Hazel is quite cute. I haven't been here before, although I'm pretty positive the store has been here since before I moved into the neighborhood. They have a couple of storefronts; one is focused solely on clothes and accessories, whilst the other has a variety of goods: some apparel (scarves, gloves, that sort of thing), jewelry, children's goodies, cards, and so on. This is a great place to stop in to find a gift for someone you adore--and they have things at a lower price point as well, if you need to find something for someone you don't. The staff is really friendly, very helpful, and not overbearing. Great combination! Parking is street only along Montrose, and it's metered. Perhaps more convenient, the Montrose stop on the Brown Line is half a block east so pop on over. read more

Just like I had to resurrect my Yelp from the dead to give honey butter fried chicken a 5 star review for the outstanding customer service, I'm now using my second back from the dead review to do just the opposite for Hazel. I stopped in last week after getting a shake with my daughter at Culver's next door. Upon entrance we walk in and I greet the man and 2 older ladies at the counter with a friendly " hello" they all turn to look at me, dead silence. Ok, whatever. Let's take a look around. Cute shop. Was surprised that the prices weren't outrageous as most stores like this are. As we walk around I hear the gentlemen helping other customers in the store and the ladies giving a nice warm greeting to everyone entering and a friendly " thank you, goodbye" leaving the store. Every white person that is. Perhaps they thought a Latina in workout clothes, messy hair and a daughter was most likely a single mom on welfare who can't afford a $6 monstera trinket tray or a Dolly Parton mug? I let my daughter look around and she asked if I could buy her something from the children's section. At that point I had heard way too many greetings and no one had even bothered to acknowledge us despite having spent 10 minutes in this store and being within a Birds Eye view of 3 employees. I explained to my 8 year old daughter that the customer service in this place was horrible and that I would buy her something from a different shop because they had left such a nasty taste in my mouth. The icing on the cake was testing them as we walked out. I purposely waited for the last white people to leave to hear them thank them and say bye and I let new people walk in and listen to that greeting. As we walked out I waited for my " thank you, goodbye " and nothing. I had to look back at the ladies at the register with a look like " WTF " is wrong with you" i could tell one was ignoring me through her peripheral vision and the other turned to look at me and still didn't acknowledge me. Yikes. I actually came to Yelp while I was still in the store because I just knew they had to have had this problem before and I was right. I love supporting small businesses but not ones like this with non existent and "picking and choosing " customer service. As someone who worked in retail for several years these employees are exactly who I trained my employees not to be. Stay away. read more

Hazel is a worthwhile stop on your Lincoln Square/Ravenswood/Andersonville gift-shopping outings. It overlaps a lot with several nearby shops such as, say, Enjoy and Foursided, falling somewhat on the kitschy and whimsical side than the crafty and classic. But they also have jewelry, accessories, and housewares (sections in which I am typically uninterested) which balance out the aesthetic, so it is not an entirely frivolous establishment. It's a good option when you're shopping for multiple people and/or are not quite sure what you are looking for. Boutiques like this better serve the type of shopping when you are seeking inspiration rather than hunting for a specific item. It's a little cramped with more than a few other customers in the store, which is always the case on the weekends when I visit. read more

My head almost exploded upon walking in! So many cute and sparkly things caught my attention right away. It's like Anthropologie and a local boutique had a baby, minus the clothing part. No, not a naked baby, I mean they don't sell clothes! Hazel has two storefronts: a gift shop, and a clothing store. I have used the giftshop several times as my go-to place for beautiful, unique gifts. In particular, I typically have a hard time gift shopping for men -- but I always find something just right at Hazel. I recently went to the clothing store to find a special dress for a wedding. I went in on a whim, figuring they probably wouldn't have anything my size since I typically have to go with large or extra large options. I ended up finding several options, and had 2 store attendants giving me their full attention. After an hour of trying on about a dozen options, I chose a beautiful dress that will easily work for many occassions and travel. Dresses range from around $40 - $250, and mine was in the $150 price range. I appreciated the attention the staff gave me, as I was wanting to make an investment in my wardrobe. As a result, Hazel is now my number one stop for purchasing attractive and artful clothing. read more

I can't get enough of this creative little shop: They are a tremendous asset to me, my family, my dog and yes, even the community! Did you forget a birthday? Mother's Day? Anniversary? New Baby? Last-minute invite? This store has you covered! Gorgeous, truly unique cards, jewelry, handbags, flowers and hostess gifts for every conceivable occasion at reasonable prices... the brilliant staff will tell you stories about product and the artists. If you find it pricey, please consider that these are hand-made by individuals, not some sweatshop in Sri Lanka! What you find at this store isn't usually available anywhere else which is why I (and the lucky recipients) adore it so much! Although I left wishing for a better selection of accessories, Hazel is a cute & tiny shop that deserves some attention. I quickly plucked three blouses from the rack, although I was doubtful they would fit. The girl working here offered to get me "more sizes" if I needed them. I love when they do that, because I've already got the biggest size in my hand. It's sweet and unassuming of them. If two of the shirts had fit better, I would have bought them: an ivory, lace peplum top; and a satiny sleeveless top with a tiny pattern of navy and pink stars with gold edging and a bow adorning the back. *SIGH* Prices are average to high, most pieces I touched were $40-70. I stopped in to Hazel after brunching at Glenn's next door. I'd never noticed the store before, but after seeing all the adorable little trinkets in the window, I was drawn inside. I was immediately impressed by the beautiful fresh flowers for sale throughout, alongside unique cards, cute baby gifts, funky jewelry, and trendy housewares. It was such a fun store to browse! It's the kind of place where you want one of everything. I only walked out with a gift for my newborn second cousin and a card - the gift was an adorable onesie with a baseball on it. They gift-wrapped it BEAUTIFULLY and free of charge, which was fantastic. The only thing is that many products, I feel, are a bit too expensive. Some bits are priced very fairly (great-smelling soaps for 5.75, for example) but then I would see a $40 candle, or a $25 mixing bowl, and it was just a bit much. Hazel is what I would consider a boutique type of store, with a great assortment of cards, paper products, hats, jewelry, toys and other specialty home items that are perfect for gifts and other special occasions. They even sell fresh cut flowers as well! What is more impressive is the service. Every time I walk into Hazel, the staff is extremely friendly and helpful...which makes me want to come back more often. One time, I bought a nifty card holder, which I thought would be great to put all my store and travel cards in. Unfortunately, the one I got was broken. When I took it back the same day, the same guy that rang me out the first time was happy to assist me in doing an exchange since I opted to buy something else instead. A disproportionate percentage of my disposable income has gone to this store, a testament both to the quality of goods and dynamite location. I just got a terrific a pop-up book for a toddler of Pop Art, which the toddler ('s mom) loved. They occasionally have great sale stuff- I got a sweet set of stationary (sparkly pink with a graphic of a sign that reads "The Steak Pit," perfect for every occasion) and several big stencils of ladies faces, cars and cassette tapes for $1 each. And why on earth would you gift wrap anything yourself? They do it there, cordially and beautifully, for free. read more

While I understand the need for small businesses to have stringent return policies, I do not understand why that need cannot be expressed when an individual is making a large purchase. I spent over $100 at Hazel on a gift which my mother hated. Upon attempting to return it, I was told there's a no cash return policy, only store credit. My mother lives nowhere near this store. I was never told that during the transaction, and the card over the register explaining that was partially covered. Also, nobody checks receipts in this day in age. Basic communication was lacking here, and my experience was beyond disappointment. Asking management to make an exception, I just got a generic sorry and a rude explanation (which is frankly, not good enough), that small businesses cannot refund purchases. That is actually untrue, as I run a small business quite successfully. What keeps a small business running is making your regular customers happy. The shopkeepers were quite rude, and I do not plan on returning ever again. read more
