Absolutely stay away from this business. Their customer service is horrible. It's a real long story but essentially we are 2.5 hours from home in a 40th anniversary 4Runner and the blower for the heat quit. It's a few minutes to diagnose and approx 20 minutes to replace it. They will not figure out a way to get us in. I'm 65 years old and have never dealt with a business that is run this badly. The service manager just told me that he has to take care of vehicles that have been sitting there a month to be repaired before he can look at ours. You've got to be kidding me!! Unfortunately this is not a good review. My family and I will NEVER go back to Kolar Toyota in Duluth, MN. I purchased my vehicle from them a few years ago and always had such a great experience so when my mother started having problems with her car I recommend her to take it to them. What a mistake that was! Let me tell you why. The check engine light was on, it was showing EVAP codes, it was very hard to pump gas into causing the gas pump to click off, when you opened the gas cap you could hear gurgling, and a while driving you could hear a whistling noise. We brought it to Kolar Toyota and they stated code for evap purge valve/evap leak were popping up and that they found damaged lines located between the charcoal cannister and gas tank. Their words straight from the paperwork "Will need lines, suspect possible fuel tank issue, possible future canister failure from debris intrusion will need to fix lines lines/tank and reevaluate". The service advisor we were working with told us that the lines needed to be replaced but that they had to drop the gas tank in order to access the lines and that unless we wanted to risk paying another couple hundred dollars in labor on top of paying for the price of a new gas tank, that we should replace the gas tank now while they had it disconnected. With this information and under the assumption that we would be saving money in the long run, we decided to have it replaced. Over $2,000 later, we go to pick my moms car up and NONE of their repairs or replacements fixed a single problem. We brought her car back to Kolar for the second time and they discover the problem was actually the fuel tank filler neck. When we asked for a refund for the gas tank they replaced for no reason, they refused. We did not ask for a refund for the labor. We just wanted a refund the for gas tank itself. That alone was $874.09! that may not be alot of money for a dealership but it is to my mom! I spoke to the service manager and his reasoning for denying us a refund for the tank was basically that sometimes diagnosis of a vehicle can be a guessing game, that the mechanic has never seen a fuel tank filler neck fail and didn't think to check it and that we okayed the replacement of the tank. YES! WE DID! BECAUSE HAD BEEN CONVINCED THAT THIS WAS PART OF THE ISSUE AND IT NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. What would have happened if replacing the fuel tank filler neck had not fixed the problems either?! Would they have kept charging us for unnecessary parts until they found the issue?! If you look it up, the signs of failed fuel tank filler neck include: Check engine light (EVAP codes), difficulty refueling, and hissing sounds. I could have done a better job at diagnosing and fixing my mothers car with Google and a YouTube video! Take your vehicles elsewhere and save yourself time and money! After purchase and two attempts to repair my truck I just bought paid cash the brakes still do not work. one year later and no return contact from the owner as I was in direct contact with him. to dangerous to drive in the winter slide through intersections unless i put it in neutral as only the front brakes are work even after $1800.00 they did. why they sold the truck that way is beyond me. So after contacting the owner several times with no response I will have to take it to another dealer. Sad. I was going to buy an SUV also I had picked out but can not trust them anymore. With photos as the dealer I went to said they it looked as if they did not replace the timing blet , water pump kit that I paid $1200.00 for I hope they did and they did nothing to inspect rear brakes. I usually do not have my Toyota serviced at Kolar because I don't live in Duluth. However, on my way to a meeting in Duluth my windshield wiper flew off my car. I called Kolar, and they said to just come on in, they would take care of me. They had the part in stock. I was in and out in ten minutes. Even though this is a large dealership, they were friendly and helpful. I wasn't a stranger in a strange land. I highly recommend Kolar Toyota. When I am ready to trade in my current vehicle, this business will be my first stop. read more

My son was transferred to the area with military orders. He's very young and had never purchased a car before. I hoped that they would treat him fair and take care of him but they did not. The used vehicle they sold him, they promised was a reliable, great car -that had passed all their vigorous inspections and cleared by the service department-is now broke down just a few months later and needing a new engine and along with numerous other pre existing issues. The check engine light came on as soon as he drove off the lot and they lied to him saying it was just a computer glitch that they would fix. The staff was friendly enough, but in general totally got ripped off. Saw a used vehicle on line. Inquired, great communication, but then add the conversation moved towards going to see it the dealer started making documentation demands way ahead of need and then told me that they told me the price was non-negotiable on an overpriced car before I could even look at, when they certainly did not. According to the Carfax the car they had priced at 9999 was valued at about 8300. Upon looking at it and had a few questions mechanical parts and two obviously bad axles. Even in light of obvious minimum of $500 worth of work, they were less than pleasant at negotiating down 499. They knew I drove a long way (18 hrs) to look at it and took advantage. If you're looking to go see anything in their stock from a distance, DO NOT tell them where you're coming from. They will screw you. read more

I noticed that my credit card bill didn't match my receipt. I called and was told they now charge a 3% FEE for paying by credit card! This was not explained to me at the time but they claim there are signs "all over the place." I didn't see any. Bank fees are a cost of doing business and should not be passed along to the customer. read more

Bought a 2017 truck, along with the best warranty offered, in Sept 2022. We like the truck and have had no issues except for....all lights on the roof started going out one by one and license plate lights stopped working. We thought they were just fuses and we would deal with them at some point. Then, in Nov/Dec 2023 the headlight went out. Went to replace it and realized all the lights are aftermarket. This was never disclosed to us or we may not have bought it because it's been a nightmare trying to get everything in working order. After reaching out a few times (no response), spending hundreds on parts trying to get it all to work, we finally stopped in to Kolar. They "didn't know" about the aftermarket wiring/lights and wanted us to take it somewhere for an estimate. They will only pay for half of the $3000 it will cost to restore everything back to factory. One of their reasons is that we bought it 1.5 years ago. Yep, it's been 18 months and the lighting issue has been going on for SIX of those months. Husband has left messages twice asking for a return call re: their offer (even stopping in once) and no response. Now we have a truck with only half of the lights working. I am now in the market for a new vehicle but won't even consider Kolar. My coworker warned me about them but I decided to give them a chance. This dealership is great all the way up to the point of purchase. After the purchase, not so much, my family had a vacation to go on to attend our Niece's graduation, but we couldn't go because the vehicle we purchased wasn't registered in our name until weeks after the purchase was made. They failed to do their part, and we missed the graduation, and they don't care. They even took their time getting the plates to us knowing we were a week behind because of their inept ability to file the paperwork. When I spoke to the manager, he spent 25 minutes explaining that there might be a leans against the vehicle and they need to make sure those are satisfied before we can get the plates. Yet they still sold the vehicle to us. Stay away from this dealership, there are plenty of other places to purchase a car without the issues the management at Kolar Toyota causes their customers without even the slightest care. read more

My boyfriend purchased a vehicle from Kolar Toyota a couple of years ago. Recently, he purchased a new truck from a different dealer and was looking to trade in his car from Kolar Toyota. The dealer ran a Carfax on his car and found that the car he got from Kolar has been in two severe accidents and has severe structural damage. He was NEVER disclosed this when purchasing the vehicle from Kolar. He paid way more than the car was worth & got a severely damaged car in return. He tried to contact the GM of Kolar for weeks now and they never returned any of his phone calls. He stopped in there, left paperwork and explained the situation to the sales manager who said someone would get back to him, and no one did. After weeks of calling Damien (the GM), he finally answered his phone. He claimed that they never knew of the damage (despite a "thorough" inspection). Please don't trust Kolar with your vehicle purchase. Either they have no knowledge of the history of the vehicles they are selling, or they go out of their way to hide the history from us. They have made it virtually worthless when it comes to any resell or trade in value and also let us drive off the lot in a vehicle deemed potentially unsafe solely to make a profit. There are so many better dealers out there. Don't go to Kolar Toyota. read more

I wish I could give this place a 0. They sold me a car with 69,xxx miles on it and at 70,xxx miles it was found to need a new engine. When I called warranty, they said it was pre-existing. When I told Kolar, they refused to call me back for a while and then told me it was impossible to deem it as pre-existing. Terrible sales associate! My husband and I are buying a 2022 Tacoma. The female sales person (I am a woman and know what we go through! I also am a GM of a body shop) could not tell my husband the dealership options added to a new truck... she could not answer ANY of his questions so I got on the line. I asked and she was RUDE and to be frank she did not know what she was talking about...embarassing! The staff needs knowledge and training... how am I/we expected to invest over $48,000 with a person we cannot trust? I needed a new headlight for my Prius, and since I was heading up to Duluth -- I called them for a quote. They were over $100 LESS than a Toyota dealership in the Cities -- so yeah, I made an appt. During the appt they found the one serpentine belt to be extremely cracked - - so they recommend to replace. (They showed me the belt, and it's amazing that it's held up for 144k miles.) BUT....what impressed me was: a) I was able to get a morning appt no problem b) they only took 45min to replace the drivers headlight and belt c) they STILL were less expensive than what the dealership in the Cities was going to charge Friendly service, fair prices for authentic Toyota parts. I can't guarantee, but I also think they have some type of complimentary shuttle service - - cause I heard several other customers state that they needed a ride. Oh, and if you check in on your smartphone on yelp - - you get a $5 discount on an oil change. read more

Called and asked and was told they had mislaid the paperwork because someone was supposed to put the trade in value on the papers, never did it and the paperwork sat on someone's desk for two months. Bought a used vehicle a little while back. the vehicle ran fine during the test drive and we liked it, so we decided to buy it. As we were going inside to do the paperwork they said they were going to wash the vehicle for us. After doing all the paperwork we were told to wait because they were still cleaning it, which I thought was odd. About a half hour later the car was pulled around front and we were given the keys. As soon as we started the car the check engine light came on and the car ran extremely ruff. The dealership offered to fix the problem as long as WE paid for the repair. After taking the car someplace else for the repair at half the cost Kolar quoted me it has been fine. I have my suspicion that some underhanded stuff went on while they were "washing" the car. It doesn't take more then 30 Min's to wash a car! Watch out! read more
