantime however , everything else had gotten cold and the toast was now hard. The waiter added some bacon to the plate, and when we asked about it, he said it was probably meant for someone else. The final insult was that the credit card machine was down, and we had no cash. It turned out it had been down for a few hours, and this info could have been given to us when we first sat down. Instead, we had to take cash out of their ATM which cost us $5 in fees, $3 from the ATM and $2 from Chase. We won't be going back. read more

Pathetic customer service. When your beer glass smells like a mildewed bar towel, it makes you wonder why you aren't walking out immediately. Maybe this is normal? It is very humid in McAllen. Then, your salad arrives with your entree and soup. I would have hurried through my salad to make room for my dinner companions, but they hadn't been served any food yet. The food was good, even though my "rare" burger was medium at best (no pink at all). When the separate checks arrived it was no surprise that my one beer was on my coworker's check and his two beers were on mine. After all, she did deliver them incorrectly. The icing on the cake was her long, drawn out, droning "Oh, sorry...." followed by the awkward silence while she waited for us (the customers) to sort out the bill. read more

Alright, so yesterday my friend and I went to The Spanish Room to have lunch, thinking it was going to be great food. Once we got there, we ordered a few drinks, which were okay and then ordered an appetizer. We ordered the salmon to start and it wasn't good at all, the texture made it seem like it was a coupe days old. Then we ordered our main course which was chicken and a steak sandwich. They severed my friend a spoiled chicken that reeked very bad and the stake sandwich was over dry with no flavor. Overall, we had a bad experience there and will not be going back ever.
