    Svickova and Pilsner Urquell
    Tung D.

I got here for lunch, and was told I could sit anywhere since the restaurant wasn't crowded, so I picked the table near the window. The grumpy waiter told me that the table was for 4 people so I had to switch to a smaller one. I wouldn't mind if there wasn't another person who came a couple minutes later and sat at the same table by himself, and this time the waiter didn't complain. Quite a discrimination. Anyways, onto the foods, I ordered a half litter of Czechia beer Pilsner Urquell and Svickova. This was my first time trying these 2 things, so it was a fun new experience to me. The beer was super light, and I wasn't buzzed at all. The Svickova was interesting. The sauce was on the sweet, creamy side, while the meat was kinda skimpy and tasted like it was preserved and marinated a long time. The dumpling bread pieces were glutinous and interesting. The whipped cream and jelly made the dish even sweeter, which was a strange combination of savoriness and sweetness. Anyway, an interesting lunch.

    Pilsner Urquell. 1/2 liter.

Oh my. This is my kind of place, one with the feel of an old beer hall. In search of some beers and a light bite, we stumbled upon here and ended up sharing a full meal. Had we known there were 8 other Kolkovna locations, we might not have gone at all, but don't let the Czech chain-equivalent scare you off. You'd be a fool not to go here. Started with the cabbage soup (with smoked meat and cream in a crispy hollow loaf of bread). Super delicious and hearty, and I loved the presentation in the bread bowl. And for 65 Kč (about $3 USD)?! Are you kidding me? This could easily sell for $8-$10 in major US cities. Next we shared the old Czech Kolkovna platter (a total of 900 grams including the following: 1/4 roast duck, Moravian Sparrows (pieces of roast pork), smoked meat, smoked beer sausage, white and red cabbage, three kinds of dumplings (bread, fat and potato). This was incredibly filling, even for two people to share, and was hands down one of the best dishes I have ever eaten. Ever. And all for the low price of 329 Kč (about $15 USD). I estimate this could go for $50 or more in Manhattan. The service was also on point. They clearly get how to cater to American tourists. I can't recall a time when my glass was empty. The smoke is annoying, but that's in all restaurants in Prague so get used to it.

Came here as a recommendation for authentic Czech food from our hotel. Usually I'm weary of tourist style recommendations but this did not disappoint!! All food was fresh, flavorful, and unique. The mixed meat plate was amazing my favorite being the wings of the ribs. Meat was very tender and seasoned perfectly. The mashed potatoes were sooo delicious. And of course the beer went perfectly with it all!

    Goulash!

Had a great experience here with the goulash so I came back and tried the deer steak. Both were excellent and really set the bar high for other restaurants serving Czech food. Watch out for the peppers on he goulash; they can be spicy!

Terrible Service. Decent Food. Good pricing. They have a huge, expansive menu (see my pictures) that changes very regularly, which is an excellent thing. The menu includes quite a few touristy food options too. The food and beer is very well priced. Service was AWFUL. Our server Thomas was totally ignoring our table since it was just 2 people and a toddler, and the check wasn't going to be huge (about 900 CZK). He focused all his energy on bigger tables with larger billing. Took forever to take our order, and after we finished our unnecessarily long meal, we tried to flag him down for 20 minutes by flailing our arms at him, which we ignored. Finally another server - Lukas (thank you, you saved the day because we were ready to scream) - saw us in distress, left his section to come over and help us. Needless to say we won't ever visit the restaurant again because of the service. The food was quite good, but they do tend to overlook the meats. The pork ribs were well smoked but not very moist. The pork neck was very well seasoned but a little dry. We also ordered some sides (green beans with bacon, rice, etc) and drinks which were fine. The restaurant was quite busy at dinner time on a Tue night (8PM) and it's only because we made reservations through our hotel concierge that we were seated upon arrival. I'm sure they have an understanding with prominent hotels in the city and ensure a quid pro quo relationship is built and honored - you refer us and we will prioritize your hotel guests... The restaurant is in a very nice location of the city, and had 4-5 outdoor tables. The inside of the restaurant is big but super warm - I mean 80 degrees and sweating warm... Does not lend itself to ordering and eating large quantities. More for drinking cold beer I suppose...

    Grilled meat platter

For food, yes it was good but for service? Terrible and one star! So this review will be two parts! For food, ordered the grill meat platter for 269 kr a little under 11 dollars for all sorts of grilled and well seasoned meat although, skewing towards the saltier side. The meat consisted of an entire sausage, two pork ribs, one slab of pork, and 4 chili chicken wings and a small corn on the cob with two sauces -- one that tasted like cheesy dressing and the other a sweet tomato based sauce. The meat, although fatty were delicious and my favorite were the chicken wings which was so juicy and the slab of pork where the lean meats tasted like thick Canadian bacon. For the grilled vegetables it was just simply DRENCHED in oil. Tasteless. Get it if you want to drink oil. For service, the waitress was rude. The restaurant doesn't offer tap water, only bottled and when a friend took a sip of his own water, he was scolded. Another friend ordered a beer that had a bug in it and when she ordered a new one, was charged twice for the beers. Also asked for two to go boxes and got charged 50 crowns without any warning. Whatever that's 2 bucks ish but annoying for all the stupid hidden fees. We left and the waitress looked at us without saying bye. Okay cool. Bye but not coming back.

Variety of food choices... Recommended by locals. Authentic Czech cuisine at very reasonable prices. Typical European service... meaning no rush or urgency to get the food out or rushing you out the door once you've finished. The restaurant was packed when we arrived; definitively make a reservation. Thankfully they were able to seat my brother and I. Definitely try the mixed meat selections, but be warned... Arrive HUNGRY as the portions are plentiful. Absolutely worth checking out.

Terrible staff... ready for tourists. Only. Poor service. Poor organization. Just sit and wait. No smile no emotions. We r working. Sad

Duck Salad and Salmon Salad, both delicious

What a nice spot to hang after a long walk. We came upon this cute restaurant after crossing over the bridge. There are three Kolkovna restaurants within walking distance of Old town. The beer is excellent, and their menu is great. I had the duck salad with a salted pear dressing, amazingly delicious. My husband had the smoked salmon salad, wow! His salmon was like sushi, perfect for a salad. His had thinly sliced toasted bread on top. Great place. Will return.

    Pilsner and goulash!

Quick service, cheap prices, and really good goulash. Very close to Old Town, and filled with locals and tourists. This is a huge spot so you didn't have to wait for a seat! The menu was huge, and they had plenty of veggie options, alongside the hearty meat options!

Pickled sausage and beer - Yeeeeeeaaaahhh.

Many lovely pickled, smoked, boiled, and fried sausages at this classic Czech brewery. (And great non-sausage food too. My wife loved the roast goose.)

Fun, authentic Czech beer joint. Pilsner Urquell is their brand. Bartenders were fun and attentive. Plenty of futbol on TV.

It is indeed in a touristy area, but after having walked a few dozen miles in Prague already, on the last night, close proximity and convenience trumps everything else. We made a reservation online and when we arrived we were promptly led to a table in white tablecloth right next to the window in the dining room. For appetizer, we shared a dozen SNAILS - yes, in Prague, even in a French restaurant, they call them snails, not escargots. In fact, Central Europeans had a long tradition of eating snails even before the French made this delicacy famous. The escargots, ok..., snails, were cooked in rich garlic butter mixed with parsley (that's what the green stuff is just in case you are wondering.) They were delicious, and almost as good as those from the streets of Paris. The CHATEAUBRIAND was brought to us on a carving board together with bone marrow, side dishes of vegetables and mashed potatoes, and a sauce boat full of yummy peppery gravy. Our server carved the beef nicely and plated the dishes meticulously at our table side. The beef was melt-in-your-mouth tender and very flavorful. We could easily tell this was top quality filet mignon and nothing less than the best cut. For the side dishes, I particularly liked the mashed potatoes which tasted like they were made with fresh and naturally creamy potatoes. The peppercorn sauce was rich but not overwhelming, subtly complementing the natural flavor of the steak. Service was 5-star throughout our meal. It began with a complimentary "water melon with bacon" palate cleanser, and ended with complimentary house-made chocolate at the conclusion of our meal. Service was attentive, friendly, prompt but not rushed, and literally white-glove throughout the night. You want me to give you a reason for visiting Brasserie La Gare, or Prague in general? This meal, including two large beers and two glasses of reasonably good wine, cost less than CZK 2,000 which is about US$90. Wanna go?

At first we were thrilled with our server's recommendations and excellent attention, as well as with the cocktails, food, and gorgeous ambiance. The problem occurred toward the end of the evening. Our server cleared our dishes and asked if we were interested in dessert. We said we would be happy to consider the choices. He left us and got busy with another party, which we understood, so waited for about 20 minutes. One of his colleagues passed by and we mentioned that we were waiting. We saw her tell our server, who still did not make time to check in with us. After waiting even longer, one member of our party--originally from England, which becomes important later--got up, found the server, and asked if we could get the dessert menu. Finally he came to our table. He did not apologize for the wait (all he needed to say was that he had gotten swamped, and we would have been fine with that small explanation). Instead, he said, "The hardest part is waiting," mentioned there is no actual dessert menu, then left and came back with a board showing us some of the desserts, explaining what they were. He was obviously irritated with us and so we opted to end the evening and asked for the check. He brought it quickly and pointedly explained that we could tip him. We were uninterested in rewarding his rudeness and did not tip him. Then he insultingly said to our English friend, who was paying: "I didn't think you had an American accent." This was so unprofessional. We go out of our way to be gracious when we travel, not wanting to be seen as "ugly Americans." We tip almost everyone and generously. Your server's increasing rudeness and growing irritation with us was completely uncalled for, and we are so disappointed to have this memory of an otherwise wonderful few days in your beautiful city.
