The quote was very fair, but the fact that he was competent and had the skills to do job was a relief compared some other contractors that quoted this job. This is my first review ever. I'm very thankful to have found Koland Construction on Yelp so easily. Don was quick to respond and was able to come the next day! I was able to text Don pictures of the project I needed done in one of our Portola Coffee stores. Don was able to quote the job via text within minutes. The quote he gave me was much less than others so it was easy to make the decision to go with him. Don and his son Kolby showed up early and ready to work. Very much a bait and switch company. I hired Don to do work last July2019 and he seemed to do a good job so I hired him back this last spring 2020. We discussed in detail that our home has insulation in the ceilings where we needed fixing from a flood. He sent me a bid and should have included ceilings. But when we got into the work he said "oh. I I will have to charge you $600 more for insulation in ceilings in garage and kitchen nook area. So I paid him for that even though it should have been in the original estimate. We could not be in town when the work was being done for it is a rental, so I did not see when He was putting in the insulation. Weeks later after I had paid him we realized there were extra noises in the house and I text him to confirm he put insulation in the ceilings. His response was " hell I-cant remember what I had for breakfast let alone what we did on your job". So my husband cut into the ceilings and sure enough he did not insulate the nook kitchen area or half the garage. Even after he charged me extra. We called him and gave him ample time to respond and make a business decision wether he would correct the problem, and he ignored us and will not take our calls. So as far as I am concerned he is a cheat and lier. Unfortunately he does good work if he does what he says, but to cheat me like that, he will pay a great cost with the complaint to the contractors board and building dept. also taking him to small claims court because to get the job done is another $2,000. I paid him nearly$7,000 in full !! He also tried to cheat me on the Master bathroom that was also affected by the flood, he charged me twice to dry wall it, it was in his original bid then he charged me another $400 saying he didn't have the back wall in the bid. Be careful this man does not take notes when he walks your job and his big excuse is "I can't remember" leaving him wiggle room to add and nickel and dime you. Buyer be ware.. Update ... well Don, now I can sue you for slander because you know the floods were not intentional, how do I break a pipe under my slab? And how do I cause a leak in a 30 year old copper pipe over my bathroom WHEN I AM NOT EVEN IN TOWN?... the building department and I are fine ask Guss.? And my insurance never contacted you .. And my rental is not illegal it is up as a 30 day rental.. so what's your next excuse ?. I am going to make sure the State Contractors board looks back into all your past jobs because most likely you cheated them also.. Contract is clear you wrote ceilings and walls and YOU did not perform! Lier... cheater.. worse part you tried to blame this on your son when talking to my husband.. what a jerk! This was not a false review. The work started on 1/31/18 and was completed on 2/1/18. I paid you $1600 by check that you cashed on 2/2/18. Your brothers hung the drywall and you did the finish work. The cuts around pipes was not clean in my opinion. I'm entitled to my opinion. Reviews are a customer's opinion. The flange that goes around the tankless water heater was put behind the drywall. Should be on the outside. The corners near the ground had yellow mesh material showing that wasn't covered. read more

I highly recommend Koland Construction for any and all of your drywall needs! Its family operated by Don and his son Kolby. I've been using Koland for over 25 years at 3 different homes that I've owned. Their licensed, skilled, and honest. It's hard to find good craftsmen that can-do quality work for a fair price. They're always on time and respectful of your home. The area around the work site is carefully draped to avoid un-necessary messes, the repairs have always perfect, and they clean everything upon completion of the job. I've used them 3 times within the past 2 months on a residence that I've recently purchased for both ceiling leaks and having to fix prior construction issues where the work had been done improperly. They're accessible via text message or cell and always respond in a very short period of time. I've given under 5 reviews in my life as I don't usually leave them. I was not 100 percent satisfied with the drywall repair work that was done by Don Koland I had to call him back twice to fix drywall that he forgot to repair and for cracks in drywall that he did repair in my garage. He seemed to complain about this drywall repair work after my plumber did a repipe job and he said the plumber was not his friend as well as a problem of not having his son as a helper on the job I discovered later that he did not texture a drywall area above some cabinets in the kitchen when I turned on the lights above the cabinets plus there was a lot of debris on top of the cabinet and it seemed that he forgot to do the texture there. In the bedrooms upstairs where he did drywall repair there are areas where you can see the patch and it is not smooth with the rest of the wall, Don did do a good job on patching the kitchen ceiling and some other areas like the dining room, but I did not see consistency in this job unfortunately so I would not recommend him or hire him again read more

We had Don do some patch work for us awhile ago. We had a leak in one of our bedrooms, and the bottom half of the drywall had been removed due to the water damage. I contacted Don and he was able to provide a quick quote, come out and do the work quickly and professionally. I felt the price provided was very reasonable for the amount of work and was happy with the quality of work as well. I would definitely utilize Don for future projects, in fact, I did contact him for a job at our new property, but Don we needed the work done within a week and Don was fully committed through that time. Came out for a quote after a quick phone call, was available, showed up on time, talked through what I wanted and gave me a fair quote. Called him back later that day to schedule the drywall demo and install the following week. I wanted to book him while he had availability. Called and texted me a couple days before to remind me about the dumpster rental. Showed up on time again, actually a little early which was great. After checking out the various contractors for dry wall repairs, I picked Koland because of Rocky N's 5-star review (amongst all the others), and also because Koland has a contractor's license. I NEVER hire anyone to do any work for me unless they have a contractor's license. It's the same reason I would never hire an unlicensed lawyer, financial advisor, dentist, or even a gardener and handyman. Or pick up a day laborer at Home Depot. Suppose I hired an unlicensed drywall repairman...he will do it for cheap. And I'm always interested in saving money just like you. If the repair is sloppy, I have no recourse because he is unlicensed. Who are you going to complain to??? To the state contractor's license board???!!! That contractor's license means he is bonded and insured for YOUR PROTECTION. And that is why unlicensed contractors are illegal. An unlicensed contractor has no liability insurance. If he gets injured on the job, YOU are the legal employer of record. That means, YOU must pay for his injury. Did you read your homeowner's policy carefully? Of course you didn't. They do not insure you if you hire an unlicensed contractor. And if you still don't believe me, call your insurance agent. Suppose your unlicensed contractor sends his employee or family member down to Home Depot for supplies on the job for your house...and he gets into an auto accident. YOU get sued because you are the employer of record and he/she was injured (or caused injuries) while employed by you. And since your insurance company will not defend you, you get to pay $$$$ to an attorney you will have to hire. Then there is the danger of hiring a scam artist who feigns injury to sue you. And all because you were ignorant of hiring an unlicensed contractor. You'll be lucky to keep your house. And if the unlicensed tree trimmer falls out of the tree and is crippled for life, he is entitled to $$$Millions from YOU. So by hiring Koland, you avoid the nightmare. And by the way, Don Koland came out and did the repairs in no time, and at a very reasonable rate! Very friendly and neat. Please remember: If a contractor is legit, he will show his contractor's license. Your job is to VERIFY that number with the state contractor's license board online. Sometimes, unlicensed contractors will work with an expired license or use someone else's. Don't hire them! read more

Then we started remodeling the kitchen & 2 bathrooms. Between the demo, modifications,, plumbing & electrical repairs, the house had more holes than Swiss cheese! So again, I called Don & he quoted a great price for the numerous patches. Don also was willing to obtain the necessary city permits for my job which was extremely challenging with Huntington Beach offices closed due to covid. Don was very flexible in fitting my job into his schedule. He works with his son Kolby & they are an amazing team. Showed up on time everyday with an incredible work ethic. Don and his son do excellent work. I completely gutted my kitchen for a remodel and when the time came for new drywall I searched Yelp and came across Koland Construction. I read the reviews and checked out all the pictures. I reached out to Don and he responded right away. Rather than waiting another day to get him out for a bid, I sent him pictures and measurements and he replied with a quote within minutes. He told me how long it would take and when he could start. He was there when he said he would be. The first day he immediately pointed out some things the contractor failed to do that needed to be done before putting up drywall....he could have just installed the drywall and not say anything but instead he pointed them out and helped me fix the problems. They had all the drywall up in the kitchen the first day. The only thing that slowed them down was waiting for the city inspection...their work passed the inspection no problem. I added some work and Don was very reasonable about the added expense. They cleaned up each day and took the trash with them. Besides the new drywall, I had him fix my family room ceiling, about 300 sq ft. which had a terrible heavy and uneven texture on it. His son spent two days coating and floating (I think that's the right terminology) the ceiling to a smooth finish....what an incredible job. I originally asked him to put an orange peal texture on it but once it was smooth, his work was so good I decided not to ruin it with texture.
