I have eaten at enough sushi restaurants to know the formula. Step 1: Install bamboo. Step 2: Add a dragon. Step 3: Play mysterious flute music. Step 4: Name every roll after either a volcano, a ninja, or an apocalypse. Komodo Loco apparently looked at that formula and said, "Nah." This place has actual character. The restaurant is dark and cool without feeling like you're being interrogated. There are cozy little nooks everywhere, and somehow it manages to feel both laid-back and upscale. Like if a speakeasy and a sushi restaurant had a child who grew up with excellent taste. Then the food arrived. Look, I've had plenty of sushi. I've had good sushi. I've had "my friend won't stop talking about this sushi" sushi. Komodo Loco belongs in the last category. The fish was incredibly fresh, but what really stood out was that the rolls didn't all taste like slight variations of spicy mayo negotiating with cream cheese. The flavors were genuinely original. We ordered the Crispy Rice Bites, the T-Dub Roll, and the Horacio Roll based on our server's recommendations. The Crispy Rice Bites were so good I briefly considered ordering a second round before I had finished the first. The T-Dub Roll disappeared from the plate so quickly that I suspect it may have violated several laws of physics. The Horacio Roll was one of those dishes that makes you stop talking mid-sentence and stare into the middle distance while reconsidering every life choice that led you to not order two of them. Which brings me to our server: Breann. Or Breanna. I apologize for not knowing which one. In my defense, I was busy entering a committed relationship with sushi. My daughter is moving to Denton, and since we don't live here, we asked what we should order. Breann/Breanna immediately became the Gandalf of menu navigation. There was no hesitation. No "everything is good." No vague server diplomacy. Just confident recommendations that absolutely delivered. She was kind, funny, helpful, attentive, and genuinely welcoming. More importantly, she made my daughter feel at home in a city she's about to call home. As a dad, that meant a lot. I also loved how Komodo Loco celebrated Pride Month. Not because restaurants have to weigh in on everything, but because the atmosphere simply communicated: "Hey, you're welcome here." And honestly, that's one of the best things a restaurant can do. Good food fills your stomach. A welcoming place fills the room. Komodo Loco managed to do both. So yes, I'll be back every time I'm in Denton. My daughter thinks she's moving here for school. Food was great, but the service was slower than expected. My husband and I came with two friends--we were seated right away and ordered drinks quickly. It wasn't very busy at the time, but our drinks still took about ten minutes to arrive. We started with potstickers, which were delicious, and our little one's avocado came out quickly, which we appreciated. However, after placing our order, we noticed several tables seated after us receiving their food before we did. At one point, we were concerned our order may have been overlooked. Anyways, if you come here, they are nice servers and a nice manager. The pork bao was so good it's not even funny. The noodles and rice were mid. The vibe is cool modern cyberpunkish, New York brick style feel. If they did away with the bright ceiling lights and installed colorful LEDs or cool warm or blue neon street sign style lights instead would be better, and add table lights to be able to see your food would 10x the vibe. A Friday night, place is extremely busy! Just moved to the area and looking for good spicy tuna. Ordered the tuna and crab cones and loco dragon roll. The dragon roll came with a strawberry sauce which I was skeptical of, I got it on the side! The wait was a little long but get it, it was really busy! The wait to dine in, way over an hour! Good food and great happy hour. My wife and I stopped by during a visit to Denton's Halloween which is super cool, but I digress. The place is real homey and very approachable. We stopped in around 5pm and found they have happy hour which was a nice surprise. We ordered a few items off that menu, but also wanted to try some regular items as well. The tuna and krab cones were really nice and light. Perfect to share over drinks. We always get an order of escolar when we find it. It was nicely cut and scored which made for an excellent chew. The last item to arrive was salmon dish called the cure. It had nice, thick slices of salmon with torched skin over a bed of soba noodles. It was okay and kind of strange. The torch really did a number on the skin. I would have preferred and hot skillet sear since the torch left it bitter and dusty from the ash. We are glad we tried it but wouldn't get it again. With ironic signage and literal green tubes instead of bamboo decor, I was surprised to discover this wasn't a random, pop-up tea shop, but a legitimate restaurant. Whose idea was strawberry sauce on sushi? And why is everything so expensive?? That means the food must be good, right? At the start of the evening, everyone at my table with a soda said it was horribly flat. Another not-great sign. On with the appetizers: the karaage had a mid sauce and was missing the crispy-crunchy exterior I was hoping for. The fried chicken skin had an OBSCENE amount of salt. Obscene. Disgusting. I sent it back to the kitchen without replacement. The pork belly bao was cooked dry and the coleslaw in it was not great. The duck legs were good, if a slight bit overcooked. The wasabi sauce under it was tasty. For sushi, the 'Takes 2 to Mango' was bad. 'Mean Green' was a contrary flavor that I thought was okay (but my friends did not agree.) The smoky ramen didn't taste smoky. The chicken flavor wasn't anything to write about. The noodles were too soft. Dessert: the flan was *gritty* and had the texture of tofu. The cereal milk macaron was rubbery. The service was fine. I will not be returning to this place. I strongly recommend avoiding this place. I've never been to a worse place since moving to Texas. I had leftovers and the thought of taking it home was appalling (I did not.) Immediately after leaving, I ordered food from a different place that cost half as much and was actually palatable. In fact, it was so good I came here two nights in a row. The location is great with plenty of public parking down the street. The vibe is pretty hip and fits the food quite well. I felt compelled to leave a review after reading a rather ridiculous one. My boyfriend and I are a bit of foodies and love trying new restaurants, rarely coming back to the same restaurant twice. However, Komodo has become one of our regular spots because YALL ITS THAT GOOD! The food is phenomenal, the staff is knowledgeable and friendly, the vibes are great, and it's clean. Reviews should be based on the quality of food and service, not minuscule details that had no impact on your dining experience. Before publishing something online, we should all think to ourselves, "is this helpful? Is this kind?", if the answer isn't yes to both, then don't post it. The restaurant industry is challenging enough and patrons shouldn't be picking apart irrelevant details and then leaving bad reviews because of it. This is someone's livelihood and that shouldn't be taken lightly. The world would be a lot better of a place if we were all more thoughtful with the words we speak and post. Great little place just off the main roads. It looks a little divey from that outside, but is clean and comfortable on the inside. Our service was excellent and everyone was incredibly friendly. We had the roasted brussels sprouts as well as the roasted peppers for appetizers and both were delicious. I had the southern smoked Ramen with extra spice added. She was so knowledgeable, double checked items, and helped me coordinate my dairy issues as well. It had been a minute since we'd ventured here and I am so glad we did! My hubby and I were on the hunt for a quick but good meal before catching some sports event. We got in early, around 5pm, and were seated immediately. The place has had some nice renovations lately and it is quite charming inside. You're greeted cheerfully at the door and view to the nice bar area and main dining. The place is small so definitely come early if you can and take advantage of their HH specials! We started with the KFD (fried duck wings) which are always a must. Four crispy duck wings in a delicious sweet and spicy sauce. They're messy but worth it - and if you don't want to get your fingers sticky, use the fork and get a knife. Very tasty! For entrees, my hubby got the pork belly bowl with a fried egg and I got the Cowabunga roll and an avocado maki roll. Everything arrived quickly. My hubby's pork belly were perfectly seared on both sides, crispy on the outside and soft on the inside over a bed of yakisoba noodles with lots of veggies and that fried egg with a creamy center. The Cowbunga specialty roll was beautifully excecuted. Stuffed with tempura shrimp, topped with seared filet mignon and artfully covered with a chimichurri and some other delicious sauce. I LOVED it -and normally do not care for cream cheese in my rolls. The avocado maki roll was simple and yummy, avocado wrapped in rice and the external seaweed wrap. We will be adding this into the rotation for sure! I can't wait to explore more items on their fusion menu. It just works so try it! Go there. Get some. Life is too short for boring food! read more
