This is an amazing company I had them ship my household goods from Irvine Ca to Waikoloa . They were the best I was heated inform during the whole process. I packed & label 17 boxes, a 9 piece dinette set. The movers showed up at the appointed time. Loaded my boxes form my 3 fl apt& built a shipping container that was truly stout for my belongings. Everrfging including my vehicle was shipped to Honolulu . It arrived in 7 days and then since it was the 4th of July holiday I had to wait for everything to be shipped to the Big island. That was expected because of the 3 day weekend. When they were delivered to my house everything was in perfect condition, not a scratch , sent or anything. My car was delivered and other than it being dusty which was expected nothing was was wrong. No salt water damage, no dents, scratches no nothing. I shipped 2 vehicles from NYC to Hilo, HI door to door. They were by far the most responsive company while we were shopping for rates, and had the experience to talk through every hypothetical we could imagine. At only 10% higher rates, we were getting about 10x better service before even becoming customers! When it came time to working with the sub-contractors to get our cars picked up in NY, they were the perfect middle man taking every step of the hassle out of our hands. The moment the car left our driveway they were in touch about port departures, inspections, shipping schedules, port arrivals, airport drop-off, registration, and more! No automated messages here - we knew the names of every member of their staff and got personal texts / e-mails / phone calls for all our needs. The team is also experts at making changes on the fly - we ended up adding a car, having one of the two cars meet us in Hilo, the other at the Kona airport, and inspections/registrations added for both. Change orders were crystal clear, including all the fees and rates we locked in early on. Having them handle registration for us was also a breeze. We were responsible for getting the cars weighed (a 2 minute process in town), and getting our paperwork in order. After that, they had our plates and inspection ready for us within a week of arrival! For any Hilo folks - keep in mind that they operate out of Kona, so be prepared for the drive to go get your plates when they're ready :). They met the schedule they quoted for ALL services on this massive journey almost to the day! (Keep in mind, that's 5000 miles and red tape with NO surprises!) Although this company has great reviews, be sure you read the fine print before booking. First off, they require you to pay the total amount up front, plus a 3% credit card fee if you want to earn points by using your credit card. Problem is, if you cancel for any reason, they will keep 15% of your upfront fees, although they say you can use this credit IF you ship with them again. But if you cannot ship with them again, they will keep your 15% (forever?). Oh, and the 3% they charge you for using a credit card will never be refunded. So, if you book with them using a credit card, but must cancel for any reason and cannot ship with them again, you will lose 18% of YOUR MONEY. Not my style of doing business, for sure. When I complained, a woman named "Laura" told me to take a hike. Gosh, even more customer-centric business practices. All I can say is, there are plenty of reputable shippers out there who do NOT charge credit card fees or withhold your upfront fees if you must cancel. Book with them instead. read more

Not recommended. My customer service experience with whoever I was talking to on phone was worse than a retail store. I initially called to ask them questions and get a quote, but was greeted by a man name James (I think). After asking him few questions regarding a few boxes to ship from Nevada to Hilo, he accused me of being some company that was spying for company rates. He wanted to find out where I live and name and even when I told him that, he remained skeptical. He became more skeptical after he knew that I was taking notes for myself, and if my call was being recorded. Of course I will take notes. As a customer who will shell out a hefty sum of money to transport my things, and give my personal belongings to someone I can entrust to is something I look for. This company definitely does NOT fit or even is worth writing in my book. I haven't even got a follow up call or a email quote. Only 2 call backs to me to confirm my address. I am in to support local companies in Hilo but this experience was just disgusting. I hope the person who I was speaking to was not the owner, since that kind of behavior represents exactly the kind of people who I do not want to do business with. read more

She gave packing recommendations so that we could try to cut down on costs where possible and helped us estimate how many pallets we needed to ship prior to packing everything in boxes. Jim, Laurel, Joel and Mica (sp?) were terrific, as well as the teams of movers they had. Starting with internet searches for movers, packers, shippers, etc., one of my internet searches showed Jim, the Kona Car guy. I liked his webpage but "assumed" that the car would go through Matson, as all shippers do, (just as the Kona Car Guy), and moved onto movers. Our time was getting within 5 weeks of our flight, and we started get serious about booking a container and a car mover. I knew that we needed a moving company (get boxes into the container, and then into your new place) No movers were responding to emails, so I started calling the Kona Containter guy, and Lauren answered the phone. During the call, found the best schedule to ensure that our would get there before us, provided a cost, and gave us a couple of days to think about it. I researched more, and found the Jim is also the Kona Container Guy. Our call back to confirm with them, They were to: 1) Ship our car with them - to Kona (extra, as it's arrives in Hilo); - They, for an additional charge, place the car in the parking lot at the Airport, for you arrival-Done! 2) Their movers would take our stuff from San Jose house, into the 20ft container- short haul;; - Joel, and team, were done in about 2 1/2 hours, although Joel did arrive an hour and half early (to assess my packing); 3) Their movers would take our stuff out of the container, and move it upstairs to our condo - with 2 floors! - Long haul: Mica and team hauled our heavy stuff to the loft, with a smile, also finishing in less than 3 hours. Car was at the airport. Nothing was broken. If you had a question, any question during any phase of the process, they were always available and picked up your calls. If you want a one stop shop that simplified the logistics of moving to Hawaii, I would highly recommend the Kona Car/Container Guys: Jim, Laurel, Joel and Mica! read more

I packed my own container, moving from near Chicago to Honolulu. Lauren was very helpful with communication during the entire process, from before the container arrived at my house on the mainland, to helping me find a location in Honolulu to place the container so I could unpack my car and belongings out of the container. I also did not yet have an apartment when the container left Chicago. Lauren was able to assist with all the details once I provided the address of my place in Honolulu. I packed the container with my belongings myself, and strapped the car in after it was loaded by a flatbed...Other than some very minor scuffs, which is to be expected, everything is great. I would recommend going with them for your move to or from Hawaii. read more

When we moved in April from Kona, Hawaii to a city north of Los Angeles, we hired Kona Container and Car Guy to pack our belongings, load them into a ship container in Kona, and unload them into a storage unit. When we moved into our new home, we found many of our personal belongings broken and damaged. We had a glass art piece, made by a dear friend back in the 1980s, and part of a pair of pieces, poorly packed and broken. That piece is irreplaceable. We found a tall standing wooden statue with its head snapped off. We found the glass shade to a standing lamp shattered. We found our four-foot by six-foot hanging wall mirror broken. We found our white sofa with a large black smudge mark on it. These pieces were poorly packed and loaded into the container in Kona and poorly handled and unloaded into the storage unit at our destination. When we moved from California to Hawaii ten years ago, my wife personally packed a ship container herself (with several of these same items) and not one item arrived in Kona broken or damaged. I would advise finding a different moving company other than Kona Container and Car Guy to handle your move from Kona, Hawaii. I know there are risks involved in such a move, but our stuff was poorly wrapped and handled in the loading and unloading by Kona Container and Car Guy staff. That part of the process Is controllable and should be risk-free. Poor wrapping and handling led to our personal things being broken and damaged. When we first contacted the owner of Kona Container and Car Guy about two broken and damaged items that we found, he offered to let us use some of his moving blankets for compensation. We don't need moving blankets and fail to see how that compensates us for our loss. Then, later, he said that we need to furnish receipts for our broken and damaged items, with the date and amount paid. How many people keep receipts for everything they buy or receive as gifts over the years? He said that "heirloom or antique items that don't have prior provenance have a maximum claim value of .40 cents per pound." ??? He said, "the limit of liability for shippers and specifically liability for used household goods are clear." What IS clear is that Kona Container and Car Guy poorly wrapped and handled our belongings which led to many of our prized and irreplaceable possessions being broken and damaged. I had 2 vehicles transported from Pennsylvania to Long Beach California port to the final destination of the Big Island of Hawaii. The First trucking company that The Kona Container guy hired, never showed up. The second trucking company that they hired was a complete failure! One of the vehicles (2002 Silverado 2500) left Pennsylvania in near mint condition with 2 barely visible nicks on it. It arrived in California using a VERY low class trucking company, now with a major scuff from the hood to the back of the roof along with many scratches on both sides. The trucking company (Turan Express) that The Kona Container Guy hired denied all responsibility and got away with paying nothing toward the damages that they clearly caused! I had to contact my own insurance company and file a claim and pay my deductible in order to get this vehicle repaired. Yes, The Kona Container Guy does return your calls, but they failed terribly when it came to their advertised statement saying that they only hire reputable transport car carrier trucking companies. Yes, it is true when you contract with them you pretty much sign off stating that they are not responsible for pretty much nothing that may go wrong. However, I honestly believe they should have taken some of the responsibility. The only thing that they did do for me was provide a rental car for a few days because the vehicle had arrived late. That is the only positive note I can make; everything else, not so much. read more

We hired Kona Car Guy in Hawaii, when we moved to the Mainland. His car transfer guy was totally worthless and our truck did not arrived in time. I was standing at the airport with 3 tired and stressed pets and no truck. He promised that the truck will be there. I had to rent a Van, so our 3 pets with kennels could fits there comfortably. It did cost me $399 plus gasoline and did not even got a penny or a 'sorry' back from this lousy "business-man" I would NEVER recommend Kona Car Guy to anyone. He is a greedy man. read more

They were unbelievable in that they were on top of the entire process and coordinated with the mainland dealer to insure no "glitches". Jim and staff at Kona Container Guy facilitated our move from Kauai to California. A great crew of 3 came and loaded my household into a 20ft container. I paid a little extra to have them wrap and protect some furnishings which I wouldn't recommend. That is not their forte. But figuring out the puzzle of fitting everything in to the container... YES! They did a great job. I elected to drop my car at the port myself. Jim provided me with all the information necessary to do so. I didn't have an address where I was moving to and they worked with this and kept in contact with me while I was house hunting. My car arrived within the quoted time and in perfect condition. My only issues occurred with the delivery and unloading of the container. I would say these issues were the fault of the shipping, trucking and unloading companies, not necessarily Kona Container Guy. There were a few instances of miscommunication between myself and KCG but it's difficult when they are in Hawaii and keeping different business hours and I am not. Whatever the case, KCG and Jim rectified any issues I had and made sure I was happy. I would wholeheartedly recommend them for your shipping needs. read more

This man arranged for our car to be shipped from Kona to California. When we received the car in California it was damaged. He will not take responsibility for my car, despite the fact that it was under his care while it was damaged. We've shipped multiple cars with Matson containers before and never had one damaged. It wasn't until a car was under his care that one was damaged. read more
