I met an associate at Saltgrass Steakhouse in McAllen for dinner. I had only been to Saltgrass one other time in Houston. I enjoyed my meal there and had high expectations for this time. The building is decorated nicely with a western theme. There are some taxidermied animals (I noticed the longhorn, and a bobcat), so if you're squeamish about that or vegan I recommend you go find a tofu house. The outside is also nicely done, complete with patio dining tables- but it's so hot this time of year that was not an option for us. Background mysic stayed in the background, adding ambience without stopping conversation. We had no wait for a table, and our server did a great job taking our order. He was friendly, engaging, and efficient. He brought our drinks and one of their loaves of warm bread and butter. The bread is delicious, but I only had one piece to save room for the main course. I ordered the 12 oz. ribeye, a baked potato and a salad. My associate had the Texas T-bone, a salad and some asparagus spears. Both our steaks were cooked as ordered and we both enjoyed them immensely. Mine was so good it did not need steak sauce. I did ask for some extra butter for my potato, and it was promptly brought to the table. The salad was very good, as was the potato (I can get those elsewhere, and for less), but the star of the show was the steak. While their desserts sounded delectable, after my meal I couldn't eat another bite. Prices are on the high side, but this is not fast food, and the service and ambience were excellent. We walk in and immediately get hit with a disgusting dirty ash tag smell. Let the hostess know and she's unconcerned. Tried to seat us in an area where it still smells. My family loves to eat at Saltgrass so whenever they come to the Valley, this is one of their favorite locations. The staff here is extremely professional with consistent service and great attitudes. The main thing regarding the ambiance is that there has been this musty/cleaning product smell that's particularly strong near the kitchen/restroom part of the restaurant that can ruin your appetite. However, if you sit on the right-sided portion of the restaurant around the bar area, then there's no odor. Fortunately, my menus were clean and I didn't experience any sanitation problems with the booths/tables. The food portions are huge so be sure to come hungry! I usually get the Pat's Ribeye 16oz with roasted brussel sprouts. The ribeye is juicy and has a nice pepper flavor, which pairs well with the roasted brussel sprouts. The steaks all include a choice of soup or salad, but I typically go with the garden salad since the weather in the Valley has been too hot for a warm soup. Overall, you can't go wrong with the food at this Saltgrass because it's been consistent and flavorful each time I have visited. As long as they can fix the odd odor near the left side of the dining room, that would greatly enhance the guest experience. read more

Overall it was good. I would like to give it a shot but our first experience was kinda odd. I met a bunch of friends here and we all had the expectation of having a nice steak dinner with a few drinks and have a great time. I met my friend there early before the ladies showed up and we had a drink at the bar. It was a nice experience. They have a great ambiance, nice bar and I felt like I was going to have a great time. Eventually our friends showed up and we all got a seat. I think there were about 7 of us. We sat in a side room and again, it was a cool vibe. Our server showed up and asked for drinks and my guy friend and I literally ordered the exact same thing we ordered at the bar. The ladies ordered their drinks and the server was off to the races. He comes back and stated that they didn't have our drinks. My friend and I looked at each other and were WTF?! lol. We kindly reminded the server that we had just ordered these items at the bar. He apologized and went back to the bar. No worries, honest mistake. He came back and insisted that the bourbon wasn't available but brought the beers. Hey, no worries, maybe we drank the last of it. These things happen. I looked at their drink menu which is quite nice BTW. So i picked out a different bourbon and went from there. He comes back and says he doesn't have that either. Now we're all joking about it at the table. I kindly ask him what do they have? We get shuffled to another server and we eventually get it all sorted out and continue on with our dining experience. No big deal. On to our actual orders. Our party LOVED their food. I was a little homesick and I had just been to Vegas, then immediately to TX. I was away from home for about a week. I wanted some comfort food all of a sudden (maybe the bourbon speaking to me) so I ordered my steak with rice. I'm half asian and eat rice A LOT. The steak was quite nice, I ordered the New York and the rice was Pilaf. Not bad but for some reason a steak with white rice with a side of sriracha was really what I was wanting. In closing the experience was a little odd, the food was good, the ambiance good too but the service was just OK. The saving grace was that my party had a great experience so that is the most important thing. When in the area I'll try it again. This place has a lot of potential. read more

This is our go to place for steak in the RGV. Last night was somewhat disappointing. My wife's food was very good. Mine in the other hand was not so good. I ordered my steak rare. At best it was medium. The shrimp were good but then the Parmesan truffle fries were inedible. There was enough salt on them for the whole restaurant. The carrot cake is fantastic. We have ordered just carrot cake as a pick up order. Service was ok. But definitely not the best we have experienced at Salt Grass. We will go back but warily. read more

So far so good! I am loving the appetizer that the server recommended me! He offered me the chips, queso, and brisket? It was absolutely delicious and had a huge fried jalapeño that we Texans love. The best queso I've had hands down. It has an obey, gooey texture that leaves me coming back for more. I enjoyed their chicken soup along with their Texas-sized rolls. I haven't even had my dinner yet and I am pleased. I dropped a star at the end of my dinner because my server was not attentive of me. I waited a while for refill. There was no check back to see if I enjoyed my meal. He has four other tables so I am understanding. I am waiting very patiently for my check but that receipt should have been at my table a while ago. I also had to ask to get my complimentary bread. It's not the end of the world, however. Please take my review as a constructive critique! I will still be back because the food was oh so delicious! I only had enough room for half of my ribeye steak that the server recommended. I ordered it medium well and it has dome great grill marks. 10/10 would recommend for the food. I was not unhappy about the service either. My only complaint is that I had to wait a while for my receipt, refills, bread, and my box to go but I'm willing to wait for good service. I'll be back when that steak craving hits. Wow, I may have reviewed too soon. This is my first time going from 5 stars to 3 stars. Second time editing. I asked for bread and the server said "I'll get it for you after I cash you out." Only positive from todays visit food was great as always but when the bill came it had drinks we didn't order when we asked about it he took the bill came back with the same bill with still the drinks on it. I truly had one of the best Father's Day lunch today at Saltgrass in McAllen, Texas. Our server, Kevin, made the entire experience more pleasant and comfortable, that's for sure. Not only Kevin provided the best service and hospitality during our celebration, but he also kept us entertained with his personal and genuine conversation. The kitchen staff did an amazing job cooking my ribeye steak to perfection. We were so delighted to share our sincere compliment about Kevin by speaking to the manager, Daniel. This manager took his time to give us plenty of information about this awesome establishment and club information. In addition to convincing us to join the Landry's Select Club, we also left the restaurant feeling great celebrating this special occasion. I was a little apprehensive about going since it only got 3.5 stars, but I tried it anyways, The restaurant is clean, the servers are very polite and attentive. I went 3 days while I was in the area for the butterfly festival, so that tells you a lot right there. I had the ribeye, double boned pork chop, and the ribs. I would have to say that the ribeye and pork chop were my favorite. The ribs were extremely tender, I just did not feel there was much flavor to them. We came for my husbands birthday and are a part of the Landry's club select members. The overall experience and food I can't complain about. The waitress was very attentive. I do wish they would of made an acknowledgment somehow to it being my husbands birthday. We had our presents and cake on the table so it was in fact his birthday but didn't bring ice cream or anything though our bill was over $100. I'm not sure if that's what has happened with restaurants as I'm sure birthdays happen often, but we have been Landry's club members and purchased quite a bit of food during dinner. I took my wife here for our 6 yr anniversary and what a definite disappointment. We had wanted to try this place out for such a long time ...we should've waited longer. If you ask me to name one good thing about our experience...I'd be hard pressed. The beer was cold? We ordered Ranger Rattlers....jumbo jalapeños stuffed with shrimp, cheese, and cilantro. First warning sign is how quickly they came out...too quick. Are they kept frozen back there? We've ordered similar food at other places and they come out piping hot but tastes fresh. The shrimp didn't taste so fresh and the jalapeños tastes pickled...like from a can. Bad start... We both had tortilla soups for a side...and we received a watery type of soup that had tortilla strips already inside. Seriously lacking in flavor... barely any chicken...no cheese. The veggies in the soup were these diced up tiny bits of food... didn't feel freshly made. Another star lost... Now our meals...my wife had the sirloin w/ a baked sweet potato and I had a ribeye w/ sweet potato fries. Her plate looked ridiculous...a gigantic baked sweet potato next to the steak...the presentation is awful. The steak looks tiny next to the sweet potato... switch up the plate so it doesn't look so empty. Her steak was nothing to rave about... basically checked off the "X"s. My plate was a huge disappointment for the price. First it wasn't hot...the steak felt lukewarm along with the fries. My gut says they waited for my wife's baked sweet potato to come out so my food started getting cold. On top of that...I ordered my steam medium and to me it didn't feel like a medium steak, it was closer to medium-well/well-done. The steak had nice taste to it but for it's price...? Service was also lacking...the server would come and go. He was very curt...felt like he wanted to leave already. And to top it off...when he brought my wife's plate, he grabs my beer and tells me he needed to grab something cold because the plate was extremely hot and his hand felt burned. So you decide to grab my beer mug? In the end I asked for my check. He came and dropped it off...I was literally about to hand him my card to pay and he just turned around not even paying attention. I then saw you can pay using a code attached to the receipt...which is how I paid. But seriously...maybe you should inform the customer "you can pay this way if you like" before just turning your back on them. 1) Killed a spider on our table- server refused to take the napkin with the dead spider off the table because she "has arachnophobia." 2) Flies swarming our food in the dining room (who knows what the kitchen is like!) 3) Filet mignon seriously overcooked 4) "Smoked" Mac n cheese is dry, NOT smoked, barely cheesy 5) Server KYLA really had the audacity to ask me if I wanted more tea when it was completely empty and I hadn't even received the entree. When she asked, I replied, "is that really a question?" At which point she rolled her eyes and walked away 6) I requested the manager come by as I got up repeatedly to swat flies away from us- that request was not granted until I finally told her to take my seriously overcooked steak and bland Mac n cheese away. 7) Upon walking in, we were greeted with an INTENSE pungent sewer stench; when the manager finally came by the table, I asked if this was a known issue. He replied with "once before," which I'm SURE is a load of garbage. 8) His response to this experience was "can I offer you a cheesecake or a carrot cake for your inconvenience?" WOW. Instead of taking my meal off, they kept it on and "comped" it so I would still be required to keep the automatic gratuity on the bill. Incredibly poor service, poor management, poor facilities, and a disgrace to any steakhouse. I traveled from 15 hours away and this was a destination spot as my farewell dinner. I will be calling to speak with the general manager since the shift manager on duty was obviously disgruntled and not understanding of any of the real issues. They didn't take any accountability. 1/10 because the loaded potato soup was good but I'm not convinced it wasn't swarmed with flies in the kitchen. read more

The food, service and ambience are EXCELLENT at the Saltgrass Steak House in McAllen, TX!!! The decor is fitting for the location and is fun/pleasant to look at. The entire staff are great from the time you walk through the door until the time you walk out. I began dining at this restaurant on May 7, 2024 and have dined there at least once a week since. My first server was Inocente and he was so OUTSTANDING that I have asked for him every time I go there. Inocente is very friendly, helpful and professional. He is a consistently OUTSTANDING server!!! I have enjoyed all of the food that I have eaten at this restaurant but my top 3 favorites are the Wagyu Steak, Filet Mignon Trio and BBQ Ribs. YUMMY!!! read more

Filet was over seasoned. VERY salty. The seasoning (salt) overwhelmed the flavor of the beef. I paid almost $50 for a dinner that was very disappointing.
