Mid-Project Review - AGA Construction…read more We're officially about halfway through our kitchen and dining room renovation with AGA Construction, and we've been extremely happy with the experience and progress so far! This was a pretty extensive renovation that required taking the kitchen and dining area down to the bones. From the start, the AGA Construction team handled the demolition quickly and efficiently, and once everything was opened up, they immediately got to work on the important things you don't necessarily see in the finished product. In just about two weeks, they've tackled the major electrical and plumbing work, brought necessary items up to code, installed new recessed lighting, completed drywall, and have already started/completed the new flooring. It's pretty incredible looking back at the photos of the original kitchen, then seeing the walls and ceiling completely opened up, and now seeing an entirely new space beginning to take shape. A huge part of making the process go so smoothly has been our project manager, Micky. He has been great about guiding us through everything step by step, explaining what the team is working on, answering our questions, keeping us informed about what comes next, and helping us navigate all of the decisions that come with a renovation of this size. Having that communication has made a potentially stressful process feel much more manageable. We're only midway through the project, but it already feels like we've gotten through the hardest and least glamorous part--the demolition and all of the electrical, plumbing, code, drywall and infrastructure work behind the walls. Now we're getting to the exciting part where we can actually watch our new kitchen and dining room come together! So far, we've been very impressed with AGA Construction, Micky, and the entire crew for how quickly and efficiently they've kept everything moving while still keeping us informed throughout the process. There have been minor hiccups as construction jobs usually have but there has been constant updates, communication, and assurances along the way. Everything is still going according to plan! Later, "Jacob" called me back later and expressed condescending concern that I had ONLY a $150K budget. I told him that's where the budget starts, not ends and asked him what the true cost was. He responded back that it's between $300 and $450 a square foot. So I told him, "Okay, if my calculations are correct, if I go with $350 a square foot so I'm not at the rock bottom, and I multiply that by 600 sq ft for a small ADU, that is roughly $210K for a price starting point with your company?" "Well no it's not exactly... "Then what did I miss?" "Well there's all sorts of other things blah blah blah..." Overall the tone was condescending and he made it clear that I didn't know what I was talking about, when in fact I have 15 years experience as a home designer that designs and budgets facelifts on houses that are about to go up for sale. I have dealt with contractors for many, many years. Eventually I got fed up with his tone and told him to cancel the appointment. As my grandma always said, you'll catch more flies with honey than hot sauce!

Their staff will attempt to upsale you until they get every dime. The actual contractor is not involved in the business he receives a kick back from the corporate CEO whom has similar arrangements with other contractors some of whom are no longer in business for poor business practices like the ones referenced above along with other infractions. The workers are professional and do good work. The sales practices are deceptive. I had four separate people come to my home in an attempt to upsale me. They didn't back down until I threatened to go to arbitration and file complaints with the BBB and Contractor's License Board. The two stars are for the constitution workers whom are actually sub contractors as they were not hired by the named contractor as he is not actively involved in what happens under his license. Lastly they will make up a reason work needs to start immediately like to take advantage of a nonexistent program. Thar is to lock you into a contract you only have 3 days to cancel. None of the programs referenced were ever identified nor was paperwork on these programs when I requested information. I definitely feel taken advantage of as they were not up front or transparent however they were very friendly as they committed their shady business. Be careful.
